Site Suggestion: "I'm a donor" badge. - About xda-developers.com

Lots of people use ROMs developed here. Some donate, some don't. How about a 'I'm a Donor' badge near the avatar for people that donate to devs. Make the freeloaders feel bad.
It would increase the revenue to developers and increase their participation. Increasing the quality of the ROMs, increasing the quality of XDA, increasing the traffic to XDA, increasing ad money coming into XDA: profit.
1.) Donor Badge near Avatar
2.) ???(JK, do aforementioned items)
3.) Profit!

Donations
Making a donation is neither expected or required, but are always gratefully received and appreciated.
There are "Donate to me" icons above people's avatar, or in their signatures.
You can also donate to XDA by clicking HERE.
When you donate 10 EUROS to XDA,you get rewarded with a STAR

Edit: Sorry, just re-read and realized you were referring to donations to devs. Not a bad idea, but difficult in practice.

There would be problems on whom to consider as devs, if ever xda plans to make this "official"...
There are loads of wanna-be's, who haven't done much but would jump if someone says that to them...
Plus, there are plenty who never actually get recognition of the good work they do...
Even though the suggestion/idea is good, the feasibility is a point of debate...
However, if you feel like donating, you can contact the dev of your choice and work out an arrangement...the dev might just credit you in his next work (though there is no obligation on his part)...
And as mf2112 pointed out, donations are gratefully received, though not required...
Typed using a small touchscreen

I don't see this happening and here's why....
Some people unfortunately have no grasp on the definition of the word donation. There is a certain type of user who seems to be under the impression that if you donate to a developer you then own not only their work but also their soul.
This horrific misconception then leads to idiots demanding updates and whining about bugs which should be fixed, all because they donated a few measly $'s.....
So yeah, donations imo should remain as discreet as possible, you know you've donated, the developer knows you've donated and that's that. This would essentially just be another way for (some) people to increase the size of their e-peen and attempt to make themselves feel superior to others.

I don't think this so be possible, as we do not have such information, and cannot easily find it out in a way that is unintrusive and preserves people's privacy...
There's no way to verify such donations automatically without using PayPal IPN systems, thus meaning you give xda full details of every penny going in or out of your PayPal...
Manual is plain not an option unfortunately.

[Idea] - Personalized WM6 ROMs

Hi there,
Just a thought I had today:
Since the ROM chefs are working so hard and getting little donations, and since we already come to a stage where there are several stable ROMs out there, maybe it is the time to a new era - a full personalized ROM.
In my mind, a user decides based on his understanding what he wants: Cingular settings or Orange UK, Adobe Reader LE vs. Clearview, HTC X button, Fast or Large Memory, black, blue or white skin, their own splash screen etc. as long as these are free apps.
Then a ROM Chef cooks for him exactly what he asks for. User pays for that service (note: for the service, not for the ROM) 10-15 $ or so and everyone's happy. ROM Masters can cook several a day making few thousands of $$$ a month, users will have their own favourable version, XDA will be as busy as a market in a rush hour and everyone will be happy.
Comments are welcome...
IMHO, this is a bad idea. The chefs aren't doing this to make money. They do it as a hobby or something they love doing, and paying for services goes against what XDA was built around. Donations are one thing, but this shouldn't be about money.
Besides, the way most are building their ROMs currently, with a base ROM and then cabs to personalize, should suffice for those users who aren't up to cooking their own.
MS would sue them so fast it wouldn't even be funny. It would be exactly the same as sites selling 'backup CDs' of software for $5.
As soon as there is a monetary requirement for the transfer of ROMs it will get shut down.
MS puts up with XDA because it does not show up on their 'pirate-radar'. "Look like a pirate and be treated like one..."
Besides, I like it the way it is. If I am going to much with my phone I've got to learn how to use it. OS reinstalls on cell phones are not exactly something mainstream anyways.

xda-dev did show up on the pirate radar and was asked to remove the ROM's on the FTP... so we do have to be carefull with what we are 'doing'
In other forums (for other devices) you can build you own ROM by selecting what packages you want very easy, and for free.
I think this is going to be needed soon, as there are more and more requests about for ROM's to be re-developed with or without such and such.
Look at this for an example I've used myself. It's for a Blue Angel though.

I think the bigger problem would be support - once a user pays for a service he will expect and demand support for all the small problems inherent in the native Rom.
I do like the idea of the build your own application posted by Percz.
Couldn't agree more, good thought but bad idea.
In the end don't be a cheap ass, if you are using someones ROM kick them back a few bucks for some brew and don't be a cheap ass. They may do it not expecting something but if its good work you'll be using for awhile buy the guy a beer. Every little bit helps.

Now I would be intrested in an application like that. I'd love to be able to cook a ROM with just the apps I want.

Welcome to xda-developers.com
This site is about certain PDA-phones, made by a firm called HTC in Taiwan. Their makers named them 'Wallaby', 'Himalaya', 'Blue Angel', 'Wizard' and 'TyTN', but almost nobody knows them by those names. The mobile provider O2 sells them under the brand-name 'XDA', and that's what we had in our hands first. They're also known as Qtek, MDA, SX-56, Hermes and many, many other names.
Since we develop software for it, we need information, and nobody seemed eager or ready to give us what we needed. So we 'reverse-engineered' the devices, found a lot of information, and shared it with the world. But as our site grew we realised that lots of ordinary users were also suffering from a lack of support. They started using the xda-developers forum to communicate and before long the forum was as much a user forum as it was a developer forum.
We hope that you will enjoy this site and find it as useful as we do. We encourage you to donate or otherwise support this site. Of course absolutely all proceeds from donations will benefit this community.

