htc one v (tips and tricks) - HTC One V

Avoid task killers
It is best to avoid task killers such as Advanced Task Killer. Android is designed to automatically pre-load certain applications, even if you don't load them yourself. If it starts to run low on memory, it will smartly unload the oldest running apps automatically.
Manually killing tasks will only mean they get loaded in memory again. Task killers can make the phone slow, laggy, or drain battery life more quickly.
Bookmark a contact on your homescreen
To bookmark a contact on your homescreen, long press on the home screen background and select Shortcuts. Then select Direct dial.
If you call someone regularly this can be useful as you will have a shortcut to them handily placed on your homescreen
Bookmark a web page on your homescreen
To bookmark a website on your homescreen, go into your browser and find the bookmark of the page you want to create a shortcut for.
Then long press on the bookmark and select Add Shortcut to Home.
If you regularly visit certain websites, this can be handy as you will have a shortcut to the site on your homescreen.
Create folders to tidy your Apps
If you find yourself with too many Apps on the homescreen, then you can create folders to organise them.
To start, simply press and hold on an App and drag it over the top of another App. The App should change colour/shape. Then release your finger and the two Apps will be combined into a folder.
You can then drag more Apps into this folder using the same process.
To give your folder a label, simply long press on the folder and you will be able to enter a name.
Double tap for a full stop (period)
While typing emails or notes, you can simply tap the space key twice and the phone will insert a full stop / period
Install new keyboard to improve accuracy
The standard Android keyboard is good, but not great. There are many third party keyboards available which will improve your typing speed and accuracy.
Go to the Android Market and search for 'Keyboard' to see some great alternatives, many of which are more accurate and make typing much easier.
A good one is GoKeyboard.
If you see a warning saying the keyboard will collect all information (including credit cards) just ignore this. This is just a security feature that Android shows for every third-party keyboard that you install.
Accents and special characters
If you want to type non-English letters (eg those with an accent), long-press on the relevant letter. A list of options will appear for you to select.
Access the scientific calculator
To access the scientific calculator, rotate the phone to landscape mode.
The calculator will change to a scientific one
Add email or phone number from text
To add an email or phone number to your contacts from a text message, you can long-press on the email / phone number. Then select Add to contacts
Add widget to the homescreen
To add a widget, go to the homescreen and press the Apps icon (the circle with 6 dots). Then you will see a list of your Apps with the word Apps and Widgets at the top. Press Widgets, then you will be presented with a list of available widgets.
To add a widget, press and hold on it and then position it where you want
Android Easter egg
There is an Easter egg hidden in the Android operating system. To see it, go to your Homescreen, then press Menu - Settings - About phone.
Then tap on the Android version option 5 times and you will get a surprise.
Sometimes it doesn't work, so try a couple of times. By the way don't expect to see an actual Easter Egg. That is just the name given to things hidden inside software or operating systems.
Auto focus the camera
When taking photos or videos, tap the screen where you want to focus on. The phone will automatically adjust the settings to improve the image or video
Bring up more predicted words
If you have word prediction enabled while you are typing, you can long press the middle word that is suggested. This will bring up a menu allowing you to select various other suggested words.
Browse websites in full-screen mode
If you want to browse in full screen mode, without the URL bar at the top of the browser, then you can enable this..
Open the standard browser and press Menu - Settings - Labs. Then put a check mark under Full Screen .
To get access to the browser options (that are now invisible), there is now a neat hidden menu. Slide your finger in from the left or right of the screen. A circular menu will appear with various options.
Capture a still shot while recording video
To capture a still shot while recording a video, simply tap the screen while you are recording.
This will save a still image.
Change keyboards
To change keyboards (if you have additional keyboards installed), you can switch between them by pressing the small keyboard symbol in the top left of your screen. You will need to be in keyboard input mode (i.e. typing something) for this to work.
Note: you need to have more than one keyboard installed for this to work
Change quick response texts
The phone has the ability to send quick response text messages if your phone is ringing but you can't answer it.
To change these, go to your Dialer App - Settings - Quick responses. You can only have 4 of them and you may need to edit existing ones.
Change the backlight screen timeout
To change the backlight screen timeout, go to Settings - Display - Screen. Then choose the screen time out duration.
You can also tell the phone screen to always stay lit when it is plugged in via USB. Go to Settings - Developer Options. Then check Stay Awake.
Change the screen brightness
