Infuse car dock modification - Galaxy S III Accessories

I was uncomfortable on how close the usb connector sat with the S3 installed in the Infuse car dock. You could actually scratch the S3 bezel if you weren't careful inserting the phone into the dock. This is because the bottom of the Infuse is flat and the S3 is rounded, it makes the S3 sit ever so slightly closer to the usb connector. I took apart the dock and lengthen the "channel", trimmed the retention plate, and removed the middle retention clip that holds the rear cover on. End result is it opens up about 1.0-1.5mm more then normal making ample clearance for the S3
Attached are pictures of the modified dock..

How hard was it to remove the sliding part from the rest of the dock? I am planning to take it apart soon (after my microUSB extension cable comes in) but didnt want to try it until I knew the cable worked. It seems like it would just pop off, but I didnt want to apply too much force yet.
I just need the bottom part to maintain charging and audio out. I plan on hiding it under the dash and just using the extension cable.
Appreciate the info.

Getting the back cover off without breaking it is a bit tricky. There aren't any screws at all and is held in by only clips. I used two really small flay head screwdrivers and popped it up using the location of the Infuse speaker hole. I then wedged in a hobby knife it and used it to pry up all the edges until the rear popped off. Once off you'll need a #00 Philips screwdriver to remove the screws holding the retention plate on.
Here are some more pics of the modifications.
First pic: Lengthen channel and trimmed retention plate
Second pic: This is how much it opened with out any mods.
Third pic: This is how much it opens after the mods.

Good work, I've taken this apart before on the D710 mount I used previously for my Skyrocket and before I got an Infuse mount for the SIII since everyone was raving about them, but I also noticed that it was a little too close for comfort.... I've just been very careful putting it in, but as much as I drive, it's not something I'll be able to protect every time, so I know what my quick little Sunday project will be today!

I also flipped the Samsung logo around

Feel free to use any of these steps I made for the D710 dock modifications I did in order to get a Skyrocket to fit, it may help others with the disassembly of the back portion in order to get to the screws and the sliders:

Thanks for the tip! I couldn't get the screws loose, so I carefully dremeled the retention bracket in place. Works like a charm!

I know what you mean...I had to go to the hardware store to buy a #00 screwdriver to get off the screws! I thought about doing exactly what you did, both will work.

happened to get mine moments ago.... anyone care to explain how to get the back part off exactly? I know you said two clips but where do I pry?
-also, how was the Samsung plate turned around? Already modding it, might as well do that!
EDIT: I GOT IT! -and will try to make a video!
Still interested in the Samsung plate though. tried same method with that and couldn't get it

Clip locations in attached pic.
To flip the Samsung logo around you have to get it off obviously. I used a single sided razor blade to pry it up. Then you have to trim two tabs off the back, you'll know which two when you try to put it back on.

I did NOT say pry it from the headphone jack.
I said:

Which is the rectangular hole.

yeah, i got that after pulling my head from my @&# and actually trying. Started from the sides and worked around. Not too bad. All I used was razor and screwdriver. Tried the Samsung plate and snapped the razor, lol.
So I just noticed your "dock" part doesn't have any writing on it. Mine says "LOCK" with a triangle showing to slide it up. odd...

haha...waiting for someone to notice that I scratched the front surface trying to pry open the back so I sanded down the front with 2,000 grit sandpaper. I was going to buffing it back to be polished but ended up liking the matte finish. The finish looks better in person than in the pic because a flash was used...the finish sort of matches the Pebble Blue's texture.

any chance of modding it to fit it with a slim case? someone mentioned heat gun in another thread to expand it a little. thoughts?

Lanyard for Samsung i19100

Sorry for noobie Q, but would someone be so kind to video how to insert the Lanyard in the eyelet before I pull out the drill to make another hole?
Take off the back cover, put the wire through the hole in the casing, use something small (like a needle/paperclip) to put the wire around the pin.
That's it?
A quick question.
Where did you get the lanyard from?

Oh! I thought this thread mentioned some cool lanyards for GSII !!!
krussel do some nice looking and hard wearing ones. I have the stainless metallic one.
my only gripe is the positioning of the lanyard hole on the phone. I think it should be on one of the bottom corners rather than on the top. It has to be held out of way when texting or surfing in portrait mode. Otherwise it can annoyingly swing over the screen when phone is in use.

