The GameKlip™ - Galaxy S III Accessories

The new GameKlip™ is here! I started a new thread to keep things organized. Check it out here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2027611
Hello again everyone! I just launched an accessory for the Galaxy SIII (and other android phones) that you guys might be interested in! I've always loved playing games on my smartphones, but on screen controls were always frustrating. When I discovered the Sixaxis App, and native usb host and controller compatibility with the SIII, I had to figure out a good way to attach my phone to the controller. I came up with the GameKlip™.
I am a university student, and long time xda member. I've been tinkering with this project in my spare time and am now ready to produce them. I hope you guys like it! Let me know what you think!
More information and ordering info available here: http://thegameklip.com/ Starts at $15!!
Update: I shot another quick video showing how strong the GameKlip™ is. Take a look!
Update2: I have replaced the photos of the Galaxy S3 GameKlip™ with a cleaner, more accurate, representation of the final GameKlip™ (still hand cut). Its actually the same one I used in the video above! I have no issues pressing the buttons. The final version has the tabs moved up a little as well to accommodate for the bottom curve on most phones
Update3: I added a lot more information to my website. Check it out!
Update4: I just took some new photos of the production model! Notice the smooth cuts and plenty of room to press all the buttons. I have also updated the first image above.

haha I use it with a battery pack like the Tylt Powerplantl if I'm worried about running the battery dead. Endless gaming! Surprisingly though, I played a couple hours of GTA and still had quite a bit of battery left.

This is exactly what I've been looking for! Unfortunately now it means I'll need an extra battery or 2

Looks awesome. once a video goes up ill probably get one.

This looks very cool! Good job, good luck and thanks in advance for taking my money.

I would love this... unfortunately, sixaxis isnt compatible with sgh-999 (tmob s3)

I tried Kickstarter, but they rejected the idea unfortunately hopefully I can get the word out there on my own! They're available for pre-order on my site for $15

ordered it, cant wait

Thats funny..cause I think this is a great looking product.
can't say how much I appreciate innovative people...and not just innovative people..but innovative people that take action.

Patent this tech before apple steals it and sues you!!!!!!!!!!

I'm looking at the pictures of this device and I don't see how it is secure? it is just molded hard plastic in the general width of the phone. The plastic touching the phone is smooth. There is no tensioning device to squeeze the sides. i imagine if i put my phone in it and tipped it past level the phone would fall right out. Thats probably why that phone and hand that is "holding it upside down" is cut and pasted out of its original surroundings. I would imagine that it didn't get picked up by Kickstarter because they know it will be the cause of many a broken phone. Sorry to be a downer.

The phone isn't cut and pasted in the balcony picture. I held the phone with one hand and took the picture with the other I used a fill flash to light the controller, which may be throwing you off.
The material itself has a little spring to it and is molded to be just a hair thinner than the phone. The tabs hold it very securely. I can hold mine upside down with my S3 and shake it without anything coming lose or falling off.

I was looking all around for a clip with no success. Even tried to talk a Gamestop worker to give me their display clip! Found this the other day but seems so un elegant. http://imgur.com/a/sRiLs Thought about epoxying a case to the controller, but glad I found the GameKlip before I went that route.
Hey Ryan when do you think you'll start shipping? Good luck brother, I'll be spreading the word.

Thank you! I put 2 to 3 weeks on my website to be safe, but hopefully I'll be able to ship much sooner! And thank you for helping spread the word! I tried posting something over at AndroidCentral and got perma-banned for it. Oh well, xda is better anyway

Ha ha, I just posted it over there in the Accessory section.

Why did kickstarter reject you?
And it looks like it works even with a case on right

Would you be able to make one for the xbox controller?
I just hate using the ps3 controller.

Wide/Macro Lens for the Evo

Some of you might already know about this, but I just read an article that talks about a set of macro/wide lens that's compatible with the Evo. From the picutrestaken with it, it looks pretty terrific.
Sample shots here: http://www.goodandevo.net/2010/06/review-magnetic-macro-lens-for-htc-evo-4g.html
Can be purchased here: http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.14953
Already bought mine, will let you guys know what quality is made of. Will post pics.

