new development forums - HTC One X

hmmm just spotted the new Development forum and not sure i like the way or logic XDA has used to create them.
I would so much prefered a way where Roms/Kernels/tools would have had there own subsections... at them moment the development forum across all devices is just a big old mess... it near impossible to keep up with some ROM development as there so much noise in there.
Not really sure the new design makes this any better.. now i have to remember if someones ROM/Kernel is there own or is based off of it and go to the right dev section so im sure instead i now have to keep check both. (same on other devices i have)

Kind of true. It would indeed be better if we actually had more sections cause it is indeed a bit of a mess. I would be lying if i said you cant find anything but a better overview is very welcome

i am going to be honest with you this is kinda a kick in the teeth for the devs of the roms...why would you separate something now like that is beyond me specially with most of the work is original anyway like look at the Viper Rom..All the tweaks and coding those guys put is original..
Same with ARHD rom...Basically 90% of stuff in that section is original....To be honest it is beyond belief why XDA does this but well you just got to respect there decisions...I find it wrong but hey

A better idea would be to have a sort of filter system, and a group of people who go around and give badges to the threads deserving of the "original content" status.

Agreed

Yes even a better Filter system would have helped.. if evenone stick to the rule of [ROMS] / [Kernel] / [Tools] etc in the subject line then a nice way to just show those would have been much better.
But subsections should have been the way forward.
I also feel sorry for those over on the SII Forum, have you see how much a mess that place is?

im totally confused, why do we need another forum?

cause it is a mess mate...the new forum is just making it more confusing now for people and not just that it is a mess now

THE BEST IDEA IS TO HAVE MULTIPLE SUBSECTION LIKE
DEVELOPMENT- JUST DEVELOPER RELEASE AND THERE SHOULD BE LINK TO THE DISCUSSION THREAD OF THAT DEVELOPMENT RELEASE WHERE USERS CAN REPORT BUGS
DISCUSSION.
. OFFTOPIC
THEMES APPS AND GAMES.
YOU CAN HEAD TO forum.samdroid.net and look at I5700 as it was the primary phone of that forum. u can see how well the idea of original development and discussion is implemented

Poll-Rhodium Android Development Sub-forum Request!!!

I am posting this only because I am sick, as many of us are, of searching through 10 forums/sub-forums, polls and bountys just to get the information on updates to Android running on our TP2's.
Please vote!!!
Doing this to hopefully get the attention of the mods.
bump
Any other takers?
I voted. I wish all applicable phone forum groups would have an Android sub-forum in them. It would surely clean up the forums a lot!
i definately agree that we should have a sticky for this, would make things much easier to have everything in one place, a one-stop forum for all that is android
87 page threads can be a little tough to sort through too. Hopefully having their own forum will allow them to decompress a little and let noobs like myself get a better idea of the progress without investing enough time to read war and peace. +1 for an Rhodium Android subforum.
no, I like searching in umpteen different places. 4 10.00%

There's never a shortage of wisenheimers on the interwebz.
I dunno this survey question seems iffy
I would definitely like this - there needs to be more threads for Android on Rhodium as things develop, and they need to be kept together. A sub-forum would fit the bill perfectly.
great idea!
I think a subforum would be a great idea...
You could say the same things for any of the more popular WM ROMs too though, e.g. threads with thousands of responses are out of hand and very hard to manage.

Yeah, what this guy said, + the Android sticky; [email protected]
I think what we really need is a mod to close all the Android threads. Then someone who cares about keeping stuff up to date (Read my vote as reefermattness) start a new thread.
I think it is becoming cumbersome to try to sift through all of the threads and post to see if anything has been updated on the XDAndroid project. It would help a lot to see it all in one sub-forum. It would help to clean up the other Rhodium forums also.
Everyone keep up the great work and keep showing all of our support for Android for Rhodium!

I think bringing it to the attention of the mods may help things. Because there is so much development why not have a sub forum to weed through instead of getting it mixed up with the great Roms that are listed in this sub.

just joking around with you guys. Also, just want to give you guys couple links that is working for me (the above and my signature)
i think it is still too early to request an adroid subforum...first get everything to work...then request it
since not everything works
anyway this subforum isn't called "wm rom development",but rom development..so it is totally reasonable that such threads go here
so please triplecheck before you request something...

Except it's not a ROM yet, so I guess it shouldn't belong here. And it's not an application so it shouldn't belong in the Apps sub-forum either.
So let's call it Android Development!

Imagine having to sort through a 797 page thread.... *cough* NRG *cough*
I do agree that we should have a subforum here though, because I never know where to look for TP2 Android port updates, and it seems like if i do find a dedicated thread, theres someone saying to check "the other thread" for more information on one aspect or another... It would be great to have it all in one place!

Threads moved.

I moved as many threads as I could from the GSM section to here. If I missed any, please just link them in here and I'll get them moved. Thanks for the help.
Hopefully this will spark some more interest in development! I'm still learning!
I think this was a bad idea.
Its going to cause problems/confusion when it comes down to posting topics, ie what if a dev topic is not restricted to one or the other?
A much better way would have been to simply enforce set tagging standards, no need to split sections like this. It would have been like splitting the HD2 section into EURO/TMOUS (512MB/1GB) sections, its just impractical and doesn't improve things which is why tagging is a much better idea.

