Looking good

"Summer season is important for us," expanded the TomTom man, who said he couldn't put and exact date on the launch.

Hey, it's middle of june and that's summer. Which sort of summer do they mean?

lets wait and see
What tomtom said and what they do? its a million far ? We just wait and see. Might be an April fool during summer.

I thought TomTom had pulled out of the PDA market and were only doing TomTom hardware based products?

I quite like the google nav to be honest , wonder what tomtom will bring to the table to make it unique, and worth paying for

With free google nav already on android device. I don't know how tomtom will make money of their app. Not to say now apple has their own map solution launching in Ios 6.

The only thing I miss on Google Nav is a Speedo reading!!!!!!!!
Other than that its no bad.

I used to have it for my iPhone, and the only thing I liked over google nav was the fact that when music was playing, you had a skip track button at the top

Well at least here in Finland, Google Maps Navigation isn't supported. We'll have to use 3rd party navigation around here.

Turns out the apple solution uses tom tom. Cant post a link but im sure you read this as it was announced WWDC today.
Wonder what this means for android version of tom tom.

I use copilot live EU and it's perfect. I've driven through Europe with it. Google nab is OK but you don't want to be using data abroad.

In all the GPS tests using phone based software Tom Tom navigation always comes out far better than others .Routes are better road works and other delays are better .
Purchase would really depend upon the user and how often and where its going to be used .
The probability with this money behind it Tom Tom will improve further .
No reason for Tom Tom not to sell across all platforms .
Tom Tom + Apple the future could be a greater developed Siri incorporated within the navigation .

Slightly Annoyed

I've been trying to find a way to install individual maps for my Artemis but it seems I am stuck with TomToms BS way of dealing with them.
Ok, so I start Tom Tom home and look for CH... I only see DE, AT & CH. +all major EU roads... and I think to myself, "heh, no, I'll stick to CH only thanks". WRONG. Tomtom will not let me.
I don't want to install Austria and Germany if I want my CH map... Why on earth do I have to do that?? I only want the CH map, plain and simple, that's it, I'll install AT and DE when I want/need!!... It takes up 300 MB off my SD card on stuff I will not use anyway
Then I try to calm down and think "hmm maybe CH is too small for it to be worth the bother thus they decided to fuse it to the others"... THEN I SEE CANARY ISLAND worth just over 3MB...arrrrrghhhhh!!! why why why
Anyway, sorry for the rant but I needed to let the steam off. Now, does anyone of you know of a way on installing CH (or any fused map for that matter) individually?
Help would be much appreciated.
Cheers
You might be frustrated mister, but still your language is offending, even with the ***'s.
Here we 'act' like gentlemen (and women)
as you mentioned the map you have includes all the coutries (Ger, Aut, Ch + major EU roads).
So you cant extract or what ever only one coutry.
Go to the tomtom page and see if you can buy a map only for your loved CH or live with the FREE Ger and Aut maps
Cheers a german guy...
astrodemoniac - what version of TomTom Navigator version are you using? (I will assume that you upgraded to the 6.03 on the HTC site).
What version of TTN Maps are you using?

*TomTom NAVIGATOR 6 - Software & regional maps on memory card

Ok, the fact the software comes bundled with the device doesn't mean it's FREE as you want to point out. I paid for the device and believe you me that they do charge you for it
Oh and it's not about my "loved" CH and hated evil "DE,AT" it's about choice. What I need and what I don't. In my case, I don't need the other countries, why should I have to waste over 200MB of my card's space on it. Sorry if I am not a conformist.

Of corse your are right, you have/had to pay for it, but there is no CH only map available für TomTom as you can see on www.tomtom.com . And as i mentioned there is no way (i think) of extracting the CH part of the DACH package.
And its a pitty i can't "delete" or what ever the A/CH part of my DACH map, so i could save space too.

if your using 3G you could also use Googlemaps for the phone.
for more information: http://www.google.com/mobile/gmm/index.html
point your phones browser to http://www.google.com/gmm
any freebies?
The only free one I know of is Googlemaps that I already spoke about. tTough you pay for the data downloaded via your ISP using 3G/Wifi.
tbh who would make a GPS Navigation application and ask nothing for it?
How about smart2go, you can download the maps for free of Europe and do navigation (on screen) all for free. The only bit you pay for is the voice prompts.
I use tomtom, but I've given it a go and it works pretty well. I'm planning on using it in greece later in the year as there's better coverage than the version of tomtom I have.
It's a little fiddly to get the map loader program to install the maps, but if you try and have a problem let me know and I'll try and find out what I did to get it working.