Please do. I'd like to see what kind of photos can be taken with that wide angle lens, even if I have to hold it up while taking the shot.
i'm interested to see how your dealings with dealextreme go. i've never even heard of them
They are good but shipping usually takes 3 weeks. I have a jewelers eyepiece that does the same thing as these macro lenses. The one I have is only 1.5x you can buy then at 10x and more. You can buy them for a penny on ebay:

Dang, that sucks to hear. I was hoping it would be a strong enough magnet to stay at least somewhat firmly attached. I guess you can't expect too much for something that wasn't specifically designed for the Evo.
In any case, it's cool though!
Pictures look fantastic. If anyone gets this let me know how it goes I am so close to pulling the trigger its only ten bucks....
yeah, i went ahead and bought it last night too. i figured 10 bucks...no big whoop. i've thrown away that much just in old produce last week, lol

Quite simply is there a reason not to love their weird selection of products. I've bought so much stuff from them that I have NEVER been able to find anywhere else. I think this company is great.
Looks like fun!
I placed my order, not to worried if they dont stick on there perfectly, they are fairly cheap, do the eyeglass pieces stick to the Evo as well or were those pics taken while holding it in place?
Did anyone find the red macro lens that was in the pictures from engadget?
so, has anyone received one that they've ordered yet? mine says it is 'in packaging'....lord only knows how long that is going to take...
Timothy. I have been a client of them for more than 2 years. No one will receive theirs until 2 weeks or more.

I went and got a walmart money card to get these things but paypal isnt liking it so i guess ill just have to wait til my new check card comes in the mail to order. Hoping i get as good of shots that engadget showed.

expect to wait a bit, that's why shipping is free and it's so cheap. probably 1.5-2 weeks, as that's what happened when i bought a cheap fling monkey scream toy from them last year. that being said, at this price it's still pretty sweet.
on a side note, can anyone recommend any of the ones from that first amazon link? i'd prefer to have it shipped quicker and pay for higher quality if it's reasonable. thanks in advance!

All I did was put the camera right over top of the jewelers lens. The macro shots are more of a novelty for a camera phone. I've always known about this and maybe tried it out 3 times tops on cell phones. Like I said you can buy the jewelers lenses for a penny on ebay, and they are much higher quality and you can pick the magnification.
Theres a product called jelly lens that does the same thing as this except it uses like silly putty or something around the ring to stick instead of using a magnetic ring

Armbands for vibrant?

Anybody have a recommendation? Right now I go for a run with my ipod shuffle (the one with a clip) and a stopwatch and when I'm done I check my distance on google maps. I don't want to spend the money on a fancy gps watch so I'd love to use my phone to take the place of the three things I use now.
I would like one that is going to give the phone some protection from sweat and the elements and preferably be able to use the screen while the phone is in the band.
Edit 9/24/10: Got my armband from here http://cgi.ebay.com/C6-Sports-Armba...178137?pt=PDA_Accessories&hash=item1c152a4d59 yesterday in the mail and ran with it today for the first time. For $7 it's not bad. I can press the power button through the material and use the screen though it's awkward to do so on my arm. I can't really get the volume buttons to work very well though. Biggest problem was the GPS, mine works fine if I'm in a car moving quickly but at running speeds it drifts around pretty bad. I ran 5.5 miles and My Tracks says I did 6.8 and gained 19k feet of elevation, lol. I'm going to try something meant for running and see if works any better.
Anyway the band itself is pretty much awesome for what I paid but if I saw one made for the vibrant that I could use the buttons through easier I'd probably get one.
maybe something like this
http://www.iarmbands.com/Arm-Band-for-Samsung-Galaxy-S-captivate-vibrant-fascinate-LAB-002.htm
Offtopic: what part of the 801 are you from?
Pretty much. You used that? I'd love to know if someone had tried one before I buy but if not I'll get one and report back.
I live near trolley square.
Edit: where is k town? Kaysville? Kearns?
no i havent used it....that was one of the better ones that i could find that you described.
Yeah I live by Jordan Landing on the Kearns side.
Yeah from what I've seen that looks pretty good. If I don't get any recommendations I'll probably pick that up tomorrow.

