Jelly bean - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

So is anyone excited for this update like i am i know its not a major one but what we do have is great
WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK ABOUT IT

i think jelly bean is exciting, a massive speedup in terms of the UI, new notifications, new stuff in the play store. awesome speech stuff and new google search... and thats just what i can remember

smh. One whiff (a small one at that) and noses go wide open.
Shouldn't we wait for the ics update first?

That will never happen. The only way JB is hitting our phone is if we do it.
I'm really thinking of going back to a Google phone. Less of the features I really want, but at least the new toys hit it first and fast.
Oh and yea Galaxy S is getting it!! But Sammy will never push it to our phones, and you all know I'm right.

i think for the most part the new notification is by far what im after camera upgrade to

Offline voice actions will be a huge help to the utility and speed of voice commands. Other than that, meh. Of course I'm excited though, and will flash anything
I'm definitely waiting for the next Nexus for my next phone purchase. It's hard to not get caught up in the GS3 hype, but its such a minor upgrade to our phones' specs......the GS3 will be many, many months before it sees 4.1.

Hope Samsung port it to the S3 fast. So we can use it. I like it really much!
So guys ... keep it rockin' ;-)

I'm guessing because most people wouldn't be toting a tablet around to take pictures of other things besides themselves. With my original galaxy tab, I was surprised how well the back camera did for video but it was too easy to cover the mic with your hand when in landscape mode. Also, the official portfolio case for it covered the rear camera and led.

A little OT but all the laptops that google is using during the google IO are Macs.... LOL

So I didn't have an android phone during the froyo to gingerbread update, which from my understanding is more like this than 2.3 to 4.0. I know we have had lots of trouble with kernel source and all sorts of other issues. Was this due to the fact that it was such a big difference, and so maybe this time it would be easier for our great devs to get this going for us once code drops? Obviously we can't know for sure until then and I'm not trying to offend anyone or seem greedy, I am just curious if this is how android works, or if not.
Thanks.

That is because google banned windows a long time ago from their offices.

So, can anybody think of any good reasons why we couldn't get the new voice search and Google Now on our phones now? I personally don't understand why we would need a new operating system for that. But, I really know nothing about what goes on behind the scenes with programming and development, so I could be totally wrong. What are your thoughts?

Im in your boat, but i thought about it and its like, what would you go to? Downgrade to a GN with no SDcard slot and crappier camera?
Well eventually get ICS, MAYBE CM9, and when ICS is out some roms based on it. I wont spend hundreds just to get ICS a couple months early on crappier hardware.
I may sell it in the summer for a GSIII depending how that looks, but i wont side/downgrade.
Any reason why you guys didn't post this in his screen fix thread directly? He's still responding to questions over there

Understandable, (un)fortunately there really isn't a better option unless its the Exynos version or the GNex, and i like the term "side"-grading because that's really all it is. What's bugging you about it? I think I'm GLAD that I can take a rest from all the flashing and sleepless nights battery calibrating finding the best combinations of roms and kernels (this is my first android, coming off 4 years of Bberry). How will a new device change your user experience/expectations?

Worth switching over?

Okay so I just dropped my HTC One S and it completely shattered the screen.
I'm getting a replacement and I'm going to sell that replacement.
Question to you is, how is the Galaxy Nexus?
I might get a 4.1 Jelly Bean one for $350 from the Play Store?

One S is pretty fast phone, and what I see here is it's going to get JB pretty soon.

If you had exynos version you know what I mean.
But don't forget I'm rocking GN on jelly bean and loving it. But that doesn't mean I can't say some bad about it.
2 things to consider if I were you:
1. If you want the pure Google experience, not a hybrid vendor/android phone; definitely the GneX or wait until later in year for the Nexus line.
2. If you prefer a bit more "powerful" hardware right now, the Galaxy S III is the best option in my opinion. Of course you have to deal with Carrier lock and Samsung's TWiz running on top of Android OS.
Both are win win situations, just depends on your preference...

Will there be a decent amount of community support?

