Epic 4G; TW Launcher Forceclose; Applications on SD Card - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My current problem is that certain applications, not all, will dissappear after reboot if I move them to the SD Card. These applications continue to work and remain after reboot if I leave them on the phone.
The sequence of events involved a twlauncher forceclose that kept me from using my phone at all. I could do nothing other than boot into Clockwork mod. This happened after my work's Exchange Server certificate expired. Previously I had problems with a forceclose that I used the wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache and fix permissions to correct. I tried wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache and fix permissions several times to try to fix this, but it did not work.
I restored to a previous point on my phone. I had several back up points on my phone: an older one and a new one.
I had done several advanced restores: data, system, boot, to try to get the correct system to work and also to get the most up to date data. At one point, after I restored the boot data from my most recent backup boot restore, all of the applications that were on my SD card dissappeared.
I reinstalled the applications, but when I rebooted the phone, certain ones dissappeared. The applications will work and remain on my phone if I keep them on the phone.
After looking at the forums it seems I could have a problem with the SD card or the file system. The phone seems to work fine otherwise. Although, after I upgraded to CWM 5 and installed ROM manager, I got an error message regarding the first time I restored to an older backup point.
Phone configuration:
SPH-D700
Firmware: 2.3.5
Kernel: 2.6.35.7.nubernel_v0.0.2
Gingerbread.EI22
Clockwork Mod 5 (I was on Clockwork Mod 4 when I did all of the above; after I restored the phone to its current state, I upgraded to clockwork mod 5)
BTW, I would also like to upgrade to Gingerbread EL30, but it appears that I cannot simply flash the new ROM to my phone without restoring to stock ROM to upgrade.

First you can simply flash an FC09 ROM (latest). It is the modem that you need odin for.
Second: back up your sd card to a computer and reformat and restore.

Thanks
I didn't see a "thank you" on the thread, so I will post.

Okay, I thought finding the fc09 ROM would be easy. However, all I have found it The People's Rom and Serncity by Random Kings. Is there a link for the stock fc09 to flash to my phone.

You're lucky, you don't need to today. It's on page 1 right now.

I bumped the stock prerooted deodexed ROM to the top for you.

Do you have a tar file so I can Odin.
I did a factory wipe, backed up the sd card, formated the sd card, and then tried to install the zip from the card, but the phone freezes at the Samgsung boot screen and won't go past. I even went and bought a new cable.
I tried to flash ECO5 with Odin, and it rebooted past the Samgun screen. Then I get an error message:
system UIDs Inconsistent" UIDS on the system are inconsistent, you need to wipe your data partition or your device will unstable
After this I tried to get usb storage to connect and when I mount the usb storage, it appears on the computer as drive j, but I cannot do anything with it.
I would really like to have a functioning phone.

If you want stock go here but they have el30 download link if you want fc09 download here

I downloaded the stock fc09, and while I would prefer to be rooted, I now have a functiong phone.
Thanks for the help

Root the phone if you prefer to have it that way. All your issues sounded like data corruption anyhow.
Use Odin to flash the CWM tar file without reboot option checked, battery pull after flash, boot into recovery and flash a FC09 kernel from the dev forum. Lastly you'll just need to install Superuser from the Play Store.

That, or fkash the FC09 prerooted deodexed stock ROM in the dev section.

