[MOD]Windows 8 Metro Icons for Non-Metro Programs! - Windows 8 Development and Hacking

THIS IS NOT A QUESTION!
>Okay, so I had a thought, why try registry hacking to modify icons on the start screen when there must be a much simpler way? Well I may have come up with a solution... I have not personally tested this yet and it would only be a temporary solution although I don't see why it wouldn't work so let's see how it goes hey?
>My basic idea came when I was using my iPad earlier and got linked to the appstore, now I know this is hardly related although the same happen on computers, so what I thought is why not use a similar technique to launch desktop programs from a metro app (Or a website saved to the startscreen), using a bit of HTML and JavaScript it "should" be possible to launch a link to a program automatically when a page launches.
HTML:
Launch the executable
<script>
function LaunchApp() {
if (!document.all) {
alert ("Available only with Internet Explorer.");
return;
}
var ws = new ActiveXObject("WScript.Shell");
ws.Exec("{EXE FILE LOCATION}");
}
</script>
This is assuming you know the file location (There are other ways, this is the way iTunes does it) now the only thing you need to do is make a basic HTML file and make sure you include the icon for the Start Screen and a good title for it. It may seem like a lot of work although after you have one basic app you can make more faster and add them to your startscreen a lot faster I hope this helps some people, I will personally have a play with it later and see if I can build some example launchers for you to use. I also plan to soon write a full guide along with creating a proper windows 8 startscreen compatible website.

Oh this version is also based on IE being your default browser, I will add updated code in a few days (The only browsers you can add icons with are IE or Chrome anyway and an IE wrapper in the chrome webstore could fix this anyway!)

Pretty sweet, I'll test when I get home. Do you know if this could be used to work with Metro apps as well? I'd like to be able to set my own tile color, I prefer the "accent color" approach on Windows Phone. The various mish mash of random colors in Windows 8 gets under my skin.

quite possibly although I think you can actually edit metro apps anyway, I forget the directory though.

not sure.. haven't tried it yet though.. someone will I think. and he's coming in 3.... 2.... 1....

[App][BETA] Kill**** - process killer

This is my first app for WinCE so please be nice!
Rant
It seems I'm part of a minority of users who understand that mobile devices and PDA's are not designed to run multiple apps at once. You can, but anyone with a decent sense of quality will agree that it's a rubbish experience once you get under 50% free memory. In fact the iPhone by default design doesn't let you multi-task apps (jailbreak changes this) which may be one of the reasons peeps think its a faster device. I say I'm part of a minority because most apps around are coded so that when you hit the 'x' close button they minimize instead of close (even by holding x). Also Windows has no inbuilt mechanisms for keeping your apps closed, and none of the roms I've tried (cooked or otherwise) seem to have these types of tools included.
Disclaimer
Firstly I hope I haven't reinvented the wheel or stolen anyone else's idea. I didn't research for months but didn't find anything like this around so apologize in advance if I upset anyone. Also I provide this tool "as-is" in BETA form - so it could damage your device - so use at your own risk.
Kill****?! What is it?
It is a simple app that kills running processes.
Why would I want it - what's wrong with Task Manager?
A common example is you open up Calc to do divide a dinner bill, lookup how to get home in Google maps, send an SMS to a friend and hit Home key. Then you wonder why the thing is running like a dog. You open task manager and notice you have these 3 freakin apps are open still and taking up your memory. So you're expected to open Task Manager after every time you're finished with an app?...no I dont think so..because you've got Kill****! You manage an exemption file, assign the app to one of your softkeys (or events) and it will quickly, quietly kill all other **** running for you.
How Does It Work?
It stores a text file on disk with names of processes that you wish to exempt. You can manage this via the included config tool. When you run the app (which is a console app) it just kills every running process other than the ones on your exclude list. The exclusion file is stored in your default MyDocuments folder and is called something like "NoofnyKill****.settings". Real simple.
What Do I Need To Run It?
Microsoft Windows Mobile (4 and above)
Microsoft .NET Compact Framework 3.5
How Do I Install It?
Simply run the attached CAB and everything is installed for you. 2 icons are added to your Start Menu (the config tool and the console app itself). The app is installed in the default Programs folder.
How Do I Use It?
If the exceptions file does not exist it will be created new and will contain all of the running process at the time the app ran.
The best instructions are;
1) Have your device in your preferred state with only your basic apps running.
2) Open the config tool from the start menu (Kill**** Config).
3) All of the running processes will list with a check next to them (which 4) means they will be exempted).
4) Click Menu -> Save Exceptions and close the config tool.
5) Assign the console app (KilL****.exe) to one of your softkeys or other buttons using your favorite tweak tool.
What Else Do I Need To Know?
I am not responsible for anything negative or positive this app will do to you, your device or life. Use at your own risk. I have not tested this app well and can only guarantee that I have fundamentally screwed something up. If anyone does use it and wants help I will do my best but try to help by giving as much detailed info as possible when reporting any bugs. I'm open to suggestions and are planning to put the source code up here if anyone shows interest.
That's about it - hope it makes someone's life a little brighter.
Hi!
This looks interesting. Is there anyway to cook this into a ROM properly? I dont like to have users make a file in their my documents folder.

