What is up with nexus q? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

What is the big deal and price tag?
...

- Streaming Multimedia PC with a Nexus Tag (developer device?!)
- "Social Media"
- awesome looks
- general "hackability"
- $299

I agree, it is a bit of a rip-off in my opinion. It should be roughly half that price. I'd be willing to pay $150-$180 for it. At $300 you can buy a PS3, xbox360 w/ kinect, a Nexus 7 tablet, build a DIY PC and run it as a HTPC, and a slew of other things. $300 is just plainly too much for what it is - but it's made in the good ol USA!

EXACTLY.
How cares that it's made in USA? it doesn't justify the price tag.

Chinese Fender = 400$
US standard = 1500$
America simply costs more in just about everything

You still need speakers too...
I still think a Sonos system trumps Nexus Q
http://www.sonos.com/

This is ultimately cheaper than buying an AirPlay-compatible A/V receiver and trashing your existing receiver. Also, it's its own Android device, which means in the future you'll probably be able to mod it into a Google TV set top box, and even use it as a gaming device since it has the same GPU as the Galaxy Nexus.
Did you guys even read the specs?

I do. a couple hundred dollars to know that I am feeding my own country's economy versus that of another country is a fair price to pay.

It should have been an Android / Google TV device by itself. Maybe they'll announce some weird integration with Google TV tomorrow. (Tomorrow is keynote 2, don't forget!)

Well i see the the basics and lackluster specs. It basically seems to be a gnex under the hood so if it includes the iva video chips and ti sound chip, even with the par gpu it should be capable. Mostly. Just trying to figure out what it is. Is it.supposed to be a multimedia device where you supply the screen and bumps? I have a ps3, laptop, galaxy nexus and a galaxy tab 7 2 to handle those duties. Albeit my tab is collecting dust. Anybody want to get a great price on a tab? It is rooted.
...

I guess we'll have to wait an see what comes out of the "general hackability" of it. There's no way in hell I'm spending that much just so I can buy all my media from the Play Store. For under $100 I got a Roku and for $3 I got an app that let's me stream video, music, or pics from my phone to the Roku. As for the jukebox functions I can already do that with Subsonic and my PC.
EDIT: And with Subsonic I can also allow my friends with Android devices to choose songs.

well i hope enough xda people buy it and get smacking on it and share their experience. kinda curious still as to how this will change the living room.

hey and did anybody notice that one of the accessories for the nexus q are $400 pair of bookshelf speakers?

Part of the expense is the high quality amplifier in it. I however agree that it better do way more than just stream from the play store with my phone or tablet as a controller to justify a 300 dollar price tag. BUT DAMN IT IS SEXY

It's a $300 bowling ball that will play music and videos from the Google Play store only... but you need your own speakers and TV for it as well.
Yeah, not really sure where they're going with this one.
If it was a proper home media server that allowed you to stream off your Nexus 7 or GNex phone (or your home PC)... then yeah. 300 would be a nice price for the integration.
It has shiny lights and visualizers though!

[Q] Football season is here

I will be away from my television quite a bit this season, and want to know how I can watch some football on the evo. Minus the obvious slingbox, how do you stream live tv to your phone?
Capture card on desktop, VLC as a streaming server. LogMeIn Ignition for controls. Ta-da.
Slingbox. You can control your cable box and watch anything from anywhere. Its what I use when I'm on the road. I highly recommend it.

Yeah but the slingbox will last you years and years without any additional cost. It's a one time fee. You can also watch on your laptop if you have one.
Just set up a slingbox pro hd and couldn't be happier.

Definitely couldnt talk the wife into letting me get the pro since its what 300 dollars. Also, dont really see a need for the HD one since it will mostly be watched on my phone.
I actually found the solo version on Newegg for 156, so I might be picking that up.
Orb is your friend....tv tuner card and access to your mp3 and video collection from one mobile interface. There is an ORB android app but there is no need for it, the web browser works great. Orb has built a nice interface that will scale to multiple mobile codecs. I have been using it for awhile...first had it running for my old nextel blueberry...
yeah but w/out the nfl sunday ticket you can watch 1 or 2 games. with nfl sunday ticket 2-go you can watch any game.
http://www.directv.com/DTVAPP/content/sports/nfl_online_mobile
Tuner card in your PC is the least expensive. I typically use that with Orb but I haven't tried it on the Evo yet. Basically the Slingbox is doing the same thing for more money. It's a capture card and media web streaming device. Basically you can spend $100 on the capture card or $200 on the Sling. It's up to you depending on budget and whether you feel like setting it all up.
you can easily get a slingbox on craigslist used for very cheap, $50 or less easily and its far and away better than any other option suggested unless you get the sunday ticket package.

