[CUSTOM UPDATE] LG2 Patch for Custom Roms - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

I'm doing this from work, so I'll have to clean this up later.
Standard Disclaimers Apply. I have personally tested this on my device multiple times.
WHAT DOES THE LG2 OTA UPDATE CONTAIN?
Simply put? ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. Well mostly nothing, I can't fully confirm that. But I can confirm two things:
1. Removes universal search from Google Quick Search (i.e. search apps, contacts, or anything besides web)
2. Limits your Wifi and 3G horribly (made my SGS3 reject my work wifi for being too weak, with 1-2 bars)
WHAT AM I PROVIDING HERE THEN?
Well, anyone who has received the notification for the OTA knows just how frustrating it is! This should get rid of that, while also updating your modem. Any other 'patching' is removed, as well as the Google Quick Search crippling.
And most importantly, this will flash through CWM no matter what you've changed or removed, so long as you're on LF9.
HOW TO USE:
1. Do not accept OTA update.
2. Download my file to your SD card.
3. Boot into CWM.
4. Flash my file.
5. Reboot phone.
6. Accept OTA update.
7. Reboot phone once OTA fails.

Custom LG2 for Custom ROMS

This is awesome!
Side question: what does this mean for future OTA's? Will subsequent "custom updates" be needed from here on out? Thanks!

Worked perfect! Thanks!

Thanks again for the update! But my paranoid just wants to confirm I get everything flashed correctly...
I accidentally clicked "Update later" when I got prompted (step 6) because I wanted to check the device info. Now I don't get prompted to install the OTA anymore even though I didn't go through the process of downloading it. Should I be seeing the old baseband (LF9) or should that also be LG2?
Thanks!

The baseband is the modem, so LG2. If it's gone, then congrats. Everything else is in place. The only reason the notification remains in the first place, is because the update didn't go through the Android updater.

Must be on LF9... Have the script do those checks?
Don't i recall us going through this before on the OG Epic? =P

RandomKing,
Thanks for the good work. I have my daughter's S3 still on a stock rom and might for a while till I find something really stable for her. What's the issue of using your file on a stock ROM? Will it just not work?

Have you tested this on a stock ROM? So it will work?

I have flashed new ROMs but I still have the Baseband version of L710VPLEN.... I assume I need to flash both OTA updates in order to change my Baseband. If I'm not mistaken, flashing those updates will update my Baseband, but will also un-root my phone. Is there a way to update the baseband without losing root? I have tried to find the answers in the posts here, but I am unable to. Thank you in advance

does anyone have or can post LF9 Modem.zip?? i flashed the new LG2 modem but it killed my 3g speeds...please any help will be appreciated...

Is this zip suppose to end the update pop....I did it but am still getting the update pop up

Yes, the update popup should be gone after you flash this

You shouldn't lose root by updating baseband. I didn't, make sure your use the team epic link for guidance http://www.epiccm.org/2012/06/team-epics-root-from-recovery.html just in case you do...

Thanks for that clarification. I understand that this zip kills the update nag but does it also update the baseband to LG2 where people are having wifi and 3G issues? If so it would be nice to just have a nag killer zip? Or edit the build.prop to show LG2 so that the system thinks its updated?

Take a look in the android dev sections to this forum. If you ever update once rooted, you should be flashing a new ROM (clean or dirty flashing) to receive the next update. Running stock ROM in between a Sammy update and while having the older ROM without the newest update will yield that result.

There are plenty of reasons for rooting but remaining stock (such as: tethering, Droid wall, Titanium Backup to allow me to backup and restore app data, removing bloat, etc).
I have flashed custom rooms in the past on my Evo but right now I am happy with my S3 at stock.

