why are you suggesting using a toolkit to a user that doesn't know what's happening manually, let alone what a toolkit does.
It will be that much harder to track down any issues that may arise.

LOL, I think that's the whole point of the ToolKit.. So the user doesn't have to go through the manual stuff. Kind of hard to mess up on the V7 toolkit. The Dev made it pretty much dummy proof. As long as the drivers(Android 1.0) are installed on your computer you're pretty much good 2 go

Yeah I'm aware of that thread but 90% of that entire thread are just back and forth post of their experience with other toolkits with other phones and how people should learn how to do it manually and yada yada LOL.. I read that entire thread before I used V7 toolkit to root mines and have to say I don't see what the big fuss is about when someone wants to do it the easy way. It's very simple and very hard to mess up.. All you do is press 1,2,3 ect.

It's not about other toolkits, and it's certainly not about other phones -- it's a GNex thread...
It's fine to use a toolkit when you understand how it's doing things, but if you don't, AND something screws up, you'll be right back here with a new thread saying something like: "I used a toolkit to do abc and now it won't xyz", and asking for help. (Did you click on any of the example links in that thread?) Thing is, it is much more difficult to troubleshoot when a toolkit is used, compared to typing in the commands yourself.

At the end of last year, knowing that I will get a Nexus One and encourage by a relative, I decided to mod my G1.
It was a painful experience, for the XDA devs and Forum members, because I was totaly new and inexperienced.
I would like to pay tribute mostly to Frankdrey for his constant and kind help.
I was embarrassed and ashamed by my misunderstanding and mistakes. He never gave up on me.
I am for ever grateful to him. Should I say I hate him for giving me the virus of toying my phones.
He was not alone in his help. Demkator brought his much needed contribution too.
I am very thankful to him. And, of course, I took advantage of the outstanding job done by Ezterry.
Without them I would not have succeeded in rooting my G1.
Without them I would have not learn how to unlock, root, select the right radio, a Rom, a Kernel. Without the knowledge I acquired from them I would not have tried to mod my Nexus One after getting my GSM GalaxyNexus.
Maybe I would have had two bricks.
If at the time I had found a Toolkit chances are that, during my strugle to understand and implement the different steps to use Adb and Fastboot and to install a Rom, I would have embrace it.
That is why I fully agree with you, Efrant: we learn and the more we learn the more we increase our capabilities.
As far as my Galaxy Nexus is concerned I am waiting for the OTA to use and play with it.
Then I will unlock it (thanks, Efrant for the tutorial) and put a Rom and apps.
Needless to say I hope that we will be able to install a "unified search" as it is now with ICS 4.04.

[Q] Can ya help a 13 year old install a rom please?

Hi!
i'm 13 years old and I just bought my Samsung Galaxy Nexus after saving for it for since Christmas and birthday money!
i tried to post this in his thread but i got rejected from making it in the Development section cos i dont have 10 posts.
I would really really like to install molesarecoming's [ROM] PARANOIDANDROID [TABLET/HYBRID] ROM because I think it looks well cool!
I think i can do it via the Nexus toolkit but i dont understand what molesarecoming means by needing to;
Install Rom (MAGURO/GSM): MF
Install Gapps: MF
Install Fix (MAGURO/GSM): MF
Wipe cache
Wipe dalvik cache
Fix permissions - this one can take a long time, dont get scared!
The cache i can wipe via the toolkit right?
also, when i read through his thread [some of it - over 100 pages!!] i saw people mention kernals and basebands and aokp. i dont understand what they are but i understand that i can do them through the toolkit. i've read through the rooting guides and stuff but i dont have any programming understanding.
am i way too much young for this or can it be done? i admit i am not too good with this. but i really think his [rom] looks well good!!
my mates older brother got the HTC One X and he keeps telling me i got the crap phone but i think the Nexus is nicer to hold and i can always put a new battery in when it runds low!! and i dont like HTC's overlay (called sense?).
please guys, can you help?

All of this can be done in a custom recovery such as ClockWork Mod. You can use the toolkit to unlock your bootloader, root the phone & (I think) install CWM recovery as well. If CWM recovery is not installed via toolkit - once you have root find an app in the Play Store called "Rom Manager" and install ClockWork Mod Recovery that way. Once you are in recovery: the fist thing you should do is make a backup, also called a Nandroid. You will need this Nandroid backup encase anything goes wrong in the future you can revert back to a stable state. After the backup has completed: the ROM, Gapps & fix all have their own .zip file which you can "flash", you will see options to "Install .zip from..". Flash each .zip. then you will see the options in recovery to "wipe cache", "wipe dalvik cache", and "fix permissions". I think the "fix permissions" option may be in the "advanced" menu. Make sure you have a full battery before attempting any of this, and do ALLOT of reading before attempting. Get as familiar as you can with the different terms and processes before you do your flashing. Again, reading and reading is the best advice I can offer.. There are many users here who are much more knowledgeable than I am, and all the info you need is already here somewhere in these forums, I'm just trying to get you started in the right direction. Good luck.

