After some frustrating failures with romdump v72 I could extract a romdump out of my Motorola Defy Plus MB526 (carrier Vodafone-Italy) with v82b.
Here is the result:

How can I make a recovery out of those files?

I don't really know what you're doing here but can't you just do a nandroid backup from CWM recovery?

I think that he want's to dump his official stock rom before modifying his defy. So i guess he has not got 2nd-init or CWM or CM7, (or probably even root?)

Almost perfect ;-) I did root to enable Titanium Backup. Next step is having a firmware backup and then finding a CWM recovery that works on Defy+
Edit: you can not romdump without rooting.
Update: I wiped all data from the phone, rooted again, made a "clean" romdump, installed the recovery, and made a backup from there (I suppose it is a nandroid backup).
Now I will restore all data, backup again and study CM installation.

Did you use ADB, or terminal to install/start it?

As on romdump page is only stated:
Once the program has finished you should find a directory in the root of your SD card called romdump and a sub-directory named after your device model. Take those files and give them to someone who knows how to make a recovery zip

2ndInit
I had no problems in making the image with romdump v82b but I had no clue on how to restore.
So I parked it and went for 2nd init + nandroid. I restored twice and works like a charme.
The only little issue is that if you install bootmenu 0.6.1 it installs an old recovery which makes a single backup image and if you restore that you always get the old recovery, even if you had a recent one e.g. by flashing CM7.

i hv alrdy tried installing SndInitDefy.apk v2.0 from d given thread..but no use..when i reboot in recovery mode i get error logo (android with ! sign in triangle)...

Dude, that's not an error, that's what's meant to happen when you boot in to recovery mode. When you get that logo, press vol+ and vol- at the same time and you will get the stock recovery menu.

I have kind of a serious issue right now. I used Touch Recovery 5.8.0.2 and made a full backup today of my whole ROM (2.5GB) before trying out some mods which eventually didn't work. So I decided to wipe and restore the backup I made. No matter what I do I cannot get it to restore my data partition properly. I keep getting "Error while restoring /data!" message, however it does the boot image and system fine but doesn't continue to cache and sd-ext because of the failed data. Whenever I boot it up, some of my apps are missing from the home screen and practically all of them are not working when I launch them (force close). I also get boot up error of Google+ force close, among a bunch of other issues. This is happening even when I try to restore an older backup as well. My device is not working state right now and although I can just restore the stock images to get it working again, it is urgent that I restore my data ASAP! I tried wiping several times and even using the non-touch 5.5.0.4 recovery to restore and same thing keeps happening.
Any help would be highly appreciated!
Please don't tell me my backup is corrupt
Update 1: Eventually I gave up and started from scratch but I have confirmed already this happened on a fresh backup as well, at this time we are trying to figure out what is causing this so I can go back to safely backing up and restoring backups.
Update 2: We have test builds of TWRP Recovery that may have resolved this issue! We need testers!

My phone did fine yesterday, I was running AOPK Milestone 3 with FAUX123 kernel.
But when I woke up, my phone looked like it's battery was emtpy.
- When I plugged the phone with the charger, I started the phone again.
- Unfortunately my phone keep looping at the Google screen over and over.
So I pulled the battery and put the battery back again in the phone.
- I went to the bootloader and went to CWM recovery.
Deleted Data, Cache and Dalvike cache.
- Tried to retrieve my backup rom, but keep getting this "Error while restoring /data!" message.
I've tried to install other roms as well, but I still keep getting the bootloop at the Google screen.
Have you guys have any advice for me?

For me, no, no (CWM Touch 5.8.0.2), yes (stock rooted 4.0.4), no but my goal is to restore my data not erase it.
I had this happen to me before, what I did was flash a factory image through fast boot and it was fine after.

Thanks guys..I flashed the factory image through Fastboot mode and the phone works perfectly again! Too bad I lost all my data, but I'm happier that I have my phone fully functional again

I did copy it. I have full access to the file. Also, just fyi my goal here is not just to get to working state (I'm aware of the stock images) but to actually recover my data. My phone is currently on stock images completely blank and working now.
Fast boot flash the nand images just like u did the stock ones.

Nanadroid files can be flashed in fastboot? Are you sure? First time I'm hearing this. Doesn't fastboot need .img files? These are .tar files.
Open it up and see if its image...sorry all my recoveries use images.

I guess it depends on the recovery version you use. I remember older versions actually had .img files. However 5.5.0.4 and Touch 5.8.0.2 both have ext4.tar files.
Which version of recovery do you use?
If you have root, you can restore your data partition using Titanium Backup. Use "Export from Nandroid Backup" within TB, select the nandroid backup and then select all apps that you want to restore

Yes. Titanium Backup can restore all your system apps as well as downloaded apps from a nandroid backup. Not as clean as a nandroid restore from CWM but essentially the same thing. But try to see if Titanium Backup can extract your nandroid backup. It all depends on what exactly went wrong with your nandroid backup to begin with. I don't think it restores cache. So not sure about wallpaper.