Thanksgiving

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone in the community!!
Thanks to the devs that make our phones great. With little to no compensation they choose to make all the ROMS, themes, apps, and all the other goodies we use every day. Sometimes we take them for granted, but most of them do all of this just because they enjoy it.
Also thanks to the folks here at XDA and over at Rootzwiki for giving us a place where people with common interests can come to learn, teach, and discuss everything Android. They put up with all our crap too!!
Also thanks to the noobs. They may aggravate us sometimes, with the posting threads in the dev section, or not using the search tools, but they help the community as well. Without all the new users, Android wouldn't have grown to what it is. Plus we were all noobs at one time. I know for myself, that I feel good when I can help someone, or at least point them in the right direction.
Everyone be safe in your travels going to see friends and family. Don't forget to enjoy the food!!
Ditto here!! Thanks to all and I hope all will have a wonderful holiday!!

Non-signature Signatures

Such as those applied by tap-a-talk are extremely annoying and many of them are multi-line. I have signatures disabled so I don't have to see the same user signatures over and over, but there are so many users using tap-a-talk signatures that it's futile. It makes reading posts on the forum much more difficult.
Is there any chance we could have the tap-a-talk signatures banned or is there a setting in the tap-a-talk/xda-developers code that would allow their tap-a-talk signature to not make it into the post?

The mobile app signature is nothing more than a line of text that is automatically inserted into the post when it is made. Therefore it is not possible to filter these out and I'm afraid you will just have to put up with them.
It's also entirely impossible for us to "ban" them as we cannot possibly enforce a rule like that across a site with 2 million+ active members....
Sorry

I hate it when thing come to a bad, unresolvable end.
Although everything can be fixed! You just go to try and have hope.
Makes me think of customer service reading out of a manual; whether you like it or not, it always ends up as "Oh sorry sir, but I'm afraid you can't have your broadband increased even though you're paying 200x more for it."
Urghh!

How does my tapatalk signature can annoy? It's just 1/5 of a line. And 90 per cent of user use what I use or less.

Why would you want to get rid of the siggys?
Not sure if you knew this or not but, Forums cost money to keep up and running. It cost endless hours of management, reading, organizing. Those who buy the XDA-Developers Premium app are showing that they support all the hard work of those who put countless hours into making our phones run smoother and faster then we thought possible. I would love to see MORE users using the XDA Premium app.
Thanks to everyone who uses the app as a sign to support the DEV's! Without them we would be stuck with

[MINI GUIDE] XDA Features

I am creating this thread to remind new and experienced users of all the features available on the site. Although there are other longer guides telling users how to use the site, I think it is valid that I give tips based on my experience on the site. This is a Mini guide which means that I will only highlight key information about XDA which may or may not have been explored in different threads.
Check Out an Awesome Guide On the Search Function By: T-Macgnolia
As I say in all my guides, suggestions are like gold to me and I just want to make my service better. All reasonable comments are welcome. Please PM me if you have any urgent problems. I am sorry if my service is uninvited. It is also an extension to an earlier guide I posted HERE.
1) The Newsworthy Thread Feature

The newsworthy thread feature, located in the top right of the original post, is designed to give users the opportunity to vote for a thread good enough to be put into the XDA Portal. This feature remains un-noticed for many users. Hopefully, this thread will introduce it to them.
2) The BB Code
XDA has its own unique code that it uses to order text and images. While many new users may find this feature to be a bit old fashioned, Raw and confusing, it is actually critical to the nature of XDA. It gives you the opportunity to manipulate individual items and puts power in the hand of the user. (It also makes you seem a bit more tech-y). Most BB Code will work like this:
[SOMEBBCODEHERE]Crappy stuff[/SOMEBBCODEHERE].
Notice that I use square brackets, there is no space in between the crappy stuff and th brackets and that there is a forward slash on the ending BB code line.
For a full list of the BB code go HERE
3) Editing
Any post that you make can be edited. This is done by simply clicking the EDIT button in the bottom right of that post. But this will just open a quick edit box with limited options. To get all the other options just click here:
Initially, some special new users were a bit stumbled by this idea, assuming that it was a button used to get the advanced version of XDA.
4) The Rules
TheCellsOfMyBrain said:
Rules are what society is made of, without them people would not see themselves as in a society. Rules insure that people who think they are above or exempt from society are contained, such as if you murder someone you are arrested, for the good of society.

Although this is more of a tip, rules are a feature of XDA. Read and respect them. HERE is a Link to them.
5) The Report Button
The report button can be found on the top right of any post. When a user is found flaming (virtual yelling), posting in the wrong place or just breaking any immediate rules, hit that button.
I have spent quite some time typing this review, please do not troll. All suggestions on the other hand are more than welcome. Please hit 'thanks' if you appreciate my massive effort.
