Mightytext
Mightytext is amazing and works really well. It also has a chrome plugin, so it's great if you also want to send texts from your PC. It also alerts you to phone calls and if your battery is running low.
But... it doesn't work with whatsapp, just sms.
Anyone know of an app or a workaround that will allow control of whatsapp via tablet to phone?

Texting

Is there a way to receive texts and respond to them on my N7 without using a new number? I think there may be some way to do it with Google Voice, but I'm not entirely sure. Help would be greatly appreciated, I don't like this new number thing.
Why don't you try tablet talk it pairs right up with your cell phone via Bluetooth or wifi. The best part is that you don't have to get a new number either.

Google Voice works fine (as long as you have a GV number).
I'll check out tablet talk.
I could use Google Voice, but I don't want to have to give my Google Voice number out to everyone instead of the number everyone already has.
Thanks guys, I'll post back once I've tried this stuff.
EDIT: Tablet talk is great. Everyone that wants to text/call from their tablet should get this (granted that they don't use GV already).
Is there any free app that does what Tablet Talk does?

theres also DeskSMS from Koush that sends your texts to Google Talk. Doesnt use the extra battery that bluetooth would use

I probably will but I'm trying to save as much as I can for stuff that I can't otherwise get for free.
Tablet talk is amazing
SyncSMS has been my choice for the last year or so, but i'm trying DeskSMS out.
You can also use the Facebook messenger app or Google+ messenger. Works just like texting.

DeskSMS is good, but don't like having an extra app open to look at my SMS...works well on my laptops, easy to use etc
MySMS was hit or miss, UI is laggy and sometimes SMS wouldn't sync right away.
SyncSMS worked well when I tried the beta, but I didn't get around to purchasing the full version since I didn't use it a lot.
Going to check out TabletTalk later today, since I have been using my I/O N7 a lot lately

Connect to mobile (SMS, Whatsapp)?

Hi,
I just got my Nexus 7 a few days ago and am wondering if anyone has come up with a solution to connect the tablet with my mobile. What I would like to do is receive and send text messages on the tablet, routed through my phone and if possible the same with Whatsapp.
I know you can get Whatsapp working on the Nexus 7, but not with the same phone number as the mobile, at least not at the same time.
Tablet Talk App
This is quite nice for SMS and it also alerts you to phone calls.
Doesn't do whatsapp, but I have no idea what does
I use tablet talk wicked app

personally, i use MySMS..
I went with Tablet Talk and it really is great.
Anybody know of a solution for Whatsapp?
Maybe email the developer of Tablet talk and ask him about adding support for whatsapp
From the reviews I am reading, it's pretty amazing. Sounds good.
I sent a feature request for Whatsapp support - I'll report here when I get a reply

he is right, just make a backup with TB on your phone, then just copy the 3 achievement to the TB folder on your tablet, do the restore with TB and it work, i have it on my Iconia A100 and my phone :good:
This app works flawlessy in my opinion.
Koush (ClockworkMod) has just released TabletSMS, works a treat. Easy set-up with a free trial period as well.

I'll give restoring whatsapp a try. If it's as easy as that...

i also used the Titanium method. Do you receive the same message on both devices? When I send a message from my Nexus 7, I only receive the response on my Nexus 7, not on my phone. The same when I send from my phone, I only receive the response on my phone only. So in my situation i can not receive the same message on both devices. You can?

I've been using Mightytext. I really like the computer apps/notifications and that it uses my phone number. It works in the N7 browsers but no apps or notifications as of yet.

WiFi SMS &/or MMS Apps

I'm interested in people with direct experience using apps on the N7 that enable text messaging over a WiFi connection. I'm interested in ones that truly allow you to send & receive messages to/from cell phones - not ones dependant upon email (as I believe gtalk is).
PS - The UI has to be easy to use, as this is getting setup on an N7 for my Father-in-Law - and he's 62.

Really? I've always thought there were apps available that allowed true WiFi messaging. Some of the ones I've been looking at are:
HeyWire
textPlus
Talkatone
In the reading I've done so far, these all seem to be apps that allow one to do what I'm aiming for. I started this topic thread to see if anyone on the N7 has either direct experience with any of these, or any other apps that are similar in function/purpose.
You're saying that even these require a phone to be tethered through WiFi, or BT though?

