CONFIRMED: No Wolfson DAC for Verizon/T-Mobile/AT&T/Sprint Variants!!! - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

Thought I would repost this topic here since this is where most people would talk about it for our US variants: Link to Original Post
So does anyone know anything about Qualcomm's WCD9310? How does it compare? Any negative reviews about it?
What do you guys think?
EDIT: We have our first comparison (Link)

Any link to the specific video? Was it a direct comparison or just one of his other videos because I'm not able to find a direct comparison video for the two.

I've been listening to music through the native the Touchwiz music player and it seems pretty good if anyone else has used it. I really like the auto equalizer and the Music Square.
One thing, bug or feature, the performance and sound quality is better when the screen off or the music player is in the background. I don't know if it only happens with headphones though.

Naw it wasn't a direct comparison. But he mention in the international review that he was disappointed with the audio. Then when he did the US review he mention that the audio was greatly improved over the international one. He knows his phones and is one of the top dogs over at phone dog. Com websites... I think many people have a sort of fanboyism towards Wolfson chips. The main influence is due to the comparison of generations of apple products. Until today the war between Wolfson and competing chips such as Cirrus Logic have been raging.
This is mainly just a placebo effect. Sound quality is something very subjective from person to person. I have an iPod Classic with a Cirrus chip, an Acer Iconia Tab A500 with a Wolfson, a Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc with a proprietarty Sony DAC, and finally a HTC One X, which doesn't have a discrete DAC and uses the one built into Tegra 3. By an A/B style comparison, with same resolution FLAC files, I'd say the Xperia and iPod are the best sounding, followed by the Acer and then the HTC.
Another point to note is that sound quality is also highly attributed to the source (uncompressed or not, quality of the record etc), and the earphones.
Pair any mobile device with a good source and good earphones and you will definitely be rewarded with good sound.

Old news....thanks for the update :good:

According to this write up on the AT&T and T-MO SGIII:
On that note, you should know that this device works with the Wolfson Micro WM1811 DAC onboard for fabulous audio output and is also able to work apt-X Bluetooth device – that’s quality sound!

there's a lot of copy paste going on with the reviews of these handsets, sometimes resulting in completely false information

If it is the same audio chipset as the HTC One S (also Qualcomm S4), there's nothing to be unhappy about:

Due to the EU sound law, the international version has capped audio and weak gain as a result. Same issue as Archos media players and tablets. Weak audio output from 3.5mm jack.

Anyone have a link to all the media and music file types the SIIII supports?
|Trolling with a smile|

I've got the sprint model, and I found the audio disappointing. I've only really noticed with rock, but my old Epic 4G sounds better, and is a little louder. Epic is indistinguishable from a CD, but the SIII is just not as good.
Im hoping some software or an equalizer can fix it.

Yep, the audio quality on the S3 leaves me wanting. Still a notch below my iPhone 4. If you guys want some more info on the SQ head over to HeadFi I know some people already put up EQ Charts and Graphs comparing the S3 to some phones.

[SOLVED] Wolfson or Yamaha?

What sound chip do you think is inside Wolfson or Yamaha. Is the sound like in Galaxy s ??
I am really wondering this too.....any info?
its 10 x louder then the vibrant thats for sure
i read that the international version of the SGSII, ATT and Sprint has yamaha, thats why Supercurio is not gonna develope voodoo sound for the SGS II line, but i can be wrong/
Has anyone received a definitive answer to this?
It's definitely going to be a serious factor in my purchasing decision.
It's been confirmed previously that it's a Yamaha chip. Anandtech.com conducted a very intricate and detailed test and the chip and lack of proper shielding definitley shows in the design. When I plug my headset in and either make a call or start up some music you can definitely hear a faint white noise in the background, since the audio levels of the music are higher you don't hear it so much if at all most of the time. They definitely could of improved the noise floor though.

that is not applicable to this release of SGS2
as it's a totally different build up inside
that review was based on the regular SGS2
It's not wolfson as that chip is a bit louder with slightly better low end. The DAC we have no is no slouch
All of that is subjective speculation. I'd like to know from someone who has examined the TMO version to conclusively show what model DAC is used. Wolfson stated previously that there chip would appear in some variant of Galaxy S2.

I'm not aware of anyone who has done a tear down to determine this yet.
Subjectively, it's quite more volume range than my Epic (SGS1).

Snapdragon S3 has Dsp manager build inside the chip. Samsung may have tweaked it to get better sound quality out of it.

