OTA update message - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I have never received an Android OTA update, so with all of the JB OTA talk, I have a noobish question that I have not found an answer for.....
Since I am rooted with only minor tweaks here and there to the stock ROM (4.0.4), what will the OTA message say if I have teaked too much? Will it say that I am ineligible, will I just never get an update message, or will it try to install and then fail?
Thanks.

b117y,
I had this kind of question when I was still using root apps, and I would recommend backing up using OTA Rootkeeper, Titanium Backup, and finally ClockworkMod/ROM Manager, in that order, before updating anything.
As far as I know, it depends on the tweaks. For example, if you have a non-stock kernel, have modified essential system files, or have anything besides bootloader PRIMELA03 or radio I9250XXLA02 (assuming your devices is a HSPA+ 'maguro' version,) the update will most probably fail.
But for simple root tweaks, like LightFlow (not compatible with JB at the moment), Nova Launcher (installed as system or user app, it shouldn't matter), Cerberus (again, installed as system or user app, it shouldn't matter), or AdFree Android, it should update just fine. (And that is not in any way intended to be a comprehensive list.)

Question about OTA updates

Even though I'll probably be on to a new phone by the time the Inc 2 receives its OTA ICS update, I nevertheless want to be able to upgrade to it when it arrives. My question is, will the nandroid backup I have (Android version 2.3.3 with superuser but none of the bloat removed) be able to receive it? Or will I need to go through the whole process of unrooting and restoring 2.3.4 first?

you wouldnt want to take the ota regardless as it will likely block root and might bring an hboot that cannot be reverted from
id imagine we d get a leak of the ota ahead of time or just wait for a dev to make an update.zip version of it once its pulled from the servers or a phone
I also had a question about the OTA update. I HTC unlocked and rooted with SU and CWM recovery. I do have some of the bloated apps uninstalled with Titanium Backup. As soon as I heard that the upgrade for ICS was coming out, I flashed the stock recovery from the most recent RUU. Does anyone forsee any problems recieving the ICS OTA with this setup?
Well, not sure I would have done it that way... with the stock recovery you lose CWM's capabilities waiting for Vzw to release the ICS upgrade, and that could take months and months. Additionally, if you accept the ICS OTA my guess is that you'll lose root as well, and be stuck with Vzw's typical bloatware until you re-root. And we don't know if the new OTA will be immediately re-rootable. Some of the previous upgrades have required reverting to earlier versions.
As nitsuj17 remarks a few posts earlier, I would imagine that once the ICS upgrade for the Dinc2 is released, somebody will quickly get hold of it and post up a version for us rooted folks and we can just flash it from CWM. And use TB or AntTek App manager or whatever tool is your favorite to freeze or delete the Vzw crap. That's what I'm planning to do...

Odd behavior ROM Manager and OTA with CWM

I'm not sure what the issue is, but with rooted I747 and ROM Manager, if I Touch flash CWM, I get an immediate AT&T update notice with install or postpone as my options. If I choose install, CWM recovery comes up with install untrusted.zip in middle of the upper menu. I assume it's a genuine AT&T update (although I have no way of confirming this), but would have expected update.zip. So, what might this be about? Should I (can I) use Odin mobile to flash CWM and avoid this? Since I've rooted but run stock ROM, I'd like to receive OTA updates but maintain root. I'd use CF-Root but I don't think it supports this version of S3.

After seeing all the remarks in other threads about what the only AT&T OTA was, I realized I don't want it, and discovered I would likely be able to pick up any update here if I really needed it (significant performance or enhancement), so I've simply frozen the AT&T update app. Note sure what I'll do about update to JB that is rumored to be next month. I have it on Nexus 7 and don't think I need it on I747...at this point. No reason to look for trouble, as they say.

