[Q] After Root... why change the stock rom? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Any particular reason for this?

Some people wanna do their own mods rather than install a custom ROM.

Well, have have done installs for many custom roms, but this phone is just for my wife, so I just wanted to make sure there isn't any harm in rooting for additional apps etc. like titanium if she is just going to want stock. Do I have it right?

No, you don't have to change anything if you root it. Its all optional changes. You can just have root and use root apps, you don't have to change the system at all if you don't choose to.
But if she just wants stock... why are you rooting it in the first place?

lol because she's going to want more reliable ways to back up app data among other things and, TO ME, Titanium is the ONLY way to go.

Why change the stock ROM?
Because developers make some pretty great modifications to the UI, kernel, and such.
Make your phone reflect your personality, not the service provider's. (bleh)

After a while people might want to change, sometimes not, but if you already have it rooted it will be easier on you.

If all you want is a good backup, just make a nandroid and transfer a copy to your computer.

I know, but don't I have to root to do nandroid? That's one of the reasons I wanted to root to begin with.

Yes.
At this point, the potential for disaster while rooting is minimal as long as one follows all steps correctly.

Nope, no root required for nandroid.
Keep in mind though: a nandroid backup backs up your entire ROM as is. If you restore it you are back to where you were. TB backs up your apps, so you can restore them on the same ROM or on a different one.

Okay, so when the Jelly Bean ota comes through for Sprint, will it be okay to take it with the custom recovery I installed or not?

You will need to download it yourself (or move it from /cache to /sdcard) and then it will install with your custom recovery. It will not install over-the-air with a custom recovery.

I have a quasi related question. The Xoom got Jelly Bean recently, and even though I wiped my device and did a factory reset from recovery, all of my music I had put in the internal SD card was still there. Why wasn't all of the internal erased, and could I expect this when I install Jelly Bean on my wife's Nexus?

If you wipe data with CWM, it will NOT touch /sdcard.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2

Why?
And why is CWM the only custom recovery that doesn't?
Additionally, when ROM installations insist on CWM, why would they also have instructions to put the ROM zip on the external card if the internal is safe?

It is only that you had been so helpful that in anticipation of Jelly Bean for the Galaxy Nexus, I was asking a general question about custom recoveries here because until now you had been especially helpful to me, and I was eager to give you even more thanks, but it appears I have wasted both of our times instead. I apologize. Good day.

I'm sure you would have to, luckily amon ra is a great recovery utility and creates nandroid copies of your stock Rom on command, I have yet to try reverting to my stock Rom, but I can tell you this I restored a nandroid of my stock with no problems, but read my signature... No, you have to be rooted.
Rooting is the easiest part.

Just take your time and follow all of the directions, only on the root link no need to rush you.

You flash whatever ROM you want over whichever ROM. JB, ICS has nothing to do with it.

Amon_RA does not make a recovery for the Galaxy Nexus. And there is no such thing as "S-OFF" for Samsung devices.

You either need root, or an unlocked bootloader. If you don't have one of the two, then no.

Nandroid backup without custom recovery?

EDIT: I just flashed TWRP thru GooManager and I'm making my stock backup now.
I've been using CWM on my last two phones to make nandroid backups.
With the S3, I have rooted but left everything stock, and would like to continue to do so. Is there a way to do backups with the stock recovery, Odin, or some other method?

Just in case someone else asks for this in the future, I'm almost positive the ToolKit there is an option within there for a complete stock Nandroid option. Although, it isn't completely necessary considering how easy it is to revert to complete stock with these phones.
Toolkit?

New gs3 user rooting this phone for first time

Hey guys, and so you know, I have rooted my vibrant, but i just have a few questions i could not find the answer to,weirdly
1. Factory unlock needed? Is there a different root procedure ( wouldnt be suprised)
2. The possibility of hardbricking, high or low.
3. Can I restore a backup of a different version of android if possible, and do i just need to wipe cache etc to flash the same version of android.
Thanks in advanced and sorry if this is noobish, just dont really have a lot of time due to school.