I remember when I rooted my first android phone. I was thirteen when I rooted the Motorola Devour. It was an awful phone. Not a single ROM or Mod available, but at least I could debloat it. If you don't want paranoid android, I'd recommend regular CM9.

Congratulations on getting your Galaxy Nexus! Don't worry, it's an amazing phone (even compared to the likes of the HTC One X) and many people will only purchase from the Nexus line, myself included. Having the pure Google experience and getting updates straight from Google are well worth it. Before you start on the rooting / unlocking process, listen to everyone else here; do as much research as you can. It can seem intimidating at first but in the long run you will have a deeper understanding and it that be very beneficial. It can also be the difference between a phone running a custom ROM w/ an unlocked bootloader or ending up with a brick
msedek and WiredPirate gave you info. that is need-to-know. Learn what you can about ADB, fastboot and recovery. Those three things are what you will be using all the time to flash ROMs, radios, etc. Before flashing each ROM make sure you select the option in recovery to wipe data / factory reset. Or you can download a Super Wipe file made by a developer named Mike and flash that. This basically gives you a clean slate so then you can flash your new ROM.
If you have any questions at all please do not hesitate to ask and any one of the members here at xda will be glad to help, enjoy

This guy is correct however when there is an update for a rom most of the time if you just wipe cache and your dalvik cache, flash the rom update and then gapps again, then fix permissions you should be good to go.. This can be done for updates UNLESS the dev explicitly states that a full wipe is recommended or when you are changing a rom (say you want to change from paranoid android to aokp rom you would need to full wipe)

ok, so i am making a list of what to read and i have come up with this list;
1) msedek's - link that he posted at me in this thread.
2) Evostance's - [HOW TO] Unlock Bootloader & Root GSM Nexus.
i found this in mohitrocks [INFO][GSM] **COMPLETE OVERHAUL** ROMS,KERNELS, RECOVERIES + more NOW COLOUR CODED!
3) Mskip's - [GNex TOOLKIT V6.1] Drivers, Backup, Unlock, Root, CWM, Flash, Mods + MUCH MORE [GSM]
because WiredPirate says i can use the toolkit to unlock the bootloader, root the phone and install CWM recovery as well. he also said that getting familiar with different terms and stuff and says to read up on the forums as much as possible.
4) Google about ADB, fastboot and recovery and try to understand as much as possible and if i have questions ask you guys.
>>>(you guys are Awsome people!!)<<<
5) joshndroid mentions updating ROMS. erm, i think i need to read alot on this cos i dont understand it very well.
sorry.

think i am ready to install/flash just yet. i think it will take me a while to go over these guides and any other guides you think i should read.

Also remember.. You will have to wipe your phone clean when you do flash a new ROM. That means losing all of your apps, which means progress in games, etc. I personally just run stock. Should you do something like CyanogenMod 9 nightlies, you will only have to do a full wipe the first time. Every following nightly, just wipe the cache and dalvik, then flash the ROM. Re-flashing gapps isn't necessary with CM9 nightly to nightly updates, contrary to what was posted above.
Check my sig buddy.
I don't know if you're rooted or not.
But post 2 details actually installing a rom.
Just use the Toolkit bud, I believe it's version 6.1 by now. Took me all of about 15 minutes to go from a stock Nexus, to running AOKP with Franco's kernel. All thanks to the Toolkit and CWM. Good luck.

fastboot oem unlock, flash your recovery, flash your su binaries(supersu) OR flash your custom rom, boot up. thats pretty much it.
By the way, DO NOT USE TOOLKITS! A lot of people get their phone bricked because they used the toolkit.

I second the "no toolkits" idea. If you can't read the stickies of the forum you just posted a question in, then using the toolkit is a bad idea. If something goes wrong, you'll have no idea how to fix it. Learn how to do it manually, and then later use the toolkits as a shortcut.
Just don't use the toolkit.

This is all it takes.
I add more to it, if I may suggest. If one wants to just root, and there's not even the immediate need to have a custom recovery, simply just boot the recovery with fastboot, instead of flashing it, still being able to flash a su zip.

What they're getting at is that a toolkit shouldn't be used by someone who doesn't even have a basic clue as to what they're doing. There are prominent threads instructing the basics. If someone can't even be bothered to do any research, then they obviously aren't prepared to deal with the consequences should anything go awry.

