Should I buy used GSM Gnex with known signal issues? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I found someone selling a excellent condition GSM Gnex here in the U.S. He says it has issues keeping a signal. I have read on here and other places that it is a fairly common problem. I have also read of people claiming to fix it but I find many different things regarding different countries radios, etc. Keeping in mind I have not rooted a phone before, however I am some what literate to tech things. Should I buy this phone? Is there actually a fix? I am suppose to do the deal fairly soon. Thanks in advance

200 is a good deal .... I probably would go for it lol I think u could probably get your money back reselling if it stumps u on signal issue.

Maybe flashing a new raadio could fix this issue .. maybe u have to root of course but use the nexus root toolkit from wugfresh its really easy and new radio if u want i can post a link here
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium

I doubt its a hardware problem... Anything software/firmware/radio can be changed. If its not physically broken than it's just user error messing things up and dropping signal. If you're willing to troubleshoot it and flash new firmware it's probably a good deal.

Thanks again for the info.
Im brand new to Android with only using a HTC Amaze for the last week or so. Got the GNex Saturday. The phone is already rooted so I followed instructions found on this site and installed bigxie_maguro_JRN84D_v2-signed.zip so I could have JB. I then flashed the Radio you suggested.
I have Simple Mobile which I was using with my other phone (HTC Amaze) and never had problems. With the GNex, in my house I get a pretty good consistent signal. When I drive around my city I completely loose service for blocks in many places I never had a problem before with my other phone (HTC Amaze). In some places I can go to one end of a room and have no service and walk to the other end and have service. Im now at work where I never had problems with my Amaze and I have no service at all with this phone.
I have been doing some reading and notice most complain of signal lose being attached to sleep but this is not the case with me. When driving I kept it awake and would just watch it go to no service for blocks and them come back. Also many complain of the signal being just "weaker" then other phones they used but I am getting NO signal any many places that where find before.
I tried the clear cache trick suggested in one post but still have the same problem. I also tried the GetRiL program which says everything is fine as far as my radio set up. Im showing a baseband of l9250XXLF1. Any suggestions would be highly appreciated. I love this phone otherwise and would really like to use it.

I have a nexus and my father has a HTC rezound. He is always at least 10DBM stronger, most of the time more. It's been that way with every Samsung phone I've owned (charge and fascinate) Samsung's radios are just weaker apparently. Motorola is stronger than HTC but not by much.

I had a phone with a bad/unfixable radio and got a replacement so it does happen.

First off, nobody help the OP because he admitted it was "found" and second shame on the OP for not bringing it to Sprint to try and have it returned to its owner. That us all.

Screen shot of about phone

Make it short and sweet I need to call Verizon to try and get a replacement.. They're going to ask me some info that's on my about phone screen but I have custom roms and kernels installed..
Could someone with a stock phone please take a screen shot of the about phone screen so I can provide the correct answers when asked

If you're so sure it's a hardware issue wouldn't you have to send it back? In which cause they'd notice you've voided the warranty with root and/or custom ROMs?

You realize it's easy to tell whether a phone has been unlocked, right? Potentially, Verizon could see the flag has been set and tell you to go pound salt.
Also, the mic cutting out *COULD* be a software issue. You said it happens to like half the people, but I've never had it happen, and I know 4 people with the phone that have no trouble. That's 0/5, which is less than 1/2.

It's real simple.. I didn't post this to argue with people. If you're willing to help me out then thank you. If not, then shut the hell up.
Look at the topic "microphone cutting out mid call" I never said it's hardware or software. But I do know it's not related to my rom. I've had Verizon replace my phone already for this issue and to be quite honest I'm looking to get a different phone because I'm sick of this one screwing up.
The issue I'm having is totally irrelevant, I just need a screen shot so I don't have to go back to stock 4 days earlier than necessary.

If this is my first time doing it then I'd agree with you, but why do I need to return to stock to give some Verizon tech that doesn't even know if my phone has a removable battery or not answers to questions that doesn't matter.

What they're likely going to ask is Android version, baseband, build number, etc. to check if you're updated to 4.0.2 or if something got corrupted or whatnot. It's not like they're going to ask what the kernel version is.
Why don't you guys stop being dicks and just help him. Go troll somewhere else. He obviously doesn't want to sit stock for 3 days. Who would? I'll get my Buddy to send me a picture for you bro. Give me a few

Giving up....

