Best kernel to use with JB? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I'm running Jelly Bean on my Verizon GN with the kernel that came with it. Is there a better one I should be using?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2

I was using Fanco 216 For a while and it ran great I just flashed trinity Alpha 28 and i have heard good things about it, try one of those

Stock? Havn't found a kernel yet which doesn't lag for me atleast =] i dont mean extreme lag just little stutters that i didn't noticed when using stock

I've been happy with the GlaDos 2.0RC on JB so far..

I'm happy with the stock one for now.

trinity kernel, the way google wanted jellybean to be ran. here, experimental tab http://www.derkernel.com/jbtuna.php#

Franco 216 is easily the best

Stock. Had issues with franco.

Where can I get the stock version. I'm running the sprint version are you jelling rc1
sent from my SAMSUNG GALAXY NEXUS with ANDROID 4.1 JELLY BEAN

Stock. I tried some and they were horrible. Franko was always nice but on jb it made it ten times slower, i have never ever experienced so much lag before. Stock is fast, does not lag, gets nice battery consumption so why would you even consider tinkering around.

Stock. its the smoothest for me so far

Can anybody give Me a link for the stock kernel thanks in advance

Just like any 'what kernel should I use with _____' thread, answers will never be objective and will be based on individual results which will not necessarily be reproducible on every handset. There are already multiple threads asking what the best kernel is for 4.1.
Also:
1. Android 4.1 Jelly Bean has not been released. A developer preview does not count.
2. Android 4.1 Jelly Bean sources have not been released

I saw a link to the stock kernel in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1738018. It should work with any galaxy nexus variant, but as always, flash at your own risk and nandroid first.

Edit: correct. 4.1 kernel source was released. I missed it.

been running Lean kernel, and its my first "non-stock" kernel since flashing jellybean last week. gotta say I love it so far. great battery life, and just as smooth as stock as far as my use goes. I got 4 1/2 hrs of screen on time tody with it. on WiFi all day, but still happy

My feelings exactly... I have always been a Franko kernel user previously, but I found his JB kernel to be very choppy. I then went and reflashed the ROM(didn't know where to get the actual stock kernel from) so I could go back to the stock kernel and I am happy again! lol
But it really is a personal choice which depends a lot on what you individually want to do with your phone.

kernel source was released the same day that the google io attendies received JellyBean. since google released it, they legally have to provide kernel source according to the GPL. our kernel devs here all follow GPL as well, thats one of the requirements of xda to allow them to post their custom kernels. btw, source is where it always is. please dont insult our wonderful kernel developers.

Subject: [android-building] GPL components for the Jelly Bean preview
To: <[email protected]>
As usual, Android 4.1 ("Jelly Bean") contains a few components
licensed under the GPL or similar licenses. For the preview that was
just announced at Google I/O, the source code of those components is
available in AOSP.
The JFN53F platform components are tagged android-4.1_pre1 in their
respective projects. That's the version that Nexus 7 has in the box.
The JRN84D platform components are tagged android-4.1_pre2 in their
resepctive projects. That's the automatic update for both Nexus 7 and
Galaxy Nexus.
The SDK platform components are tagged android-4.1-sdk_pre1 in their
resepctive projects.
They are available with full source history. They are fully merged
into the master branch (except webkit). They all build on top of the
current AOSP master.
The Nexus 7 kernels are in the kernel/tegra project, under SHA-1
8dd2eab (in the box) and 55edff4 (the update). The Galaxy Nexus kernel
is in the kernel/omap project, under SHA-1 e8de0e2. They all have full
source history.

Yeah...sorry for the incorrect info. I've been checking since I was corrected, and my git was broken and not pulling the source for 4.1.

Android 4.04 available in ROMS but where is 4.03 OTA?

Hi,
I started seeing 4.0.4 available in some ROMS. I have been running 4.03 on AOKP for the past couple weeks, but where is the official release of 4.03 ??
I monitor this site every day: http://code.google.com/android/nexus/images.html
Why dows people flashing 4.04 and 4.03 here and there but Google dont release officially those builds??
Thanks.
4.0.4 isn't in any ROMs, modaco is a hybrid and CDMA might have some deodexed versions of 4.0.4
4.0.3 is tagged in AOSP, so we can build that. The only 4.0.4 ROMs will be for CDMA Galaxy Nexus AFAIK, and there can't be a source built 4.0.4 ROM until it is tagged and released in the AOSP tree.
4.0.3 was released on the Nexus S and found to have a few issues so it's been pulled. Because of that, it would appear Google thought twice about releasing it on their flagship dev phone so are holding off until they get a nice build - rumoured to be 4.0.5 but nothing confirmed so far
The latest OTA update is up to 4.02 only. All other versions are unofficial leaked/custom ROMs.