I was in the same boat at you. I put it off for a while but finally decided to update tonight. I followed the steps posted here.
You can update your baseband by flashing a properly packaged official baseband zip, or flash from recovery tool (my preference), like the one here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=29820376. There are also unofficial, or leaked basebands, available to flash from all-in-one zips, such as the one here: http://goo.im/devs/freeza/Galaxy-S-fre3-LIGFirmwareModemAIO.zip.
As far as the build version goes, that does not have to match your baseband (modem). Most of the ICS ROMs are LG8, although there are some LI3 ICS ROMs to choose from. There's also a leaked build of Jellybean, builds LIF & LIG, with a third leak LIH reportedly coming out tomorrow. Once rooted, you can update your build version by flashing the ROM of your choice, based upon the build of your choice.
One of the top developers, and probably the greatest asset to this community, is freeza. He explained the difference very well here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=32095775
That's a long-winded response, but I hope it answered your original question, and helps you out.
Have fun!
Edit: Once you're rooted, you'll still receive OTA update notifications, which will continually annoy you until you choose to update and reboot. Once you reboot, the update will fail because of your custom recovery (you will NOT lose root) and the notification will go away....until the next OTA...

Excuse me for my stupidity but I'm new to android. I'm also using the sprint variant of the s3 and have it rooted with stock rom. However my build number is IMM76D.L710VPALF9. I'm assuming the last 3 are the update versions. What is the current version and how do I update to it?
Also, I'm rooted with Clockwork mod 5.5.0.4. How do I upgrade this to version 6.0.1.2? Will I have to unroot then root again?
Thanks for clearing anything you can up. Don't mean to pirate the OP but I figured I'd post in this thread rather than make a new one. Thanks again.

You can flash a new recovery using ODIN, or Mobile ODIN. I use Mobile ODIN. There's a thread on recoveries here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=31894089

That is one of the reasons that I am rooted... so I can use WiFi Tether. I do not it much. Hardly any data at all. But when I am in a spot and need a wireless connection and I only have my phone it comes in handy.
Some other reasons:
- DroidWall: Lets me block individual apps from accessing the internet.
- AddFree: Block ads in some apps.
why would you do that?

No update via OTA or Kies

Anytime I try to update my phone via OTA, it says connection failed (done so since I bought the phone in June). When I try to update via Kies, it says "This is the latest firmware" Current version: PDA:LG1 / PHONE:LG1 / CSC:LG1 (ATT); Latest firmware version PDA:LG1 / PHONE:LG1 / CSC:LG1 (ATT). I know there have been several updates as I'm on I747UCLG1. I was rooted, but reverted in attempt to exchange out my phone due to battery issues (which were instantly gone after returning to stock). My girlfriend also has the AT&T S3 which has always been stock and is having the same issues. Does anyone know why this is happening or a simple way to update (simple enough to explain to someone who is not tech savvy over the phone)? I just don't know why the phones show there isnt an update when there has been several.

The update after UCLG1 hasn't made it to kies. It's a staggered rollout it seems. Either that or it's been pulled.
I have the exact same issue. My phone says the server is unavailable OTA, and Kies says I have the latest firmware. I took my phone to an AT&T store, and the guys were clueless. My friend got the update on his phone and it's really no big deal, but just keep your fingers crossed it doesn't do this when Jelly Bean comes out.

I had the same issue, LG1 would only show up, couldnt get the LH9 to even show up via OTA, kept telling its is up to date.
So I ended up just grabbing the stock LH9 update.zip that gunnyman put up in another thread and just used that on the stock recovery to update it to LH9.

Thats the post to where gunnyman put the original OTA update.
Take that file, rename it to update.zip and copy it to the root of the internal storage. Then boot into STOCK recovery, not CWM (if you have CWM, you will have to put it back to STOCK recovery) and choose update via zip file, and choose that zip file, it will update just like the OTA does and be identical to stock OTA update. Then you done.

If you are asking me, then no. You need to be on stock recovery and you cannot have any FROZEN apps via Titanium Backup as the update itself is an offset patch, so it cannot find the file (because you froze it) then it will fail.

I downloaded the file and renamed it to update.zip. I saved it my internal SD card, and it's not showing up in stock recovery. Did I do something wrong? Oh yeah, if I update this way, can I still connect to Kies or will my device be "modified"?