To change the screen brightness, start from the Homescreen and press Menu - Settings - Display - Brightness.
Then choose the desired brightness setting. You can also select Automatic brightness to let the phone decide for you.
If you have auto-brightness enabled, you can also press, hold and slide the top notification bar left and right. The brightness will increase and decrease accordingly.
Check phone status and battery usage
To find out information about Signal Strength, Network Information, Remaining Battery Time and Battery Usage (by Application), go to your Homescreen - Menu - Settings - About Phone.
Check the firmware version
To check your firmware version, start from the Homescreen and press Menu - Settings - About Phone- software version
This should list your Android version, Build number and Model Number.
Copy files between your phone and PC using WiFi
To copy files between your phone and PC, go to the Android Play Market and download an app called AirDroid.
This is an extremely useful App that connects your phone to your PC wirelessly, allowing you to move files and many, many other things.
Copying iTunes songs to Android
If you have decided to ditch your iPhone in favour of Android, then there is a simple way to take your iTunes music, playlists and album art with you.
Simply go the Android Marketplace and download a Free App called Easy Phone Tunes. You will also need the computer version of the software, so go to http://easyphonetunes.com and download it from there.
Then, when that is done, turn your phone into a USB storage device (this will vary from device to device, but instructions are on the website).
Once your phone is connected to your computer, open the computer version of the software and select your device from the Easy Phone Tunes list. Then follow the instructions to Sync your media
Create folders in your Quick Launch bar
If you have used up all of your Quick Launch spaces, then there is a trick.
Once it is full, press and drag an App from the homescreen and move it over the top of an App in the Quick Launch area. Then release your finger. This will create a folder containing the original App plus the new one. This is a great way to have access to regularly used App
Create shortcut to websites on your home screen
To create a shortcut to a website on your homescreen, go to your browser bookmarks.
Then long press on a site and select Add shortcut to Home
Customise your favourites tray
At the bottom of each homescreen is your favourites tray, which consists of 5 icons. You can customise it by adding icons to the tray. If it's full however, you will first need to remove some.
To remove an icon, simply press and hold an icon. Then drag it to your desktop.
Then to add a new one, simply drag an icon from your homescreen to the favourites tray.
Enable / disable vibrate / haptic feedback when you type
To disable / enable vibrate (also called haptic feedback) when you type or press the screen, go to Settings - Language & input - Settings.
Then uncheck Vibrate on keypress.
Enable sideload of Apps
If you want to install Apps outside of the Android Market (called sideloading), then go to Settings - Security - Unknown sources.
Note: use at your own risk.
Help, I have forgotten my unlock pattern
If you have forgotten your custom unlock pattern, then don't panic.
After 5 unsuccessful tries a button should appear saying 'Forgot pattern'. Press this and you will be asked to enter your Gmail username/password.
The phone will then ask for a new unlock pattern. If you don't have a Gmail account, then you might have to either call your carrier or factory reset your phone.
Hide folders or files
If you want to hide folders or files from being index or displayed, simple put a . (full stop / period) before the file or folder name.
Make volume / music louder
WARNING: Making your volume or music louder can damage your hearing.
Most phones have their volumes limited by local laws to protect our hearing. There is a way to boost your volume however. Go to the Android Market and download an App called Volume+ (Sound Boost). There is also a free version called Volume+ Free.
You will need to root your phone for this App to work.
Make your phone run faster
Here are the top 5 tips to make your phone run faster:
1) Use only essential widgets on your homescreen - each widget consumes memory and processing power which can slow your down your phone.
2) Uninstall apps that you don't use - after awhile your phone can get cluttered as some Apps are designed to always run in the background. If you rarely use an App, then uninstall it to free up memory and CPU resource.
3) Install Apps to your phone memory - if you have an SDCard, always install Apps to the phone memory, which can be accessed faster. If you have Apps on the SDCard, then move them back to the phone memory with an App called Move2SD available from the Play Market.
4) Use Static rather than Live wallpapers - Live wallpapers consume processing power and memory. Unless you really must have them, uninstall them.
5) Kill tasks occasionally - Some Apps will run in the background indefinitely unless you kill them. Most of them won't cause a problem, but it pays to check your running tasks from time to time. Hold down your Home key and check the Task Manager.
One last thing: Don't use Task Killers. Android manages tasks very well and Task Killers just make your phone unstable and can slow it down further
note this guide is mainy to help the people who didnt recieved a manual instructions booklet along with their phone like my country(INDIA)

