T-Mobile Wifi Calling Issue? - T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy SIII

Hi!
I don't know if this is an actual "issue" I'm having with my phone but when I am about 15 feet away from my router and in my living room trying to make a wifi call, I am unable to do so. If I am within a few feet of my router, I am able to make wifi calls. I would like to add that when I am in my living room, I can use wifi to go on the internet and it works perfectly.
I called up T-Mobile and spoke to their technical support department and was told if you are more than 15 feet away from your router and/or there is a wall that is separating you from the router, you will not be able to get wifi calling. Is this information correct? Thanks!

its hard to explain but..uh...
my old phone I could be outside..in my detached garage (and wifi router is below ground in basement) and get wifi calling on my old phone.
on this phone...if i walk to the other end of the house or upstairs its pretty much game over.
Wifi on this phone just isn't so hot, range is probably only 1/2 - 2/3 of what I've seen on my old phones, not much we can do about it, to my knowledge unless some kind of software tweak can help but I haven't seen it yet.

[Q] Hotspot ON turns wifi OFF

I'm still new to smartphones/Androids...
After experimenting with the lastest update, it appears to me that turning on the hotspot option automatically turns off WiFi reception, and vice versa. If I'm wrong about that, please let me know.
Otherwise, I was a surprised and a little disappointed at that, since I can think of several instances in which it would be very useful to establish a wireless connection to the G2, and then re-serve that out as a hotspot.
I'm wondering if it's a hardware, legal, software, or simple greed reason that prevented TMO from making that option available?
Yes the hotspot feature doesnt serve as a repeater of sorts for wifi, it simply turns your 3G 4G signal to wifi. Imagine if you could do that though. You could share your wifi to yourself and somebody on another device could make a wifi call through your wifi, being repeated through your router. Clearly this would cause a glitch in the time/space continuum.

Are you for real? To create the hotspot you're using your wireless card, the same one you'd normally be using to connect to wifi. Greed has little to do with this short of the phone only having a single wireless card. But no worries, laptops can't do this, either, unless they have a second wireless card.
It's a hardware limitation. The wifi chip can only do one thing at a time: either connect to an existing wireless network as a client, or serve it's own internet. Not both.
Got it. Thank you!
first id like to say lol to the time space joke
next... why on earth would u even want to get a wifi signal from ur g2... and then broadcast the signal you get from the wifi? why not just connect whatever your gonna connect to the g2 straight to the source..?
If you are on an airplane using Wifi (which is paid, and usually cheaper from a phone than from a laptop), and someone you want to broadcast that Wifi signal to your laptop and a partner's laptop --- thus not paying twice. It could be useful then.
You can do one laptop with wired tether, but not two or more.

Yeah, you can. Share the wifi through the laptop.

Well, I know now that re-serving/repeating a wifi signal is a physical impossibility with the G2; however, to answer your question, there are several instances where such a capability would be useful:
1. Our company's wireless network is pretty secure. We do also have a server for guest access but the password changes daily. So, if a vendor or other person drops by and wants to show me a demo or catalog that's on-line, I have to hunt down a tech guy who knows today's password. That's been a bit of a time-waste to me in the past.
2. I'm on the road with a few colleagues. I get my hotel room's wireless access set up but I sometimes have to fiddle with my other various wireless devices to get them to work and a colleague might bring a laptop over to my room if we want to work on something. It's not unusual these days for road warriors to take a wireless router with them just for these circumstances.
3. I'm at the airport with a couple colleagues and we're all working. If we all need to get on-line, we each have to buy an hour's access (which never, ever gets fully used) at $10 a pop.
4. I'm at some research facility or client's and I manage to get the wireless key for their network. But, while I'm there, other colleagues drift in and out and it's always another mad dash for them to find the sacred piece of paper with the key.
Now, there are various ways to solve all of the above (and all of them are real-world experiences), but by in each case the easiest and most economical would be for me to re-serve a wireless signal and give my key to my vendors/associates, if the G2 actually had that capability. I know it doesn't and can't now.
Still love it, though.
There's nothing wrong that mobile hotspot and wifi can't co-exist (one is server and another is client).
Same thing happens on my nexus one.
dude seriously

WiFi connection issues

I have numerous devices that I connect to my work WiFi, but for some reason my new Sprint Epic 4G Touch will not hold a connection to the WiFi. Sometimes it connects fine, other times it says "obtaining IP address".
Any thoughts or tips would be appreciated.
Thanks