4.0.3 isn't leaked. It's in AOSP repo, yes it's in custom ROMs but you can compile a AOSP 4.0.3 only version as if it was a OTA.
just to underline what's already been said;
you can build 4.0.3 tag from aosp;
you can also build from aosp master branch: this is the bleeding edge branch of aosp. in other words, in terms of the android dev tree, master has all the latest fixes (and "features") of ics.
Sorry to come in all noob and stuff. Just a quick one, what's AOSP?? = /

"4.0.4 merged into build" vs true 4.0.4 AOSP builds

So, what's the difference between "4.0.4 merged into build" vs true 4.0.4 AOSP builds?
And the same question for kernels with "4.0.4 merged into build" vs true 4.0.4 kernels?
Will it get better when the devs are going to build from 4.0.4 source from the ground up?
Cuz until now I'm not really that impressed with the 4.0.3/4 "hybrid" builds (i.e. I find LiquidSmooth v1.2 a lot smoother/ faster/ better on battery than the AOKP b29 "4.0.4 merged" build)
Just curious
It means they moved their customizations to 4.0.4????
So if you are not impressed, it has nothing to do with their merges. It has to the do with the rom itself.

Thanks for your prompt answer
So - it's not the other way around, like they optimized their roms with implementing 4.0.4 optimizations?
You mean like Romanbb already took the 4.0.4 source and implemented his customizations?

Ok so, this is how we do it, usually. We have out own customized repos, and then we sync with AOSP. So everything is the current AOSP tree it is synced to, other than the customized repos.
What we do then, is diff our changes to the current 4.0.4 code and add them back, and then re-sync our customized repos.
Some roms sync from multiple sources. For example, AOKP syncs from AOSP, custom repos and Cyanogenmod. So if CM is not updated to 4.0.4, neither is aokp, to certain degrees (I am sure CM is).
I don't know about Liquid, but we (Team BAMF) sync directly and only from aosp and our own custom repos. We just finished the switch to 4.0.4.
So if you find Liquid better, its not to do with 4.0.4 and everything to do with the rom
Cheers mate, thanks for the insight it's very much appreciated
I just looked up your thread - when will your new 4.0.4 rom be up? I'll try it - I'm ready for a shift hehehe

There are some things in the work (besides 4.0.4) that need to be finished yet, but I would say it won't be much longer.

[Q] Project Butter

I'd been using ICS for several months, but a few days ago I decided to try JB (chilly's CM10) to see if it was stable enough. So far so good.
Since we don't have a proper Jelly Bean kernel for the Incredible 2, I'm guessing we don't get Project Butter. Is that right? As far as I can tell, the UI responsiveness in 4.1.2 JB is about the same as 4.0.4 ICS. It's not bad, but I don't really notice an improvement. Am I right about not having Project Butter, or do I have it but not notice it?
My kernel version is 2.6.35.14-ae-15, which I think is an aeroevan Gingerbread kernel.

here is are a few links to 4.2.2 ROM's with the hacked chinese 3.0 kernal. I've been on Evervlov for the past couple weeks and its pretty stable. I just flashed.

Oh, interesting! I didn't know devs had already started releasing ROMs based on that Chinese kernel. Still, didn't HTC release that kernel for ICS rather than JB, and if so wouldn't that still mean no Project Butter?
I guess what I'm wondering is how much Project Butter depends on having a kernel that's been tuned for Jelly Bean, updated drivers, etc. If the 3.0.16 Chinese kernel allows Project Butter to work, that's pretty cool!
Ugh, OK project butter has nothing to do with the kernel
It comes with jellybean
And that 3.0 kernel both with chilly's roms and ever evervolv is one that preludrew hacked up or ported and its an aosp, no one has built any ROMs with the Chinese kernel yet.
Bry is building a flash able zip with the new kernel as we speak and even then it's just going to

Anyone else feel JB was still the "best" version for GNEXUS?