I actually found a review that Supercurio wrote himself after he literally dissected the phone to see what parts were used for the audio. Here is his review on anandtech's website. Francis Simund is his real name and this is his review: http://www.anandtech.com/show/4686/samsung-galaxy-s-2-international-review-the-best-redefined/13
He also performs a series of tests to prove how much these parts are crap v. The older galaxy s models.

Well, the reason that this remained an issue so long is that we don't have an international Galaxy S2. We have the T-Mobile Galaxy S2, and despite the similar name, the different Galaxy S2's are very different phones.
If you look earlier in this thread, Wolfson actually had a press release where they stated that one of the Galaxy S2's would have their DAC in it.
It's been definitely established now, though, that it's not the original international or any of the US variants.
It would be interesting if Supercurio (should he be so inclined to do so) wouldn't mind re-performing the salient tests on the T989 hardware. It is possible that Samsung, on this later hardware rev, has corrected (or at least mitigated) some of the shielding and PLL jitter on the DAC clock.
Hardware companies do that, frequently, but I wouldn't keep my hopes up.

The Galaxy S sounds a warmer, natural and even while the samsung galaxy s2 sounds like the ones on newer apple products, overbrighten treble, so people think bass is stronger.
So yes, the original galaxy s sounds better to the ear which is why I bought that instead of S2

Wow! I was really looking for an affordable headset with great sounds when i found my old Nokia N70 original headset in my storage! Beautiful sounds, awesome details, super bass experience! I can say this old headset of mine sounds like Beats. I heard how Dr. Dre delivers sounds and i can say, as a musician my old 'stuff' sounds perfectly awesome!
Just sharing

Beats Studio or Pro for the One X..??

As title... which will you choose and why?
I really wouldn't get Beats anything, as there are cheaper alternatives which sound the same or better.
Personally I have the Pro version (don't like the fact that the studio need battery and modify the sound). They are a few cheaper alternatives but they are not as nice looking (my taste) and I got them 40% off so it was worth it
Pro: there the only beats headphones worth getting, only ones that are actually decent headphones and amazon sell them for £230 so worth it at that price
Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium
Personally I don't believe the sound quality and limited storage space of the One X is worth any headphones over £80. You are simply wasting money as the the One X sound simply awful with high end audio device, also there is no way to bypass the onboard DAC and amp.
Actually I will sell my beat pro for another headphone, sennheiser suggested
If you want Beats, keep checking this site. There's none listed right now but there will be. It's at least 50% off, sometimes more.

Neither, "Beats" headphones are for troglodytes. They have around the same audio quality as a pair of crushed up drink cans with audio modules from two speaking birthday cards stuck onto them.
Sent from my HTC One X using xda app-developers app
As said, neither. If you really want to use it up to its maximum potential, get AKG or even Audio Technica (I keep getting surprised by their value for money, most AT models have the same or better sound than 2-3 times pricier AKG models). Beats are REALLY lame in mid-range sounds, which is most important if you listen to anything other than Dubbstep.
I always find it funny how many people bash the Beats headphones, yet how many of you have actually had them to justify your choices, or just put off by the price tag instantly. I have a pair of Beats Solo HDs, used to have some iBeats, both sounded amazing when attached to my One X.
On their own (in the PC, or in my iPod) they sounded pretty generic and boring, but when attached to a HTC phone with BeatsAudio they are amazing. I've converted a few Apple-only guys over to getting a One X and some Beats just from that setting alone.

Thing is that the software makes all headsets sound good, but down-below, it's nothing more than a glorified equalizer.
If you want to get your mind blown, get hold of a Cowon player. ANY Cowon player. They're a gazillion times better (in audio quality) than anything else out there, and so when the weakest link is the headset, you tell the difference.
It also varies depending on musical style. Beats are heavy on bass and treble, but nothing in between. For the right kind of music with the right equalizer, it might sound amazing, but if you listen to something completely different - say, folk rock or classic or anything acoustic, you can tell they skimped on the mid-range in favor of the extreme highs and lows. Some people prefer that, though, so it's really just a matter of personal taste.
The bottom line though - and there are not enough words to describe how this irritates me...
Monster release absolutely ZERO technical specifications!
On ANYTHING! Beats? Nada. Clarity? Zilch. Impedance, Frequency Range, power consumption - nothing!
It makes me really suspicious of the whole thing and makes me feel like they don't publish the specs so they could put a higher price-tag on it and people would have a harder time comparing it objectively (Apple used to take the same approach, and I dislike them for reasons not very different than Monster...)
I am not an audiophile but i have the beats wireless for my one x. I listen to all kinds of music and I think they are great. Now I would not pay full price for them $280 ish. But I got them for 50% off so I went that route. I like the sound.

Bluetooth headphones with this thing are SICK!