Over a month in and only solution for our serious connection problems has been an air rave (which definately worked but doesn't come close to getting this phone where I need it to be (just receive calls)) not to mention I think it just blew up anyway!!! Question becomes ...does anyone know if I unlock and flash all Verizon firmware. Radio....etc ...can I take this gnex to local Verizon store and have it connected? I'm sure its not that easy?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
Take it back get a replacement. This is an ongoing issue.this is assuming your reception is bad everywhere and your data bars turn to grey alot..
Yea they offered that ...is it viable solution? They want to ship refurbished ...doesn't seem fair..just bought this month ago...and was bad out of the box....
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
Worked for me I went to the store and they gave me a brand new one..
Verizon's policy is <14 days = New.
>14 refurbished.
You may be able to explain the situation (stating that you simply thought it was a Galaxy Nexus thing) but you've since realized this is not the case and you'd like a NEW device considering the damage was always there and is not related to abuse.
This is a confirmed hardware issue...and many users have gotten a replacement that has worked perfectly after simply thinking the GNex got terrible service.
I have been with at&t now for three weeks - Noc'd up 1x - still gonna go back and try to get new gnex....this is all good bit miss that straight up google/android.....senseless. guess just have two lines....thx for tall help

I just gave up too, I've been considering making a thread about my experience.
I've had 6 CLNR Verizon Nexus. Several had severe burn in/screen issues. The other have all had radio problems where I am constantly dropping data anytime I'm on the move. I waited for the leaked radios and the 4G seems to stay locked longer, but I'm still having the same issues.
Verizon is sending me a S III and it will be here next week. It may technically be a better phone, but it's bittersweet. I hate TouchWiz and love the idea of having a Nexus device, I just wish I could get one that worked. Hopefully I can just run CM10 and be happy.
Be on the lookout for me selling all my Nexus accessories and batteries soon, ha.

Google doesn't have anything to do with the issues, blame Samsung and maybe your carrier.

I have a faulty phone with signal issues. Can I take matters into my own hands?

Alright so I have one of those dreaded releases where the signal is constantly dropping, 4g is absolutely terrible, and the signal NEVER goes above 2 bars. I live in a well covered area and should be getting full 4g all the time.
I bought the phone off Craigslist so when I first noticed the problem I went to Verizon. They told me that they couldn't help me because the phone was purchased off contract. So then I went to Samsung. They agreed to repair my phone, and after 2 weeks of not having it I finally got it back. Samsung did not fix it because it is still having the exact same problems.
So...as anybody tracked down the cause of this issue? Is it the antenna? Can I buy a new antenna and just replace it myself?
This is rather frustrating
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
Is it possible that it just gets a weaker signal than your old phone?
I don't think so seeing as the service just drops out completely sometimes. Plus I've read quite a bit about other nexus owners having the exact same problem

Ah, okay, I thought it was more of a weak signal issue. Sorry about that. I would call Samsung again and request a replacement device, if at all possible.
Did you read that thread about how the Gnex calculates its signal strength? I can't remember where it is, but try searching for it. It explains how the Gnex uses a different method to calculate the amount of bars it shows, so it can show less bars for any given signal strength than another phone that uses the older method.
Following on from that, perhaps there is some mod you could make to the OS to change how it calculates the number of bars. All the files where the instructions are stored are mentioned in the post I saw. Sorry I can't remember where it is, I found a post in this forum with a link to an article on the net...

Yeah, I don't know much about it, just thought maybe might be useful.
But it just occurs to me reading the post again;
Has he tried changing his baseband? CHeck in the general forum, there's a list of all basebands with downloads
Is it running the stock rom and unrooted? When you bought it did the guy modify it in any way?
When I bought it it was on custom rom with a custom kernel and I think even a different radio. Before I sent it back to Samsung I returned it to complete stock ics which is what I'm on now
So currently unrooted with stock ics

Im not sure if I am having the same issue or not, but I live in Dallas and have plenty of coverage. Any other ATT phone I have had has never had an issue with signal. My phone shows full bars but I keep dropping data. I have to turn airplane mode on and then back off and it will fix it and I can use data again. Anybody know the fix for this? Flash a different radio maybe? I am using AOKP JB v1.
I still want to know if people think it is a problem with the antenna. Because I would say I can easily replace the antenna myself

[Q] Very weak signal on Note II. Radio Help?

Hey XDA Fam bam!
I have the T-mobile branded Note II and i'm experiencing the following problem:
Very weak signal.
Here's a little background. I rooted the phone and installed pmtr3 first V1 Rom and everything was perfect.
Then played around with other roms too and then the signal went every weak.
Then when I went back to pmtr3's first rom my signal did not improve. I would lose connection
everywhere. I replaced my tmo sim card, but I still experience this problem. I also went back to my stock nandroid backup, but it still did not help my signal problem.
Is there some sort of radio or modem I can flash? Am I the only one experiencing this problem?
I'm thinking it can be a hardware problem, but Idk. What input do you have my XDA fam bam?