Tried this..... not bad but not great.
I have a generic one and the biggest problem I have is unlocking the phone to do anything with it. My G1 was super easy since it was on the front, but since its on the hard its rather hard to push and use.
I have the belkin armband for my ipod touch. Check it out, if its something your interested in I'll run out to my truck and grab it and see how it fits and let you know.
Found thise while trolling ebay for deals.

........which is why this one is being sold as a Vibrant case. If you look at the pic it shows an iphone in the case. It's cheap though so that is a bonus.
Ok no problem, I'm going to run out and burn one and grab it and see how it fits. Will bum someone elses phone to snap some pics for you so keep an eye out.
I got one from KMART. cheap....effective. It is made for the IPOD but I have run with it a lot using the sweetest training app out there....Endomondo and I have never had any problems with it even slipping loose at all.
Well it didn't go so well. While outside I put my vibrant into the armband case and it fit, although I did have to stretch the silicon case a bit as the size difference was greater then I had thought it would be. But it did fit. So I brought it inside and removed it to take photos. Then put it back in and the case ripped. Now I think this may or may not be a belkin case, I can not remember, but I did get it at walmart. Its worth looking into but be aware that constant removing and reinstalling will shorten the life. I have had this thing for a couple years and it has seen alot of abuse at the gym, while running, and while doing yard work so I'm sure it was already near the end of its life anyways. The pic is crappy cause I was taking it with the forward facing camera on a android tablet I'm playing with.

Lol. It's ordered so it should be here in a few days and I'll let you know what I think.
How are you guys addressing the fact that the lock button is on the side of the phone? Meaning how are you accessing it to start, stop and pause your work outs if the screen is off?
Well on the ipod one I jacked up, the volume rocker and power could be activated through the stretched silicon sides. Too bad it didn't work out.

I PROMISE TO TITLE EVERY POST WITH CAPS-LOCK ON, and I will use a minimum of 14 exclamation points!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BTW- love the custom firmware Task650. Best one I've used, especially when paired with pershoot's kernel.

+1 to that, when they ran out of the clip case and were waiting to get new ones in, he made sure mine got shipped asap so I could receive it before I left the country. Looks like I've got another case to purchase lol.
@Pyro,
If you read this, i have a question for you. What are the chances of you having any say in the design process of these cases? I would love to get a hybrid clip/360 version that doesn't need that elastic band to stay closed. I am gonna get the new one anyways, but I was just wondering.
Thanks for the awesome cases

Just ordered . 2 - 5 weeks ahaha luckily I'm not in a rush for it.
I got this case before going to europe. Its been 2 weeks so far and its been pretty good. The only issue i have is that the groove farthest from the binding doesnt hold the tab up. My tab always falls down immediatley even on a flat even surface.

The groove closest to the binding works for landscape and portrait modes. It happens to be the groove i want to use most of the time so it is acceptable to me
Pyro ships fast! I ordered the 360 case last Monday by personal check and in today's (sat) mail was the case. Been playing around with it and I must say that it is a solid case. I researched for a long time and Tasks video review convinced me. I bought the tab for its slim design and weight compared to other tegra 2 tablets. The case feels very light before you put the tab in it. IMO even with the case on it, I believe it is still lighter than my wife's ipad 1 or my friends xoom. I love that you can charge it with the case on it. I have three cats that think my computer desk is a good place to take a nap. Now I will never have to worry again. Price is amazing. The case and shipping to NY was under $24. I wasn't ever going to get a case for my tab, liked the feel and weight, but I had a couple close calls carrying it or just holding it under my arm if I had other things to carry. Overall, very satisfied!
As far as tab not staying in farthest groove, if you use the stretchy band that holds the case closed for travelling and just slide it up over the bottom lip of the case it should hold it in place in that last groove. Works for me anyways.