I dont think it will work on internal, I cant remember though. I believe I put it on my External SD as I have one in there. If you have one, put it in there and it should work. It will not show "modified" on status, that only shows up if you are rooted.

Yes. This is an ORIGINAL STOCK update, its not modified in any way shape or form, so dont worry, its not going to affect your future updatability. That only gets affected when you are rooted. Updates like this one where its patch offset based, the update will fail due to when you root most people freeze apps. That fails automatically on patch offset updates.
Jellybean may be a full udpate which Kies will do.

Rooted stock rom - can I update?

I searched and couldn't find an answer, maybe I'm just a bad searcher. I'm using the rt66 root injected stock rom and this morning I checked "software update" under "about phone" and it started downloading a 330+ mb file. I'm assuming this is the JB update that was just released, will it install correctly or should I stop the download? I don't want to brick my phone and I can wait until I'm home to update. Thanks.

IIRC I tried the same thing, it just gave me an error message, didn't actually update anything. You can try of course, I don't think it'll work. Also, if you're already root, you should probably install CWMRecovery or TWRP Recovery and make a backup of your phone, just so you can feel safe about it.
I would make a backup, go ahead and try the update. It'll probably fail and not harm your phone, or update properly. Good luck, and post back with results if you can, I'd like to know what happens
Thanks for the reply. I already have twrp and a nandroid backup. I think I'll wait until I get home to try and apply the update.
Use voodoo ota rootkeeper.

Just to let you know for when you get home from work, your update will fail. You're going to need to have Stock Recovery. There is a flashable floating around here somewhere.
The OTA will check for /system integrity. Meaning that it will look for all the /system/apps that are supposed to be there (meaning if you've deleted any bloat and not just froze it-fail), stock recovery, and NO ROOT (hence the OTA Rootkeeper). If any 1 of those are not as they should be, the OTA will fail.
Thanks for the reply again. So the easiest thing for me to do is first install root keeper and then find and flash the stock recovery. The only thing I've done is flash the root66 and then installed twrp, I haven't frozen any apps or deleted anything.

Thanks for the help. An FYI for anybody else wondering, if you have the root66 root injected rom on your phone the OTA will work and install. I've been told that its fine too do it, youll just lose root access, but mine had failed when I was rooted, so I just odined back to stock. Also, its recommended that you do a factory reset after the update. Had problems with Wifi calling myself, before I performed a Factory Reset. The root66 file for JB should be up soon. Its says uploading

If you update via Kies and then do a factory reset, you should get what you're looking for.
Completely stock, no root.
Try it out.

I agree, Kies does suck, but it's the only way I've found to update and keep the ROM completely stock if the OTA fails. It updates via download mode, so it shouldn't matter if you're rooted, or even if you have a custom recovery.
I tried updating to JB using the OTA this morning, and it failed, but Kies worked fine.
Thsts whst the full fw Im hosting is for. You can flash it via odin if the ota fails. Just a better way imo. Glad you got it regardless though!

I got it too. I notice that I can now make a Google Hangout video call over LTE.
It seems like it's running smoother now

Anyone kind enough to make a flashable Baseband only UCAMH3 zip? I would love to try the new Baseband but I am only a Tmobile Rom.
Hopefully someone will zip it up for all of us to try out the modem and if stock rooted whatever else is in the update.

Uh no I don't believe that's the case cause it was real glitchy the days leading up to gettanding this. Messenger would freeze and fc along with Internet. Can't Judge on battery life yet but it seems about the same.
Its def smoother, as a matter of fact smoother than my s4 hopefully Samsung gets the 4.3 update right

Got the same update. My sound profiles went back to factory settings.... meh... haha more work for me to do on a Sunday

I do not know about smoothness or battery but after updating, Bluebox Security Scanner shows I am patched for both the 8219321 and the 9695860 bugs. I cannot remember which one it was but before the update I was only patched for one. Root also survived.
Just curious how the update isnt breaking root. It is breaking mine, just on stock with UCAMA4 rooted fine, grabs the update and installs and *poof*, no root
OK, maybe I'm just really really stupid (probably HAHA) but every time I've tried to DL this and the thing reboots, it reboots into TWRP, and there I'm stuck - would have thought it would have tried to install itself outside of TWRP recovery, or am I really missing some point here?
OTA update requires stock recovery to install.