Thanks.

paarthdesai, you've listed good things but this thing slows down the phone (at least my One V). When I had put 4 contacts in a folder and kept it on the homescreen and when I tried to use speed dial, it was even slower. When I touched the bookmarked contact, the phone got stuck (not completely, I could always use the Home capitative touch button)(But yes, this happened everytime). And then, the 'Dialer' app never worked. After about 10-15 seconds, the conatact was automatically called. Now tell me this is Speed Dail or Slow Dial?
And Hey even I'm from India but I got the Manual

probably coz ua phone is overloaded
it won't make it slow
infact dey help to make it much smoother
aww tht good u gt the manual i think nly Mumbai users don't get it

The One V actually shipped with 4.0.3, and the easter egg has been present in stock ICS since the very beginning. It was never included on HTC ROMs though - your guide (which you copied and pasted off another website) was obviously written from the perspective of stock Android ICS.
RE options for live wallpapers, the menu list you've shown is only available on that custom ROM. Or rather, it is the modified stock launcher that provides that option. If you use something like Apex Launcher, you can pick a live wallpaper by hold pressing on an empty space. If you want to use the stock launcher though, there is a solution. A lot of live wallpapers will automatically bring you to the selection screen for them when you open their icon. One such wallpaper:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=fishnoodle.spacescapewallpaper_free
So you can definitely get live wallpapers on a stock ROM. It's just a limitation of the Sense launcher. They run pretty well too.

1st of all if u think it's copied provide a link to prove it
and pin point
and my base is 2.0.8
soo it is available in that base

(Happy) Easter Eggs in WM6

WM6 Easter Eggs - WM6 Features (search terms)
This is a list of new and little known features in WM6.
Please add any I miss to this thread and I will try to put them in this post (with credit of course)
1. Typing on the keyboard on the today screen will automatically bring up the phone with matching contacts. Certain phone skins do not support this and you will just get a text box with scroll bars covering half the screen but nothing in it. If this happens switch your phone app with the Tweak app (varies depending on who’s WM6 you are running)
2. From Messaging (Outlook, SMS, MMS, [POP/IMAP? not tested] ) if you start typing it will search through your messages for whatever you type. Hold “H” for a list of shortcuts. I think the shortcut keys mean hold that letter.
3. Under calendar; If you create a new appointment and decide you don’t want it, you can now pres menu and cancel (cancel was not in wm5)
4. When typing in WiFi keys (WPA, WEP, whatever) you can actually see what you are typing instead of just ******.
5. The new feature I found that I love is if you go into the options for the calendar you can now set it to start in Month view (or whatever view you prefer). I couldn't stand the fact that WM5 kept reverting back to agenda!
(Thanks chymmylt!)
6. The camera finally keeps adjustments like contrast and sharpness saved.
Previously if you soft reset or power off and on the phone, these settings would always revert back to the defaults.
(Thanks abubasim!)
7. In Contacts, when you edit a contact you now have 'File As' useful if you want Forename Surname instead of the default Surname, Forename
(Thanks nbedford! [I installed the "File As" plugin and never noticed that it the ability to change it was built in =)] )
8. In Outlook, if you [Reply All] by default it copies your own email address into the recipient list, so you receive your own mails, even if you auto-save them already in Sent Folder. I found that extremely annoying because with every [Reply All] I had to manually remove my email address before sending.
You can avoid this easily:
1. Programs -> ActiveSync
2. Menu -> Options
3. Select the E-mail information type and tap Settings
4. Tap Advanced
5. Enter the e-mail address you want to remove when replying to all senders in My e-mail addresses
(Thanks aublumberg, This applys to WM5 also but not to many people know this one.)
Let me know if this is a waste of space, and if not, lets keep this thread on topic and point out all the fun reasons to use WM6.
Later, Lew
thanks. couple those i didnt know about.
not quite "easter eggs" though are they
thanks for sharing this information
i found the firts two points very usefull, and (correct me if i'am wrong) due to the lack of a propper wm6 manual i think this thread comes quite handy