You're right. This works great for restore data to select apps (got my notes and game saves back). I think the icon layout is held in the launcher settings, I'm about to try and restore the data to the launcher app and see what happens. I'm making a CWM backup of first of my current state (that's assuming this backup will actually work).
EDIT: Yes! That did it! Widgets position weren't saved but it's ok I only had a few so I manually put them back. Thank you! I never knew TB had the ability to work with nandroid backups.
I guess this now just leaves me figuring out what went wrong with the CWM backup. It happened twice (I have two backups from the same day that won't restore). Does anyone else use CWM Touch 5.8.0.2 and have successful backups? I would experiment to see if it works now but I don't want to end up with a corrupt backup and redo everything again.
Yes with me its the same thing my data its corrupt is even worse every time I do a nanobackup and restarted my phone the phone freezes on the boot logo and I have to go back to recovery trying to use my backups but I can't so I have to flash a new from again and start from the beginning again!!!! Anybody here has the same experience with that ???
So AGAIN, I'm having the same issue. This time on a recovery 5.5.0.4 that used to work for me when I originally got my phone. I think either my data partition might be too big or something but this really needs to fixed pronto. Anyone know how to contact Koush directly in regards to this matter?

Whenever i try to restore my Backup i end up in bootloop, sometines its restored but somethings are not working like no service, some widgets are Gone, cant get into Phone settings as the setting button is completly gone from phone.

yes....not change the name of backup...
moreover if you have flashed a zip and it didn't go fine....there is a possibility that the istallation have spoiled the backup or file of kernel...(for all I know it happened to me in this way)
Yes Guys i do make a full wipe before restore, and after making a backup i transfer it to pc for Safe storage, so whenever i need it i transfer it back to cloclworkmod folder

If u flash custom kernel, u need to also flash wifi modules before rebooting after restore...
I dont Flash custom Kernel, everything is stock, by the way My Arc is Bootlocked so customs kernels
While you make backup does cwm show any errors? have you checked the log ? Does the restore process complete without errors ? And do you fix permissions and mount system /data etc before restoring ?

This is what is happening to me. Lets say am Running on GB Rom e.g X-Gamer, now i want to try lets say Optimax Rom, i backup my Current ROM which is X-Gamer, then i try to restore it to see if its works, and i find that it works. so Flash ICS Original Sony ROM and root it. in the end i Have Sony Stock ROM.587 and CWM installed. So far am ok.
Now i Install ICS based ROM like Optimax or JellySandwhich. Everything goes Fine, so i Backup That ROM too and keep a copy on my Laptop. Now i decide to go to my old backup of X-Gamer, i Boot to recovery do a full wipe + i mount data/system and fix permission as i have CWM 5.5.0.4. which has permission option in it. i continue to restore my X-Gamer Backup. After Finnishing of course without error. i reboot the phone and Bam!!. Bootloop.
I reflash GB.42 with Flashtool, root it and install CWM. Boot to recovery and try to restore my X-Gamer backup, and WOLA!! it's restored.
same with ICS Backup. Reflash Stcok Rom root it and restore the ICS backup i made, and it works.
As i know i may be wrong (am a noob) The backup is a snapshot of the rom, so regardless of what rom someone is running when he restores the Backup, he should be back to that ROM in the backup and not to reflash first the corresponding Stock ROM in order for the Backup to work.

Have you used the same recovery all the time? Switching recoveries can "sometimes" not flash backups properly. Either that or it didn't back it up properly in the first place. TBH there's not much we can can do. The backup is corrupted and for that it is causing bootloops and braking things. All I can suggest to you is to reinstall a fresh install of the ROM and then try an advanced restore of your applications and data just not the Boot.img or the system.img

I have tried to use same recovery, but same result. restoring backup across different ROM does not work for me it seems. I have to have a working corresponding rom as the backup am trying to Resotre. for example if i want to restore my backup of GB ROM, i have to have a working GB Rom already on Phone. I Can't restore an ICS Rom while my Phone is On GB and vice verser.

Flashing an ftf also flashes the kernel, so restoring a GB backup when you originally installed ICS or vice versa will give you issues as CWM doesn't backup your kernel.

Thanks XperienceD for Clarifying. now i undersatnd. Just wanted to ask is it possible to flash A GB Sock Kernel on an ICS ROM or vice versa, then using the backup to restore thru CWM, as this will save time than to reflash the ftf, root it and install CWM just only to restore your backup.

