Just brought a Gnex - what accessories do I need? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Hi all,
I have just brought a galaxy nexus and wondered what accessories people recommend?
I'm mainly looking for a case for protection and screen protectors.
Had a look round but hard to tell what fit quality gonna be like so thought would ask the people in the know
Also are the earphones decent enough?
Cheers
Andy

If you have the GSM version I recommend the OEM Extended Battery and the CaseMate POP case.
You can find the battery at:
Expansy's
or
NegriElectronics
You can find the case in white at Sprint stores and they fit with the extended battery installed

Buy the extended off eBay. Its OEM and cheaper

I remember the casemate having design flaws like a missing hole for the secondary microphone and the charging port being too small. Still true?

Both issues have been fixed. They added the noise cancellation hole and made the charging port opening bigger a while back.

Well, the ones from Expansys and Negrielectronics are OEM as well and the cheapest ones on Ebay were only a couple dollars cheaper than Expansys.
Also, the ones on Ebay are all overseas, meaning they could take anywhere between 2-3 weeks to ship.

Zagg invisishield. Its the best screen protector out there. It comes with a lifetime warranty and they'll put it on for you at BB.

I use spare batteries like the stock one instead of the extended batt. (Didn't like the feel with the extended and I hate being tethered to a power socket to charge, so I need at least 2 batteries anyway).
Grabbed 2 spare batteries and a battery charger on e-bay for $10, now I never charge my phone via cable and haven't yet had my phone die on me without a fully charged spare ready.
I went with the Ultra Hybrid SGP Case in black. It's got a thin profile but is strong too, has all the right holes (except pogo pin holes), fits really well and feels good in the hand. Despite many accidental drops there's no damage on phone or case. I like the lip on the screen side and the way the buttons stick out a bit making them a little easier to press, I believe there's a review somewhere around here.
Still looking for a good screen protector, just using a crap one I got for free atm.

Is the battery performance that bad? (After initial playing wouldn't say I am going to be a power user)
How much extra will extended battery give me?
Thanks everyone for comments so far

Decided to purchase this case from your little "review" and after seeing it online. Can't beat the price for $26 shipped :cyclops:

I use the Diztronic case. It doesn't cost much and it looks really nice. 10 dollars on Amazon

If you are in the UK just listed some accessories for sale.

For a case I use CruzerLite. If you like a wet applied screen protector Ghost Armor, dry I use the 3 pack clear ones from Verizon.

I'm waiting for mine...
Do I really need a screen protector? Is the screen easily scratched? I am thinking about getting a sleeve, instead of a screen protector and case. I missed the old days with G1's pouch, needless to say.

Definitely a case, and screen protector. Like all devices, you have a chance of making it fall or something.

How do I make sure I get the updated version of the case, and not the older one?

I would say screen protector is a must since the gnex has no gorilla glass and scratches easily. Other than that a case is recommended but i leave my nexus without a case at most the battery cover falls out it's no big deal. But if you are careless a case would be good
oh and the extended battery from Samsung since the screen takes up a lot of batt if you are a heavy user
the diztronic case is good and the SGP screen protectors. Certain cases don't support extended batt though but the Diztronic does

I am going on a camping trip of three days, my question is do you guys recommend batteries or one of those portable power stations? like this one http://www.amazon.com/Anker-10000mA...4&sr=8-1&keywords=portable+power+supply+anker

No one should be carrying the "old" version any more, CaseMate recalled all of them. Just make sure you buy from a reputable seller, or directly from CaseMate themselves. You can also check to make sure wherever you get it that they updated their product images to show that the "cancellation mic" opening is visible.

Cheap cover from Amazon

Just received a cheap cover from Amazon and very impressed. perfect fit. gaps where gaps are needed. all for a couple of quid !
www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0062M08W0
you can get 5 of them on ebay for about £7 in 5 different colours.

never sure if these all come from the same factory or whether everyone just makes lookalikes....
Just pointing out that this stockist has cases that actually fit. cant vouch for any other suppliers.
(and im in no way linked to the vendor !)

Thanks! ordered one until I can get something better (although it really doesn't look bad, especially for £3!!!)
Ordered! There are many similar cases on the internet but I bought this because this case fits perfectly.
Thanks!
Got one of these for a couple of quid off ebay and was pleasantly surprised. Wish it didn't have the shiny bits on it but it's a good case, fits perfectly.

Got the same case from same seller as the OP.
For a temp case it's bang on. Fits fine. Not too ugly. Dead cheap. £1.89 total price paid, shipped same day in a plain small jiffy bag.
Don't think there are any premium options at this stage either. The Casemate gear advertised on MobileFun and Expansys isn't in yet.
Now about an official charging dock and car mount...