Bump for added Features.
Not new, but little known and well hidden:
- press and hold the action button
- tap and hold the clock in the title bar until the dots stop moving
- when you release both the stylus and the action button, you get a small menu with an "execute" (or "run") entry. Tap that to get sort of a command line prompt.
Cheers
Daniel

WIKI Pls
In the interest of WIKI and promoting the use of knowledge being written once and used many times, there is already a knowledgebase for this with lots of stuff, if you can add yours and close this, everybody will know where to go for their easter eggs...

Tap and hold the clock on the title bar lets you switch between digital and analog disply - no idea that happened until now!
I guess, you already know this...
Pressing the "power button" for 3 seconds turns off (not just standby) the device (with WM2003 it wasn't possible...)
This is probably an old one but I didn't know it myself until Googling for it:
In Solitaire, open the on-screen keyboard, tap Ctl and Shift and then Deal. It gives you the perfect hand.

[Ideas] Bada Modifications.

I would like to hear your ideas for Bada modifications, what things do you want to see done to Bada?
Everything and anything goes! (within reason)
My wishlist.
-
Delete some unneeded "Icons"... because I can remove Facebook, Twitter ...
But few JAVA Midlets are somewhere protected against remove.
I was able to delete jar, jad, Icon but Icon still there in menu
Where is the Database entry to clear?
Preinstalled Widget too...
-
120 Apps Limit...
Hmm, there are other ways to replace ... BUT why 120 Apps are Maximum?
-
Developer signed Apps are only 1 possible to activate...
bada SDK Samples for instance...
Via Broker.exe Install seems more then 1 work at the same time... Why?
And how to expand to install more then 1 App at same time.
-
Filemanager bada App with Access to internal Filesystem.
I'm sure that Samsung will not allow this on their Store... but is it possible.
Someone told their are no APIs to access internal folder...
maybe invetigation of apps_compressed.bin will help to find "Commands"...
-
Folder delete in internal FS
I can create folder with PSAS, but can't delete. They are writeprotected.
More ideas hopefully later...
Best Regards
well for instance i wanna change the keyboard to either htc or iphone.... this one is too crammy like congested.... wanna have a spacious potrait keyboard......... and with universal setting like if i wanna activate predective text it should apply everywhere... not just in messages........ and it should always stay on..........
secondly i wud like to see more UI modifications beyond just themes...... like changing the status bar or the way notifications occur and stuff........... custom roms maybe... variety is a good thing...
I'd like to see:
Ability to create widgets or widget like apps using system parameters..
For eg: GPRS data, browser bookmarks, setting wallpapers etc..
Customization of the top Notification Panel buttons.
Filemanager Drag and Drop to move files and folders
A memory cleanup application.
Big Aspect sized thumbnails for videos.. now we cannot distinguish videos in thumb view.
More Right click options in files/folders - i.e., Click and Hold to show Menu options to Move/Copy/Delete/Rename/Open with/etc..
I'd like to see shortcuts (with names) like on Android and continous autofocus in the video cam !
My ideas or things I want in Bada
Here are my ideas :
1. Ability to replace whole UI like Android.
2. Folders in Menu.
3. Text-reflow in Browser.
5. Unlimited Menu pages and Home screens.
6. Unlimited SMS storage (why you want to restrict us to 1300 on a SMARTPHONE )
7. Sending Group SMS to any number of people (can be very useful for certain type of
businesses. Did u think about it Sammy ?)
8. Auto-hide of Notification bar and Lower bar after certain amount of time or on Tap.
9. Different Wallpapers on every home screen.
10. Better animations.
11. Smaller icons. 4x5 grid with an option to change to suit consumers' taste.
12. Notification Drop down to have buttons for APN, Brightnesss.
13. In-built Backup-Restore app for all phone data. User should be able to select to what he
wants to backup or restore.
14. Highly efficient GPS. (I would not like to buy a BMW whose tires I have to fix. I have
paid for it, btw.)
15. Better Facebook(with chat), Twitter and IM app atleast Gtalk. Current one plainly sucks
16. Various bugs in Messaging to be fixed.
17. Select all and Mark as read option in Email app.
18. Universal availability of Social Hub Premium.
19. A little better sound output through speakers (it is based on personal taste only )
20. Text-reflow and Pinch-to-zoom in Email app.
21. Soft buttons for Menu and Back.
22. All applications to have Exit button.
more to come.................
Out of all these I have already solved 7th but then everybody can't make changes to the file system.
Yes, I do love Bada and its potential. Its simplicity is killing feature
Thanks !
I think user experience would benefit by implementing GPU acceleration in UI and browser as in IOS and Windows phone 7.

