Capacitive touch buttons - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

So are three buttons here to stay or is there a chance phones in the future will go back to having four capacitive touch buttons ie Epic Touch, Evo, 3D, etc?

Well the shouldn't be any buttons at all. Google was pushing for all on screen. And I believe Google should make them customizable

I wish they would use the AOKP navigation bar options. You can basically do whatever you want with that.

Well do you think the GS4 will have four or three like the GS3?
Sent from my EPIC TOUCH!

I think the whole on-screen button thing is kind of unnecessary. All it does is take up screen space and makes the bottom bezel/margin of the phone look bigger than it needs to be.

Well, looking at it from a different perspective, that space would be taken up by buttons anyway.
Also, it can help ease engineering the design of phones as it doesn't require having to plan for fitting those components there.
And finally, it's one less piece of hardware that can fail on you.

im confused why you would ask for a forum member's input on a phone that succeeds another phone that isn't even fully released yet.

Maybe because this is an open forum where people are encouraged to ask questions, give opinions and basically share their experiences. It isn't beyond the scope of possibility that a new phone has people looking even further down the road at the next new phone and wondering what it might be like.
I swear you're starting to remind me of those grumpy old men who are always yelling "hey you kids, get off my lawn!".

I would say if Google begins to push it enough there will be no buttons. But if they decide to have buttons again and apple shuts up or Samsung just doesn't care there will be 3 buttons again.

Woops wrong section
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA App
this belongs in the general section
It's only been a couple of days, you have 14 to figure out if you can go without it.
I too will miss my keyboard. But what choice do we have now? I don't think they will ever make another flagship keyboard phone anywhere
I have been using my Epic on occasion when I have a long message to type

Yup, no key skips. At first I thought I'd miss it, but I actually don't. The large screen is perfect for my 8 sausages, and 2 pork loins.
Thread moved to proper forum.
In a few weeks you won't even remember that keyboard, in a few months the thought of one will disgust you.

Call screen going black

Just a little heads up, I don't know if anyone has faced similar problems, but I just had to replace my phone on warranty, because as soon as i place a call, the screen would go black, and never wake up, leaving me unable to hang up or work automated systems
If I was helpful, give thanks

That would be my guess. The phone goes black so you don't press buttons with your face and is supposed to come back on when pulled away...for those that were not knowing what the issue was

It indeed is. As I noticed that the screen will come on if I put the sensor right next to a light bulb, but goes dark the second its even 4 inches away from the bulb

[POLL]Did you know that holding power will do a hard shut down?

Why bother taking your case off, or wearing out the battery cover clips, or move more the necessarily?
This has never failed me.
Yes. To be honest, though, I always thought that it was power+volume up.
nope, just one button.

Holding it down for around 10 seconds will also do a soft reboot.
You can also open up your dialer and punch in *#350# to do a full reboot.
Thanks for the tip, as a new E4GT and Droid user all these tips and tricks are helpful!
you would think this would be a universal feature on all electronics by now.

Wait, what? This is news to people? Every phone and computer I've ever owned does this. And it's listed in the manual for our phone. I'm sorry, is this supposed to be a joke I'm missing or something?

When people are shocked that you can "quickly and easily" adjust the brightness of your screen by sliding your finger across the notification menu, then yes, this is definitely ground-breaking news.
Any owner's manual typically holds a few nuggets of awesome like this.

So, two sets of buttons...
A backup set, eh?
Are you some kind of funny man?
Cm9 has em and I think the goodness 2.1 has em too but I doubt it cuz we have the buttons and not as much room as a nexus.....
Can be easily enabled via build.prop
What's the point really?! Waste of space!
After crunching the.numbers,I came to the conclusion that seven buttons are better than four.
Would be a waste of screen space for me. I'd rather just use the capacitive buttons.
Meh maybe have it as an option ?
We're already limited on screen resolution when compared to the phones that use them. I don't see any reason to waste more when we already have hardware buttons that do the job.
There's actually one really good use for them, and that is when a mouse is paired via Bluetooth. The use case? If you have it MHL to HDMI to your TV or monitor.

Technically, the on-screen buttons are also capacitive but SEEEEEEEEEEEMANTICS!!!
Also, a permabar app-launcher thingy like the above post might be convenient maybe. Sorta.

Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
I'd like the option so I can try it for myself. It seems like it's a major part of the ICS experience based on CM9 on my nook color....I'd be curious about the phone implementation.
Sure, it takes up space on our limited resolution at 240 density, but, set it to 160 (like all reasonable people) and it's virtually identical. Hell, our screen has the same amount of sub-pixels as the Gnex...if the use of sub-pixels is clever enough (I have no idea) there is little difference between our screen and that of the gnex....simply put (I don't feel like getting all mathematical right now....I know it's not actually the same use of sub-pixels).....I've never seen a Gnex screen, but, my ET4G at 160 density is still sharp and awesome--though some of the smaller items are a tad jaggy....but I'll take that in exchange for the tons and tons of extra displayable information.
Yes, I want the on screen buttons...toggle-able.

Cool features. ./ general talk

I want to say hello note family! This phone is already my favorite phone. Also I like to have a thread where ppl can ask questions about anything and talk about everything. I personally like to talk about lil this I find and share them with others. So we dont blow up threads on dev section and have a million threads on things that have been answered.
So to start it off, I found that the note 2 has low light feature witch makes photos look great!!!
Same phone flash.. had galaxy s3 didn't have that feature. Thought it was cool

That will def come in handy, esp these uppoming winter months when we're all pretty much stuck inside! Inside/dark photo-taking=always a challenge.
One of the hand gestures I saw on a video that I didn't know was there is pretty cool. Basically if you have it active, while your phones on your desk or at a table, you can wave your hand over the headset and it will turn on part of the screen(most the top half) and slowly dim over a few seconds. Basically used for taking a quick peak at missed calls/text/notifications.