I have a semi-decent pair of Rocketfish BT headphones that I just paired with my SGN and I gotta tell you, damn, this tablet pounds out some powerful tunes. I also own a SGS2 phone and that is nowhere close as far as the sheer energy of the music it puts out.
If you get a chance to pick up some Rocketfish BT headphones (like $50) or anything else comparable, do, you won't be disappointed pairing them with the Note 10.1.

Because aptX is lossless, the sound quality has to be heard to be believed. The HTC audio bridge is aptX and the coupler allows you to use it with any 3.5mm wired headset. If you listen to it with a FLAC file or another non-compressed source you'll be ruined for life.

Very few have aptX (yet). Assuming your content's decent it's worth the additional bucks to find BT headsets that support aptX. If you listen to highly compressed content it becomes less important as the content itself becomes the weakest link.
I recommend these. You can even answer phone calls with them. The sound is unbelievable.:good:

I have a swollen head, they'd never fit
Is there a way to tell if my tablet is streaming audio using the aptX codec?

There should be no sound quality difference between I9100/I777/N7000 and N80xx when using a BT headset, since the crappy Yamaha DAC isn't used.
I have a pair of Jaybird JF3s, they are great when combined with Comply Tx-200 tips. (Older JF3s used Tx-400 tips, newer ones need the smaller Tx-200.)

Did you mean i9000 and i9300? The N7000 uses a Yamaha YMU823.
"The Galaxy S II uses Yamaha audio hardware.[29] The Galaxy S II's predecessor, the original Galaxy S, used Wolfson's WM8994 DAC.[30] User feedback on Internet forums as well as an in-depth review at Clove,[29] have expressed the Yamaha chip's inferior sound quality compared to that of the Wolfson chip featured in the original Galaxy S."

Does anyone have sound lag from typimg? while using the rocketfish when i type there is a lag till i hear the keystroke
I checked youtube and there was no lag which is what the issue was with my 700. This keystroke sound lag is annoying

Yes I meant the I9100. The OP said there was a difference in sound quality between I9100 and N8013 which doesn't make sense as the crappy Yamaha DAC in the devices listed above isn't used for Bluetooth streaming. The only possibility is some sort of software difference in the streaming configuration.
For wired headsets, the DAC in the N80xx should provide significant improvements over the Yamaha in GS2-family devices. For Bluetooth streaming it has no role.
Jawbone Icon
I was trying to pair my Jawbone Icon BT and the SGN won't even pick up the pairing signal from the Jawbone.
Is there any issues with pairing BT headsets with SGN?
Got it to work. Just download the latest jawbone firmware, turned BT on GN on and off and then it scanned properly and paired my Jawbone Icon
Now I just hope it works well. Will test it later.:fingers-crossed:
Just recieved my LG Tone+ HBS730 with Aptx today. One word..... WOW! It sounds that much better. Enjoying it on the note 10.1 and the GS3. Highly recomend everyone to get Aptx headphones. No equalizer needed at all.
Here is a pick of what I picked up.

Also curious if anyone can confirm how much better the loudspeaker is as Samsung has been weak there (my original HTC EVO loudspeaker always seems way stronger than Samsung handsets I've tried) but very glad to read (however have yet to actually hear) that its loudspeaker is:
http://www.phonearena.com/reviews/Samsung-Galaxy-Note-II-Review_id3134/page/3
"The loudspeaker here deserves special attention - it is very strong, stronger than on the original Note, and much stronger than on the Galaxy S III - but what is more, it sounds much fuller and with deeper bass than what we are accustomed to on smartphones."
Can anyone confirm this? -Thanks
Speaker definitely sounds a bit louder and clearer than original note

I read the the speaker of the original international Note1 was significantly weaker than the US AT&T variant so not sure to which you're referring to (ATM I can only guess the weaker INTL) but how would you compare it to others including the iPhone etc & are you satisfied with it or still disappointed by the Note2 "loudspeaker"?
Also would be cool if you could address the following when you get a chance

Thanks, I guess I'll try to contact Samsung to find out why such features would be removed?..:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0j-oTLGPUEY ( Samsung Galaxy Note II Screen Recorder function )
Not sure why reviews have mentioned subpar sound recording with video footage on Note 2 unless the following video was flawed (hard to believe the iPhone 5 comparison audio is that bad?):

"PROS
Best HD Super AMOLED screen from Samsung to date
Significantly improved S Pen ergonomics andperformance
Excellent battery life
Powerful quad-core processor
Very good photos and video
Stellar call quality
Strong, clean loudspeaker
CONS
Subpar sound recording with video footage"