Hi all. @TigerCourage on AF I play with the camera settings file "CamSetting.ini" in folder "Registry" can be seen with the program "sTune" (I started some new options "IntelligentAuto" I do not know what does). There is also an option to focus on video recording "RecordFocusMode" from "0" to "2" default "0". Try setting but do backup before (right click and copy).

Hey how you copy a file because the file copied to the phone is only by drag and drop. If you are able to copy my files when you start the camera will see the icon "sA" without restarting the phone. Otherwise the effect of the settings I have attached the file with changed sound of shooting

Yes I copied by drag and drop and I've seen your "sA" icon at the beginning but the continous autofocus is nowhere to be seen...
Is there anyway to save camera shoot images in uncompressed format so that the quality of captured images will be maximum?
I would like to have a "fast-access" GPS button - next to the mute button ("green" menu). I'm really sure that this function will be very popular!

I would like to have more keyboard languages (with T9 or whatever it's called on the Wave).
I have seen a friend of mine with a Wave from Vodafone, and he has 30+ langage/keyboard optinons. On my wave (normal German FW) I have about 10. No Cyrillic characters, no Chinese, no Arabian...
How am I supposed to use the full functionality of such a wonderful phone if i can't write an email to a friend /business associate in Russia for example.
I could grump about it a few more pages, but the essence should already be clear
P.S. AFAIK the languages are stored in the CSC flash file, so it's not so easy to "just add" some in, but I hope someone from samsung might also see this and think about it.

MIUI for Beginners
Source: http://en.miui.com/a-10.html
Already flashed MIUI ROM? OK, pick up your phone now, let’s start our happy journey of MIUI ROM.
The first step: selecting apps
Various apps will greatly enrich your cell phone, so firstly let’s select the apps to your taste. Use the Android Market and download what you would like. If you are using a backup app and restoring apps from a previous ROM, only restore the apps and not the data. Otherwise that will create a lot of force close issues.
Tip: How to copy files from the computer to the phone? First connect your phone to your computer via data cable, pull down the notification panel from the top of the phone, click “USB connected”, and then click "Turn on USB storage”.
After copying, do not forget to select the option of “Turn off USB storage”, otherwise "File Manager” in the phone will not be able to find the sd card, as it is being occupied by the computer.
Now I have a lot of apps, how to put them in order?
All apps successfully installed are listed on the desktop, however, they may not be in the order you want, how to put them in order?
Long press an app icon and then you may move it freely. When it is moved to the screen border, the screen will automatically switch to the next screen.
How to add a screen? Use two fingers to pinch on the desktop to enter screen thumbnail mode. Then you may add or delete screens.
How to delete an app? Long press the app icon you want to delete, drag it on top of the trash box and click OK to delete it.
The second step: let's make your phone different.
A phone without style is nothing remarkable, so let’s make your phone different!
Changing wallpaper: Click Menu button on the desktop, select “Change Wallpaper” to replace the wallpaper. In addition to the existing wallpaper in the phone, thousands of pieces of wallpaper are also available online.
Changing theme: Themes make great changes to your interface style. Click “Theme Manager” on the desktop to select the theme you like. Also, more online themes are available online.
Selecting ringtones and more: click “Settings” on the desktop to set call and notification ringtones. In “Personalization” under “Personal” tab, you may find more options.
The third step: it’s time for some advanced techniques!
Well, you are no longer a beginner now, so let’s learn some advanced techniques.
Adding widgets on the desktop: press the Menu button on the desktop, select "Edit Mode", and then click the icon on the upper right corner to access the interface of “Add Widgets”. Choose your favorite widget on the top, and then drag it to the screen below.
Using folders to manage desktop apps: in the interface of “Add Widgets”, drag [Folder] to the desktop. You may drag multiple apps into folders to classify them. After opening the folder, you may click the edit icon in the upper left corner to rename the folder.
Using toggles panel to improve efficiency: drag the notification panel down from the top, click "Toggles" to go to the toggles panel (It goes to the toggles panel in default of notice.) On the panel are listed the most commonly used toggles, you may click to quickly enable or disable a toggle. Long press on the icon will launch the settings for that icon.
Guest mode: enable the “Guest Mode” toggle in the panel, and your calls and text messages logs will be hidden, and all installed applications cannot be removed. You may have a try when you need to show your phone to guests or children.
Importing contacts or binding accounts: you may use some apps to import a batch of contacts, or bind Google account directly in "Settings"> "Personal"> "Accounts & Sync Settings" to sync contacts at any time.
How to print screens? Press "Menu" key and "Volume Down" key at the same time to print a screen. The printed image is saved in the directory of MIUI in the SD card.
How to copy files from the computer without using the data cable? In case of a Wi-Fi connection, enter “File Manager” on the desktop, select the tab of "Remote Administration" to start the service, and then you will get an address. Enter the given address on the computer, then you may copy files without using a data cable!