I am using exactly the sam case, it seems to be of decent enough quality. All the right holes in right places and right size. Like you say it fits absolutely perfect. I particuly like the bits over the power and volume buttons and the texture for extra grip. This case is an absolute bargain costing me less than £2

Got the same case as op bought off ebay all of the cases looked exactly the same.
why are all these cases making access holes for the dock connectors, when if you have a case on your phone, it will no longer sit in the dock?
I got this case in the post today and it fits perfectly.
Not too shabby for a temp case. Definately makes the phone easier to hold. Doesnt feel like its gonna slip out my hand anymore!
Think I am going to have to get a few.
Another positive experience here. Mine arrived today. Phone feels so much more solid in the hand. Thanks for the tip.
mine arrived today. Used link from the OP. Well pleased with the fit and look of the case for the price. The added grip is also MUCH appreciated!
Thanks again to the OP.

I guess there could be third-party docks that can fit the GN with a case on. Just need to make the fit loose enough and have long pogo pins.
Ive got the same case too and can confirm its a great fit and will do me until a proper good case comes out.
Quick update ... a few days in (and several times taken off and put back) and it hasnt stretched or warped at all ! very impreesive for the money
ive bought cheap covers before and usually regretted it but this ones a keeper

The quality of the plastic is superior. Once I bought one for my Galaxy Nexus I've got one for every phone since then. They are the best TPU brand for phones.
You won't regret it. It's cheap too!
My SII Skyrocket Diztronic case ended up being my favorite of the various cases I tried.
Not at all flashy. Nothing special about it.
It just "works" properly. And doesn't get beat up like cheaper cases do.
And I like that they are finally doing cutouts for BOTH the volume & power unlike on my last case.
I hate anything covering the power or volume buttons. Though some folks do like that.
I've used these cases for 2 years on Captivate, Infuse, Galaxy Nexus and Note. They're grippy, durable and fit perfectly. I just ordered one for my S3. Thanks for the heads-up.

Sorry for the delay in getting our S III cases up guys, I was out of town and had an employee put them up. Unfortunately she accidentally set the start selling date as July 6th so the pages never went live. I said didn't you realize we weren't getting any orders?! We sent inventory to Amazon on Friday so Prime shipping options should be available either Tuesday or Wednesday.
We did include a screen protector with this release made of Japanese film. When we first started including screen protectors we were using a Korean film, which is slightly better than Chinese but still had some rainbowing and purpling. These Japanese based ones are great, very good clarity. Even though including them almost doubles our costs we've kept our prices the same for the time being. Thanks everyone for your continued support!

The company resides and manufactures in America (Madison, WI, near me!!). The customer service is absolutely OUTSTANDING. You basically end up talking to a real person who is dead set on making sure you're satisfied.
And TPU, in general, is perfect for me. Thin, adds a little grip but doesn't stick in pockets.

cldn't agree more, they are indeed bad. Just ordered Diztronic for my S III . Loved it on my Nexus , was waiting for a week for it to be available in the meanwhile i thought i would try cruzerlite . Apart from the fit, i dint like the looks of it too, esp that i wanted something with a plain back matte finish . Diztronic was the perfect fit . Love it Love it!!!
Actually they are in Madison, but my EVO 4G LTE Diz TPU's specifically stated Manufactured in China.
I put them in a bowl of water and they don't sink so I'd guess they aren't full of lead.
The water did turn green and looked like antifreeze though (just kidding!)

We are in Madison, WI but unfortunately we have our cases made in China for the time being. I'm looking at potentially having them made in Akron, OH but it's not set in stone at this point. If anyone has any contacts with US based factories that can manufacturer TPU cases feel free to contact me. For now we are using the same lingo everyone else uses, "Designed in ___ Manufactured in China". Our screen protectors however are manufactured in Japan. Some of you should be receiving your GS III cases today, I know at least one XDA member received theirs on Saturday as they were in Wisconsin. I'm looking forward to seeing some feedback as my GS III from Sprint hasn't arrived yet!

It doesn't have a cutout for the camera, as in my opinion I'd rather have it covered so it's protected. If someone can show me an example of diminished picture quality because of it I may be swayed to make a cutout for it in the future. As far as going all the way to the edge of the glass, from what I understand it's not possible to do so on the GS III because of the way the glass tapers on the edges, so we made the screen protector in the same way as our One X screen protector. It essentially covers the flat part of the glass. You could probably go all the way to the edge with a wet adhesive based screen protector, but with a static type screen protector they would just peel up.