need help fast! stuck on incredible screen

So my phone now will only reboot up to the HTC Incredible white screen. I'm not even sure what the issue is, all i did last before it got stuck was erase data on an old sd card i had in the phone. Then I just did a reboot and it froze on the white screen.
I'm running GB evervolv 2.3.2 with 2.6.37.4 incredikernel.
I can get into HBOOT but when i click on recovery it takes me into fastboot everytime.
What can i do to fix this????
Sorry please move this thread to the Q&A section, i thought that's where I was posting it, my bad.
Go to the Clockwork Recovery thread and download the update for a different version and try getting that to flash via bootloader. That way you can at least get into recovery if you need to flash new. Just to clear it up, did you use your phone to delete stuff off the old card, by using Astro or ES file explorer? I know ES file explorer has root access so is there a chance you could've deleted a system file on accident? All it takes is a click of the SD card icon and you're in root instead of SDcard. Also this is probably a thread more for the Q&A subforum, just an fyi
i deleted an old sd card that i don't even use for my phone, i was just putting it in there to clear out whatever was left on it. so i could use it new.
And it still bootloops even when you put your normal SD card back in?
yup, i dunno what it's deal is.
I remember an older version of cm7 on the nook color warned against formating sd cards because it accidentaly formats the boot partition, this may be a bug that exists in the rom your using.
at least you can get into hboot, you should be able to download ruu image and flash it in hboot. this would get you back to stock, then root and install clockwork, and then restore your latest nandroid.
Flash this recovery in hboot
http://downloads.unrevoked.com/forever/recovery/clockworkmod/PB31IMG.ZIP
It should at least give you a working recovery.
i have to rename things as update.zip in order for hboot to flash them right??

NO leave it PB31IMG.ZIP.
hboot can only see that name. if you rename it hboot will not see it at all.
also make sure your card is formatted as FAT32
got it into recovery so i'm just wiping and restoring, thanks for the help!
ok now i'm getting a bootloop on the cm7 boot screen...i just went to flash that new instead of my nandroid because the nandroid was from an older rom.
Did you wipe everything? Davik, Cache, Data, etc?
wiped data and cache...didn't do davik because i've never had to in the past. but i'll give it a try.
would i need to update CMW from version 2.0+ to 3 in order for cm7 to work? because it's still bootlooping
THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT JUST HAPPENED TO ME!
i was on MIUI 1.3.25 (the newest GB release) and i was formatting an sd card and when i restarted my phone i got stuck at the splash screen! i have been able to boot back into cwm recovery but even when i wipe and flash, nothing works.
i booted into recovery and tried to restart from there - failed
i reflashed 3.18 (wiped cache/dalvik) - failed
i wiped all data and reflashed 3.18 - failed
wiped all, flashed 3.25, fixed permissions - stuck at splash screen again
restored an old MIUI (v1.1.15) - stuck at splash screen
pleaseee let me know if you figure this out
edit:
i ran the RUU and got stock to start working. i'm about to root and try flashing something

Are you getting errors when you wipe?like when you wipe data does it say error can't mount or anything like that.... I have a feeling you may have to flash an Ruu and then reroot

I always mount my sdcard in a linux and format/fix/repartion, or at least let Clockwork Recovery do it. I have never found a Sense, Vanilla, or AOSP ROM that handled SD partition operations very well, without at least a little tragedy.

This tends to be things go as far as ROMs partitioning my sd, always back it up externally and format/partition before transferring stuck back over to it while in phone.

Help! Phone Not Working Anymore :(

I flashed back to stock first, then I installed CMW, then SU.apk,
then i flashed full wipe by darkside (?) from dev forum.
then when i went to install from the SD card for juggernaut rom, it gives me error ever since.. it says (bad)
my computer can't read my phone anymore,
phone stops at the booting screen,
factory reset isn't helping either...
any suggestions? anyone?

When you are in recovery go to mounts and then mount usb storage. Then connect your phone to your pc. Try downloading another rom and transferring it over. (this would require an external sdcard)
Can you get in to download mode? If so just use the stock Oden and go back to stock. Then flash clockwork mod recovery via Odin, flash whatever rom you want to use. For what it's worth I am very happy with macnut
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium
If you can get into recovery I would suggest reflashing whatever rom it is you want, i usually format everything except /sdcard whenever I flash a new rom to ensure theres nothing leftover (some might argue this but its never served me wrong), then follow the instructions the OP posted in the rom you want to flash. It sounds like a bad flash to me anyway.