Sadly, for me it has not arrived yet. I'm going to see how long this takes. But so you know.. I am in Toronto Canada.. so it'll be a little longer with customs and stuff
Just received the 360 yesterday. I couldnt be happier... the case is extremely well made. The tab stays up in every position, and the tab fits very well into the case and it doesnt add to much bulk. As someone else mentioned i wish they had a hybrid between the 360 and the clip, not a deal breaker just not a big fan of the elastic band that keeps the case closed. Just a tad bit of ocd on my end the hole on the back side of the case doesnt bother me, but i wish that the samsung logo was lined up in the center of the hole All in all great case and fast shipping
Ordered mine this morning and they shipped it this afternoon. That is service. Can't wait to get home and hopefully it will be there by Friday
Ordered one last night. *waits by the door*

Flygrip

Hey guys, I was browsing through some threads and stumbled upon this curious contraption called Flygrip. It's like a brace that you slip your finger through that you put on the back of the phone. It improves more stability and allows easier access to the screen because you don't have to fully grip the phone. This is probably useful especially with the Nexus because it has a rather large screen.
Anyone have any experience on this? I'm thinking of buying one and trying it out because it looks really handy.

I dunno. I think it would make it more awkward with one hand and 2 handed isn't needed.
I like the direction their going though. Creative thinking.
Galaxy Nexus - 4.0.3 CM9
Asus Transformer - 3.2 Revolver
A creative product, but ultimately more hassle than it's worth. A phone case will protect it from falls; this product reduces the likelihood of drops but does nothing for you if you do.
And you have to remember to carry around your phone and this Flygrip. And you'll constantly be answering the question, "what's that?"
maybe everyone has small hands but i dont seem to have a problem only using 1 hand

What if you stick it on to your phone case?
I guess you could, but that seems cumbersome... You'd have a bulge in your pocket for sure, and then you'd be dealing with a whole new set of questions...
I wish there was a vote up button.. I just thank people that I think are witty
In terms of the product.. I do agree it would bring a slew of questions and I'm not sure how much help it would actually be.. guess I should try it before I say anything negative though.
A perfect example of a solution for a problem that doesn't exist.
Can't wait for the follow up product that allows you to strap a phone to your face so you don't miss that important message.

Actually, I think this is pretty cool. While it certainly isn't necessary, it looks actually pretty useful. I just ordered one for myself. I have smaller hands and the gNex has been a bit of a challenge lately since I can't text or browse one handed anymore. It comes with a free case (they're getting a batch of gNex cases in next week) so I'm going to attach it to the case or maybe just put it on one of the other cases I ordered. Oh and if you wan't free shipping, use the code "IDIOT".
I can't tell if your post was one long setup to a snarky punchline, or if "idiot" is an actual discount code.
The world may never know.

I'd like to think its a piss take, but you never know maybe some people out there don't have the benefit of opposable thumbs and have a need for something like this.

lol, sorry for sounding snarky. I totally didn't mean it to come out that way although that's definitely how it reads. "IDIOT" actually is the discount code. I found it by googling it (http://sideshownetwork.tv/category/shows/iotw).
I really did order this so as silly as it may appear to be, I don't mind being a guinea pig. I'll post my thoughts on it and the gnex case when it arrives hopefully next week sometime.
it does look interesting, altho useless.
apple brand it, and they've got themselves a winner.
I just wanted to bump this thread. I just put in an order for one after being on the fence for a while and will let you guys know how it is!

That review kinda pushed me over the edge and with that "IDIOT" code (it gave me option to choose Next-Day shipping...for free), I was down to check it out.
Looks ghetto as hell but seems pretty functional since I always have problems reaching around the screen with one hand. I wouldn't mind getting one to try but getting it internationally shipped would probably add even more to the already steep price...

You had me interested until I saw the price. $30 is way too much for what it does.
i picked one up out of curiosity... i like it. it's nice to be able to reach everywhere with your thumb and not have to reposition or oddly balance your phone. gimmicky ? yeah, kinda. will it become a must have on my phone ? i dunno, still getting use to the feel and i need to adjust the position of it a bit. there isn't a way to temporarily fit it in order to know exactly where you need to mount it so it's kinda trial and error for what's most comfortable. i ordered a couple spare mounting pads so i can dial it in then see how i like it.
they should cut down on the bells and whistles packaging and sell it for 8 bucks, that's what i see the retail value of something like this. i think they'd easily sell 5x the amount for 1/3 the price.