I see where you're coming from, I'm mostly interested on buying a good tempered glass screen protector. That being said, the most I would pay is $40 US and a decent $10 case.
I like it!
I also like the looks of this case, but I have no experience with this brand. I'm a long time Otterbox user and have absolutely enjoyed peace of mind with a rugged or semi-rugged case on my smartphones in the past. I just ordered my N5 and I'm really looking forward to it as it will be my first Nexus devise but I knew that my accessory options would be limited for awhile. If a decent rugged case does hit the market I'll be all over it though. I tend to use my phones for three to four years so the investment of a high end case is well worth while in the long run. That being said...to each their own...some people are a lot more careful and don't need to worry about everyday drops and fumbles but I'm a frequent dropper.
If element does come out with a case I will probably buy the fake version for 25% of the price tbh haha.
I don't think you'll ever see a "high end" case like that for the nexus phones/tabets since there simply isn't enough demand for the phone/case. Meaning the manufacture(s) simply aren't interested.
For all the millions of accessories out there for the iphone/galaxy series, the nexus line only gets a few accessories in comparison. Couple of bumpers and a few cases of which a lot go by the same design. Nothing to "high profile" or anything.
Dang. That is a sweet looking case!

Case is there to protect your phone. If you want to spend that much on a case just leave your phone unprotected. Buy a new one with the same money...
The Spigen Neo Hybrid Case and the Spigen Case Slim Armor are really high-end cases.
I've purchased them via Amazon together with the Spigen GLAStR Screen Protector and they look and feel much more high-grade than other cases like the Cruzerlite or the Ringke Fusion.
The Neo Hybrid fits extremely well and the screen protector is awesome.
It's much more smoother than the Gorilla Glass 3 and swiping and touching is just a dream.
Give them a shot if you search a high quality case.

Yep the hybrid case is great! It looks nice the power and volume buttons work flawlessly. My only gripe is the headphone hole. It won't work well for fat plugs like computer speaker plug for example. But since I don't use it that often it isn't too bad.

I've purchased "Pressy - The almighty button" and I think I can't use it with the Hybrid case.
I have the Neo and rate it as simply ok. It will keep the phone from getting scratched and doesn't look cheap and you have the feeling the phone may survive a drop. Or not. And yes, it is more slippery than the bare phone with a poor feel in hand. I also have the Seidio Dilex which is a little better looking and more likely to get your phone through a drop. That one has good feel in hand. There is still some hope that Casemate will come out with a tough case which I would buy in a heartbeat. Easily the best of any of the cases mentioned here all of which I've had in the past.
Spigen has the better looking cases out right now .I'm sure in time their will be more !!

Heads-up, Otterbox defender.. $47+tax

I wanted to give everyone a heads-up.. Just scored an Otterbox Defender for my Note 10.1 (2014) just over $51 otd
Walmart.com search for item 77-40507 priced at $47.17 (can't post outside link yet)
Several of my local stores (south Alabama) currently have a rack full in stock, maybe your local store does as well...
Make sure to buy online and deliver to store, as they are $89+ on the shelf and Walmart doesn't pricematch Walmart.com.
Awesome case, a bit heavy, but top-notch construction.

I am fond of slim cases as well, but I carry my Note with me daily at work so the extra protection is a decent trade-off, not to mention having something to 'grip'. I don't swap out SD cards, so the slot being covered is not an issue for me. When I need to move a bunch of files, I just plug into my desktop or use and OTG cable with a flash drive.
After a couple days of use, I can say that the Otterbox is exactly what I hoped it would be and am very happy with my purchase. I would not be a buyer at $90 because I can't justify paying 25% of the cost of my refurb tablet, but at $50.. I was all over it.
I was using a Roocase dual view leather case, and it is very nice for a book cover/stand style case, not exactly light, but sturdy and protective. I bought it as my second choice until the Otterbox became available.
Thanks for the heads-up on the SD slot, I know there are folks out there that swap cards.
NOTE: My one concern before I purchases was the built-in screen protector... Totally not an issue, you hardly know it is there, and the screen is still bright, beautiful, and sensitive. Writing feels different... the bare screen is very slick feeling, the Otterbox screen has much more friction.. I read somewhere that someone said it will eventually smooth out and settle somewhere in between, and that would be perfect.
Great find.
Thanks. I got the case and I love it.
ummm the walmart site says this case is, "for Samsung Galaxy Tab PRO 10.1" ... that is not the 2014 Edition.
y'all are saying it fits the 2014 Edition perfect though huh?
Rest assured
I got mine few days ago and it is perfect fit for note 10.1 2014 ed.
All ports line up correctly and also has s-pen slot.
It will work with tampered glasses but I took the built in screen protector from the case off as I didn't like the rainbow effect it created.
I hope it helped.

