[Q] How do I "unsluggish" my epic? - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've rooted my epic with the rooted fc09 stock rom. Put a couple of tweaks in build.prop and tried the supercharger script, which was a disaster so I restored a back up. I've tried different launchers (twlauncher was fine, to be honest, but ended up with the FC problem that everyone evenetually gets) like Go and now FTL and ADW. But everything is really laggy and sluggish and it's really frustrating.
Didn't realize how little memory this thing has so it hovers in the 50-100mb free range, but I don't think that should be the problem right? I know it wasn't like this when I first got it and I've checked what's running and not a lot (I already killed the drm stuff, although I'd love to know how to get rid of media hub).
It seems the stock rom should be able to perform okay - this isn't a majorly used phone (facebook, messaging, web are pretty much everything it's used for), so, at least for now, I'd just as soon stay on rooted stock vs a new rom. And upgrading isn't happening for another 8 months. So...any suggestions or pointers from anyone??
Thanks!

My other Epic was very laggy with ADW so put Zeam on it and hadnto redo my GFs homescreens exactly the way they were....or else...lol.

Have you tried the Peoples ROM it is stock rooted but on MTD? Your sluggishness and FC almost sound like EXT4 unstable issue with battery pulls ect.

Haven't tried any other roms yet, but I'll be damned if the ICS review doesn't look amazing. If I was going to jump, I'm thinking that might be where I'd go. Any quick big gotchas there?
I was also curious if you could expand on the ext4 unstable comment? Haven't had to do any battery pulls until after the supercharger script (don't know if the battery pulls are cause or effect in your comment). Also, I probably should have mentioned that this is BML stock (I realize I would have to "convert" to go to any other rom).

The battery pulls caused the unstable effect on EXT4 which was the knock on it. Not sure if you are on EXT4 or not pure stock is RFS. Beware of any ICS ROM's battery life isn't the greatest so if that is important to you avoid. They have come a long way with mods etc. but still can be a hassle. If you really want to jump from stock may I recommend CM7 great battery life and super smooth and fast
EDIT:
Just remember something about journaling on EXT4 off caused the unstable issue and on solved it? I think I still have the zips let me know if you want to try but you need to find out if you are EXT4 or RFS there is a command you can type in terminal but i can't seem to locate it at the moment.

Cm7 is really nice but I prefer ics to it, cm9 is really smooth and has almost if not everything is working, aokp has a lot of features and I prefer it over cm9 except the later builds have been sluggish for me. Right now I'm on paranoid android and its awesome, but its only on alpha right now so if you want everything working go with cm9 or aokp, or cm7.
I find the stock rooms were all sluggish though but I haven't tried one since ei22 so my opinion might not count there. Try em all qbking77 has easy to follow guides and if you find one you like stick with it

As much as I preferred the ICS of CM9, for pure speed CM7 under Gingerbread with Zeam launcher was my sweet spot for maximum speed.

Don't know if it was the wipe, the switch to MTD, or the switch to The People's Rom, but it performs much better now actually.

I vote all of the above but my first guess would be The Peoples Rom LOL.

I agree. I was on CM9 from its alpha days up until Beta 4. Amazing ROM, but it was never as speedy as the last MarcusantRom I was on prior to ICS. I closely watched the development of TPR by Kenny as I stuck with CM9. Performance was good, though it was slower than I wanted. Then I started getting annoying FCs on apps and would have to restart them. Plus I was on an old PRL and EI22 and wanted to update to FC09. So I decided I would make the jump back to GB, hoping to get back my speed.
Short story long, TPR is by far the quickest and snappiest Rom I've ever used. Not as feature rich as others may be, but I think that's a plus, because it has all the necessary tweaks to make it fly. And that's the beauty of Android. You can customize it to your heart's content.