But that's also much harder to enforce
It harder to enforce.
The dev section is supposed to be about releasing a product. If your release is for either or, I'm not gonna complain if you post it in both places. That makes it a little more work to follow, but i believe its reasonable.
suggestion to alleviate that problem is to make a sticky post Call shared points of interest [CDMA-GSM] name not being important but u can keep an archive of things that have interest cross platform and to make it easier ask that the dev/readers tag posts that fit that topic.

Amen. And it's not like it's that much more work to copy-paste to the different threads.
Personally, I love this change and have become way more active in the SGT development than when everything was mixed up.
I like the change but is there any way to get the change reflected in the android app? when i browse the forums in there, they are still mixed in one development thread. Its even more beneficial to have the split there where browsing is harder.
So, we're back to one section now? Or is it going to go back and forth for ever....
Bad move, I could easily see the files that applied to my device, now they are lost in all the GSM stuff thats useless to me.
Return please
just like to throw in my two cents I much prefer to have it split up it takes me forever now to find what I am looking for please put back to split it up for CMDA and GSM...Thanks
Are you guys on crack?
All you need to do is use your eyes and look for tags. You could even use search feature and search for "CDMA" and choose "Titles only" from the drop down menu.
Splitting the forums does more harm then good, its much better like this.
Really don't like this.
I think we should keep it separate. Lets get this organized. Too cluttered. What else can I say.
delete please
I much prefer them separated
Popped in to have a look at the latest updates (since I visited a few hours ago) and noticed a whole bunch of ROMs and kernels that I thought were new only to realise they are actually CDMA... Downloaded one and was just about to wipe when I noticed

And how is the forums been re-merged going to make them "brick" their device??
n00bs shouldn't be messing with their devices until they have done enough reading, if they mess their devices up its their own fault and their own problem.

True this, but you also have people who DO KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING, that can make an error and pull the wrong item. It does happen. Much easier to leave it the way it was... IN TWO FORUMS!

You shouldn't be pushing your opinion as law and saying people with opposing views are on crack, but you are, just as newbs flash without reading.
With that logic, we just just put every single Samsung, no, wait, every single device on this forum in one section and just use tags. That'll teach the newbs and people that don't know every in and out of vBulletin.
I saw a thread with many complaint about having 2 separated forums in Galaxy Tab then i proposed to our user Experience Svetius the merge, now i'm seeing many complaint here about the merge:
If developers put on Title for what kind of phone they are building for [CDMA] [GSM] (or Euro and TMo,verizon, or whatever) it is fair enough, if a newbie doesnt know what kind of rom grab in this mode, for sure he doesnt know even if the forum is splitted, and remember that 75% of newbie doesnt even read any sticky thread and, for what i know, those threads are plenty of usefull informations for newbie and expert users.

Dev Forum Organization

I know this has been talked about before, but how do you guys feel about having two subforums in the Dev forum called "GB Roms/Kernels" and "ICS Roms/Kernels"? Everything that isn't a GB/ICS ROM/kernel stays in the main Dev forum. Seems pretty simple and would keep that place hella more organized and easier to find stuff.
It doesn't require much work; having modded and admin'd vbulletin forums myself, I know you can select multiple threads and move them at once. Something like this could easily be done by one person in less than 30 minutes. I wouldn't mind doing it myself but I don't think the admins and mods would want to trust that sort of power to someone they don't know too well and therefore, naturally don't trust.
What say you?
I would definately be in favor. I see a lot of the other phones sorted into original development and then development. Development being stock/modded ROMs and then original development being anything that was actually created whether it being AOSP or Stock ROMS built from source and whatnot. Now I don't think that would really apply for this phone right now as the AOSP scene isn't that big right now due to source not being available. And when I say not big I mean in comparison to like the Int SGS2 which had like umpteen million AOSP ROMs LOL.
I definitely think some sort of organization would be nice. The only issue I see with a 2.3 and 4.0 split is that the 2.3 side is dwindling fast and before long would be obsolete which would sort of be the same as letting the threads die and fall to the back and that is going to happen no matter what.
Organization is never a bad thing.
+1 on dividing up the dev thread into GB & ICS.
I doubt the moderators will go with it since none of the other devices on XDA that I know of do not do this as well. Maybe we can be a trendsetter. XDA-moderators are like old men and get set in their ways and "iron-fist" policies, so good luck. Great idea though!

I believe u need at least 10 or 1k topics first to divide a section

what the hell kind of retarded ass rule is that? just because a forum has 500 threads therefore means that it's organized? our dev section has almost 300 threads. 300. that's a pretty big number of threads. i can understand at least 50 or 100 threads, but a 1k or 10k thread requirement is straight up stupid.

Please Make a Poll about ROMS, and let people vote..