Not at all.
Just press it firmly at the corner in ward and it will start come apart.
I did, however, use bit of rubbing alcohol to make sure all adhesive are completely removed (just my OCD kicking in lol) to make sure there aren't any residue sticking to the glass.
I checked after a week of use and there weren't any residues

I can also confirm that this case works beautifully. I liked tempered glass so I did remove the original screen protector. Very easy to do. Used Goo-Gone to remove remaining adhesive.
The price at Walmart is down to $39.99. Now the package sticker in the front does say "Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro(10.1) AND Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Edition". It is fully compatible. Love the protection!!!! :victory:
Is it still easy to use?
Too bad they didn't make a commuter case for the Note 10.1 2014... This Defender seems a tad large. I feel like the wife is not going to like it...
It really isn't that bad, just adds weight

Haha you're right! I got it and we both love it actually. Not afraid to "use" the tablet in it.
Amazon is currently showing the black one at $32.50, and a couple of the other colors are less than $17.00.

Just purchased the grey/white model for $20.59, including next day shipping. Description does not state it is for the 2014 version, but several reviews indicate it is. Sweet!
Picked up a Grey and White Defender for $17 on Amazon. I just installed it, it's super bulky but the quality is amazing and the multi use stand is great.
Are the ones from Amazon authentic?

Of so I went from damn I got a good deal to damn it I got ripped off lol
The quality is certainly comparable to other Otterbox cases I have purchased. Looking through the other colors for this case, which were priced higher, I got the impression that grey/white may not be popular and is being phased out. Even if it is a fake Otterbox, which I don't believe it is, the case is still a bargain for $17.

The Grey and White one I received was authentic otterbox. My Note 10.1 is white so it looks great together.
I just ordered one online from Walmart for $39.01 (Amazon also has the same price).
How is this case?

Will review this once I get my hands on it
I have it. Nothing much to review really, it's just your usual generic TPU case.
If you insist on one, a redditor posted this Orzly TPU case review (which I'm almost sure is the same one really, just with a higher price tag):
On a personal note - I quite like it. Fits the device well with ports for everything. Pressing the volume/power button can be a tad harder, but nothing major really. Is quite "grippy"/rough on the back. I also have a tempered glass screen protector (by Orzly) and it seems to cover that up too with almost no buffer left (with less of a "bump"', obviously, between the screen and the top of the case).
In any case, you really can't go wrong with a dollar. You'll surely find something better down the line in a month or so (see the Diztonic case that's coming), but this is good, even if you'll only use it until a better one comes out.

Save your money and get a diztronic case, it'll be out by the end of the week.
Looks very good too. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=53906557&postcount=2

When ordering my device from AliExpress I ordered the TPU case bundled with it, for exactly the reason I mentioned previously - so I have something up until a better case comes along.
I ordered it to the UK, but I'm sure that if you have Amazon or eBay locally you can find a seller that can ship that to quite fast.

I'm planning on getting the Diztronic case as well, don't get it me wrong - it does look great. But again, you can't go wrong with a dollar, I mean, you probably paid more to get to work today than on this case, so even if you served you protection for a couple of hours it's still worth it, time/money-wise.
Thanks for sharing

I wish I could find just one of these that would get to the US in less than a week, everything is from China or UK.
Anyone find any TPU that ships from the US?

Wait for the diztronic case it'll be ready by the end of the week is the estimated date. Keep a eye out on the diztronic thread. It'll cost $10 but is of high quality.

I guess I'll have to. I hate letting my phone go naked for even 2 hours, I may just keep it in the box until I get my hands on the diztronic.
$10 isn't that much considering I spend almost that much on a Chipotle burrito for lunch...

yeah I saw that, looks really nice.
I ordered the $1 TPU just in case too, never hurts to have too many.
Won't get here for 3 weeks, but it's just a dollar...
I saw these tempered glass screenies I think I'll get too (just use some $1 ones till these come in)
http://www.amazon.com/Ebestsale-Pro...8&sr=8-27&keywords=tempered+glass+oneplus+one
3 of them for only $13 shipped is pretty amazing. I wonder if they are any different in quality than the $20 ones, I mean tempered glass is tempered glass, right?

Some are thinner, some have curved sides, and some have better oleophobic coatings.

thinness? not really, curved edges? yes, they feel better and are less likely to chip