[Q] Best Rom I have Found is MIUI. But want to have more updates

Best Rom I have Found is MIUI. But want to have more updates. Would like to know where you get the weekly updates or better yet can some one tell me how to add it to ROM Manager then I can just get the update there.
Here is what I have Tried so far
WarmTwoPointTwo RL5 (Great Rom if you like Sense) Good Job
EivO 2
Ava-froyo
Koni Elite
CM7 w/4G (Really Great Rom) Just don't like the dialer
HTC EVO 4G got First Day. Rooted 2 weeks ago.
More updates? MIUI is updated weekly, which makes it one of if not the most often updated ROM there is (excluding CM nightlies). Anyhoo, I agree with you wholeheartedly that MIUI is the best ROM out there and would like to personally welcome you to the MIUI family Not sure about ROM Manager because I prefer to do everything manually (not to mention Amon > Clockwork). Here is the link to the MIUI forums where you can grab the updates.

Miui
Thanks Downloading now ..... Been trying a bunch of differant kernels as well.
Really like this rom...
Any word if there will be 4g added soon?
MikFroyo is also one of the better (if not best) Sense roms.
I use Miui as well.
No need to make this thread though lol...

I know they are working on adding 4G but I have no clue when it will happen. The problem is that the ROM is actually developed in China and is closed source, the guys who give it to us just do the porting and translation. So it's up to the Chinamen to add the 4G, and since there are no EVOs in China, I'd imagine it's not a top priority for them.
4G is a big deal here in the usa. Is there any want to donate to them to get the job done sooner?
Thanks in advance
Donate to the Chinamen? I'm not sure. I'd post that ? over at the miui-dev forums. Keep in mind, they didn't build the ROM for the USA or even for the EVO. It is made for the N1 and the awesome devs here are the ones porting it. I would just sit tight, we'll have it soon enough.
Ok, this build is pretty much the same. But I love it. Iphone 4. Theme

The bulk of the differences between builds are under the hood, but new features do get added all the time. I know there is supposed to be some big UI overhaul coming soon but couldn't tell you when.
Love love MIUI, just wish it had better battery life. Phone is losing 10-12% / hour just sitting idle, wifi or 3g doesn't make much difference. I need to try another kernel for sure, just not sure which one and hoping the update this week (if it gets released for Evo) fixes some things.

Go to miui-dev.com and join in the fun. If you like tweaking, flash the mods and try out some themes.
The mods they have posted are kinda blah.
One bug I found is the time on the text messages is like 6 hours off on the popup and
where it displays all of the threads. When you go in to the message it displays the right time. Little bit of a pause on lock screen.
Overall this is the Best rom I have tried.
Just get 4G and I will never look back.

That's not a bug, it's a setting. Go to the text app, hit menu then scroll to the bottom and hit advanced. Scroll down to where it says Sort SMS by date and make sure that slider is off so it says sort messages by time received locally. That should clear that up.

[Q] What is the most bare-bones, vanilla ROM out there?

I just need the basics, nothing flashy, etc..
Working 4G is preferred since I actually have the service.
i would try azrael x v4 its looks just like stock, but it includes a few tweaks of its own, its pretty fast, small on size and very stable, just remember to do a nandroid backup before flashing, if you have titanium backup i would back up all my apps with it too, for easy restore, then wipe data and caches before you flash new rom, and you are ready to go, almost forgot i also use mybackup to back up my contacts and stuff like that
try Stock Turbo
it's so minimalist that u will have 400MB+ after fresh flashing

All of them? I didnt realize there was more than 1.
How many come with the "stock" ROM?
Well CM7 uses the new TMobile theme engine so there are a bunch of basic themes for it and some are done more so than others. Like Sculpted uses some different icons for the status bar and not sure how deep the themeing goes when you get deeper into it but I think more so than most. Some just take the GB Green and jazz the colors up and some stand alone themes do more 'drastic' themeing. Ill pop a pic up of the cyan themed CM7 you can see stock icons and status bar colors are changed. There are quite a few though so I would suggest you hit the themes section and start checking em out. Some are in the market and are part of the theme engine, I think there are still some that are stand alones but I may be wrong.

The dev thread "yet another aosp gingerbread ROM" has a link to a ROM that's in between Salvage-Mod and CM7. Still has the tweaks of CM7, but uses the stock launcher instead of ADW. Salvage-Mod is the closest to stock though, I think.
There are tons of themes for the t-mobile theme engine on CM7, so you're going to have a hard time getting screen shots of all of them. Easiest to just flash CM and try them out.

There is the link to the thread I was talking about. I ran it for a few days, it's very stable.
As far as VaelPak, it is an awesome ROM, one of my favs and a must for anyone looking to try something new. However, IMO it's about as far as you can get from a bar bones ROM.
I guess what Im really looking for is the barebones Gingerbread theme. And then, along with that, a pretty stripped down, only the essentials, ROM.

This ROM WILL NEVER BE THEMED, THERE ARE TOO MANY OUT THERE THAT ARE AND EASY TO ADD TO THIS ROM IF YOU LIKE THOSE THEMES I PREFER STOCK, THIS ROM WILL BE UPDATED ONLY TO INCLUDE NEW FEATURES, IT WILL BE OPTIMIZED. I ASSUME YOU BOUGHT THIS PHONE FOR PURE GOOGLE EXPERIENCE AND THAT IS HOW IT WILL STAY.
First get ROOT HERE
This is a ROM i put together, it is stock, zipaligned, deodexed with the battery fix that displays proper battery charging status. Included is netarchy's kernal 1.3.2 CFS. This was taken from stock rom so everything works. This rom is voodoo supported and all features work flawlessly.
THANK YOU TO NETARCHY FOR HIS KERNAL, COMBINED WITH THIS ROM GETS A QUADRANT OF 3103 WHEN OC'D TO 1.3 smartass
Make sure to wipe all, including delvik, cache, and data. Flash and enjoy. Also i get the best results when i set setcpu to 200 min and 1.3 max.
V_1 http://www.4shared.com/file/ZTt2qKd7/Gerbal_ROM.html?
***Just a word of advice, i seem to get no performance boost going from oc'd 1.3 to 1.4, i think it affects the governor in a bad way.
I have parted with my Nexus S 4G due to connection, reception, issues that I couldn't wait for sprint or Google or Samsung to address. I will update this rom with tweaks and such but the base will not but updated as i have returned to the Evo forums.
Updated the bootanimation in the rom..you will have to redownload and flash for it to take affect or download the bootanimation and flash via adb to /system/media
I'm getting the Nexus S 4G tomorrow and will be giving this a try. I'm coming from the Evo and I hope the Nexus 4G gets just as much love from developers as the EVO did. I doubt it, but thanks kpkimmel for the Rom. Like I said I will be flashing soon!
So how does the battery tweak work? I understand the 93% full charge is a safety feature. Does the tweak offset the numbers?
Yes, it offsets, so it should show 100%
Updated adfree to current host.
When you have a chance mind posting some screen shots? Thanks

Yes it is, saw it on another rom and like it. Part of battery tweak.
I like this ROM, did a few adjustments with setCPU (posted a thread in General with my slightly modified advanced settings) and my battery is doing well. Haven't had this phone for more than 5 days, but noticed better results than other roms.

I use Launcher Pro Plus, no issues at all. and in setcpu i have only one profile setup, its screen off max:400 min:100... any lower than 400 the screen doesn't turn back on.
same kernal included in rom (net's 1.3.2)
if you are having issues, try reverting to netarchy's stable release
i believe a BFS kernal is supposed to rid lag and latency, i dunno, i just use CFS, i feel its better on battery

CFS is better on bat, i havn't had any issues with the kernal provided but if you do have problems you can simply flash an alt. kernal.
thx for the quick response ev1. Ya I have tried the stable and beta builds and so far 1.3.2 CFS works the best on my phone. But any kernel I use I have lag from time to time.. I am starting to think its ADW EX issue now... FML I love it too.. Oh well I will try another and test out. But about to flash this ROM now to check it out. Thx again ev1 AND thank you for the work you contribute to the XDA community!! Much props.
Is there any way i can use the battery mod with stock rom? I'd flash this rom but i wanna stick with stock for a little longer since i just bought this phone.