Well there's only toolkit jailbreaks for iphones yet they know how to fix problems, when your phone soft bricks or whatever then people start searching an take the time to learn, whether you learn now or then makes no difference as I never seen a gnex hard bricked an you can always jump in with a toolkit first then learn later, you make out like if you use a toolkit your doomed with no option to learn later.

That's just poor logic. "Figure it out after it's broken". That doesn't really work. Once it's broken, people who don't know why it's broken or how to fix it tend to freak out. It's a little more difficult to learn while you're in a panic. Learn first. Then, if/when it breaks, you know what to check and have a pretty good idea of how to fix it.

Root Question

I’m still learning about my Galaxy Nexus, and I have been trolling XDA for a few days. Is there a way to root the device without flashing a custom ROM. My device already has JB, so I was looking to root for recovery, and SU. I just want to use some of my root apps, like Titanium Backup and SnakeS Battery Booster.
Thanks for the work you all do.

SnakeS battery booster is actually a rip off of DX battery booster from the play store which is the proper official version.

it is better to learn how to do it as you will be better able to fix the phone yourself if something happens
if the toolkit broke your phone, you wouldve created a thread and with something similar to this title: '[HELP] MY PHONE IS BRICKED'
with the body of the thread something like this: "i used such and such toolkit now my phone wont even boot! please help!"

[REF] efrant's "Android for Galaxy Nexus" 101 & FAQs
So what I have been reading...no matter which method I use, when I unlock the bootloader, it will reset the phone to factory. So I'm wondering the reset would be to ICS or JB?

The android version you're currently running. It just wipes the data partition (including /sdcard which in turn is a symlink of /data/media).
Cheers!
To answer your question, yes you can be rooted on stock rom and not use a custom rom.

no.
you have to unlock your bootloader (no matter which method you use, also, dont use a toolkit, use the sticky at the top of the forum) which wipes your data. period.

I did a root of my Galaxy Nexus, when I flashed the new 4.1. It did work fine. When the phone did the small update to 4.1.2, can it be true that it rolled back the root? My phone don't seem to be rooted anymore.
Isn't it possible to get root permissions again, without loosing data?

if your bootloader is unlocked, reflash the supersu.zip
otherwise, you have to unlock the bootloader and it will wipe your device.

Hep hep! The lock is unlocked. Perfect.
When I receive the 4.2 update (my phone is yakju), I will root again. Thank you for your help, I appreciate it a lot.
Similar thing happened to me. I was messing around with different ROM's for some time but in the end went back to the stock ROM. My phone now shows unlocked and using the stock recovery (as described here http://forums.androidcentral.com/google-samsung-galaxy-nexus/243004-recovery-mode.html).
The stock recovery offers 4 options: reboot, apply update from ADB or USB, wipe.
How do I "reflash the supersu.zip" from here? I want to avoid wiping as everything is set up as I like it now, and because it isn't rooted I can't back it up, catch 22 thing

Why did you bump a 4 months old thread?
Obviously, you need a custom recovery to flash a non-Google zip...

I'm sorry, I didn't know there was a rule against that. I searched Google for the problem and this thread came up closest.
Well sorry if I am not a genius like you who know everything already. I thought that forums like this was for asking questions.
It would be nice if instead of just being mean and nasty you'd offer some constructive suggestions, such as would installing a custom recovery wipe the phone? The distinction between the boot loader and the custom recovery isn't clear to me.

Sarcastic, aren't we? Look, XDA is first and foremost a developer site for developers to develop. Answering and asking questions about that development is only incidental. Members are expected to have read the rules of XDA and to follow them. That includes not bumping old threads, but it also includes an expectation that you will read the information readily available to you. Seeing the same common questions get asked daily, when there are good guides made specifically for this purpose, gets very old very fast. The constructive suggestion is to search and read. Guides abound both in the stickies and elsewhere, and the fact that you haven't found answers to your fairly common questions tells me that you either haven't made an effort to look, or you just don't understand and therefore probably shouldn't be messing with your phone.
I was able to root my gnex without wiping the data!
I dont know how it happened, but it happened, I was surprised too because I was really frustrated couldn't root it even after 10-15 tries ( I am a big time noob) and suddenly I unlocked the boot loader and rooted the phone without any loss of data, actually I was rooting because I had the VM100U something memory issue and my phone was terribly slow! I was surprised becasue i was expecting to copy all my files and crap one by one but now I have no issues

TAKJU or YAKJU???