why didnt google just combine nexus q with google tv

What the point of having two seperate devices. I really want to get the new Google TV set box and I've been wanting to be able to stream from my tablet and phone directly to the TV for a while now. Why not just either add Google TV to the q or add the q functions to Google TV. Now I'm going to have to get the Sony Google TV set box and nexus q.
Also, side questions. Does anyone know if you can stream movies on the phone/tablet to the nexus q if its stored on the device and not Google play?
Google is going after Sonos it seems. However, the Q is strange (requires a Android phone/tablet to control it) and over priced. I really don't see a huge market for it unless they drop the price by a few hundred dollars.
Aye, for that much cash, I'd have thought it'd have more GoogleTV like features, unless this is just a Trojan Horse into the living room and those things can be added later (though without an hdmi input, that'll be interesting to see how).
No, I admit, I just don't 'get it' as a device when a GTv will do the same stuff, plus more, just without the amp. There's something missing in all this it feels like.
That's kinda what I meant, but didn't say. $300 to just stream video and music from play store is kinda stupid. $300 for Google TV that can do it= awesome
$300
Running on Galaxy Nexus hardware.
Only streams YouTube, Google Play Videos/Music.
Runs 'Android' but seems to have no real use beyond the line immediately above this one.
According to the data we have so far (that above), the Nexus Q seems to me to be a failure of Google to have any real vision if they intend to get into our living rooms. Honestly? No applications, no Netflix, nothing. Just YouTube and Google Play music/videos? That's pathetic. For $300? That's not just pathetic, that's an insult.
That is, unless Google is hiding more functionality in their sleeve. Which, if they have any intelligence at all (which we know they do), they most certainly haven't shown everything they intend to do with it yet. Although I could be wrong...give me this great looking device running on solid hardware and the full functionality of Android on my TV with my phone/tablet as a remote? Yeah, I'll spend $300 on it. Leave it as displayed so far? No thanks.
No Hulu, no Netflix, no local steaming. No buyers.
The reason for the price being $299 is due to it being 100% made in the US.

kudos for making the device here. now all they need to do is make it a device I would want in the first place.
if the thing turns out to be less locked-down and more hackable than the google tv products, then I can see some serious potential.

Tell that to Sonos. Unfortunately, this is a high end market and I'm not sure how it can work given it requires a Android ecosystem.
I agree with what everyone else has said. It'd be a hard sell to make since it doesn't (as of now) have any support for third parties such as Netflix and Pandora. However, Google has encouraged "hacking" the device... so maybe they will leave such capabilities to people such as XDA devs to really put this device to use? Kind of a stretch, but it could add utility to the device without Google having to officially sign on board with third parties?
I appreciate this is manufactured here in the US but boy oh boy.
I would really like to see my Logitech Revue get revamped, even though I only paid $120 for it at Best Buy to get that and the camera I would like to see it get some updates in features. (cough cough SKYPE support)
This thing though, I could see it being nice to have on your desk or something? I don't get the connecting it to a TV thing unless you plan on using a home theater system.
We'll wait and see.
but that thing in the video where all the people are in the kitchen talking and everyones picking songs for the Nexus Q to play, that would just be irritating. No don't touch it, you can look at it. Don't change my song please. Leave it the fck alone.
I bet it's going to be a hacker's delight. If it was priced a little more sensibly, I would have bought it.
What if this turns into the next generation GoogleTV by developers? Imagine running latest version of CM on your TV? Now, that $300 isn't looking so bad after all.
You better belive some developers are drooling over this great hardware. Cyanogen said so himself on G+. Let's wait and see......

So what I could gather from the press conference is that it's a galaxy nexus without the screen, cell capability, storage space... but a proper hdmi output and usb...
maybe if it could be hacked to run an operating system off a thumb drive? I love Google tv but the hardware is so slow and low on memory... I dunno, but the "to make it open to general hackability" statement does show promise.

Anyone purchased Nexus 7?

I know this is a galaxy nexus forum. I am curious to those who owns both galaxy nexus and 7.
I held my purchase thinking it is a blown up and faster galaxy nexus. iPad seemed easier to justify compare to iPhone due to 6 inches of screen difference. 4.7" vs 7"? It wasn't too logical.
However, I wish to have bigger screen to browse web and do some research comfortably in my bed or on my couch.
Are you happy to own both devices or feel like it was a redundant purchase?
Thanks for your inputs.

Yeah between my MBP and GN I can get the most done. Its just pain to howl around 15" MBP to do some tasks that a tablet can do.