Nobody can give you a link to Pirated software on this forum, sorry. Search Google for that.
Another FREE alternative is Microsoft Live Search. It's actually a pretty good GPS program if you look around in it. Also, it uses speech recognition to input what you are looking for. Give it a try.

I have the Navigon 2100max PNA and prefer Navigon to TomTom and IGo etc. Very pleased with it so the PDA version should be just as good.
Here are the xml modifications to support HD res. Have not tried it yet as I don't have the phone yet.
Im hoping this works, 'cause navigator 6 hangs on my HD as well as on my girlfriends Omnia. Haven't found the reason yet, but I think it's a resolution thing...

Their website doesn't show the Touch HD as a compatible device:

Never used navigon, but I like what I see!
Yes but it supports other windows mobile devices and you know what, they are nearly all the same at the end of the day. As I said, I have the Navigon 2100max. Bought it half price for £99 from Halfords. It uses MN7 software which is fast. Love it.
Here is a trailer for Mobile Navigator 7 for those who have never used it to see what its like. Its very popular in Europe but less so in UK as TomTom seem to be the leaders.

It has literally just been released. Launch date is tomorrow - 17th November.

Looks very interesting. It has speed warning? Is that by comparing your actual speed against the legal limit of that particular stretch of road or merely against a preset speed?

Hi,
how does TMC reception exactly work - will it use the implemented radio module? I mean, if I buy MN7 and install it on my HD, will I automatically be able to use TMC (with headset antenna plugged in, I mean)? Or do I need additional hardware? Mobile navigation does not make sense to me without TMC (in Germany ...), and I wonder if I really can throw away my PNA and use the Touch HD instead.
Eriol
A few answers to above questions.
I am happy with the UK Text to speech. Announces roads very well.
Not sure about if TMC uses radio built into phone as I dont have HD yet but I presume it does. I also presume you would need to plug in a usb lead or headphones to act as the antenna just like in the PNA version.
According to Navigon, TMC reception is available at no charge in the following countries: A, B, CH, CZ, D, DK, E, I, N, NL, S.
As for installing it, copy the folders in the download to the root of your SD card. Then go to folder 2577 and hit the install05 cab. Then copy the xml files in the 1st post and overwrite them with the relevant ones on the sd card.

Is the solution you present here using the full 800x480 pixel screen size or is it just stretching 640x480 to 800x480 (as proposed in some German navigation forums some weeks ago)?
I wonder why Navigon has not yet changed its MN7 to the realities and offers a true 800x480 product ...
As for the TMC: I read in different forums that TMC would not work, but none of the posters was able to test this. Another option would be to download traffic data via internet; TomTom is able to do this now with its latest PDA versions.

Actually I don't know how it works with MN7, however I changed just the "BinaryConfig.xml" into the MN 6.2.5 version... and I found the stretched result pretty ugly !!
So I came back with the "normal" resolution of 640x480... and it works well, even if a part of the screen isn't used... ;-)
Read post 11. He has tried it and says it is fullscreen. Maybe he can tell us if it looks good or not.

I did it in "fullscreen" with the version 6.2.5... and the result is awful !! Icons and menus are completely deformed...
That way, I don’t like it at all, however it’s just my point of view... ;-)
Yes but you have said you have used version 6.2.5. This thread is about version 7.0 so MN7 may be different on full screen and improved.

{help} gps for cycling software?