WiFi
I believe he commented having problems with WIFI, which Sprint has no control over.
I have observed similar issues. It was exciting getting the phone to pop up on Spotify on my computer without doing anything, but shortly thereafter it seemed like the WIFI was not really working.
In my house, my Evo 3Ds have full bars when connecting to WIFI, and always works. Last night, on the E4gT, I had barely one bar (on the WIFI symbol) and I kept not being able to get emails. Then, I tried playing HBO Go and MAX Go, and I could only hear but not see anything. I got no error messages, except once got the "this is an audio only stream. For video, please get a better signal or connect to WIFI". I rechecked and I was connected to WIFI. I did a speedTest with Ookla, 22MBPS...Then I changed servers (in the Ookla program) and tried again. It went down to 400kbps.
The night before, both the WIFI and the 3G symbols were on at the same time. The 3G symbol didn't seem to be colored, so I figured it was on sleep mode, but then again, the speeds were slow so it could be WIFI was being screwy.
Can't guarantee there's something wrong with the WIFI, but it definitely felt like it had issues on my part. Whether that was connecting and looking for IP or something else, I'm not sure.
I'll keep an eye on the lookout for any answers to your issue.
Thanks for the response. Between the WiFi issue and a separate issue I am having with dropped signals, this phone may be heading back to Sprint.

Had the same problem, wifi signal with no color 3g on,when i went into wifi settings its always scaning...
I'm having lots of wifi issues as well. I had to lay my e4gt down right next to my dual-band e4200 to get a good signal, but even with a good signal, the phone sometimes pauses for minutes when trying to download or browse the web. And if the wifi signal is weak, I get no data transfer at all.
WoW, so far I have had no issues with wifi. Hell even Kies in wifi mode works good.
Normal wifi linked to my router works great.
Wifi direct works great
Kies in wifi mode works great.
I have never missed a email or txt msg. Streaming audio and video from the web is great, no stutter or issues to report. Grabing apps from the market is super fast.
I am with Time Warner and my internet speed is set to 15 meg down with burst to 30 meg down - I get a solid 15 meg down, 1 meg upload solid.
I am using both wired and wireless with my Linksys router.
It might help (statistically) if folks with/without wifi problems noted which signal was connecting (g/b/n/2.4ghz/5ghz/...)
3G instead of WIFI
I'm guessing you're into something there.
WIFI on, 3G icon shows => using 3G instead of WIFI.
I've also noticed those "minute" delays on using 4G. 4G gets up to 5 MBPS at my office. Evo 3D was getting up to 6.5MBPS. However, the wind could be blowing north instead of south, or a bird could have passed by the 4G signal path or...<insert silly remarks here>
Nonetheless, I get 4G. But even then, I'll open my mail to check a message and I'll have to wait for a minute and nothing will happen. Go back to inbox, then back to the message, nothing. Signal shows 4G on Zzz status as indicating that I'm not trying to use it (but is available). When it works, it's fast, but then it does not always work, which shows concern. So if we have problems with WiFi, and 4G, and 3G connection sucks, for a phone specially designed to be a multimedia monster...it's hard to stream without issues...
I'll be doing some more tests. 14 day return policy sucks, but have silly Best Buy protection plan, and I'm guessing they might still abide to their own 30 day return policy for Rewards members...
Now, I've heard of people complaining about complete crash of their radio, where there will be no signal whatsoever to make/receive calls, sms, data, etc. I haven't experienced these, and I'm still on stock, and I probably just jinxed myself too...sigh... But I wonder if the two issues are somehow related.
It could be software related, maybe need an update, or a better-than-original kernel, or who knows.
I did do the following changes:
RTSP Proxy Address changed to 0.0.0.0
RTSP Proxy Port to 0
HTTPPD Proxy Address to 0.0.0.0
HTTPPD Proxy Port to 0
But I still have same issues.
In the other hand, I can go to the HBOGo website and somewhat see videos (it's very cumbersome).

My Linksys router model = WRT54GL
Channel = channel 6 - 2.437 GHZ
Now how do you find out what signal I am connected with since I am using "mixed" wireless network mode.
Note in my wireless network mode I only have 4 settings -
a. disabled
b. mixed
c. B-only
d. G-only
So by the looks of it I can only do B and G modes on my Linksys router.
Well this is very interesting. I sat in the family room with my old epic 4g in one hand and my new e4gt in the other hand. epic 4g doesn't do 5ghz so I used 2.4ghz N for both phones. My epic 4g had 5 bars on wifi and my e4gt had 1 bar side by side. I ran a speed test on both phones. My epic 4g got 15mbs (15,000k) down and 3mbs (3000k) up. My e4gt got 1.5mbs (1500k) down and 1.5mbs (1500k) up. So, my new super phone is exactly 10 times slower on my home wifi, apparently due to very low signal. I tried my e4gt on 5ghz N as well, but it was even slower. Not good. I may have to return the e4gt and keep the old Epic 4g. I like the new phone, but the wifi and 3g signal issues won't work for me.
I wow, 10 times slower. Obviously this is a major flaw, but why isnt' everyone having the problem? I actually drained my battery yesterday trying to connect to WiFi
Supposedly they stopped giving out free raves from now on on

