[Q] How is Gaming on at&t galaxy s3 - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

i'm thinking of getting the galaxy s3 (us version) because, i bricked my old phone so i need a new one. my old phone would run games like gta3, max payne, nova3 with lag. I was thinking that because the phone is currently the best phone you can own, it should be able to play games quite easily,BUT i have heard some people say that they got lag on some games, or gameloft games said that the device isn't compatible with the game, so i was wondering what is your personal experience, because gaming so actually pretty important to me :fingers-crossed:
P.S. The only reason i'm not getting the international version is because its out of my price range:crying:, i really don't care about LTE

I have been playing some very high end games with zero lag. The s3 is a great choice for gaming.

thanks i just wanted to be sure before i bought the phone, and i'm sure after i root it and overclock it, it will be a beast.
Also is the white galaxy s3 hard to keep clean? Because i have heard people say that white phones get dirty easily

I have a white one and it's just like anything else. I haven't noticed it being any dirtier than say a blue one.

what carrier do you have? and how is the web browsing speed? One main probable i had with my current phone was that unless the brightness setting was maxed out, i couldn't use it outdoors? How is multitasking because with 2gb ram it should work flawlessly? How is battery life? i got to highschool so for the first 8 hours of the day i don't use it, and the rest of the day i play some games and listen to music, i don't mind having to charge it every night.

Shadowgun, riptide, and desert winds all play great. I have the tmobile version but they're all the same performance wise. Having two GB's of memory is awesome too. I multitasks like a boss and you never have to worry about backing out of anything.

thanks what about gta3, mass effect, nova3

NOVA 3 is not compatible right now at least. But hopefully soon. Mass Effect used to be not compatible too but now it is. Mass Effect looks and plays good. Dead Trigger looks good too.

+1 Dead trigger looks great and plays smooth when cranking up the quality to high.

The Sprint GS3 also does a great job at gaming

do you think gaming wise the international version does better or the same?

i have heard people reporting that gaming is much better with the international version because of the 4cores

Looks like Nova 3 is compatible now. I checked today and its available for i747 at least. Plays well !

I think as time goes by more games will become compatible, most games aren't even optimized for 4cores so that's where we have the advantage, and yet some how the i93000 make the games work even better than the SGH-I747
P.S What the difference between the SGH-I747 and the SGH-I747M?
Sent from my LG-E739 using XDA Premium App

Hardware wise, there is absolutely no difference between i747 and i747m. Its exactly the same as At&t model. The software is really the only difference and offered by the Canadian carriers.
The i9300 gpu is probably what makes the games run like butter. The Mali outperforms the adreno from what I've read. I'm not sure if quad core would do much other than decrease loading times. If I still had my i9300 I would have compared nova 3 on both. But chose to sell it to get the LTE version. Now I find out that I can't play multiplayer over LTE on nova 3 any workaround ? It looks for wifi only for multiplayer

Thanks your answer was really helpful!!! and I think that the you can't use LTE for multiplayer on ANY games , I think you can only play multiplayer using wifi, I think it has something to do with the fact it would be overload in the cell towers, plus since different company's use different wave lengths, u would only be able to connect to pleople who are the same network.

So I bought a Galaxy Nexus earlier today...

...and I might return it. I really am not terribly impressed with it. ICS is cool and all but I would much rather have a bone stock ICS ROM running on my Epic Touch. My biggest complaint about it, besides how narrow the screen is, is that games just don't run nearly as smooth on it as they do on the E4GT. I know it has a weaker GPU, but I didn't realize it wasn't powerful enough to run Riptide GP without dropping frames all the time. Pretty disappointing, TBQH. Verizon has an extended buyers remorse period because of the holidays. I am going to hang on to it till Jan 14th and give it a serious chance but so far it's not looking good.
edit: Oh yeah, I HATE how the home/back/tasks soft keys persist even when playing games. That's the main reason why I returned my Galaxy Tab 7.0 plus, and I can't tell you how disappointed I am that they are still there in ICS.
Such a shame that the Galaxy Nexus is such a let down. My friend has one so I played around with his for an hour or so. There was some choppiness during transitions here and there. Only reason I'd pick it over an Epic Touch is because it's a Nexus device. But since it's not available for Sprint it's not a phone I'd buy.
It has the gpu of the galaxy s1, that may explain why it doesn't hum like our phone. The ti processor is very good, perhaps >= exynos but the gpu kills it.
Only thing I love is the screen (except that the on screen buttons can't be toggled) and ICS, seems like the colors are more real. In every other aspect, I have to go with the S2 (minus the tmo and skyrocket variants)

I played around with my coworker's GNex and I think its nice and all, but......
I can't stand the lack of search button and the lack of a menu button. I felt like I was using a Pre or iPhone, I couldn't find out where the flippin' options were easily (I know that most have a little menu button in the top corner, but that's not apparent to me). Try to get to settings quickly? you can't without finding that app for settings. I also found it pretty laggy compared to my E4GT.
I do like the core app GUI changes, however. Very nice. The phone itself though....meh.