[Q] GN rooting & version

Hi,
I recently installed JB and rooted my GN using this tutorial (youtube.com/watch?v=1y3Lm6feyGI) and a few other infos picked here and there (including xda). It worked perfectly. BUT here is the thing: I had a GN GSM (I'm in Europe) maguro/yakjuxw running 4.04. My goal was to install JB 4.1.1 JRO03C which I did (and it runs like a charm so far). Now, when checking in Google Maps the version, I find 'takju'.
My question is: is that 'normal'? I mean installing JB had to change the version or is it something wrong I did like picking the wrong file or option in the GN Toolkit? And when I'm at it, is a rooted GN able to use OTA (and should the GN running a specific version for that)?
Thank you guys
Eric
When you flashed to Jelly Bean, you used the images directly from Google, which made your phone "takju". That just means from this point forward you'll get updates quickly directly from Google.
Root doesn't block your ability to get an OTA. Taking the OTA will make your root go away unless you use an app like "OTA Rootkeeper". Things that will stop you from taking an OTA are a custom recovery, different radios, modified/deleted system files.
If you have custom recovery, you can keep it and flash the OTA manually and keep that custom recovery. You just can't accept and auto-install an OTA.
Changing variant does not effect you in any bad way. It gives you benefit of being ota from Google
So the answer is yes, don't worry about it

[Q] Update stock Sprint GNEX to 4.2.1 from 4.1.1 keeping root

So been while since I've done much rom flashing. Had an EVO for 2+ years and tried lots of ROMS, but then got the sprint GNEX because I just wanted vanilla android without having to mess with ROMS as much. As such, I'm just running stock 4.1.1, with it rooted for a few apps and wifi tethering which I flashed after rooting. Looking to update to the new stock Sprint 4.2.1 firmware, keeping root and wifi tethering. Back on the EVO, every time there was a new firmare update, someone would post a "stock rooted" ROM (not that I used them), that didn't have anything done to it, but can't seem to find that with the latest Sprint GNEX update, only one that seems to come close has been fiddled with, deodexed, causing some issues. I'm also not used to flashing without my data being on a removable SD card. So I'm wondering, is there a way to just flash a rooted version of the Sprint firmware, keeping my data and wifi tethering (or by just flashing a new 4.2.1 wifi tethering patch), or can I use OTA rootkeeper, flash the OTA update, and restore root? I've got latest TWRP recovery btw, which it seems I would have to change back to stock recovery to flash the OTA update correct? Thanks for any direction anyone can provide
First off, im not sure about wifi tethering, but it is an option on gsm android settings. I would use OTA rootkeeper, but you need the stock recovery first to accept the ota. Did you check this thread? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1419170

Thanks so much for pointing me in the right direction. Swear I tried to search other threads before asking but somehow missed that one, looks like it should tell me what I need. Think I was looking too much in the development forum for a full ROM to flash, and missed that thread in the general forum about just applying the update. Thanks again!!

[Q] E973 FOTA V20h ?

Hi,
Searched the forums & Google and found nothing on this..
I got this Software Update notification on my Bell E973 : V20H-MAR-08-2013 (428.33MB)
I was wondering which Android version this was (ICS, JB) ?
If it's still rootable, if anyone tried it, etc.
I am still on stock (although rooted) on version 10h which is Android 4.0.4.
If I ever want to try it, should I unroot first ? should I get OTA rootkeeper ?
Thanks,
I won't be able to answer all the questions, but I guess someone else will also contribute.
Its Jelly Bean 4.1.2.
I have tried, but I installed the KDZ file which should be basically the same.. I think. I couldnt rooted it using ZV9 (CurrentRoot.bat). But maybe there is a difference in installing from the KDZ (not OTA). Because the file is 1gb+ so the image starts from scratch.
I liked more the houstonn's stock version. Reason: there are QSlide application, which you can have as windows on your phone (although I don't like them to be in the notification bar all the time)
This is interesting: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2198258
Thanks for the info and the link to the other thread.
I tried updating it, but it brings up an error saying the phone is suspected of rooting then stops.
Makes sense because I was rooted, with busybox and Superuser apk (SuperSu) also installed.
Full Unroot, uninstall, etc.
...
Right now my phone has neither the su binary, nor the superuser apk, nor busybox, etc.
and it still gives off the error when I try the FOTA update.
I never unlocked the bootloader until now, but might as well and just flash the last update directly.
(the FOTA makes you re-download the whole 400+MB each time you try it..)