It would be great if others would test theirs and report back. Maybe I got a lemon and need to return it?
My problem with WiFi is it isn't switching from one channel to another. I have 3 wireless access points with the same SSID on 3 different channels. The phone locks onto the first one and never switches to a better signal unless the signal degrades to 0. All my other wireless devices will switch as I roam around the building.
Also, I've noticed that even if I am sitting next to the wireless access point, my signal meter never reads more than a 3 ^ symbols.

I just got a free Rave last month, service in my area sucked so bad they pretty much had no choice but to give me one, Maybe they stopped giving them out cause eventually everyone would have them. I'm in a non 4G city and my speeds are horrible, almost useless. Verizon's LTE looks mighty good right now...and the caps don't bother me cause I barely use 2 gigs a month. So a 5gig plan would be a good cushion...
But about the wifi, in my basement which is right below where I have my router I had one bar of wifi and it was SLOOOOOW. When I went right next to the router the speeds were top notch. Sometimes I like to sit outside and mess around on my phone, but I highly doubt the signal will even reach the phone through an Insulated wall if it has trouble going through a non insulated floor... My Epic 4G never had that Issue...

The change was just effective last week check out the sprintusers.com thread. They are cutting out all discounts prior to the iphone launch
Just out of curiosity....Could someone Use the speedtest.net and run a test on 3G no 4G and post back what their UPLOAD speed was. Mine is 75 kbps and that is way too slow...if others have this issue then I know it's messed up, but if it's mine, then I need to head to a sprint store...I started a thread about this, lots of people read it, but no one posted one comparison...a simple test and a simple reply....easy does it...thanks!
Is wifi supposed to say scanning the whole time?

Then it looks like I got one just in time then. Cause it helps so much, I can be anywhere in my house even in my basement and I have almost full bars. But ever since I got the E4GT I can't get the damn uploads to get past 100 kbps I seen other people don't have this problem...what gives? Is it possible to have a bug in mine that affects the upload speed?

Airave works great

Out of curiosity, who here has an airave? My mother got hers yesterday for free for being a loyal customer for 11 years and also because of her horrible coverage in her home. I actually called customer service to see if she was eligible and she was. She used to get 1 to 2 signal bars on her epic 4g touch and now she gets full bars. Her 3g speeds went up 1.5 mbps from .3mbps. She's pretty happy with her airave . I also find out that they are planning to build a sprint tower about 20 minutes away off the highway from where she lives. No reason to leave sprint anyone time soon . Hell if the Tmobile and AT&T merger happens and I hope it doesn't, I'm heading to Sprint.
I don't know about Sprints version but we've used an At&t microcell for over a year with little to no issues. Had to pay $150 for the damn thing but it's been great. They should work similarly.

Have had ours for some time now. Had a couple issues with it, but was always resolved within a timely manner. Without out ours here in the home, we'd see 1 bar if that. Got ours free from the problems that we've had signal wise.
Got an airave v2 from sprint for free since my basement drops calls, works great throughout the entire house, sometimes it doesn't switch properly to the sprint tower when I get out of range outside and drops though, but that's a rarity

I have a new version Airave in my home (got it for free from Sprint cuz of poor signal quality indoors), and it works very well.
That's great that some have it especially for free. One question, does anyone have the GPS blinking green. When I first set it up it stopped blinking green and noticed now that it's blinking. I don't have the airave near a window nor elevated because of how her computer is set up and located. Should I bother connecting the external GPS or just not worry about it. My mother won't use her GPS whatsoever. Thanks.
Gps has to get a signal before airave will recieve data. As well as in highest level of support every call was airave. They work for a while and stop. We had an airave dept, but the calls were in the 100's every hr. We had to take all the overflow airave calls. Hate those things!

I used mine without the extra gps ant. For a few months with mixed results. After a while I noticed the gps light flashed often, so I hooked up the external Gps reciever. Night and day diffrence. The airave never skips a beat, and signal is 100 fold better.

I've read that you that you can just plug it in and it should work. I have tried changing the IP, etc. So far nothing.

It needs to be close to a window or attach the GPS antenna to a window. Also first time plug in could take hours to go solid lights.

I want to have it after the router as well, and thats where mine is; however, in a situation like yours where your trying to fix a problem its time to troubleshoot. If you put it before the router and it works then you've identified where the problem lies...