I did a recovery install via Kies to get my Note 2 back to stock which removed root. I then made my phone download software updates which now has it at 4.1.2 with Baseband Version I317UCAMH3. I changed the day numerous times and tried Software Updates again but it says I am now at the most current version so I then rooted the phone again! Mine still has the ripple lockscreen as well. I'm not sure why yours disappeared!

+1 There are a number of folks posting they took the MH3 OTA update... what is being asked here is if one of you could kindly post the OTA update file (i.e., on dropbox, then share the dropbox link). In the past, ATT OTAs were stored in " /cache/fota" folder. There are folks here on XDA who can extract the kernel... extract the modem... etc from that OTA and repackage in flashable zips for the rest of the community to try (those who either cannot get the MH3 OTA to download/install... or for those who do not want to flash back to stock in order to take the MH3 OTA). Can someone who has updated to MH3 take a look (via your favorite file explorer) and see if they still have the MH3 update in /cache/fota folder? Thanks.

New ATT update E98020H?

There seems to be a new update can anyone figure out what changed and if it is worth to update?

Good question from the looks of the information found in the link its still 4.4.2 just with some security updates. From a view doesn't seem like it but also wouldn't hurt to see it offers some improvements.
Android version: 4.4.2
Baseband version: APQ8064/MDM9x15M
Software Version: E98020h
Kernel version: 3.4.0
Build number: KOT49I.E98020h
If your own E98020g then the update is just only 5mb
E98020g -> E98020h: 5.15 MB (Wi-Fi not required)
Then again after the stunt AT&T pulled graying out the APN in the last update its pretty much at your own risk at this point.
Alright, I went ahead and let the update download and install. Upon the phone rebooting, it is now stuck in CWM recovery. I can't seem to get out of it. I guess the update is not friendly with custom recoveries.
Anybody have suggestions on what to do? I found similar posts on the LG G2 forums, but they talk about connecting the phone to adb while still in CWM. Every time I try that, I get "device offline" and can't send any commands.
This sounds the same as last update three months ago.

As far as I've ever known you always need to have stock recovery with a update like that.... You probably have to use lg flash tools to get back to stock ... IMO

I used this method with this image the last time I went back stock.
I may just pass on this update as it is too big of a PITA to go back stock and then re-customize everything.
Saved my life!

I want to thank you very much!
The only reason I even created a profile on this forum is o thank you! Yes, clicked the thank you button!
Worked like a charm! I never heard of towelroot until now, and it took about 3 seconds to download and another 3 to install.
Worked like a charm no issues sir.
THANK YOU AGAIN!
That is the easiest root I have ever done in my life!

Sounds like you're in the same boat i was. Sucks.
I ended up using this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=44983841, but i needed to do it slightly differently. It gave me a lot of grief last night, but I ended up getting it to work if i pulled the usb in and out of the phone when the lgflashtool showed that it was "ready". I can't fully remember the exact combination that worked, but i finally got the kitkat tot to flash and then update and towel root. If you have any more questions, let me know and I'll try to step through it when i make it to my laptop.

For what it's worth I am stock rooted and was able to do the update with no problems. I would suggest if your not sure of what your doing to look through the forums and find a safe way to unroot, go back to factory rom and then do the update. It will save you hours of trouble. Good luck
Lol I must have hit the button while sleeping ..... Buddy called me and I remember hitting the notification area ...boom stuck recovery loop... Its all good now I got it all figured out and restored my stock kk. Pain in the ass lol. Is that update even worth it ... What all is in it ? Nothing major I'm guessing