I am not a pro user of these forums, but I would like someone, especially the Mods to make a thread about most popular roms of DHD and let people vote.. It would give one an idea of what rom is trending and what is the most widely used.. Sure would help ignite the competition too ..
If any such thread already exists on this forum, please tell me...
You can do it yourself...and you might be the first one to do so (i havent searched to see if there is one out there already...)
It is not done do the fact we are all tired of hearing the same question over and over again what's the best rom what's a solid stable rom and they all get closed. Each rom works different for everyone. What's good to one is utter crap to another and your topic will only start a flaming war hence the reason why such threads are closed. Only you can tell what's good for you by trying a few out or reading comments on the devs threads. Hmm I think I hear zels footsteps.

Might be nice to centralize it though. No comments, just a pure poll. (Not sure if there's a way to do that.) It might cut down on the one-post immediately-closed "which is the best ROM" threads.
A poll with no comments may work.
Sent from my Ice Cold Inspire 4G
Well there is something similar. Its not a poll.. but it gives a pretty decent breakdown on the roms currently available broken down into categories Jellybean, ICS, GB etc. It might help out?

Yeah, I know about that, but I see a lot of threads opened that basically ask "I'm new, what is the most popular/best/favorite ROM?" The index gives a good list of available ROMs, but it doesn't shed a lot of light on how many people use each one, which seems to be what newbies would like to know (to help them decide which to install). Maybe a poll would cut down on such threads. I've PMed a mod to see if such a poll would be well-received.

I completely disagree, bcoz u can't compare all the efforts of devs. Every single piece of their work is truly admirable. Whatever they have done is absolutely priceless.
Sent from my HTC Desire HD
I didn't mean that devs work isn't priceless, of course that is commendable!! And its not strict comparing either.. I just meant that one should have idea about new trending romS and also how many people are using which rom.... I know one rom may be excellent for someone and crap for another, have probably flashed more than 100 roms myself. I am just taking about the current trend of roms
Sent from my HTC Desire HD using xda app-developers app
I agree with a poll with no comments, just a simple poll with rom names allowing members to state what they are using, we don't need to know their reasons why.
One thing I don't always understand is people read threads, see what features the rom has but still want other people to tell them.... Just install it and have a look yourself! Most common case I've seen is in the Sabsa Prime thread as it's what I use, people ask for updates and then when one comes along, they ask people to try it out and report back if it's worth updating. Grrrrr!! It's your phone, you want the updates so try it out and see if it suits YOU. Simples.

I saw your PM yesterday and had been giving it some thought. It looks like my co-moderator has contacted you already and let you know that the system will lock the poll as part of closing thread. Even if it was possible to separate the two, I'd be inclined to close down polls like the one you suggest. While some of you might think a poll like this a good idea, it smells a bit too much like a popularity contest.
Some of you may already know that many moderators in other forums have a wholesale ban on "Best ROM" threads. This is because a lot of these threads tend to be a breeding ground for rivalries and disrespecting others' work that can degenerate into infighting and other nastiness. I don't want to be heavy-handed on this topic because I see some benefit to discussions that compare/contrast ROMs and kernels IF they are done objectively and with respect for others. The last part of this is the most important here.
You might have already seen comments that say, "there is no best, try it and see what you like" and that's true. We all have different needs and likes, so there can be no best, but some sharing of knowledge and experiences with various ROMs can be helpful to others. Again, all of this needs to be done objectively and with respect for others. There's already a thread in General with many opinions and nobody's been really causing any trouble there, so I suggest all of you continue those discussions there. Please... no "best" polls.
I'm sorry to threadjack this from the OP, but since the idea has been shot down, I welcome your thoughts on the matter. If you don't want to air it out publicly, my PM box is always open.

Thanks for explaining. I just thought that a more centralized and easy-to-read format would help newbies who are confused when they first see that (seemingly endless) list of ROM threads that is so appealing to those of us who've been around a little longer. But I respect your position and it makes sense. Also, without the comment-locked-forum option, I agree that these types of threads do tend to degenerate.

[Q] SGSIII Camera Apk. & Mods, Which Are the Best Combinations?

With the Sprint variant of this phone, does any one have any ideas of a Apk and Mod combo that utilizes the camera to it's fullest potential? Anyone with kids will especially like this, there is nothing that rocks as much as catching those priceless moments on film. I'm on the stock kernel, JB (The Domination rules)ICS, and LIH (base and). My goal is quality, resolution, and bit rare. An advanced zoom would be kool also.
Any suggestions are welcomed......

Again I apologize about my actions and promise my intention was not to scare you away it was all in good fun.
Thanks

Thanks BigRitz, but it was not you who I was referring to. I'm not here to flame/bash, but let's just say rhyming in combat will get ya killed! Chances are I'm more educated then both of them combined. I'm not looking for problems just answers.

well now its in Q&A so can we maybe get some answers (assuming their are any of course
LOVE the speed of the new camera and they have DRAMATICALLY improved low light performance AND ALSO dramatically improves LLP of the front facing camera.
anyway here is something I WANT SO BADLY.
Focus Lock. or Infinity lock. it still has "hunting" issues in low contrast low light situations (such as fireworks) really annoying. it boggles the mind there is no infinity lock or even a simple focus lock on such a powerful device.