Anyone else feel JB was still the "best" version for GNEXUS?
I've been a flash addict since I got the phone. Always going for the experimental, nightly builds and such.
However, I am getting tired of my gnexus lagging, and slowing down randomly. I've always felt 4.1 JB was very responsive and good memory management for my phone. anyone feel the same way?
4.1 has been the only version of Android I've not had any issues with and I'm still running today.
I think people just get to caught up on having/running the latest/greatest Android version, when really our GN was made to run perfectly on JB 4.1.
4.2 was made for N4
4.4 for N5
If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

Mine came with 4.2 so will give 4.1 a try. Battery life was not good with stock 4.2 but better with fancy kernel or any of the newer ROM.
I tried CM11, Avatar, Slim, PA, Vanir and others.

I don't think any particular Android version is "made" for a device in particular.
Yes, Jelly Bean originally debuted on the 2012 Nexus 7 and the Nexus 4 saw the next major update but that doesn't mean that Android still can't run on any other device provided that the kernel and ROM are optimized for it. Those devices were just test/reference devices for development.
I have cyanogenmod Kitkat on my device and it runs as good (or better) than stock Jelly Bean.
It's like Windows 8. It runs good on some PCS, whereas on others it lags a bit.
Software is software and to the device it's all the same.
I'm also trying this theory ATM, will upgrade to a new phone soon but 4.4 has really been really slow after a while on my Gnex, even after converting to f2fs..
In other news, I now need to post in general discussion until I have enough posts to post in development so here goes.

i'm running omni on my toroplus now 4.4.4 and i would have to say this is much better than the stock roms (i've ran 4.1/4.2/4.3) and they all work, but i really dig the 4.4 only camera from google and i'm a version junkie...
i did try just stable releases from CM all the way back to 4.1.2 but couldn't get random things working and didn't feel like taking the time...
so far, between working 4g/3g handoff's, more stable wifi, access to the latest apps that need 4.4 (camera is the only one that comes to mind) i'll run omni...still hoping that the awesome kernel guys will get 3.4 working and we can move to android L for some of that awesome battery life

Um, "Project butter" was introduced with JB 4.1. I know everyone was after that on their ROMs...
The best Android versions for the Galaxy Nexus are definitely 4.1 and 4.3 final releases. The problems with 4.4.x that finally made me ditch it are the unfixed radio issues and subsequent battery drain. I've heard that some roms such as Dirty Unicorns, Omnirom, and Slimkat have this fixed, or at least the radio cutout issue. My favorites though that give me good battery, performance, and features are 4.1.2 LiquidJB and 4.3.1 Vanir, the latter being my daily driver.

Android 4.4 Rom? AOKP possibly

Hi, I'm sorry if this is not the spot to post this but i am looking for an android 4.4 rom for my verizon galaxy nexus. I want to use AOKP but they took down the 4.4 rom for this phone and it bums me out as i also want to use franco kernal and AOKP was the only rom that supported it. I wanted to either use AOKP or and old version of Cyanogenmod and LineageOS only has version 13 of their roms and i think they are Android 6.0. I have had performance issues on anything Android 5.0 and higher and Android 4.2.2 Official release no longer supports some of the apps that i use. Any help would be nice as Android 4.4 is kinda the sweet spot for this phone and I had the same issue with my Droid Razr. Found an old Cyanogenmod android 4.4 rom for it and its perfect. Any help would be nice. Thank you!

So whats the difference with Tune and toro? sometimes i see it called tuna and other times toro????
There were three main variants of the GNex. The US carrier-specific ones were toro and toroplus, while the rest of the world were all maguro (despite there being many different model numbers). All three are subsets of tuna. The various custom ROM communities have tried to unify their builds as much as possible, so even where final builds are still separate, a lot of what's inside them is generic tuna.

Yep. Emphasis on "should", of course (as with any custom ROM - sometimes even with stock  ).

Good to know thanks. Which room would you recommend for 4.4?

No idea, sorry. I went from stock 4.3 to LineageOS 13 (equivalent to 6.0.1) late last year because of the Krack and BlueBorne exploits. It's my only phone, and until I get another I have no wish to switch to something else. (My usage is pretty light, so I just put up with the occasional reboot.) In hindsight, I probably should have checked out the 4.4 possibilities, but LOS was the best known custom ROM, so that's what I chose.

I currently use a Droid turbo but have a Droid razr and want to have a galaxy nexus both on KitKat in case I need to use either. I have a Droid Maxx but I broke the volume buttons on it. I had them fixed but they can break again and I just don't want to take the risk. Also because I broke them I won't be selling the phone.