Thanks...i can have the file live anywhere really, I just chose MyDocuments cause its easy and accessible. It's easy to even have them define in the config tool where they want to save the settings. I'm new to mobile dev and the whole rom cooking thing, so could you expand about what would be needed to cook this app into a rom?
actually after giving it more thought it would be more practical to store this in the registry. I chose to use a text file at first because I was not going to bother have a config app and you could modify it using notepad or something.
In registry would be the most preferred method yes.

Noterrific - note keeping/structuring app

Noteriffic 0.53
Copyright (C) 2004 Rudis Muiznieks
Noteriffic is a quick little app I wrote because I felt that the PPC was
lacking a nice, simple, free note keeping/structuring application that has a
desktop counterpart....
All credit goes to Rudis, but now we have WVGA-Screens, so :
Could anybody of those famous and brave developers
compile this VB-Project for >> WVGA << ?
(Its working fine with QVGA and VGA)
Thanks a lot
Creature/entity appeared in mirror,
LOL
kahe40, I wanted to change something in this app the other day so downloaded a trial version of visual studio from MS plus dotnet compact framework. It let me edit the Noterrific source code and compiled a new version fine. I'm sorry I don't have time right now to work out incorporating WVGA, but thought you might like to know what I found out.
ps. if anyone wants the new source/compilation I can post. I simply added the ability for the app to remember which node it is on and return there next time it opens (otherwise it always ended up opening way down the list which drives me mad).
thanks ddk2, please have nice holidays, maybe later we can see...
what do you think about a dark grey background with white text ?
dont know, maybe there are problems with icons and checkboxes ?
and second: in settings, there is: use smaller font for list/display
would you please change to: use bigger font (only one step)
kahe40, did a very quick patch for you, no longer have large/small font, just textboxes so you can set your font size.
Source attached. Find exe's in each project (pda/desktop) in subdir bin\Release.
This version has my mods as described above.
Before you use it, take a copy of your data file (ntn ext) as mine was cleared out somewhere during testing and had to restore. I don't think its a bug, just something from testing, but take backup just to be safe.
Also did a quick test of grey background. Doesn't look that good to me, icons didn't come out well etc. Also presents issues that unless hardcode to grey, then need to make user option to set colour and that's a whole lot of frigging around....be my guest
very nice, good job, thanks a lot my friend
kahe40, don't know if you are still watching this but I just discovered I made a cockup in the last piece of code. I misinterpreted the use of one variable and the resultant problem shows up next time you go to add a node (I haven't added one for quite a while).
This version has corrected that. Also, changed the way I had it remembering which node it was on between sessions. Now saves with the apps variables (a sep file) rather than in the note file itself. Plus side is its much faster closing the app. Another sideaffect is that when syncing the file between pda and desktop, they each have their own memory of the last used node.
Yes, I am guilty my friend,
I traded my TouchHD for an iPhone, dont want to be banned from
this forum, but - man, oh man - what a wonderful OS ...
So I use the old version as shopping-list with my KS20 (QVGA).
Will test your new version soon, thanks a lot.