Bam!
Very cool product. My main hesitation of using something like this, is the fact that it's a "permanent" fixture on your phone - unless you sacrifice a case and adhere the fly grip to it.
My second problem is the price. $30?? I would have thought no more than $5...

Okay now that thing really is useless. What's wrong with a bluetooth headset lol. "You have to hold the phone"? Doesn't this guy have a pocket?

I guess you could buy a spare battery door and stick it to that.

PS3 Controller: My phone mount mod

First post, thought I'd make it some what useful! After playing around with a PS3 controller on the S3 it became pretty obvious that some form of phone holder would be required. The GameKlip was ideal but inc postage to the UK was far too much for me to consider spending. So I decided to make my own mount and share it with you guys for a bit of inspiration.
The only real cost was the cheap £2 case from eBay, as the other materials were lying around scrap.
The aim was to keep the mount simple, lightweight and not alter the centre of gravity too much.
The mount consists of a wire frame made from a welding rod bent into shape using a vice and mole grips. It is designed to be held in place via two screw holes on the base and lightly pinches the middle of the controller.

A small steel plate (not the lightest of metals but it was lying around!) was then soldered onto the wire frame and spray painted glossy black to match the controller; this would provide a larger surface area to attach a case to.
The frame was then stuck to a sturdy plastic phone case with some super strong double sided tape (used on cars).
The phone mount was so simple to make I had time to make a second one for the other half and so far they have been great to use. Not as great as the GameKlip of course, but a lot cheaper!
Just thought I'd share it with you guys incase anyone need inspiration for their own mounts; any thoughts or feedback would be great too.

that looks neat. i dont think my thumbs can reach the screen. do you have large thumbs? just messing with u. do you have a problem with counterweighing the phone and the controller?

Ha, I must have large thumbs. The height between the controller and phone had to be there unfortunately, so I can reach the triangle and up buttons underneath. The S3 is so brilliantly light there is not really any extra pressure on your hands/wrist, played a couple hours straight these evening with no adverse affects.
Anyone have an advice or point me in the right direction for attaching and displaying images in a post?
Thanks in advance.
Can you sell me 2 (just the metal part i will use my own case on the metal) , i can pay with paypal and i need it shipped to florida?

I live in the UK so maybe the GameKlip would be a cheaper option for you?

Thanks for the info, but unfortunately I am in still in "noob" number of posts so can't link externally. I'll just have to get my 10 posts sorted I guess
Edit: The Gods that be granted me external image linking access!
Any chance you remember what the wire came from or the steel plate. GameKlip doesn't make one for my phone and he has no plans to. I have an amaze 4g and really want something to do this and i'm pretty good a DIY type things..
For the life of me I cannot find a wire similar or something stiff but bendable. Any ideas? Also any ideas on where to shop for types of metal or somewhere you could get a piece cut as I don't have many abilities tool wise in my apartment.
Very cool idea nice work. Always like to see people come up with cool ideas.

The wire is a copper coated mild steel gas welding rod. Similar to these on eBay, you might be able to get a "test" sample from somewhere. It is pretty strong, but with a vice and mole grips you'll easily be able to manipulate the rod. The steel plate was just part of a scrap sheet, cut to size with a hack saw. Not sure were you are located to advise you further on buying the plate? Any other questions just let me know.

I like it, is it white tak to hold it in place? I wanted to do a plastic mount too, but I didn't have any acrylic or similar plastic to melt and shape. Hope you don't mind, I put a link in your post too.
Just take plexi glass

This is a great Idea! Gonna go search my shed see if I can do something similar.. Live in UK so GameKlip isnt exactly the best option for me..
Put some pics on here when you are done. Curious to see what other come up with.
I use mine on almost every commute to work; makes GTA: Vice City far more enjoyable!
Awesome!
Thanks so much! I didn't want to fork out for a GameKlip and postage and just had to try this when I came across your post. Used an old coat hanger and bent it into shape with pliers and sheer manliness. It's crude but it works and it only took me half an hour. I've bought a case to use so that I can attach it on as well.
My prototype version:
