is the universal search omitted in the OTA update of 4.1? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

hi guys,
i just want to clarify something base on this article:
http://news.cnet.com/8301-17938_105...oftware-patch-to-avoid-galaxy-nexus-sales-ban
Did Google patch up and remove the universal search feature on the newly OTA update of Android Jellybean 4.1.1 for Galaxy Nexus HSPA+ version ?

As has already been covered in a few articles, no it was not removed.
View attachment 1190365
Surely this infringing part will be removed with a simple update in the Play Store to the Search app.

Google Now on 4.1.1 doesn't send text message
Although Google has stated that the new 4.1.1 update for jellybean didn't affect universal search on our phones, can anyone verify that they can send text messages via Google Now?
I launch Google Now
I say, "Send text to (name), has Google Now been dumbed down?"
Google Now then lists the recipients name and a button to 'Send Message' appears.
I press the 'Send Message' button but nothing happens.
Normally, it would launch Messaging and send the text for me. Can someone verify that this command stills works? Thanks.

[Q] Quick responses via google voice

Does anyone know if the quick responses feature works with google voice text. I don't have SMS plan. So it would be super useful to have that feature. I have google voice installed. But I don't see any setting for that.
If it's like other functions (at least on gingerbread), like voice actions, it will ask you what you want to use to send the text when you use the feature, and you can choose GV as default there.
I don't have a GN to confirm this, so this is only an educated guess.
I posted a question about this the other day. It does not look like there is an intent for this.
When I tested this, the reply came from my cell phone number, not my google voice number. There IS an intent for "send text..." in Voice Actions but doesn't look like for this. I hope there's a fix!
Maybe a dev can take up creating one?
Back with my Samsung Galaxy S II, I had loaded an MIUI rom and used their five-points lock screen - one of the short cuts was for the SMS app. Someone had created an APK that I installed, that after installation, when I went to the SMS shortcut, up popped up an intent asking if I wanted the Messages or Google Voice app. I wish I had the know-how to do something like this!
Is there any way for us to get this to work with google voice? I want it bad!
Did anyone get this figured out?
I'm using ICS on a captivate and use GV for everything. I would really like to get this working so I can use the quick responses.
I'd really like to see this fixed/added too. After searching, I really only saw these two other forums tracking it and wasn't sure if there are other places I should be raising my hand. I can confirm that it's the only part of the OS that I've come across that does not let me choose Google Voice instead of the native phone or messenger.
(just found out I can't link as a first time member...)
rough web address: google code android issues #23176
rough web address: google code android issues #23442
Is this something that would likely pop up as an update to ICS? Is this something that would likely require loading an entirely different ROM? Are those questions even appropriately constructed (new to android)?
I made an app a few months back that let you share some text... one of the frequently referenced intents in Android documentation would only send to Messaging (show you the messaging app with the text pre-filled in) and not GV..
Another, less publicized intent let you "Share" with all kinds of applications. This was the only one that would prefill GV and Messaging (and email and tons of other apps). But again, it was an intent that would open the apps pre-filled, not send it.
Another thing that could be done in the app was to just send a text from within the app.. The user never sees the messaging or any other app and the text is sent. This is obviously can only work through native SMS not GV. (For this, an app that uses this feature needs the SMS permission)
--
I haven't done the quick responses yet, but I assume they send the text without taking you to an app, so that's not an intent that's sending a message through the OS, and impossible with GV. Again, I haven't looked at Quick Responses, so I don't know if this is how it behaves.
Please Star the issue on Google Code to get Google's attention!

Also - disregard my last comment. The intent to send through GV already exists, they just need to call the right intent in the dialer app / quick response. This fix would literally take them 5 minutes to do. Star it to get higher priority on the issue!

Using Google Now to send Whatsapp chats?

Hello,
If you say "text mom where are you" it will correctly send an sms to the contact. Is there any way to make it send a whatsapp msg to the contact instead of an sms?
thanks
It would have to be coded into the WhatsApp messenger Since Google doesn't own WhatsApp, then I don't think there is a way as of now.
I'm not familiar with that application, but until Google opens the API for Google Now, it will continue to send through the default SMS application.
Hope this helps!
Unfortunately, Google said at I/O that they don't have any plans to add an API for 3rd party access to Google Now.

This is no longer true. As of Wunderlist's latest update (a third-party to-do app), users now have the option of saving notes to Google Keep OR Wunderlist's through Google Now/Search provided they are installed.

I use the Gmail app and also cannot figure out how to archive vs. just trashing. Anyone??
The latest version of gmail 4.2 has an option for swype message which states archive or delete but when I swype a message it always deletes it. There are no other options that I can find unless you set this on via the web browser. Point is that the option is there so perhaps we may see another option or a popup for the swype action in future builds.
However, also in the 4.2 app if you select a message with the little checkbox you get a file-cabinet icon popup at the bottom of the screen - Archive! Not sure if this exists in the older version as no longer have it on my phone.

Thanks for the info.
Not sure if this is how it's SUPPOSED to be done, but....if I remove the INBOX label from the mail, it disappears from the inbox, and magically goes to ALL MAIL, and at the bottom of the screen reads "1 archived." Only took me four hours to figure that out! I'm sure there must be a tutorial somewhere...I went onto the Google Help site, and there was no reference to this at all. Maybe I'm just a little too picky.
How do I update to GMail 4.2 and/or find out which version is on my S3? As you can tell, I'm new to Android.
In all honesty I am not overly familiar with gmail as have other accounts that I use, I also did not realise that a message without a lable is an archived one!
For 4.2 follow the instructions in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1933273&highlight=gmail+4+2
I would use the .apk to install it as you are new to android. Take a read through the thread to make sure you understand everything but it is pretty simple.

[APP] HANGOUTS - NOW LIVE! (Play Store link)

I know this should go in apps/themes but will probably get most visibility here, plus this thread will die quick enough anyways. Mods, move it if you want, not that you need my permission.

Hangouts replaces Talk.
Also, the Search (Now), Maps, & Music updates are avaiable.
The Chrome version is there and pops up a window overlay
Anyone know if SMS is part of it? Seems silly for it not to be, but doesn't look like it's part of it. So not actually unified messaging yet.

Just installed it, and people's numbers are listed. What happens if I send a message to one? Bearing in mind that Google Voice doesn't yet exist in the UK!
Really does seem like an huge gap. They talked about getting technology out of the way so you can get on with communication, but I still have two apps to send messages and pictures to other people!
deleted, repeat message

It verified my # first?. But didnt migrate my sms list and the hangout message I sent didnt show in sms. I agree it would be cool if that was a feature, maybe in the future.
Didnt want to make a new thread for this but since we are talking about apps and stuff announced at Google I/O. New updates for Google Play music and Google search are in the play store. Google Play Music looks COMPLETELY different.
It tried to verify my number, but I think that's a WhatsApp style link for others to find you.
However, my SIM reports my number as something else entirely because I ported a number over. So it couldn't verify me. Trying to talk to my network now, they're not answering...

I like the improvements too! I figured as much of a hot topic as Hangouts has been I might as well post the thread just in case someone forgot what today is lol. Like I said in the OP, I'm expecting it to die quickly - just a friendly PSA. But you are correct, probably didn't warrant a new thread but I've seen worse.

Mine said it was going to send a sms, but I never received one, instead I received a notification that my # was verified.
Yeah, but the number my SIM reports is not my phone number, and Hangouts picked up the number from the SIM! Trying to get the network to reset it...
When I open up the play store link, it says installed but when I open it, Google Talk opens up...any ideas?

This is transitioning Talk into Hangouts so it may take a little time for everything to line up. At first I was being directed to "Hangouts (replaces Talk)" that just said "open" on my device, and it looked like Talk. But then, after a dozen impatient refreshes, "open" changed to "update". Now Talk is labeled Hangout and has the new UI, but the icon is still Talk. Messages I am sending in Hangout on my phone are appearing in Talk in gmail on my comp right now.

In my phone I have the Hangout installed now, even started a group conversation, but still getting the old Talk interface in chrome, hence not seeing group messages, and not getting either the new emoticons, nor the new interface, nor the smileys, even when I click the new Hangout button in the toolbar. Maybe it will be implemented after some time in the future

If you are using a ROM where Talk is one of the system apps, you may need to uninstall it. I used Titanium Backup to uninstall it and then downloaded Hangouts from the Play Store.

If I'm understanding you right, you're trying to access Hangouts via the Gmail web interface. The Chrome Hangouts plugin does NOT replace the Talk box in Gmail. It adds an extra app, which is accessed by clicking the Hangouts icon on your Chrome toolbar.
The Gmail web interface will be rolled out later and will be upgraded from within Gmail itself.
Sideload mirrors as attached. (hangouts apk was too large for xda. reuploading...)

Text Messages can't be forwarded

I had been using samsung handsets upto note 8 but this time on new s9 in which there is a problem in text message forwarding as only two options are available on long pressing it as either "delete" or "details" ...
plz any solution to it....
has to be an issue with yours. Mine, long pressing gives me the following options, Delete, Copy Text, Forward, Share, Star Message, Send to Reminder, Copy to SIM Card, and View Message Details.
Yeah..me having same issue
If message is from banking or other commercial site..it has no option of copying. E.g. messages from AD-HDFC etc.
Messages from regular number has all options
This is annoying
How to get over this
SAMSUNG is screwing things .

I downloaded from apk mirror. I'm rooted so I updated myself.
When I try to forward a message to additional members in a group the phone doesn't allow me to choose from the group. What gives? It only shows contacts and not the group option. I have a group with 60 people.
