Open apps using Google now - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I was trying to open apps using Google now but was unable to open it so what are the commands to open apps or play music from. Google now????
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app

As a general rule, Google voice actions doesn't launch apps. It'll launch the dialer, messages, maps, navigation, the browser and some of those basic things.

There's a thread somewhere about the nexus 7 tablet manual that is free thru google play books that has a section with all the commands for the now search app. I don't have the link available.

It would suck if Google limited now's ability to Google's own apps. That's the worst thing about its retarded cousin, siri

"Play Beastie Boys" works on my phone...

I've got the same problem. Everytime I ask something (e.g. call xxxx, play song xxxx, what's the Yankee's score), it'll go to the browser. I went through all the settings and can't find anything.

If I remember correctly, launching Play Music via Google Now only works if you're in the US and the music is uploaded to the cloud.

Instead of 'play', have you tried to ask: 'listen to' --- [artist] or [song title]? It works for me. It should even ask you to choose between Google Music, YouTube, and any other music app you already have installed (like Rdio, Jango, Slacker, etc).
Also, make sure you've followed this guide on how to set up Google Now:

Same thing happens, Now will show the "link" to Google Music, but then the browser automatically opens up over it ... It also happens when I try "call xxx", the contacts open up (because of multiple phones for this person), but then almost immediately, a browser opens showing the Google results ...
There's gotta be a setting somewhere to disable auto browser results ....

If I say, "Text Melissa -text here-" it works. But if I say "Text Mom -text here-" it won't. I have to say "Send text to Mom" for it to send a text. Same with calling. So my suggestion is to play around with the wording.

Change your settings to 'always search from Google.com instead of your local domain.' Then it'll work. I'm in india, did this, and then it started showing cards/doing actual voice actions.

Google Now can open apps. First you must say (Open app) then say the name of the app that you want open.

Go to settings>phone search and untick the browser setting. That should sort it.

You don't have to uncheck browser in settings. You can launch application by saying "launch [app name]".
Maybe you have to change both system language and voice input language to English(US).
I'm able to play music too even I'm outside US.

didn't know i could do this. should be fun

More info about Google Now
Ok, the option to listen to music works, but it will give you the option to listen to songs that you have stored in your phone with the default music application, it's not like it'll stream music from the web so use it confidently. Also, following all the set up instructions for Google Now exposed in a previous post helps a lot. A personal note: I would say that Google Now works pretty much better with searches on the web and in my experience S-Voice on my phone (Samsung Galaxy S3) works better with the phone's applications. Basically both of them are good, but each one has a strength tha the other does not. Hope it helps as the thread of this post helped me.

Chrome to phone - rocks!

Just thought I'd give everyone a heads up - I can't believe I have lived without this for so long. Just fantastic.
Agree, fantastic tool.
Im using mozilla as there is an add-on for that too.
So, except for google maps and youtube videos what other uses for ChromeToPhone are there?
Well, you can push any link to your phone and not depend on QR codes. I think thats cool. Just an example, you come across a nice picture you want to use as a wallpaper. Just push a button, beats fiddling with bluetooth/usb after DLing or even using a QR code generator.
Totally agree!
This's just amazing!
I love it and I'm sure I'll use it often!

You're able to dial a phone numbers. You just have to select the phone number in the browser then click on the button. It'll directly send it to your phone and open the dialer application.
Also you're able to select a text and after you click the button in the browser it will be copied in your Android clipboard
Totally! I've used it a couple of times today already.
The fact that it sends maps straight to Google Maps on the phone is gonna be super handy for trips.
I was looking for this. Awesome tool!
It is cool, but it needs to be able to go the other way too.
How many times have you clicked on a page that's slow or cumbersome on your phone, one that's just better suited to your laptop browser? Would be so handy to be able to send from phone to chrome.
It was raised on the code.google site but they said they're not working on it
i found firefox/chrome plugin but i also want IE8 plugin, any one found this yet?
yep, tried it yesterday on mozilla firefox and it works great

It is a puch service so your phone doesn't actively check for the links sent to the phone but it is pushed to the phone and then the phone downloads it.
Just how the push email works.
Clever stuff!
Can you use it for file transfer, eg put the file into dropbox, copy the shared link, Chrome2Phone and download from the phone's browser?
EDIT: Just realised, there's a Dropbox app, er, for that.