Just can't understand why Samsung is putting diffrent specs in the same model line phone on different carriers. Why does the T-Mobile version of the s2 have a different processor? That's ****ing retarded.

I'm speaking of the galaxy s2 models why nit just have the same specs on all carriers. Why does on carrier get one with one dual processor and the next gets a different brand. Why not stay uniform. And honestly imho the galaxy s line should be THE Google phone

Compatability. For example, T-Mobile's 42 Mbit/s HSPA+ network is not compatible with exynos which is why they have a different processor.

The downside if exynos is Android does not natively support it. So every time Google releases an os, Samsung has to port it which is no small task.

You guys do realize the iphone does not utilize 4G so the processor can be the same across the board. However, android phones do use 4G and not all networks are created equal (ex: HSPA+ FOR T-mo). Hence, the different specs.

The 4 is an A2 CPU and idk what gpu its running. The 4s is running an A3, is dual core, and beefier gpu. The iPad 1 and iPhone 4 use the same CPU, that's why there are jailbreaks available for them. IPad 2 and iPhone 4s share the same CPU. Its speculated its clocked higher on the pad. There also isn't a jailbreak for the A3 powered devices. There's no difference in hardware between the carriers of the same model phone. All 4 are the same and all 4S are the same.
I had a 4S for a couple of months on sprint before coming back to Android. I did some homework before and during owning the phone too.
I understand aosp is different than touchwiz. One alternative I could suggest is to get the et4g. Root, recovery and no ciq it after updating to ek02. After that, run sprint id and choose the clean pack. That is a bare bones setup, stockish launcher, and no touchwiz. Then go into the system/app directory and do something like add ".old" to the end of the apk of the bloatware and touchwiz crap. Now you have a pseudo asop looking ROM with the bloat rem'd out.

Chainfire 3D on Samsung S3 vs Native HTC One X international

Hello!
I was wondering if anyone knows how well the adreno handles the Tegra 3 features when compared to the Tegra 3? I was debating whether I should get the Nexus 7 just to play games on it or just use my Samsung S3 Rogers with Chainfire?
I mean is there a big frame rate difference?
Any advice or conclusions will go a long way!

I'm glad I'm not the only one looking for the Best solution. Don't get me wrong I love this phone but if I can play the game better (Dead Trigger example)
I'm actually hoping the answer is no difference so I can save 259.99$ + tax LOL!
Just switching to the Tegra plugin won't enable Tegra 3 effects. It requires editing some files and most T3 games won't run regardless.
With that said, people seem to have a little bit of lag with Dead Trigger and Nova 3 using Tegra effects IIRC.

It's either that, or switch to international version! I did test Dead TRigger fully now with the Tegra 3 plugin and Very high Settings Edit and it seems to run fine, but it does lag sometimes, does any1 know if this happens to Mali users or Tegra 3 users?

Okay I've looked into it, I might actually purchase this because it looks awesome. Love RPGs but I saw reviews from the play store to internet saying it runs great with no issues. I did see someone mentioned Two versions of the game - HD/SD. I'm assuming you bought the SD version.
But yes the nexus seems to play it fine, I'm sure it might run a bit slower compared to a tablet lol but I will also say it will depend on your ROM/Kernel choice too. I'm sure there won't be issues but you never know .
Anyway hoped that helped, I really probably buy this but by the time I'm ready to purchase my info probably won't be helpful lol.

What's a good upgrade from this phone?

I am debating whether to buy the Nexus 4 or the Note II. Yes I admire the huge screen, and really doesn't bother me. But at the same time, the Nexus has some features that the Note II can't simply offer. Things as important as updates straight from Google, from stupid little things like the notification lights. Which one should I decide?
Well, if you get the Nexus 4, it's almost the same price outright as the Note 2 is on contract. I recently switched to Straight Talk Wireless prepaid and am using the same T-Mobile network for only $45/month. So I think the deciding factor between the two phones is whether you want to stay on a contract for another two years, or explore other options.

Stagnated in improvements?? Both the Nexus 4 and Note 2 are amazing upgrades compared to this phone.
-Better, bigger 720p screens
-GPUs with more than twice the power of the adreno 220 (NFS Most Wanted plays SO smooth on the Note 2.)
-quad core CPUs that put this snapdragon s3 boat to shame with antutu scores of 12,000+
-2gb of ram
-MUCH better cameras
-The Note 2 has insane battery life
-and to top if off both ship with official Jelly Bean?
Stagnant? I don't even..