1. Factory unlock...? The easiest way (at least for me) was using Odin to inject root into stock ROM.
2. As with any tinkering/modding with any Android device, there is always a risk of hard bricking, but if you follow the procedures carefully, you shouldn't run into any issues.
3. Not sure what you really mean, but as i always say, it's always best to flash fresh (full wipe)
hope this helps, good luck!
1) unlock not needed but if you want u can do it for free; check general section
2) less possibility of hard bricking unless u flash rom for different phone ; dont forget to backup imei number ; high possibility of loosing it.
3) restore from diffwrent version highly not recommend if you want bug free phone.
And that is how you turn you're soon to be rooted phone into a rocket ship with fireworks coming out of it!

And also, i want confirm because my friend said clockwork will be wiped after first reboot after using, is this true? Or does is stay for as long as you wish.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
Umm, the clockwork recovery? It stays forever.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
Hey man. Welcome over to this side of the fence.
The Recovery gets saved into the recovery partition and will stay until you switch it out with another (TWRP) or stock. So that is a non-issue.
Being a fellow ex-Vibe user, I understand your questions. Same as the Vibrant you can flash/restore laterally and not have any issues as long as you wipe, reset, usual stuff. But also same as the Vibrant, you should not go from ICS to JB or JB 4.2 and back without a clean install (can always upgrade but going back is where issues come into play). And by clean install I mean Odin to reset the proper partitions. That is another thing. You should probably update your Odin. There is a thread around here with it or just get your Google on.
If you are on stock TWiz, you can use (your recently updated) Odin to flash mrRobinson's Root66 and it will be stock ROM but with Root. Way easier than the Update.zip scene we had on the Vibrant.
Another thing is that the internal is set up differently. The internal is set up as a /data/media partition. This means that if you Factory Reset with the Stock recovery, you will effectively wipe your whole internal SD. However, if you use CWR or TWRP, they won't wipe your internal SD unless you Format Data. I learned that the hard way on my tablet about a year ago.
Good luck

But this is kind of confusing like I have to flash a fw thru odin that already has root?

Its not the only way to root it, but if you do it that way you won't lose things in your SD anyway, only your data like apps and stuff.. An easier way is to just flash clockwork mod and flash superuser which will give you root, it will however trip your flash counter.. I've done it both ways

Phone Backup

Hey folks,
Is there a way to back up my phone and have it on my computer harddrive in its entirety (Pictures, messages, settings) if its rooted?
I'm looking for a similar way to the blackberry back ups just incase something happens to my phone - lose/damage.
Thanks!
There may be an app but I don't use one.
Nandroid and copy internal and external sd contents to your computer.

This is solid advice, but it's my personal opinion that Kies is garbage. Just like BBDM.

I too dislike Kies but am looking for an alternate to BBDM as it did the job quite well.
So are there no alternatives to a "full" backup method like this for rooted phones?

You can make a complete bit for bit backup using a custom recovery such as CWM or TWRP. I use CWM and keep a backup on my PC and my extsd card.
Yeah, I just did a backup with TWRP last night. It's easy - you just need to install "Goo manager" from the Play Store and go to the menu and do "install recovery script".
Once you have that, you can boot into recovery and do a backup - once you have the backup, you can move/copy it to your computer HDD.

Recovery Issue

So I just got another GNex while I wait for more development on the Optimus G.
But for some reason whenever I backup a rom, that's all it does. It doesn't backup the whole configuration. So when I restore a backup I have to set up everything and re-download all my applications again etc.
Anyone seen this before?

Use titanium backup to backup your apps. When backing up a ROM it backs up the ROM itself. Example is when you accidentally brick your phone. You restore the ROM to its stable form not the apps.

No there's definitely something not right, every time and every phone I've used nandroid on backs up eeeeverything, games, apps, settings, rom, texts etc. The only thing it doesn't backup is the sd card.

Negative. A nandroid is a snapshot of the entirety of the system and user data. Barring a few notable circumstances, restoring a backup restore everything on the device as it was at the point in time the backup was made, save for the sdcard.

You might want to dig up and find an older build and see if that will work.