As suggested above, try download mode (holding volume up and down while plugging in USB) and flashing through Odin. As to what's giving you the error, it could be a bad download (always check MD5 sums once its on your phone!), or if it was giving an MD5 sum mismatch then that usually is a result of renaming the file on your phone. Anything that you flash cannot have any spaces in it, otherwise it won't read. That goes for nandroid backups as well.

Did i softbrick my device? Please help!

So i reset my GS3 yesterday. I am running a stock rooted phone.. My phone has always been fine but after a reset through the phone the phone never loaded back up. It was stuck on the samsung screen. I tried pulling the battery out a few times. I went into my CWM recovery and tried wiping both caches with no luck. I tried restoring the phone and that didn't work. I finally tried wiping all data and now the phone won't boot at all. It says phone can not boot and will go into odin mode. Odin will recognize my phone though. What should i do? Should I try to restore my phone to factory through odin? I can't find the stock sprint version tar file. I could only find the verizon one. Can someone help me and tell me what is the best step for me? I can get into CWM but the phone won't boot.

If you can get into recovery mode, you can just restore a nandroid backup (if you have one made). If you don't have one, you can wipe /system, /data, and the caches and reflash your Rom (provided you have it saved on your SD card).
If none of the above work, download mode is your best friend.
You can get into Download (Odin) Mode. That's a good thing. Sextape has the md4 TAR file for your over in their thread (warning, outside link). They have the stock unrooted as well as stock rooted file. Since you have already wiped your data, you might as well flash the "Restore" version:
"Restore" Versions - Wipes your user data
SPH-L710_MD4_1130792_Stock_Restore [EXE|TAR.MD5.GZ]
SPH-L710_MD4_1130792_Rooted_Restore [EXE|TAR.MD5.GZ]

If you know how to use Odin, you can just downlaod the TAR file, but I recommend using their auto-extractor (the exe file), since it's well tested and there's less chance of user error.
All that being said, I'm curious to how your phone became "softbricked." Did you install any apps or mods recently that could've caused it? Custom Kernel?
It sounds like you eventually ended up wiping /system, which would be why you can't boot up now. I haven't heard of it automatically going into download mode because of that, but I haven't tested it on my phone, either.
try rwilco 12's android file repository. he has everything you will need
http://www.rwilco12.com/
You can also take the sd card out plug into a computer download a rom zip put it on the sd card pop it back into the phone and flash through the custom recovery which should be there.

Thanks for the help everyone. I guess I didn't soft brick the phone I just wiped it and there was no rom on it.

[q] help please

Hello, I have a rogers i747 and I installed the newest CM build today and my internal storage would no longer show up. Afterwards I tried to use a recovery in TWRP and now my phone won't install data or system from any files that I try to flash. The phone will go into recovery mode and it will also go into downloading mode but I have no idea what to do. I can't seem to use any of my recoveries or even flash a new ROM onto the phone.
..
Are you entirely sure internal storage is gone? If you didn't know, the storage is nested into an emulate /0 folder. If you can get the phone to boot go ahead and look around in File Manager or Root Explorer for that folder. Everything you had on internal storage should be located there.
Onto the crazier things you're mentioning...
You should only have one "recovery". Unless of course you mean to say backups that you've saved in the event something goes wrong. Unfortunately with some recoveries the blob files for the backup stack up over time and get too large to be restored. I think updating the recovery might fix that, but I never had to mess with any of that stuff. I usually ended up returning to completely stock software to fix the issues I had the first few times I caught problems no amount of wiping would fix.
Before you do anything crazy go ahead and boot into recovery (hold volume up + home button + power until you see the samsung logo and it boots into twrp or cwm depending on what you're using), clear cache, clear dalvik cache in advanced and then reboot system now. Some issues are taken care of by that, some aren't.
Failing that, try a full wipe of your phone and reflashing the ROM assuming your files haven't been corrupted/deleted somehow.
If that doesn't work you'll need to use Odin or Kies or whatever to return to completely stock and reroot and all that nonsense.
Good luck.
I ended up having to flash a stock rom with Odin and it ended up working again. Not sure what happened but none of my backups would load and the phone was saying that storage was in use but the files weren't accessible and the backups wouldn't write to the internal storage they would say successful but do nothing. If I install twrp and try to flash cm again is there a chance that this same issue will occur again? And does anyone have an idea of why this occurred in the first place? I have never had an issue flashing between roms or using recoveries in the past. Just afraid of permanently bricking my phone at this point by installing a custom rom again. Never had issues before the new cm.

[Q] bootloop with no access to int.sd. no flash, no backup.

Ok Id like to start with the fact that I have searched for this on google and the forums. I did find a modded recovery img but still not much as far as why/what caused this. Heres the details:
decided today was the day I was gonna flash from stock 4.1.2 to PA 3.99. I revisited the thread to make sure on the development, and to see if there was any special instructions. Just to be safe I also stopped by the TWRP thread and found that update info as well and did what was needed in Goo Manager. So with updated recovery a fresh backup, I went forward with flashing. Wiped everything, flash PA then Gapps, then BMS well....no issue. Booted to system like normal setup google and went about my way tweaking with visual preferences. I then had to reboot, because PA_Gapps needed to be flashed in the PA udpater, so I let it do its thing....this is where things turn bad. Rebooting to recovery went fine as it flashed the new gapps....but after the reboot it just STAYED at the samsung logo "booped by BMS"....nothing else. left it for 10 mins, still nothing happened.
I then try to recover with my backup...nope i couldnt see anything in TWRP file manager. It said eMMC, sd-ext, sdcard, root, boot, data, cache, datadata and usb-otg were empty directories. I cant do anything right now. I've really never had to deal with odin or ADB and its lookin more and more like Im gonna have to go that method.
Does anyone have any insight on this issue? Thx
Yes all your backups and your root files gave been moved to the emulated folder. That happens when you flash 4.2 or 4.3 using your recovery your going to have to search your internal storage until you find it. Or you can connect the phone to the computer access your internal storage abd copy everything to the 0 folder directory. But if you go into recovery wipe everything again and search your internal storage you will find the rom and you should be able to reflash. The gapps is what messed you up.
Remember search is your best friend, Have a great day!

Thank you, but i cant flash anything.
I just tried wiping and it said failed. I tried factory reset and a full wipe both failed. I can odin files but i cant flash a damn thing. I cant find clockwork tar to odin for the life of me. Any directory I need, seems to have access cut off to it through recovery.
I actually searched the WHOLE filesystem and did not find folder 0. Same for any of the prior files i had in the internal storage.
As we speak i just reflashed PA 3.99 successfully, when i tried wiping dalvik it failed, still couldnt access most directories and factory wipe failed too.
Any ideas?

ok....redownloading TW 4.1.2.
eMMC, sd-ext, sdcard, root, boot, data, cache, datadata and usb-otg were empty
and going to odin your link
Could this have to do with TWRP asking for a password on recovery boot?
fixed with downgrade to twrp 2.4.4.0 then full wipe then back up to 2.6.1.0. Thanks for your response

Well I really mistaken when I thought it was fixed. I can just format data and it returns to normal boot but only one time. After that boot into system any reboot causes the same bootlock or password request @ twrp start. What am I missing? I haven't formatted every partition, updated and downgraded twrp, defaulted everything and still same issue. Does this have to do with TWRPs new encryption feature? I can't downgrade TWRP right now but that's my next to do. When did they start recovery encryption? pls&thx and yes i search everytime for anyone feeling that this is not worth helping.
I dont try to bother anybody on here unless i have to, and when i have to....well not too often does there seem to be much kindness behind the help. This isn't a stab at anyone, just observations of other peoples requests along with mine.
Again thx.
Flash to clockwork. Been working fine ever since