[VZW][Rom+Kernel] VZW EFO1 Better Than Life Confidence and Paranoia V2.0 Released 814

A....is for Apple
Updates
Gingerbread for Verizon, with 3G, and Full Root, and De-bloated. Also did TouchWiz 4.5. Oh, its the real Deal, the real Verizon EFO1 Gingerbread base.
Worked alot on this the past few days, trying to get it out as a suprise to you Verizon guys by thursday, but man.....my back and arms are killing me, had to take some breaks.
Before the details.....
I need to get on a knee here and thank DirtyDroidX, and P3Droid. Because if it wasnt for them, I wouldnt have this build, I would be releasing a hacked Sprint GB with a half working 3G. Also, Spacemoose for his continuing support, and help with the Kernel, recovery, the questions, the calls, it never ends for that poor guy.
I want everyone to go out, and buy the Team BlackHat app TODAY as a thankyou to them for delivering this much needed resource to me, and Donate to DirtyDroidX, and to Spacemoose, they all pitched in alot of work. Im serious, get the TBH app, donate to me some other day. Im doing this for you, not the money.
Ok, details.
This is EFO1.
Verizons Gingerbread.
This is not so much a leak (though it could be considered a leak by me, im not leaking it) This IS the EFO1 that TBH has released today, however, I worked it so much that P3Droid agreed that it is my build, so I felt confident and not paranoid ( lol ) about releasing my build today.
What did I do?
Debloated
53 pieces of CRAPWARE EFF YOU Verizon!!
TouchWiz 5
Full 100% without question Root (damn, it was a ***** to, however i cant believe my newb ass did it)
FULL working 3G !!!!!!!!
Version 1.0 of Confidence and Paranoia is running the Stock VZW Kernel and Recovery. Spacemoose is working on a Kernel Fix for this right now. As it stands, its Either 3G on Stock Kernel+Root, or Custom Kernel+Recovery and Root, I decided the 3G was more important
Seriously, donate to those guys, by the app, so my relationship continues to be good with them and I can get stuff like this, as it is, I am giving them all the source material they want from this, so dont be surprised if this is on the TBH soon.

Special Thanks go to..
Spacemoose, for his sexy phone voice, and constant answer to my unorthodox ways of doing things.
DirtyDroidX, for giving me the Leak to leak, and build what we now have
Fr4gg0r, for allowing me to use his TouchWiz 4.5 in my build, without his secondary apps, and allowing me to theme it. I left his donate button in the app.
Did I mention Dan, Spacemoose, Dan the man, man dan is the man. There, that kills off any chance of someone other than a newb thinking DAN is a chick. LOL
Thought I would tease yall with progress from the update I am working on.....

No, but coming, and FYI, this is the fastest, smoothest Rom I have had to date, its my daily now for sure.
works great
Well, all my market apps are back on, so far everything working nicely. Even Netflix.
Even Intuits GoPayment app works. Its very finicky with the card swiper. The stock kernel is great. I suspect when we get the overclocked kernel, things will fly even faster!
Once I do a backup from Spacemooses rom should this be an easy install?

I will never release a flashable zipped product again. I find flashing with heimdall so much easier, stable, and I know it works. Plus I can drop in just specific files right away. And it cuts my dev time in half.

Working beautifully on my tab Jim.
Thanks for getting this together for us.
Great rom oldman.
Having freezes and force-closing with launcher, installed adw, issue resolved.
Thanks for the hard work

Having same issue with TW (was having it with the last build based from the Sprint update also). Freezes up when you long press the homescreen.
Great work though. Loving this rom, for sure the best rom to date for the VZW tab.

Did you guys do a full Wipe right after install?. I installed this on a few tabs back and forth ranging from Froyo installs to this, including the Sprint Rom im working on as well.
Also, I noticed the past few weeks, Gingerbread doesnt like SDCards for some reason, its a pain in my ass as my card is a 32GB, but I formatted the card prior to flashing so i would have a fresh SD Card. But I also have like 12TB on my computer to toss an SDcard onto. Sucks to, slow cards.
hey jim for soe reason im not getting 3g on the new release i did everything to the T but nothing any ideas? might that me a modem issue?

Yep did full wipe. Also tried with no SD too and touchwiz still delayed FC when I did a long press on the homescreen.

I am going to start providing updates, changelogs, and other new info in the second post.
I now know about this TW bug, and will explain in 2nd post

Which KitKat 4.4.x ROM have you used on an SPH-D710 and would recommend?