Same here. I have a Samsung Series 9 laptop and a GNexus phone, so there is really no point in purchasing a Nexus 7. I would like to have one, but there isn't anything I could do on a Nexus 7 that I can't currently do on my sweet phone or insanely thin and light laptop. If I had a ton of money sitting around, I would probably get one. As a broke law school student, the $200+ can be spent better elsewhere.

When did you order?? I didn't get any shipping notification yet.
No Regrets
Yes, mine should arrive tomorrow. I've been debating whether or not to get a 7 inch tablet for the past year or so, with consideration of getting a 10 incher. Once I got my Galaxy Nexus (a couple months ago), I didn't think I'd be diving into tablet territory any time soon. The price and the specs were really appealing to me so I went ahead and pre-ordered the Nexus 7.
I use the Torque app with an OBDII bluetooth transmitter to monitor information from my car. It turns out there is a perfect spot open to mount a 7 inch tablet in front of my information center on my 09 Honda Accord. This is probably one of the things I'm looking forward to most.
I've also bought a bunch of apps when they were on sale. I go through so many ROMs on my GNex and not all of my apps/games (Shadogun, Deadspace, etc) will run on my phone. This is another thing I'm looking forward to, all of the new apps and games I'll be able to use and play.
I have two friends that own Tegra 3 tablets. One has the TF300T and the other has the Prime. They seemed a little too large for my liking, but the appeal of having a device that's not always connected, therefore reducing battery drain, was a big plus for me. The added functionality of all the tablet apps is also welcomed.
For the price, you can't beat it. I doubt I'll have any regrets with the purchase.
I'm kind of with Steve Jobs on this one, the 7 inch form factor is in too much of a grey area to be worth it. Too small to be big, to big to be small.
That said, $199 is a stupidly good price.

Same here. Makes me want to cancel the order and buy at a store to avoid the $20 shipping fees.
I thought the $25 credit would only be available when ordered from the Play store.
On a side note. I picked up the N7 because I want to use it with custom firmwares and kernels.
I can't stand it if my Gnex would crash or drop calls due to a custom kernel or rom. I had that happen too many times on my old Nexus S, when there was the mute bug on some roms, you answer the phone and the other person was muted until you toggled the mute button.
Personally, I can't justify it. I already have a GNex and the Nexus 7 just seems like a slightly bigger GNex. That doesn't mean it's not a good tablet though.

NBA Game Time/League Pass Working Thru MHL Adapter

The new NBA Game Time app from sprint is actually working on androids this year, and amazingly, so is the league pass. I'm on the league pass free trial right now but thinking about purchasing the full league pass if I can get the video to show to my TV through the MHL adapter that they sell for the SGS3's. Anyone have experience or can confirm that this will work? Would be much appreciated!
Watching it as well at home and on the phone I'm buying the cable and league pass. Let me know If you get a cable before I do and how good it looks.

Lol this is funny I was just gonna start a thread about League pass. It's free for a bit but it's only 39.99 for the whole season (Sprint customers get 20% off)
So far I'm pretty impressed with the quality. For only 40 bucks you get the entire season. Wish it included playoffs but still. 80 games left this season so that's not too bad
Hope the NFL takes note and offers Sprint some live games, now that would be awesome

It was a hell of a deal, much better than most of us who have them got it for. You're asking us to tell you, after the fact, if it was wise? That's between you, your use cases, and your money. You should always know what you're buying, whather it costs $2 or $200...
With that said, if your use cases are anything close to what the tablet is good at, yeah, that's a hell of a steal.

Plus you can get USB hard drives quite cheaply now, especially with the money you have saved on the surface in the first place. Stick movies on there for long term storage.
You will probably want the microSD anyway though, 32gb on a windows machine is very little. You can use 64gb microSD's in it I think, or just use 32 or less I guess.

Buying what?
You might want to be more detailed for those of us reading on tapatalk...
I bought mine in the uk last weekend for £319 with touch cover, I knew exactly what I was buying, as I hate the ipad and have grown to detest android, even after having and hacking a dell streak, Motorola droid etc. I also used ios for years with jailbreak and in the week I have had the surface I have to say am very happy. if I had bought at $199 I would be singing from the roof tops as that's a steal. it is a tablet that divides opinion, because the world, cant see how not having to sync to the bloody terrible iTunes is a good thing. tonight I have rearranged the music on the usb stick, I use in my lexus, written a couple of lengthy emails with attachments, reviewed a couple hotels, and created half a power point presentation all from my tablet.
I can honestly say that the only thing I am missing from ios and android is bad piggies and I am pretty sure that Google and apple fanboys would say that's cause there app stores are better, they maybe but they make up or stale hardware.