This is not true. CLOUD SMS is an app that does not require blue tooth, or for the phone and tablet to be connected to the same Wifi. It is simple to use, your phone can be on data, or wifi(doesn't have to be same location), and you can send and receive from phone or tab. It cost 99 cents in the play store. I've followed it through the beta process here on xda and I would highly recommend it.

The OP is talking about texting from a tablet over WiFi with no phone at all.
Can't be done, texts are sent over mobile data and not WiFi.
Google voice may be able to do it, but not sure.

Doesn't tablet talk require that you be on the same wifi with both the phone and tablet, or be connected by bluetooth? Cloud SMS does not require either of these, my phone can be at home and my tablet can be at work connected to wifi, this is a fact, I use it every day. If I'm wrong about Tablet Talk requirements(haven't used it several months) then I apologize. I may have misunderstood the question, but the information I provided, in response to your comment that the phone and tablet have to be near each other, was correct. But your "tone" is both unnecessary and not appreciated. I was just trying to provide info on an app that I am familiar with. I'm not sure what your problem is.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using XDA Premium HD app
I use Verizon messages on mine. It is Dependant on having a Verizon smartphone and being on the same wifi, but works like a charm for me. Let's you send and receive SMS amend MMS and pretty much anything your phone can do and doesn't require a separate plan for the tablet
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
Mighty Text let's you send texts through your phone using your pc. I am using the beta for nexus 7, so when I get a text on my Optimus G, I get a notification on my Nexus 7 and have the ability to respond to the text using the tablet, and no need to use the telephone. As far as the texter goes, they think you are texting from your phone. Even better, anything you do on the tablet shows up in your telephone's text app. Mighty Text also allows you to keep a history of the text. I hope this helps.

This is correct. I use Cloud SMS everyday. I hate connecting my phone to wifi, but it still uses the phones mobile data to send the sms through the internet to my wifi tablet. Also when im away from home, i tether them together and it also works perfectly like that as well. I hate taking my phone out of my pocket while im on my tablet, this way I never have to.

It's less expensive. I don't know for tablet talk but the Dev of cloud SMS is super fast to respond and to add features. You can find his thread on xda.
Also it s not possible without phone. Maybe with a 3g model and the sms app? Not even sure it will work...
Why not just set up a Google phone# and side load whatsApp? I have it on my n7 linked to my Google voice number. No problems. No needed to target to phone or data. True wifi sms ... And free.

Yea Google voice lets you text via the tablet independent of or phone. You can even pay a one time fee of 20 dollars to import or existing phone number but if not just download the app on or tab and or good to go. And you can download the app on or phone if you want to text through that away from ur tablet

I remember reading about a app called Tablet talk. Basically from what I understand you connect the devices through Bluetooth or WiFi (maybe either) and you can get you calls and text sent to you tablet (assuming you close enough for a connection).
A quick search turned this up (apparently there is more than one app):

Mighty text is also great for what you want. It will sheet you phonecalls and even allow you to ext from all of your devices and your PC.

I'd recommend MightText as well, but with their privacy service being such they can share your info with certain groups when they want, kills it for me.
I bought Tablet Talk a couple days ago and haven't looked back. I mean, it is a secure BT or Wifi connection just between the devices you activate, no outside party or servers involved. It's really quick, has quick popup, calling through BT headset, etc. I find it to be fantastic for what I need/want.

Didn't hear anything. Read through MightyText's quite creepy privacy policy. http://mightytext.net/privacy When you start using a "free" service, you become the service.
The one I talk about wouldn't be able to as it is a simple "ad-hocish" type network between the two devices. No internet, no servers, no data, just devices talking to each other. http://www.tablettalkapp.com/faq/
I am fully just a user mate who digs the app I suggested. Use it all the time here at home and at my job. Sorry if I sound like I may be selling it, once again I just really enjoy the privacy factor of it.
Wouldn't having Google voice on both devices solve your problem? I have Google voice linked to my HTC One as my voicemail client, and I can see all my sms messages, missed calls and voicemails on both devices, although the ui leaves much to be desired. Haven't tried to make any calls on my N7 though so I can't speak on that one.