Program to make websites into cabs?

is there a program out there to make a favorite/bookmark into a cab file so it will install as a .ink or program file? my whole idea is to make a bunch for things like fedex/ups tracking, store locators, and random rss feeds and some random websites for easy access. i want to make a folder in my start menu for these and iconize them to look like apps. thanks in advance. i am 100% willing to share my work if i can get the program and i am willing to take on custom orders.
Something like this i found long ago
The only ways I know of are either making a Widget or Making an exe that browses the site like I believe that starbucks one is. I did something similar for YouMail In visual studio.

the starbucks.cab actually creates an .ink file that when launched, directs you to the store locator page on their site. i downloaded it probably 2 years ago and i forgot from where. it is exactly what i am looking to create. i dont want to make wigets because they take up alot more space than an .ink file. as you can see, this cab is a measly 12k and wigets can be 100k+.
I opened the cab in WinCe Cab Manager and it has an exe in it and also a shortcut its not hard to make one of these the exe is still very small mine for you mail is 22kb and it has a few feautures but it just gets the job done.
ive never used visual studio in my life, but i learn new software very quickly. let me know which version of visual studio i should use for wm6.5 wvga and i will get it crackin and pump out exes all weekend
btw with everyone looking at this thread, leave comments on which sites you would like me to create, like i said i got all weekend to work on this...
visual studio 2008 you kinda have to know a lil visual basic or some programming language you can now add 6.5 and 6.5.3 sdk's to visual studio.
cool im bout to start working on it now. thanks!
just downloaded vs 08. im reading all kind of tutorials ive found about it to make exes. lets see how long it will take me to figure this out
Are we talking like IE or Opera or something else?
Because for IE it's easy, you have Windows\Favorites and file name is what ie uses for name and inside is like
[InternetShortcut]
URL=ht+tp://something/
without the + of course

ok im stuck, please someone help if you can. i looked for a wm template for vsb8 to make exes and i cant find one, so i basically reverse engineered the starbucks app i uploaded to see if i can just switch out the site and icon and i cant. credit and appreciation is granted to anyone who helps out!
{SBR}_L3GION, thanks for the jumpstart on this. unfortunatly after 5 days of trying to get a template for wince exes, i had no luck. like i said before, i dont know a damn thing about vsb8 and i tried to learn and failed, so i am ceasing production with these. it was good while it lasted. again thanks.
for an easier approach, try using link creator from freewarepcoketpc.net. paired with an icon changer. you can grab any favorite you have saved and make a link to it in the start menu, then use icon changer to make a high def. icon. use iconpedia, they have awesome icons for free!

DolfinX

The new DolfinX looks very good performing Standards like HTML 5 and passing the Acid 3 Test. All other Systems are worser even Android don't supports more than the new Dolfin, i can only say thank you samsung for the good work even in a pre alpha release.
Performance Tests are currently not possible, cause the Emulator slows down the browser, only the real on device test would bring results. Testing on browserbench brings me only an fatal error while getting results, ...
The Pictures are made with Greenshot, the System is the Emulator 2.0.0b1rc1
The best thing Microsofts Internet Explorer 9 is worser than a mobile Browser
Hey there! Thanks for sharing first of all. There is just one thing which is not clear to me ^^
What does the first picture show? Homescreen editor, theme changer or tab switcher of the browser?
Best regards.
it shows theme switcher
good to know that new dolfin is that much powerful
everything looks great but it seems again we can not switch the browser to full screen mode (like bada 1.0) or maybe I am wrong I hope
i have already posted it that the address bar is like in android dolphin.
sorry I have not read the other topic for some time. Can you do one more test browser (on exactly FlashLite 4) may have opened a website video "vbox7.com" (sorry it is in Bulgarian) who works with "Ajax" technology.
yes on next sdk release, currently the flashplugin in the browser don't works correctly, it is still a beta sdk. please be patient, aslo performance test are not possible, error messages are shown after testing, on the site.
but there are also not much bugs left in the newest sdk revision, it smells like an early public version.
http://static.bada.com/releasenotes/2.0.0b1.html
this means that it deosn't work as accpected, many errors, maybe html5 will also get more features than yet, this is currently the beta 1 emulator. This would be cool, but as an alpha it supports more features than the opponents.
The older sdk 1.2.1 has more issues than 2.0 i think they wonna make it, nearly without bugs.