The ui is beautiful and the rom overall is smooth, but got a lot of fc from the theme chooser, nofication setting and when making phone calls.

You should. Like I've said before, after trying many many ROM's, I've come to the conclusion that MIUI is EVERYTHING that I want in my phone and there will be no looking back to any other ROM's out there.
OMG OMG OMG official miui..... not a port....
Does the official rom still have the theme engine problem? I didnt see it in the changelog, and it was the only thing keeping me from using the miui ports.

Miui Rocks....it was the first Rom that truly set itself apart from CM roms and the like. It was my dd for a while but updates started coming out that required full rlashing, it became pointless. It seems that they are a lot more stable now....might come bqck and check them out again.
OP incredible job on the detail of your posts. One car certainly tell that you are not just theming and calling it a new tommy....cheers!

does MIUI have a good calendar/agenda app? I can't find one that beats Sense or Go Launcher EX at the moment.
Agenda Widget Plus and Pure Grid Calendar aren't as smooth or as well integrated =/
So beautiful and so tempting but it seems that it will never ever manage to utilize the functionality of the G2's Quick Keys =(

Same. Also does that when changing ringtones for notifications, though they do seem to apply anyway.

Should be fixed with today's (Friday) build.
With all due respect, what is the benefit of an 'official' MIUI ROM over any of the currently-maintained ports such as OsiMood? It does not seem like we are going to get G2-specific features like Quick Keys or Tab working.
Is the performance any better than these 'unofficial' ports?

This being official, I would assume that they are going to look at the g2 specific features a bit more?
Maybe I'm just being optimistic
Ima give the 3 roms a whirl, finally.
My phone number: Unknown
One issue I've noticed with this as well is that it can't read my phone number from the SIM card. That can cause issues with certain apps that require it (like TikL, for example).
Menu > Settings > System > About Phone > More information > Status
For me, that shows "My phone number: Unknown". And yes, I am sure my phone number is present on the SIM.

So Is this rom based in CM7 or not?
Is there a bug list for this rom?
Thanks
Is there a chance that this might be adopted for an official MIUI for the Captivate?
Oo shiny, I'm thinking this build of MIUI is playing nice with my screen this time.
Rather annoying being unable to answer calls cause the screen doesn't respond to touch.. Time to put the miui.us build on my Milestone
Thank you devs for starting a great thread

How to install it?