Loose Battery Door Cover?

Is the battery door cover on anyone's G2 loose? I mean, it used to be a nice tight fit when I first got it, but now after owning it since its release date is seems to be just loose enough to annoy the hell out of me. It doesn't rattle but it slides back & forth just a little bit, maybe a couple millimeters worth. Just curious if this happens to anyone else's G2, and if so what did you do to make it stop doing that.
Thanks.

does it fall out? if it dosent, you can try to put something inbetween the gap so the door has no space to move

No, it doesn't fall off the phone at all, it's in there pretty good. It slides up & down parallel to the phone itself, so when I'm holding it it just doesn't feel secure (IMO).
Had that problem long ago, it was caused by the phone lock not the cover. I had a replacement and it was locking perfectly again

Hand Lanyard and Drop Test (with video!)

I recently picked up a cheap, generic lanyard for use with the Note and have found that it completely changed the way I hold and use the phone. It makes holding the phone a lot more comfortable and allows for full single hand usage of the phone. Also, I have done some drop tests and it pretty much drop-proofs the phone (linked below is a video of a drop test I did). I HIGHLY recommend getting one of these, if only for the increased flexibility it gives you when using it single-handed.
How it Helps Single-Handed Use
Because the lanyard I got has a clip on it I am able to detach the lanyard part of it and just have a little “tail” of sorts on the phone. I almost always have this tucked between my middle and ring finger when holding the phone, as it allows me to comfortably hold the phone without needed to support it from the bottom of the phone with a finger. It is hard to explain, so I took a video of it (linked below). This manner of holding the phone means that the ONLY part of the hand that needs touch the phone is the middle and ring fingers on the center of the back plate of the phone. The traction from the skin on the back plate keeps it from moving left/right, gravity keeps it from moving up, and the string connecting the bottom of the back plate to the tips of my middle/ring fingers keeps it from falling. It basically feels like the phone is floating in your hand when holding it like this. It allows you not only to comfortably hold it and use your thumb, but use both your thumb and index finger for zooming and panning as well! And, if you tilt the phone in your hand, you can reach ANY part of the screen with your thumb. You can manipulate the phone however you like, by doing this, without fear of dropping it because the string is firmly between the two fingers.
(This video is in HD so you can press the 720P button and make it fullscreen to see more)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QMQ32JT3Uk8
Drop-Proofing
The video shows it the best but you can drop the phone however you want and it will be caught by the lanyard every time. The back plate is fit so securely into the phone that it does not budge, not a single clip of the back plate has come undone in any of my tests (and in one of my tests I flung it around in a circle on the end of the lanyard). Quite amazing really, defeats the need for an OtterBox for me.

Hopefully the linked photo below illustrates it more clearly. I simply tuck the lanyard attachment between my middle and ring finger and it holds the phone.

I too use a lanyard, but have mine attached to the flip case back (also at the speaker hole).
Firmly pulling the flap away from the lanyard, and nothing happens. It's not coming off by accident.
BTW... I have a much smaller lanyard with nice leather detailing. Without ever consciously thinking about it, I have gotten into the havit of leaving the lanyard dangling out of my pocket, and my hand subconsciously goes through the lanyard every time I take the phone out of my pocket.
I plan on using a Nillkin TPU case which has strap holes and an SGP Asturias leather handstrap on my imaginary Note. I say imaginary because it's all just an idea, I might get one, I might not. The dev community is so good for the SGS2 that I'll just miss having so many options and tweaks.
@unsinkable can u post some pictures
I did this exactly, sturdy at first but I kind of have the feeling that plastic grill will break some day.
Still better than having the whole phone break after a fall tho.
Not having included a proper lanyard hook like in SGS2 was a huge shortcoming for note designers. SGS2 had the con of an unproperly placed lanyard in the top part of the phone, but still!
I'm finding it rather difficult to get my lanyard's string through my speaker phone grill.
It is in fact hard, the typical lanyard end-cords are thicker than the space avaialble in the grill, but if you push attentively enough, or use the help of a tiny object like a de-tipped needle, to push the loop in the middle for you, it is then pretty easy to do the job.