Dude the battery life alone is to kill for. I'm gonna run a little test at work. Fully charge it and then unplug it. See how long it lasts.
Wish I could toss a huge battery in this phone without making it look like a 90s brick cell phone.

Stagnated in improvements?? Both the Nexus 4 and Note 2 are amazing upgrades compared to this phone.
-Better, bigger 720p screens
-GPUs with more than twice the power of the adreno 220 (NFS Most Wanted plays SO smooth on the Note 2.)
-quad core CPUs that put this snapdragon s3 boat to shame with antutu scores of 12,000+
-2gb of ram
-MUCH better cameras
-The Note 2 has insane battery life
-and to top if off both ship with official Jelly Bean?
Stagnant? I don't even..

NFS most wanted plays very smoothly in my phone and the nexus' camera doesn't seem to be any better than my phone's.
That said, I'm still gonna get the nexus 4 because it's overall the best phone you can get for that price.
I don't think the note 2 and the nexus 4 are really competing with each other. they're aimed at two different types of people. For me, the note's just too big and too expensive, lol. But the screen is gorgeous so if you're comfortable with the huge screen then it's perfect.

Don't lie. NFS most wanted does NOT play smoothly on this phone. Either that or you'e completely oblivious to framerates. It runs smoother on JB ROMs than ICS ROMs.. but even then I notice frame rates float between the low 20s to low 30s and it fluctuates ALOT. I've tried this game on around 10 ROMs or so. Even with cpu overclocks and overclocked GPU speeds.
The Note 2 stays above 40 fps at all times and doesn't drop one bit. As seen in this video
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qyg8vTbGRX8&feature=youtube_gdata_player
And this is a video of the game playing on an exynos powered GSII, and mind you the Mali 400 GPU stomps the adreno 220 found in this phone..

So yea. No.
Feel free to upload a video of gameplay to prove me wrong. Till then, I call bullsh*t.

How to make android apps run like ios?

Ok so here is my dilemma.... I had an iPhone 5 for a period of two months. I hated it. But the one thing that i liked from ios itself was the way it ran its apps. Whenever i opened any app, it paused whatever else was running in order for the current app to run smoother. Even playing games on my s3 has las lag, while in ios they dont. I dont do much multitasking, so that's why i was wondering if this implement would be possible. I realize things like screen size and other things come into play, but is it something i can fathom at all?

You just hibernate the apps. They won't run in the background unless you open them.

If you wish. The apps will take a bit longer to open.

Actually, according to the description in the Play Store (and from personal usage), it does not make your apps take longer to open. I also have great battery life after only using greenify effectively
14 hours battery (till 9%) and 5 hours screen on time
The reason I went to ios. I couldn't stand the little lag issues. :/ if they fix it ill definitely go back to android.

I only get lag when im on a game. I dont know why. Even less heavy graphic ones like vector. I just want it to pause everything else while im on an app...

You could go into Settings/Developer Options/Limit background processes and change the setting to something other than standard limit.

The GS3 can play almost all games except a few high end ones in my experience. Also, the GS3 came out about half a year before the iPhone 5 did. Not only that, the GPU, at least the LTE version with Snapdragon processor is not as powerful as the iPhone 5 GPU. For gaming, not all games will play lag free. The newer, more powerful GPU's in some of the latest high end Android smartphones will do better. I have the Snapdragon 600 with Adreno 320 and it handles games way better than my GS3.
Pros and cons. The GS3 is still a great device. I just wouldn't expect to play all high end games.

With anthrax I can't find a single game that doesn't run smooth as can be.
Have you gotten to play with an s4? How are you liking the one? And if so how's it compare to an s4?

I am aware of many reviews mentioning slight lag with the GS4. Although, turning off a lot of the features you don't use will help some. Without rooting you are allowed to disable a lot of the BS. In this regard, I honestly have not seen or noticed any lag or stutter on my HTC One. My htc one really just runs smooth.
The brief time I messed with the GS4 I liked it. I really enjoyed my GS3 and feel I would love the GS4. Both really are great high end smartphones. I don't agree with a lot of people knocking the GS4 for looking so much like the last year's model. It's no different than when Apple goes from the 3 to 3GS or 4 to 4S etc.
I also liked and enjoy my GS3 with stock TouchWiz. I thought about getting the 32GB GS4. I would keep it stock and just disable as much garbage as I could. But, I am leaning towards saying screw all the BS and get the Google Edition. Although I would love to use the Multi Screen Feature I would rather get updates straight from Google and not wait for my carrier to push my bug fixes or updates half a year later. So it looks like the GS4 Google Edition is in my future.
Both the htc one and GS4 are great devices. Each has pros and cons. Like all devices.