Is there any way to disable the notification sound for this app. I know i can disable notification sounds, but i would like to disable it only for this...
And maybe I should ask this on the Maps brut thread, but when sending a link from google maps it opens in stock Maps app instead of Maps brut (which I chose for default), if I uninstall stock Maps app it just won't load the link.
Does anyone knows a way to launch maps links with Maps brut?
thanks!

Canadian Gnex Users, where do you get your music?

Google Music is onlyavailable in the USA. Is there a similar service in Canada?
Thanks
Once you have created an account (do it on your computer thru a proxy), you will be able to use Google Music in Canada. You can't buy music but you can still stream/download for offline use.
There is a guide how to use Google music outside of US here in xda. I followed that guide and using Google music in Korea.

I was able to use proxy very easily. Using Firefox browser, a plugin called "stealthy" is used, and is visible, once installed in the top right corner of your screen. When you want the proxy turned on, click the stealth bomber and it turns green. Want it off? Click it again and it turns red!
I am able to go to google music anytime using this method, and works flawlessly!

Or basically anywhere you would normally get music before Google Music popped onto the scene only a few short months ago. Odd question.
I use Microsoft Zune. Music is generally cheaper than other places and the UI is great. My sister and I buy a Zune pass together. The music is DRM protected, but there are ways around that...

Mainly iTunes but that's due to a lack of options. I always check hmvdigital.ca first though and if it's the same price there, I'll get it from there instead of iTunes. hmvdigital songs are for the most part 320kpbs and are DRM free and you can download them again and again as many times as you want.

Is this still working for you? I have been using the services in Canada without issue until today, now the Music Manager won't upload additional songs. Methinks Google may have caught on.
I use 7digital. They have a Canadian store and an Android app so you can buy right to the phone if you like. The stuff I've purchased has been 320kbps DRM-free. Easy as pie.
I've been using Google music in Canada since it launched with absolutely no issues. I used a program to fake my IP for the invite, as far as I know you no longer need an invite now. Music manager works flawlessly as well, overall the whole setup is beautiful and I love it.

The Google Play Music app lets you listen to your music collection anywhere. All your music is stored online, so no need to worry about syncing or storage space.
* Music purchases from Google Play automatically appear in the app.
* Add up to 20,000 more songs from your personal music collection on your computer for free.
* Access your entire music library instantly with the Google Play Music app, and save your favorites for offline playback.
* Share a free full play of the songs you purchase from Google Play with your friends on Google+.
* Available in the U.S. only.
This is a good player. pair it with an equalizer found in play store and its perfect. Just sharing.

Sorry, i cant post links I will add them later.
So here is the instructions. Maybe it sounds a bit crazy, but i hope you can understand it.
Thanks to pl4cid for this instructions!
This is an instruction how you can use Google Music outside of USA.
I found it in a German forum (Source: http://www.android-hilfe.de/showthread.php?t=190873 ) so it’s only a translation.
What you need:
- PC with Internet
- Google Account
- Galaxy W with root
- (App: Root Explorer)
Start:
Step 1: To registry on music.google.com you need an US IP. You can use this tool: http://cyberghostvpn.com (or a proxy or an alternative tool) to get a new IP and to registry on music.google.c.o.m
Notice: This step is only important for registration, after this you can sync your music from every pc without a fake IP.
Step 2: After registration with VPN/Proxy you can download the Music Manager from Google. It’s better to “stay” in the VPN when you installed the Music Manager and starts the first time.
Step 3: In the music manager you can choose where you want to upload your music (iTunes, media player, …) Choose something and upload some tracks.
Step 4: you can close the music manager and VPN/proxy. Now start the music manager without a VPN/proxy to sync your music. The first start will .So be a little patient, it works in EVERY CASE.
Now you are ready to take your music to stream to the cloud. Now you can hear your music in the browser. Next step is to make the music available on the way with the appropriate Google App.
Step 5: !Important!: make a backup of your music.apk (system/app)!! Copy the apk to your sd-card!!
Step 6: go to system/app and delete music.apk. You have got a backup.
Step 7: copy the new music.apk to system/app. Now you have to set the correct permissions (rw-r - r -), so like everyone else APKs in system / app.
Step 8: do a reboot.
(Step 8.1: I'm not sure whether the step is necessary, but it will also help to exclude potential problems: Go into Settings -> Applications -> All -> Music (version should be latest now).
Clear the cache and then also the data.)
Step 9: Now you can use the app. Now, under account settings should be a new entry, here you can set the sync. In the app you can use the menu button to adjust everything.
Have fun
Please ask if you have problems or you dont understand something!