Sportypal pretty good!
sportypal
have sporty pal .. good but the maps and the gps is a bit iffy.. but it's very good for what it does.. and you can do walking etc. but i will try other apps listed here .
sporty pal is good. As long as u dont let ur phone lock or turnoff it work ok. Really good data presentation!
iv found memory map which uses ordnance survey maps to be excellent for this type of thing.
thanks guys i had tried and just come up with junk i think these will work, will have a play with a few and see what i perfer, thanks again SpZero
GPSVP ppc
by far the best of the lot IMHO... although not the prettiest, ad takes some playing with to get the best out of it but it's open source!
--
I've just used it to do a 372km/2 day ride to the HPV world champs in tilburg and back home again.. worked perfectly for me.
it'll read GPX files in (so plot them out in something like Bikely.com)
then use the pc version (or the PPC version) of gpsvp to download all the map tiles from google/live.com or openstreetmap..
It'll also handle Garmin compatible maps, so you can find openstreetmaps in that format as well..
when you've got all the raster maps you need (at all the zoom levels you need) transfer the folder to the ppc and setup the app..
Obviously if you've got data access while out you can download maps on the fly so to speak.. But I didn't while roaming.

I couldn't agree more. I use Memory-Map (http://www.memory-map.co.uk) for cycling and walking with my HD and it's just brilliant. Large maps with great detail on the big screen. You'd need to carry at least 1-2 spare batteries though to last you through a full day...
The software logs your track to upload to your computer and then convert for Google Earth to share with the rest of the world.
A great website for UK cycling routes ready to use is: http://www.gps-routes.co.uk
Have fun, Alex.
+1 for Memory-Map, have used it in the UK with 50k and 25k series maps on HD.
Dont forget the one and only "GPSCycleComputer". Very good program, and its free!

Now I'm using more applications, but Sportypal and RunGPS for me are the one's that you must try, although rungps is not free. There is a trial version that you can try, after that you must enter validation code. Sportypal is completely free, and I enjoy playing with it. For cycling is good and it's pretty accurate. Couple of days ago I installed the 1.0.5 version and the problem with locking or going into stand by mode is fixed. Here is my workout info so you can see what it has to offer.

just in the process of setting my Desire up.
Can any one advise how I configure it to allow me to use it as a Sat Nav with turn by turn directions etc..
Also how do I get UK & NZ Maps ?
how fast will it be finding satellites compared to a TomTom ?
My old Nokia N95 8GB took ages !!
Thanks
Hi Albert
If you want to use Google maps for navigation you'll need the brut modded maps for NZ, the normal maps will work in the UK though. I didn't find the google navigation particularly handy though so i got Navigon which is great. The maps are installed on the SD you you won't need a data connection all the time. There's a 30 trial and if you don't get the full license you'll still be able to use it in the country you first registered it.
Connecting is REALLY fast! I've even connected while i was inside away from the window (not all the time though)
btw...comparing it to TomTom, i noticed i love to be able to see nevigation in portrait mode where that isn't possible on TomTom ofcourse. Portrait mode will give you a much further view of the road compared to landscape view.
Thanks
Are there any other decent free sat nav options for the UK & NZ. ?
you don't happen to have a link for brut maps do you ?
Thanks again
Get Nav Launcher from the Market. It will install brut maps for you and everything else.
Thanks I'll try that..
Last quick question will I need to find the UK & NZ maps or does this do it all ??
Google Navigation uses online maps - you need to have an active data connection, though I believe it is supposed to cache maps when it calculates a route.
Unless you've got decent data plans in both the UK and NZ, it probably isn't much use to you.

Dave

Free options? No, not in my opinion. Google Maps Navigation is the closest free navigation app to the paid offerings, but I still believe it isn't as good overall as something like Copilot.

I believe there's Navigon, Copilot and Tom Tom is coming soon.
There's also AndNav for free from the market, Waze and I believe Wikitude now does Augmented Reality Directions.
I have no experience in any of these applications though.
There is also this:
http://www.mapdroyd.com/
But I'm not sure weather it does turn by turn or weather it's just offline maps.
thanks.
I'll look at all the apps suggested.
download copilot from android market and if you dont like it uninstall it within 24 hours and you wont be charged. I have tried them all and I find that copilot is about the best app out there for android, however their customer service is extremely slow, took about two weeks for them to answer a trouble ticket. however app is very well priced and it is an excellent bit of kit.
Thanks I will take a look