DO you know if now it is possible to create folders on sd card with SDK 2.0 ..
and what about the sd card? is it still read only?
It's a good news. MAybe the public version will come first half of the July. I hope.
@badamental yes
and the sd card isn't read only if so you would never be able to save something on it, or even delete.

SD card and Phone Mem is read only Please refer http://static.bada.com/contents/doc.../basics_bada_programming/bada_file_system.htm
for read and write permissionon phone memory and SD card.
try to construct a file directly on /media/ or /storagecard/media/ in a app. your app will crash and give exception Access_violation (something like this). For Now there is a workaround to construct a file first in /Home/ folder and then move it to sd /Phone memory using content manager.And thats how we could save a file on SD card or on phone memory.
Any way i dont care about creating a file. Actually i cant find a workaround to create a folder on /Media/ or /Storagecard/Media. Thats why i am asking about write protection.
You have understood it wrong man, yes it is read only for direct io writting, but think about, how you can download with youtube downloader videos on sd card?
You should also know that there is an extra api for such things with that you can delete, add or remove, replace content like video audio and image.
This is only for developers important not for a normal user, you can add remove blablabal files from windows or on the device. Apps must get a special api that they can use such things.
Or rather the privilege which is double testet by samsung to not hurt any personal informations. Funny you are installing apps on the sd card, replacing pictures, deleting files, renaming it, and you think it is read only.
It is a little bit complicated but i have no time to explain you how to develop an app in bada http://static.bada.com/contents/doc...rk/classOsp_1_1Content_1_1ContentManager.html
the content privilege is needet for the whole namespace
http://static.bada.com/contents/docs/apis/bada-V1.0.0a3/framework/namespaceOsp_1_1Content.html
The restrictions you posted are related to apps, they must be better programmed to use such functions.
Do we know something about text reflow?
yes there is text wrapping as option in the other topic you can see a picture, should give you the answer i hope.
This is really great.
Thanks for posting the screens.
btw do you know if it also has a 3D carrousel when you want to switch between different website that you running in the background?

You would need to target "Any CPU" in the .NET code, and recompile any third-party x86 libraries that you are using to target ARM, and it would probably work then. Most (although not all) of the system libraries on Win8 are also on Windows RT, and (at least in the case of .NET libraries), the ones that aren't can sometimes be brought over from a Win8 box anyhow.

At the moment, I am trying to get geckoFX 15 and xulrunner 19 added to the project so I do not have to use the default WebBrowser component given in Visual Studio. If you would like, I could send you the source and maybe you could help porting to Windows RT and adding geckoFX? Btw after v1.0 this will be Open Source to all Thanks for all the support guys.
Works now thanks, scrolling is a little hitchy how ever its a great start. On another note would it be possible to make the onscreen keyboard auto pop up?
Will the flash be optimized, the browser is really fast. Its just the flash side of things that is buggy.
Seems to bypass the Flash whitelist on Windows RT. That's quite handy.
Re: [APP] Lemon Browser v0.9.7.3
I can surely attempt the auto pop up on screen keyboard, also the glitchy scrolling will be fixed soon. Thanks