This is why it's better to unlock your BL, then it's just a flash of a kernel then restoring your backup.

I'm trying to restore a nandroid backup I did with TWRP 2.3.3.0 but I'm not being successful and it's bothering me because now I have an unstable system and didn't really wanted to reinstall everything from scratch...
I don't understand what I'm doing wrong but after restoring the backup and rebooting the phone, I can boot but MOST of my apps are not "installed". Shortcuts I had on the home screen are there with their respective icons, I click on them and I get "Applications is not installed". I also get a notification saying that phone storage is running low, and it is hitting the 2GB limit, but it never was like this before, I had lots of of free space for apps. Looking at the nandroid backup, it seems I have data.ext4.win000 and data.ext4.win001 both with around 1.5GB, which goes above the 2GB limit. Not sure if this means anything...
Why isn't this backup working and what can I do to attempt to solve it?
Any other info I can give you so you can better try and help me, just let me know what you need to know...

There's no way to get around this is there?
not sure if your recovery is corrupt, maybe worth making a titanium backup of apps and system data, flashing a new rom and then restoring via titanium?

what do you mean titanium backup out of the nandroid? normally the data backup should be there too...to be sure i always make tit backup's for my apps...

The only backup I have is a Nandroid backup and nothing else. I don't even have a running/working ROM at the moment.

Normally the nandroid backup should also save the data which means the apps and their data, hm.....due that it isn't working you have to install from beginning

It's your fault cuz the app data is not being restored , 1stly when you made the backup with TWPR you should've selected to backup the CACHE , you skipped that step since by default TWPR skips that step = no apps data anymore, tho there are shortcuts and in manage all apps you can see those apps installed but with grey collor like when being removed from lets say rom cleaner , theres still the APP IMAGE but not the app it'self , you could try this:
1. Flash old recovery ( the one you used to make the back up 2.3 or which ever you used ) . full wipe , restore nand backup ( don't forget to flash the boot.img in the bootloader if you used different kernel in that time or flash the modules via recovery for the kernel you use atm )
after you boot up re-download those apps that are there with shortcuts but not apps itself and hope for the saves from those apps to be there.
Next time if you don't wanna risk it you titanium back up and save the apps that matter to you , when restoring them back : download the app , go to titanium and restore only the DATA.
or simply check in TWPR when making nand backup to save the CACHE as well in the backup.
Yeah, I know it was my fault... I was at work doing other stuff at the same time and didn't focus on what I was actually doing with my phone and I messed up. I was used to an old recovery on my old phone where a nandroid backup would backup everything needed and didn't really look at the partition options.
I'm doing exactly what you mentioned and so far seems to be working. All the data seems to be there, I just have to reinstall all the apps...
One thing though, since the nandroid restore process didn't work correctly, I was left with a full /data partition and my phone started reporting "low storage" and didn't allow me to do install anything. I looked into the /data partition and found out that the folder lost+found was filling up the partition, I erased everything in it and restored 1.2Gb of free space. I can now install all my apps.

Your rom is ok but i think your sdcard were you install your app has been modified. Just do a factory reset and install apps again it happened to me too).

Flash the recovery from the backup and then try to restore nandroid and if you have empty spce in the name change with _
I have different problem about nandroid back up, everytime i transfer my back up to pc and back again to my phone, the custom recovery cannot detect my back up. What should i do?

Make sure you make no changes in the folder structure and folder naming. It has to be exact the same as it was.......and when you want to restore a nandroid you always flash the boot.img and recovery.img from the nandroid and then do the rest of the procedure

I guess I need some help... I'm on rooted stock and recently had to install busybox (for recovering my accidentally deleted image folder ). Now when I try to install the current OTA update, it says "/system/xbin/nc has unexpected contents" and won't let me install the update. /system/xbin/nc is actually not existing currently (removed all the busybox links, just kept the busybox binary). Don't know if it was there before I installed busybox.
I tried to download and unpack a TWRP nandroid backup of my current software version in an attempt to find and restore any file possibly overwritten by busybox links, but there was no /system/xbin folder in the nandroid backup.
Any ideas how I might be able to install the OTA again? I don't want to flash stock again and backup/restore all my data. There has to be a way! :highfive:

Make a nandroid of your present ROM.
Then flash only the System part of the restore from the stock nandroid.
Only the System portion!
Then see how it goes.

That actually sounds quite smart. I'm going to give it a try tonight. I never knew you could just restore the system part of a nandroid backup. I'll have to figure out how to do that.

That actually sounds quite smart. I'm going to give it a try tonight. I never knew you could just restore the system part of a nandroid backup. I'll have to figure out how to do that.

Under Advanced, you can restore just that portion and it'll be fixed to flash the OTA without touching any data.