Lately I've been noticing a lot of developers saying that they are going to quit developing for samsung due to the lack of support they are are offering to the community. Do you think this will affect the releases of ROMs or user fixes to the point of not being worth it to buy this device? Thanks.
The community will try to cook rom for all samsung devices, but when these are not very popular or will become old will be abandoned

Yes, i`am convinced it will be supported well. The GN2 will be even a bigger success as the GN1 i believe. Getting mine in 5 days
I think there will be some type of good support.. I mean it's still pretty early in the release... And I'd still buy it if it's not supported by a lot of roms.. Doesn't take away of how much of a beast the phone is

If anyone has the OG Note, even that device doesn't have amazing support. At least we have CM tho...of which I'm running PA 2.17 CM10. However, as long as the GN2 receives CM10, all will be fine. I'm torn with how I feel about CM possibly abandoning Sammy...the GN2 is really all about features, that's what makes it better. CM just neuters spen features anyways.

Well, let's not get cocky now that we moved onto a newer device. I can just see ourselves in the same damn frustrating position in just over a few months may be, since even the Dinc4G is not a flagship Verizon device... It is super annoying, they will may be not update this too... They managed to screw even the Nexus owners with an ungodly 2 month delay. It is either iPhone for timely updates or a non CDMA truly open GSM nexus... which means bye bye verizon. Anyway, I hope that I don't have to bother about updates with the Dinc4G. It is good with ICS and I hope that I won't "need" an update to make it work any better...

I'm on the Dinc4G too and I am happy. It is fast. ICS is infinitely better than and more bearable than GingerBread. It is like the OS matured. After ICS, it seems to be mainly refinement and unless I am being super anal about it, I don't think it matters. So, therefore even if we get screwed over in the future on updates, I can be confident that I have a really nice working OS. I can potentially neglect trying to keep my phone up-to-date and be like all my friends who still work with GB phones and think that is the most up-to-date one...
All I need is root for some of my apps and some toggles on the notification panel and I am set. Unless a future OS update makes the phone unbelievably awesome, it is not critical. Is anyone else thinking like me?

Yup, this is not a new update. Same one from this summer...

Then my phone must be crap. B/c it just got pushed to my phone. When I re-locked the phone and checked for updates it said I had no updates available.

Heads up .. 4.2 Update; one step closer

Honestly, I remember back in the Epic 4G days when Samsung had the reputation that they did not support their devices, but it appears they've changed their attitude and now they're releasing updates like mad, even more efficiently than HTC is (at least for CDMA-based devices.)
If this is true, then the Samsung devs in charge of CDMA development will start porting it over to our devices. Perhaps we'll see RDFs in the next few days?
Very interesting... I'll be following this thread closely.

I had an Epic as well and it seemed like Samfirmware was our only hope. I share your sentiments and look forward to any changes Samsung is willing to make with regards to device updates.
I'm from the OG Epic as well (from its release to the s3 release); It is really refreshing to see them pushing out the updates for this phone!!
I too am from the OG Epic. People continuously blamed Samsung for the slow updates for it when in reality rdfs were being generated and test releases sent to Sprint almost daily and within weeks of the international update. I think the less intrusive touchwiz allows for faster updating. So hopefully we will see some rdfs reported soon.

Also a fellow OG Epic user ... boy I miss that phone (still drooling over that keyboard), but also love my GSIII. Nice to have the OG Epic family reunited here. If Samsung releases a 4.2 update for the GSIII in the near future, I'll take back all the bad things I said about them
hah what are the chances that 4.2 gets released before the s4 marketing train comes rolling through town

X2. Also, you see Samsung promo the crap out of this phone, unlike what they did with the OG Epic, so it seems that they're really behind this one.

That's because this phone is available for all major carriers. The Epic was only for Sprint thus Samsung relied on Sprint to advertise who decided to push the Evo instead.

"Reunions" like these make me miss the good ol' OG Epic threads...and the horribly timed updates
Having it ship with Éclair and not getting Froyo until half a year later. Then waiting for GB another 8 months...
*back on topic*
Sammy and the carriers (well atleast Sprint) have really come along way since...To be honest, they surprised me with the JB update. I hope they continue stride with 4.1.2 and/or 4.2 soon

What was the wifi bug? Just curious because I've never run into issues with wifi.