Hi,
I want to root my Galaxy Nexus (T-Mobile) but the WugFresh root toolkit wants to know if my device is "TAKJU-MAGURO" or "YAKJU-MAGURO".
My settings don't mention either one: http://db.tt/SlNoG0Yi (screen shot)
How can I find it? I'm using the latest stock ROM from Samsung.
Thanks in advance...
Go into maps, check about, and it will list your make
root your maguro the right way.. fastboot OEM unlock, fastboot flash a custom recovery, flash either the su binaries or a custom ROM in your new recovery, reboot and profit. this is a nexus device, google made it easy for us to unlock our bootloader and root our devices.

There's an option on wugfresh that says yakju-takju any build, when you select your build use that instead, then wugfresh will automatically find what build your gnex is an select the right one for you, I had wugfresh toolkit 1.5.5 version which is the latest, I assume you do to.

you can type three words right? "fastboot OEM unlock" unlocks you bootloader. then the four words "fastboot flash recovery recoveryname.img" flashes your recovery. then in your recovery you just select your file that you want to flash, then reboot. hows that harder than Wugs? then when you mess up your device, you will be familiar how to fix it, with your recovery or fastboot.

That sounds way harder to me.

It's slightly harder but really great to know how to do in case you run into issues in the future. IMO a basic knowledge of fastboot is essential.

It seems a little intimidating at first, but with a little reading and patience it's not too difficult. I used a toolkit to root my Evo 4G and ended spending around 3 hours sorting out the problems it caused. I used the method simms22 is describing to root my GNex and even going slow it only took about 45 minutes. The biggest problem I had was getting drivers installed. Take a little time to read the stickies and get familiar with the process. I literally laughed at myself when I was finished and realized how simple those commands are.

No it's actually easier. Really, just open an adb/command prompt and just type what simms said. Really basic. BTW it will be good to learn this so u can get the CWMR Touch for free and flash it via fastboot.

If I have helped you.... hit that sexy thanks button. ^_^
As much as I would love to learn fastboot (really), I don't have the time, and now I'm scared of using WugFresh. I guess I will root my device another time.
Thanks for all the replies!

Nothing wrong with waiting until you are a bit more comfortable. Keep reading here at XDA. The more of that you are willing to do, the less scary it is. Check out the threads asking questions about problems. Even if you don't have the problem, you will be getting familiar with the terminology and problem solving methods.

It's definitely a little intimidating at first. For me the hardest part was getting the sdk set up properly (I'm sure the alcohol didn't help ) but now I can't imagine using a kit or a "1-click" method.

The truth is, I am an Android dev and quite comfortable with adb and the sdk. However I've never flashed a ROM or know anything about bootloaders, and only have one device to experiment with, which is my development device, and I can't take the chance of bricking it. The only reason I want to root right now is because I need to run an app that requires it (Screencast Video Recorder).
I wish I had another device to experiment with!

Agreed! Its terribly easy to install SDK from Google, Download a recovery, download the SU (superuser) and a ROM of choice and be done with it within 3 minutes. The one-click stuff is convenient but always ends up with more problems. One step out of place and you brick your phone. Furthermore, if you can't run a simple command line on your computer, should you really be rooting your phone? Just common sense man.

I'm perfectly comfortable at a command line but this "simple command" just seems easier to you because you're very experienced and you can make assumptions that I can't. For example you make "download a ROM of choice" sound so easy, but I wouldn't even know where to start to choose and then find the right ROM. (Besides, I only want to root my current ROM, not change ROMs).
I also have no doubt that "one step out of place and you brick your phone" applies as much to fastboot as it does to WugFresh. No?
Anyway, in my personal experience there is always critical information missing or major assumptions in the docs for custom mods (even the one-click WugFresh docs assumed I knew if my phone was takju or yakju. What the hell is a takju or wakju???). Incomplete docs seems to be the #1 complaint around here when modding.
I wish I knew fastboot as well as you guys, and maybe one day I will, but right now I just need a rooted phone so I can video capture my screen. And I can't risk bricking my only device.
Thanks again for the advice!
You're right about basic assumptions regarding a new user's level of knowledge. It was what made me the most nervous about rooting. If you are already familiar with adb and the command line interface you have a pretty good head start. In the stickies section, Jubakuba, efrant and mskip all have some great information and guides about rooting. Some of the information is a little outdated but worth the read. Start with efrant's Android 101. That will answer a lot of your questions. Oldblue also has a good summary of all of the different firmware versions (takju, yakju). Most of us appreciate that you aren't just diving in and making a mess. Very few us have the money to risk screwing up a several hundred dollar device for the sake of curiosity or experimentation. If you are developing you have even more reason to be cautious. So take your time. As far as bricking the phone goes, you're in luck. The GNex is intended as a developers device and is difficult (not impossible) to hard brick. You've already found your way here to XDA, now it's just a matter of reading and learning. And, I know it's difficult, but try not to let your feathers get ruffled. A thick skin seems to be a prerequisite around here.