Hmm just remove the back plate first and then tuck it in and out?
broke mine.
My lanyard broke the little bar behind the speaker.
I personally don't think much force was used to make this happen.
It didn't break it off completely, just one side. So I pushed it back in, so that cosmetically it looks ok -but I certainly can't attach a lanyard on it again.
I'll have to find a case/shell with a lanyard loop.
Incidentally, does anyone know if it's possible to get a replacement back panel?

When you say jack, are you referring to the plastic flap covering the port…?
If yes, then not the audio jack, but I have replaced the USB / Charging jack as it was cracked. Basically I ordered the new flap from this website – www.rounded.com
Then I pulled out the broken one and inserted the new flap – well I tried inserting it myself but didn’t have the right tool. So went to a normal phone repair shop and they inserted the new one for me free of cost in a few seconds. You might need a pointed but maybe blunt object to insert the rubber thingy attached to the flap into the socket.
Hope this helps.
Thank you for helping me! I mean the flap yes. I have tried to pull it out, but should I pull harder? It's kinda stuck, and I was afraid to snap the string. Now I can give my phone a prolonged life.

Yes, it is a bit hard to pull out. But in my case yes - I just pulled harder and the string did snap! It left behind a part of the original rubber string inside the socket I think.
However the replacement flap that I ordered had a much smaller string, so it was easy to insert it back into the same socket, where a part of the old string was left behind.
Good luck.
Thank you. Thinking of using pliers at the bottom of the string. Maybe it wont snap then.

Pictures. Or, it didn't happen...
Received the parts today. Changed the USB and audio cover. Used angeled tweezers, and managed to get out all of them by pulling and moving the tweezers downwards when the string stretched. Used the tweezers to insert them too.
Now I got two more years of use.

Do you have the charging dock and a bluetooth headset?
That removes the need to [almost] ever open the flaps right?
Charging dock, but not a bluetooth headset. Don't know why the gasket on the audio jack cover fell off since I seldom use a headset. The USB cover gasket was worn because of all that use of Flashtool.

Replacement screen , broke my phone!

Hello,
I have been loving my 7x but dropped it the other day and shattered the screen. Phone still works fine but I want to fix it, obviously. I am looking for somewhere to get a new screen/digitizer or maybe just the glass. I have seen some on ebay but don't want to wait a month to get it here to the USA. Anyone know where I might be able to find something closer? I am also going to try Honor but don't know if they will sell me just the parts.
Thanks for any help
Honestly, buying the part off Ebay is your best bet. I shattered the screen on my 7X as well. Replacement came within a week, shipped from California. Honor wanted like $150 for service lol. Not worth it. Plus, I heard they take forever with service. Check this part out, this is the one I got. It is tough to get apart but heating up the edges with a hair dryer helped. As long as you removed the screws at the bottom it should come apart with some effort.

Through Honor
Did you change just the glass or the digitizer too? I ordered a replacement with the digitizer. Is it difficult to swap out? Any videos on how to do this easily? Not my first time doing this but first time with this phone. I want to tear it down the least possible. Thanks.
screen and digitizer is in one piece. it's not hard. I just did my wife's phone for the 2nd time.
remove sim tray
Two screws on the bottom next to usb port. Remove them.
pry on bottom corner and work your way up the side to loosen. Pull apart bottom then work your way up.
Do not pull back off too hard as finger print sensor is attached.
Follow finger print ribbon cable to to phone and metal plate, remove screw holding plate in place. Pop off finger print cable from motherboard. (ribbon cable next to it is the screen cable.)
Pop off screen cable
bottom of phone should be black speaker. Four screws hold it in place. upper left screw also holds in a metal plate.
pry speaker out as there is double sticky tape holding it in place.
Would suggest putting a suction cup on screen. If screen is already cracked, put tape on screen to keep it together.
Now the fun part. Grab a hair dryer or heat gun and heat up the screen around the edges from the front of the phone.
Apply gentle pressure to suction cup to pull screen from phone.
Once screen is removed, clean up glue/double stick tape and apply new tape.
Reverse process to put back together.