A few years ago this seemed to be limited to either Cyanogen or a couple other ROMS, I had performance issues with CM9 and used a custom ROM instead. Now it seems like everyone has their own flavor and builds. I'm currently on a 4.1.2 ROM, I think it was SlimBean.
I'm just looking for a close-to-stock 4.4 ROM for Sprint Epic 4g Touch, that is stable and works. Does anyone have a ROM you have tried and would recommend?
I'm leaning towards Mookie or CM11
Thanks and sorry for the noob post.
Its not kitkat, but have you checked out Project X ? I am running KitKat on my nexus tab. Though have solid custom rom options that am bouncing between , really wish I could install Project X .

I had not, but I did some googling and it looks pretty nice. I may download it and give it a try.
I already installed CM11 VILLUMINATI. It was a bit tricky, but after following the steps at the bottom of page 77 of that thread, I got it running and it seems fine so far. CM always takes some time for me to get used to, so I'll run it for a few days and see how it goes.
Hope it goes well. Must say, battery life is crazy good and the highly customize-able launcher (can save settings and implement when flashing updates et cetera) @bilgerryan created are awesome - like borderline time for a tattoo time awesome. Not to mention the folks in the forum are cool - good people. Anyway, good luck with everything.

Thanks! So far, I only have a few issues with the build. I can't figure out how to get rid of the Google search bar at the top and I can't figure out how to scale the number of columns/rows on the desktops. Other than that, the lack of 4G is hardly noticeable, even here in Silicon Valley. Can't get Kies to restore my data via USB, going to try WiFi connection tonight.

From my experience, you can't do anything with kies unless you have the version of android that's originally on the phone. So it's either Kitkat or 4.1.2, bloatware, and kies. I think we both know who the clear winner is here! I've also been using the VILLUMINATI ROM and I've had exceptional battery life and fast response from my phone at the same time. As for the Google search bar at the top, I think that is permanent unless you download one of those custom theme app thingies (can't remember what they're called), but doing that kinda defeats the purpose of having Kitkat for me, as I absolutely love the new white theme with everything. I've also noticed that from using those theme apps before that they tend to drain battery fast.
EDIT: As for 'what rom I would reccomend' it would have to be VILLUMINATI, even though it's the only one I've used so far. It works, and it's good. I'll be using this rom until there is a better update somewhere, or if I find a game breaker somewhere.

You know there are custom TouchWiz ROMs out there don't you? With tons of extra features and no bloatware. I say try my Project X and see if you still go with the bug-filled AOSP ROMs with quiet mic volume and speaker volume. BTW Kies is useless, try using Titanium Backup or ROM Toolbox next time.

Ok, I'll take a look at your rom later, thanks. Also, I have never really used kies except just to see what it was, I was just referring to the post I quoted.

Here are my two cents. Personally, I like VILLUMINATTI better than Mokee, mainly because Mokee has a weird thing it does when scrolling lists. It makes the lower list items really small, and expands them to full size as you scroll down a list. Cool looking once or twice, but not something I can handle on a daily basis. They are both extremely fast and smooth ROMS, and they use very little RAM, like 30% less! Just make sure to get the best ICS modem for your area (mine was FE22), update the GPS config file using FasterFix, and load in Textra so you can activate MMS easily. Of course, you'll loose 4G and dock connectivity with either ROM.
However, I can't use the 4.4 ROMS right now because they both have the same two bugs. Firstly, the Orientation Sensor doesn't respond correctly. Secondly, they don't communicate well with Google Glass (no phone calls). So I went back to Touched By an S4 ROM, which is a TW based 4.1.2 ROM that performs really well "out of the box".
Once those two bugs are fixed I'm definitely switching back to VILLUMINATTI CM11 because it unleashes this phones true capabilities.
Given the above offerings, coupled with the fact that only the individual user can make their own determination as to what is most stable for their device, going to close this.
XDA is not a support site as it relates to asking what is most stable, best etc, for roms and or kernels. This is because threads like these become places of arguments and trolling commentary.
All users are expected and encouraged to do their own research and review of development threads to arrive to the answer they need.