I too have crappy signal at home. For those who have gotten unit from Sprint free do you still have to pay the monthly airwave fee? Seems to be unfair since you are using your own internet service provider to hook the airwave to.

Hey guys, I was just wondering if anyone knew of a way to make it so that service was better, I live in a part of town that gets service but when inside its around my house if I want to do anything off my phone I have to rely on my wireless router and Wi-Fi, if anyone knows how I can perhaps boost my signal or another quirky tricks please let me know
Edit: I forgot to mention that every three minutes I get an alert saying I'm roaming, this is very annoying.

Call Sprint, tell the exactly what problems you are having and "suggest" to them that if you can't get better signal, you may have to change carriers. Tell them you heard that there is a device called an airave, which, if you have a router, will connect to it, and give you 3G in your house. They should ship you one for free, if the person doesn't do that, call back, the next one will....

Call customer support and request for an AIRWAVE, it's a femtocell (mini cell tower). It will provide coverage at your home or wherever you have a internet connection through Cable or DSL. Will not work, according to Sprint, with a satellite connection ie., Hughes Net.
The devices are free of charge but their will be a one time activation fee. I wasn't told this when I received the equipment and called back to see if I could get it waived, they granted my request. It's quite simple to set up as well if you're tech savvy with hardware, same process as setting up a wireless router by plugging cables in and ac adapter.

Does wifi calling suck on all Android Phones??

I've used pixel phones for the past 4 years and both my Pixel 1XL and 3XL both do not kick over to Wifi calling until the signal was horrid (-120db +) on standby. I frequent lots of areas where the signal is sub par, but usable (-110 to -120db). The major issue with this logic is that you start a call on the network (in my case VZW) and shortly after the call connects to the person on the other end it kicks onto Wifi Calling. This is NOT a smooth transition. There is a 1-2 second 'blip' that causes the audio to cut out and I have to repeat myself... which is incredibility frustrating. I could turn off wifi calling, but then go into places like a basement and loose the call every time. The iPhone on the other hand if it has 1-3 bars and good wifi it switches to wifi and stays parked on wifi until you leave the wifi coverage area or the wireless coverage improves. What determines the signal level that the phones switch to wifi calling? Is it Android or the carrier? Does this differ my phone manufacturer? I'm looking to switch from Verizon to ATT, and ATT doesn't offer an updated LTE Microcell which means I would rely on wifi calling in my basement. I don't want to have the same wifi calling experience I have seen on VZW with a Pixel. Does Oneplus, LG, or Samsung do this better? Is there a root hack I could use to fix the problem?
I've only used it a couple of times as T-Mo isn't good where I'm at. I mean exactly where I'm at. I'm like in a dead zone in my apartment/complex. I get 1-2 bars max, but I can go about 20 yards, and get full bars. Wi-Fi was hit and miss as much as a bad cell signal for me. I tried to use it as "always on", but it didn't matter. I gave up, and ended up getting one of T-Mo's personal CellSpots, so now I get full bars in my place, and never have to use Wi-Fi calling. But to answer your question for me, yes, it sucks to use Wi-Fi calling.
WiFi calling is highly sensitive to your internet connection quality and jitter and also your router. I have had multiple configurations since WiFi calling has come into play. Your wireless router plays the biggest part from what I've noticed and their is so many different ones out there now. Best thing to do first is if you have a computer with a lan cable. Plug it directly into your modem and do a jitter test like this one https://www.fusionconnect.com/speed-test-plus/
Then make a note of what your results are. Now plug everything else back and set it up like your normally would have it and then do the same test over wireless through your router and compare the results to the first test. If they are quite a bit worst than the first results then your router is screwing it up. Most likely it's a premium feature (gimmick) that the router has that is screwing up stuff. I've only had TMobile with WiFi calling but my brother was on Verizon WiFi calling for a bit before switching over to TMobile and once I had a good configuration dialed in with a good internet connection and a good router set up he had no problems except for if he walked out of WiFi range sometimes. We don't have the best LTE signal at the house so the switchover wouldn't always be the smoothest.
Best combo I've tried so far is an Ubiquiti Edgerouter X and then using an Ubiquiti Unifi WiFi access point to give out WiFi. The Edgerouter X has a better type of QoS than most home routers nowadays and it can help WiFi calling issues a lot.
Now I have never experienced this issue you describe with it cutting out upon connection but it does sound like a typical switchover issue where it is switching from wifi calling to LTE or vice versa. Unfortunately that depends on the carrier and how they implement it on their network but I would definitely advise experimenting with your home internet set up if you ever have enough time as that could definitely be a factor as well
I have yet to see WI-FI calling work reliably - ( Engineer w/ 20+ yrs) Another technology pushed to production way too early.