[APP][09/29/11] Book button menu. {NEW:LandscapeSwitch,Propagation}

Heya all.
Changelog:
1.1 - Added orientation switch and propagation (open "Reading Now") to Nook reader
1.0 - Initial release with home and CoolReader option.
Working on:
Investigating the way to distinguish if opening reading now book and not other epubs in order not to show menu on any library book click.
History/Idea:
Just got nook last Sunday as gift and immediately noticed after root that back/menu buttons in status bar is great, but would be even better to use book button as home OR as menu, was messing with framework, etc. to no avail, but finally got a better and simpler solution, but with cons.
After installing CoolReader I noticed that "reading now" button will trigger android select app menu with Nook Reader and CoolReader, so it is broadcast event, opening with CoolReader shows it is getting started epub.
So, here it is. Simple app, registers as one of the epub readers, by having last read in native nook reader any epub - and by pressing "reading now" button it will trigger app select dialog with my app in list (you can check to always open epubs with it).
It will show styled popup menu (see screenshot) containing only Home (will open default one or list of available homes if none selected as default), orientation switch, CoolReader shortcut (hardcoded now) and Nook Reader (this one will open remembered "Reading Now" book)
Cons:
1. Will be triggered on any broadcast event to open epub. (I don't care as I read in fb2)
2. If nothing in "reading now" it will not be triggered as well if "reading now" is not epub
3. hardcoded shortcuts for now
If it generates enough interest I can improve app (in current state functionality is enough for me). I could think of adding next features:
1. Add/Configure any shortcuts, e.g.:
* Back/Menu buttons in addition to home (this will required root to run)
* Add/Configure any shortcut
2. Add ability to propagate event data, e.g. if "reading now" sending "warandpeace.epub" to this app - send it to launching app if configured. This will allow to register this app to open epub and then open configured reader with epub data - done, besides configuration
3. Investigate launch origin (launching activity) and if it is not opening from status bar, but for example from astro/library - open configured reader propagating data.
4. Organize shortcuts as tree
5. Add recent apps submenu
Really interesting
It could even replace Button Savior in a subtler way
BTW, in the same spirit, do you know if it could be possible to change the app launched when you click on the home button in the menu that appear when you press the n button ?
hi,
i tried it and it works great, thanks!!
isn't it possible to launch the default app automatically, when pressing the button?
(on a side note: wouldn't it be possible to reconfiger the home button of the standard nook menu (the one that opens when you press the n-hardware-button) to launch the default android home?app?
edit: ok, somebody was quicker, i swear i didn't copy..

If it generates enough interest I can improve app (in current state functionality is enough for me). I could think of adding next features:
1. Add/Configure any shortcuts, e.g.:
* Back/Menu buttons in addition to home (this will required root to run)
* Add/Configure any shortcut
2. Add ability to propagate event data, e.g. if "reading now" sending "warandpeace.epub" to this app - send it to launching app if configured. This will allow to register this app to open epub and then open configured reader with epub data
3. Investigate launch origin (launching activity) and if it is not opening from status bar, but for example from astro/library - open configured reader propagating data.

Consider my interest highly generated. This is flat out great, especially if the option to go to Reader is built into Nook Book Button menu, and with the options of Back and Menu. I like Button Savior, but this has all of the same potential with a less obvious footprint and more seamless execution.
I'm running it now and this is really fun - if #2 can be done as well I see this as becoming an indispensible app for the nook touch root.

Thanks. I'm trying to get a clue if it was launched from "Reading now" button or from other app. I can easily distinguish between "Reading now" and let's say Astro, but cannot distinguish from Nook Library.
And... great news - I'll post update soon with working landscape/portrait button.
Working on: opening only from "Reading now" or other nook app, but skips to configured reader otherwise. Also, instead of CoolReader I'll have configured reader in the menu.
For the back/menu buttons this will require root.
It is possible to change "n" button, I have it configured as Search button and assigned SoftKeys to search button long press. I'll post instructions soon as well as modified SoftKeys to handle Search long press without need of external app and also with a bit more friendly colors for eInk (background of recent apps white instead of blured)

