[Q] How to block text messages from unknown # - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

Hey guys,
I've been receiving 2 texts every 5 minutes on my phone since earlier today. Each text says the same garbled message and arrives exactly 5 minutes after the previous pair. I now have over 60 identical text messages.
I called Sprint and says since the originating # is unknown or blocked, there's nothing they can do. Has anyone had a similar experience in the past? Any good advice for me besides changing my phone number?
Thanks 3:

Easiest way is to.......
Use a blacklist Apk, there are several
switch to an MIUI ROM that has a built in blacklist

Garbled how? I would try texting Stop as that usually works for the spam ads.
Hope it helps

This is the message:

When I view the details of the message, it says the phone number texting me is:
""
Therefore, there's no way to block this using an app since there's no # associated with the texts

Me and my son are getting same messages in ohio

Did this come from an App ?
Someone just texted you, either randomly or you gave them your number. Keep in mind many apps can see your phone number, like the Facebook app for example. The Facebook app in some cases actually lets your friends facebook apps, not Android apps but Facebook apps through the Android app, see your number.
Just ignore it. On other carriers I would recommend blocking the number but it really doesn't matter since you have unlimited texting on sprint. You can block numbers easily on sprint and on google voice though, so if it is bothering you just block the number on sprints website or on the google voice site, depending on which you use.

lmao I got one of these a while ago. I got a text bombing app and sent them 1000 texts telling them to f off. havent got another text from them
I just bombed that number for reassurance.

Be sure to add them to your block list as well.
So if I login to sprint I can set call filters?
That Google voice should I set it up?
I thought I didn't need it?
Got a text like this too... Maybe 2 a month. Just found out sprint charged me for one international text. Must be an app causing this. Either way I suggest saving it if you ever receive another, in case sprint wants to charge. Or just bomb the number.

What's the name of the text bombing app lol?

I don't recommend bombing the internatioal one.. That could be kinda spendy.

[Q] SMS/Text Question

Ok so is there any setting I'm missing that will change a SMS that goes over 140 characters to a MMS so the person I'm texting does not receive multiple text.
My wife and I both have SGIII's and when she sends me a long text it breaks it into several text instead of just one long text.
Is there any way to change this?

exuse me but i can't understand you.
could you be more clear?
When you send or receive a text that is longer than 140 characters it is sent or received in multiple messages instead of just one longer message.
Is there a setting that let's you receive messages longer than 140 characters in one text instead of the message being broken into two or three smaller messages?

Try handcent I think that has an option to do that

I would really like to keep using the stock app if possible. Not a big fan of adding apps if I don't need to.
Here is a screenshot of me sending myself a text. You can see it is received in two parts.

as far as i know, CDMA phones can only go up to 160 characters per text.
so that option in handcent is only for the GSM phones which can send longer texts than 160.
so unfortunately you cant change that. now i do know that there are some roms that after so many messages (like 3 or 4 sms in one) it converts it to an MMS rather than an SMS, i don't know if the stock sms app does it, but i know that the handcent app has an option to disable it to rather then sending 3 or 4 sms as an MMS it sends all 4 SMS's.
but thats my 2 cents worth.
It can definitely be done. Are you running stock or do you have a custom ROM?

I was thinking it could be done because I've had that built into almost every ROM I ever ran on Verizon and their network is also CDMA. I just switched to Sprint a few weeks ago so did not know if it was a Sprint thing.
I'm running FreeSG3-v0.0.9.1, if there was a write up somewhere I can decompile whatever needs to be changed and make the changes myself.
I haven't ran stock since I first rooted my OG Droid...

If you're running an AOSP rom, open up the Messaging app and hit the menu button. Go to settings and scroll all the way to the bottom and you'll see it!

Sprint VVM?

I'm getting notifications in the notification bar saying there is an update available for Sprint Visual Voicemail. I go to download the update and no matter what rom I am on there is a package parsing error. How do I fix this?

If you aren't on a stock rom (rooted or unrooted) you will get the parsing error, I learned this the hard way. You could also look for the updated apk for it, but will end up getting texts about new voicemails. Unless you plan on be forced to like handcent good luck on figuring out how to stop the texts.

It's not worth the update... All it does is change the layout of voicemails a little and force a brought background.

True... That would have been smart! Lol
I'm going to downgrade to the old version anyway, because the new version really only makes the solicitation for Sprint transcription larger and more in-your-face. There's not even a button to hide the ad anymore!

What don't you give Google Voice a try for voicemail. It is soo much better IMO.

Actually you don't need to use Handcent to ignore the texts. Just get an app like Super Private Conversation, There are others too I just use that one and have for years because it works. It allows you to block Numbers and send them to a separate call log or delete them all together. The best feature is I can use whatever text App I want.
I did the switch to google ... but I found that if you dont check the settings it sets the reject calls and makes you press 1 too accept the call ... otherwise it goes directly too voice mail and is supposed too act like a call screening feature ... which was driving me nutso ... and I dont remember seeing anything about that setting when setting up the google voice .. the only thing I remember was it said this will erase all your

Google Voice for Voicemail issues
Hey all-
I am running Blazer Rom ICS build on my Samsung, and ever since I update to it I both:
1) keep getting the Sprint Voicemail update notification.
& worse,
2) can't use Google Voice for my voicemail. Google Voice used to lead you through a step-by-step installation process where you could choose it as your voicemail and you dialed a special #. Can you still do this? Does anyone know the # you need to dial?
Thanks,
Mike

SOLVED!!!! S3 Text Message Issues

So I looked through the forums and didn't see the problem I am having. I am using GoSMSPro on my rooted S3 and when I text one of my friends who is using ATT I get her replies from a totally different number. I wasn't sure who it was at first so I texted the number back and a different lady replied saying she didn't text me. Long story short I have already been to a Sprint store with no luck, but now when i text my friend not only are the replies coming in from a different number but my texts to her are showing a number that's not mine. Any ideas as to what is going on?? Thanks in advance.

Re: S3 Text Message Issues
I would suggest going back to unrooted stock jellybean and see if the problem exist.
If it does it's either Sprints problem or a ATT issue.
Does it happen with all numbers or just 1 person?
Sent from a planet far far away.
No only happens with this one number... I text a 215 number and get a reply from a 267 number, I am texting from a 618 number but it shows as a 801 number.....

Did you try using the stock messaging app to see if it's not an app issue? It sounds like a network issue, however
Tried using the stock messaging app this weekend and still got the same weird numbers
Re: S3 Text Message Issues
Try un installing the Gosms app. Then wipe data on your stock messaging app (make sure you use some back up app to save any messages you need to save) then reboot the phone and test it using the stock messaging app. I think this will clear your problem.

Yes the person I am texting is a contact. The random number i get with her reply is not a contact.

Stop spam text messages?

I'm getting a ton of spam text messages sent to my phone. I strictly use Google Voice for messaging and these are being sent to my actual phone number, so without a text message plan I'm being charged for each one of them. Is there a way to stop all of these spam texts?
Call verizon and ask for a text block.

Do not text STOP... they will then know that your number is a legit cell. Just call Verizon, get a credit back for the unwanted texts and get a block.

One of the companies I consult for will take the "Stop" text and add it as a valid mobile number. Your number will then get sold to a marketing company as a premium number. Just ignore it and block.
My bad did not know you were a consultant. Please take Sebastionravens advice

wife's device just started getting crazy amount of sms ads. We both use extreme call blocker and it can block sms as well. Not sure if you get charged for sms since we have the unlimited text plan. Never felt that google voice was stable enough for kids.