Just FYI: a web browser requiring Administrator to run is absolutely unacceptable. Browsers should run with extremely limited permissions (lower than standard user, ideally) rather than elevated permissions. I fixed this by hand-editing the .EXE file's embedded manifest to run AsInvoker (rather than RequireAdministrator). You should change the manifest in VS. Preferably, the whole thing would run in a low-IL sandbox the way IE does, and/or use some other sandboxing technique.
Also, there's little reason, especially for RT-targeted builds, to use Debug unless you include the source files and expect people to use them when reporting bugs. Release builds are typically smaller and faster.
Finally, could you get this to use a somewhat less awful rendering engine than IE7? I don't mind using Trident in general, but IE7 is archaic and awful. How do you justify "faster than Chrome" on a browser that can't even pass Acid2, much less run a modern speed benchmark? Gecko would be awesome, though I don't believe anybody has managed to port it to RT yet so that would be x86-only at first.
There are other things I'd like to see, ranging from simple UI conventions (double-clicking the tab bar, tapping Alt to show the menu bar, etc.) to some significant security issues (loading mixed content - that is, HTTP content on an HTTPS site - is a potentially serious risk).
Re: [APP] Lemon Browser v0.9.7.3
I appreciate the feedback, about the debug, i honestly did not even think about that, its just much faster to update using the debug folder. I will make it the release build next time. Next - about the admin permissions - Unfortunately this is needed to enable the temporary download of version.txt (allows OTA updates). And I was not planning on targeting the RT at all. I simply made this on my windows 8 laptop and released to the public for however they would like. I am now working on a 3D FPS though and will be releasing the code to this very shortly. And for the IE7 subject, I tried using firefox component but it does not allow the "LoadComplete" sub. Simply put, I do not know how to do 'if web page loaded' do this. I need this feature so i can load favicons etc. Please understand that this was made < 1 week ago. I highly appreciate all the comments though because I can not even begin testing all of these. Plus with school and other activities I do not expext this to be a huge project. Just simply a fun project (focused on gui) to add to my projects. Thanks again
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
No worries on the Debug/Release, just a tip.
The admin thing, though... that's a serious problem. If the problem is just downloading a file, download it to the local application data folder instead of the install directory. If auto-updating is desired, make a separate updater that runs as Admin, and have the browser launch the updater program when it detects an update.
That said, though, admin is only needed if the browser is "installed" to a location where Admin is required to write. Programs installed in (for example) the user profile don't require this. In fact, on machines where the user *can't* get Admin (think about computers at a school, library, or office), the fact that it can install and run without requiring admin is a major advantage.
I understand that this is a side project for you, and I applaud you for hobby programming and sharing it with us, that's fantastic to see. I also do quite like the GUI, although I find it a bit bare-bones at the moment. Additionally, you getting it to work on RT is fantastic. However... I cannot in good conscience recommend using a web browser that sets the state of environment security back by nearly seven years. The web is an extremely hostile "place" and we've learned many lessons over the years. one of the critical ones is that web browsers are simply too easy to attack for them to be trusted; the only safe way to use one is to assume it will be compromised, and run it in a suitable contained environment. Microsoft did his with the IE7 Protected Mode on Vista betas in 2006, but even on XP it was possible to run IE as a non-Admin.
Re: [APP] Lemon Browser v0.9.7.3
I will admit chrome will always be my favorite browser Just wanted to throw something visually appealing together though after seeing all the horribly designed ones on youtube lol. If anyone would like the source just email me. The code is (slightly cluttered) but OCD friendly. everything labeled and named properly. If someone would like the source, i recommend also downloading the android holo icons from their site. That is what I am currently using and this allows identical pre-made light / dark icons.

Hello !
really thank for this build ! :good:
A question:
Can you integrate a download manager which allow us to download files with screen off but which avoid the complet stand-by state of the tablet during the download ?
Because with IE it's impossible to download something with the Surface screen OFF.
It could be a really cool feature, and the only browser which allow that ! :highfive:

Thanks! I appreciate that aha. Major update (kinda lol) will be released soon. Have to work on Mango Tools first (I might toss a thread up on this tool) but this can be found on my site mellowdev.net It just allows you to easily perform ADB commands on android phone. Anyways right after this I will work on v0.9.8! Hoping to add lots of cool, unique features to give this browser an edge. I know that speed means a lot and I have received many complaints on using the IE7 component. However my focus at the moment is to add features. Web browsing for most is just type in words and search. I want this to be so much more. So anyways aha thanks again. Love the support here!