Do you mean just to launch let's say CoolReader instead of NookReader by the press of "Reading now" button?
I think you've done a great job. and I guess adding a list of (programmable) shortcuts on that button would be neat (like when copying several chunks of text from a pdf to a doc text or something of the sort).
Ok, story number 1:
I dissembled (smali) framework jars and now have good idea how that book button works, basically it send custom broadcast, problem is that broadcast not ordered, I can change service.jar to broadcast mine event and this will allow to configure how to act, e.g. you can configure as default (reading now so I'll just send original broadcast), popup this menu or launch any app including home or softkeys directly.
Will play a bit more if androidriority indeed works even for unordered sendBroadcast and if I can abortBroadcast to not allow original reader spawn - we can avoid modification of the service.jar.
story 2:
WindowManagerPolicy/WindowManagerService seams like directly invoking native (JNI) code on home button, I was playing with remapping keys and finally found one that works with single press (Call not bringing dialer at all, camera only sends broadcast at long press, etc.), but by default it will not awake device, will have to play if I can awake from broadcastReceiver, if yes - it means we can configure "n" (home) button to do whatever we want.
Well, I don't use coolreader, but the extra home button and portrait/landscape button works very well.
Great job!
For me, the only thing missing is adding 2-3 apps on the list, and I'll be quite happy.
I don't use the N button much, but it could become a neat menu or back button.
Great App
Thanks for spending time making this app for us Nook Touch users.
I think this app is definitely a candidate for partial refresh. Having the full screen refreshed to draw the small dialog seems to be overkill. Not sure if that's under your control or not...
I definitely have an interest in remapping the N button to home. Perhaps long press launches the original menu?
cheers! gr8 post,

thats what i meant! launching just one app automatically, let's say cool reader.. (maybe launching the home app automatically would also be possible? then we would have all the standard buttons in the task bar!)
cheers

Well, I've noticed that not all apps are turnable (haven't tried all yet, but I can spend like 30 minutes trying them all).
BUt great job nonesoever.
Having trouble
Would anyone know how I clear the default selection for the Reading Now icon in the status bar? The NookBB menu now will not come up anymore when I press the Reading Now icon.
It was working out great for me until this:
1) When I first installed NookBB (v1) and then pressed the Reading Now button, it would pull up a dialogue box asking which action I'd like to set as the default - either the Nook BB menu or the default Reading Now application (which would be the B&N reader app).
2) I selected as the default the Reading Now application (B&N reader). Then I decided I wanted to use the Nook BB as the default but couldn't figure out how to do it. The Manage applications for NookBB won't let me clear default there as it is greyed out.
3) I tried uninstalling, and installing v2. It loads the app icon to my app drawer, but the only way to invoke the Nook BB menu is to press this icon. Pressing the Reading Now button takes me to the B&N reader.
I have just found a very interesting app while searching something on github
(I posted it here mainly because I didn't want to start a new thread)
Relaunch (coded by yiselieren) is a filemanager / launcher / task manager for Nook Simple Touch. and it has very interesting features.
One of them is that when you click on the Home, library, shop or search button in the menu of the n button, you can choose to start ReLaunch instead of the default app.
I think it would be great if you could add something (more or less) similar to that in your app.
For clearing uninstall and reinstall should work. You can try installing any epub reader (such as coolreader) and it should bring selection popup back to choose default one.
Anyway I've done patching services.jar so it will load Nookbb by pressing that button with option to go directly to reading now not relying on epub files and *only* by pressing that button.
Also for the nook menu (n button) I done remapping (easy one) and almost done custom small app so n button will act as stock Android home one, e.g. it will go home with short press and bring recent apps (using softkeys now) on long press. Still have to tinker device wake if it's locked instead of going to home behind screensaver.
I plan to post it both tonight or tomorrow.
Then I can spend time adding customizations and partial refresh.

Thank you, uninstall didn't fix it but installing cool reader did.
Can't wait for the new fixes, very impressive already.

I'm loving this app and very excited to see a Touch specific app. If you further tweak the Book Button Menu I'd like the ability to subsituite the E-reader software of my choice instead of Coolreader. I'm currently using Mantano Reader and enjoying the software.

I'm currently finishing n button mod to act as stock android home (short click - goto home, long click recent apps list with all buttons (back, home, menu, search, orientation). Almost done - testing and trying to apply partial refresh.
Next step - I'll publish patched services.jar so BookButton will be launched only by this book button not relying on epub files.
Next will be settings for the BookButton to configure all aspects of the menu, e.g. appearance of Home, Orientation as well as custom shortcuts.
thanks, I realy like your application. Very usefull but I don't use "Cool reader". I use "read it later" and "ezPdf" for reading.