I added the links.

Yes, MarketEnabler is working fine. Also, you need to use just once MarketEnabler to download google play music app. If you want to download it again later, you can find the app in my apps section in the market, you dont need MarketEnabler. Besides, you can get updates too, just like other apps.

It doesn't show status messages, status, nor does it allow you to set either one. This is a terrible step back from Google Talk. Not to mention it forcibly lumps all of your Google+ contacts in with your GTalk contacts.
That doesn't help me. I don't talk to those people. I use GTalk to talk to a select few people who have limited SMS per month and one person who uses a tablet with mobile data and a dumbphone.
Google really dropped the ball with this pile of junk app. The new iteration of the Music app isn't any better. They've been cocking everything up since the horrid 4.2 lockscreen abomination.

[Q] S-Voice mod possible? or get a differnet app?

I am wondering if it would be possible to alter the TTS engine in S-Voice. like maybe just replacing the TTS file in the S-Voice folder or something like that.
I like S-Voice but it is kinda slow.. and sounds like GARBAGE... the voice is super clunky and sounds like the equivelent to the old microsoft voice.. just female version. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sIHGiVNlH9k my S voice doesnt sound ANYTHING like this guys S-Voice.
I tried setting my Voice TTS to google but S-Voice doesnt change. this really bums me out. i have a scottish accent TTS voice i LOVE but its for a program called acapella. and while that app is installed it does show up under the TTS options again it does not overwrite the S-Voice and the Google Brittish accent i have would work but again it wont replace the S-Voice sound.
So i am just wondering if its possible to transplant a TTS file into a different app assuming its the same format..
if not what are some other alternatives to S-Voice.
I like being able to say "stop" or "snooze" on my alarm...
i like being able to wake my phone with my voice...
i like the ability to double press home to open the app
and i like all the features that i can control, settings, timer, texting, ect..
so what are my alternatives that i can get without lsing functionality but get customizble voice options.

i recommend the note.. you cannot go wrong.. it does have S-Voice.. but.. it also has Google Now.. so you are not stuck with either.. and anything else you get would be an app available to any newer android.. you just lose some functionallity with the apps not designed for samsung phones.

I suspect you are confusing things up with your question..
Basically there are 3 bits of software at work here..
1) The Text to Speech engine that reads out messages/asks you questions in hands free mode etc
2) the Voice Recognition Engine that processes your commands into words when you say things like "hello galaxy"
3) the app that appears when you say "hello galaxy and uses both 1 and 2 to act as a personal agent for you..
it seems you want to change the voice your note speaks to you in.. this link has a tutorial with pictures on how to install more voices for the built-in engine
http://www.androidheadlines.com/2013/11/higher-quality-text-speech-voice-galaxy-note-3.html
In addition you can also swap in settings for S-Voice between the Google and Samsung recognition engine
hopefully this helps somewhat

2) the Voice Recognition Engine that processes your commands into words when you say things like "hello galaxy"
3) the app that appears when you say "hello galaxy and uses both 1 and 2 to act as a personal agent for you..
it seems you want to change the voice your note speaks to you in.. this link has a tutorial with pictures on how to install more voices for the built-in engine

In addition you can also swap in settings for S-Voice between the Google and Samsung recognition engine
hopefully this helps somewhat

No i understand how it works. When i say "hello Galaxy" the technology designed by Sensory called "Truly Handsfree" activates, recognizes that i have said the command and launches the App S-Voice
Then when i say something... The voice recognition engine interperates what ive said and inputs it into the app.
Then the app (in this case S-Voice) responds using a TTS engine.
My issues is that i cant change the engine that S-Voice responds with other then setting a different language and having it talk to me in Dutch or some other nonsence.
I have already downloaded the HQ Brittish accent under samsungs TTS settings. This option selected does not change the voice the S-Voice responds with
Also.. if i uninstall S-Voice.. the option to "play music, send texts, snooze my alarm, take pictures, and wake my phone" go away.
ive tested this... twice...
So my origional question is still the same.. how can i get better quality TTS for the S-Voice app inparticular. The HQ UK voice is not even in my top 5.. there is a lovely Scottish acccent TTS that i have and i would love to be able to make that work. but if i cant transplant the TTS then the UK will suffice.. but even that will not work.
