ICS Problems - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

This has been pretty much been the most frustrating update process of my 4 Android devices that I have owned.
Hoping some of the sharp people here can help me out.
Buttons Not Working - About every third or fourth time I wake my phone my physical buttons do not work. I have to put the phone to sleep and re-wake (sometimes multiple times) to get my phone's buttons to work.
Excessive Battery Drain - Yikes!!! I have uninstalled all my apps, and it is still occurring. Any other ideas to figure out what might be causing this?
Constant 3G data movement - When wi-fi is off, my phone is constantly pushing 3g data up and down....non-stop!
Excessive Phone Heat - My phone is running like a furnace.
Now, I think the last three are probably connected in some way.

That is not ICS you have something running in the background. That would cause all of that. Get a battery monitor app and see what is running

I am glad I am not the only ones with these problems.
It has to be a ICS function that is causing the excessive battery drain.
I currently have no non stock apps installed.
I have noticed that the battery ran from 100% to 25% but battery drain had no slowed considerably....maybe faulty logic in how they are calculating percentages?
The one I would really like to solve is the buttons not working, as there will be lots of battery related threads as more and more people upgrade.

The malfunctioning buttons have been happening to some of us on every ROM, whether it's Gingerbread or ICS. It happens to mine on stock GB or stock I'VE.
Just so you know, you can tap the volume Roche to wake up the buttons. You don't have to cycle the screen. Tap the volume button, wait second or so and you will see the capacitive buttons blink once... That means they've reset. Sometimes you have to do it twice.

Same issue here with the retarded battery life, stock rooted FF18. It's pathetic. Constant battery drain while "sleeping", with wifi on or off. Guess i'll have to try a different ROM.

I tried this yesterday when I was getting terrible battery life. I went from fully charged to dead in 3 hours flat.
I ended up doing a factory reset with sfhub's one-click and am slowly testing and restoring apps to see what's acting as a vampire.

You should try it again if it didn't work!

Not everyone's issue is going to be caused by the same thing. What may work for you may not always work for everyone else. It may be an app or ICS in general causing the issue.

Maps draining battery

All of a sudden I've been getting less battery life. When looking at the programs that are using the battery most, Maps has been near the top of the list. The thing is, it does this even when not using the maps app at all. I've tried force closing, but still pulls CPU and drains the battery.

What's your screen on time.
Looked kinda like liteflow might be causing problems?
Cell Standby i think is the one that is coded wrong and is lying, ignore that one.
If you press Android System in settings, battery it will show you the top components being used
Also in dev options look for and check Show CPU Usage. It will show whats using the cpu in the top right of your screen. Watch for what stays in the top few spots in the list.
There may have been something that didnt like the update. Try first uninstalling apps and if that helps reinstall them clean, no data restore. If you continue to have problems backup all data and factory reset. Start clean.
If all else fails use odin to flash the full LH2 fw.
LH2 should be a fairly stable build. Most have no issues and many get outstanding battery life. Im willing to bet its either an app or the way you updated or both.

That's really not THAT bad for a screen on time. I saw your screenshots in the OP, and you were down to 80% in only two hours of being on the battery, but you had the screen on for almost an hour of those two hours; 20%/hr for the first few hours is pretty normal. It's not stellar, but I wouldn't say it's an epic drain that being said, I'm sure you could squeeze some more juice out of it, and prob is just an app causing more drain than usual.
Also when doing a screenshot, it helps to hit the power button first, then the volume, so you don't get the volume pop up every time.

[Q] battery drain problem JB back to stock.

i updated to jellybean LI8 from stock t999 LH2 version, but because of super heavy battery drain i flashed it back to LH2 thru odin.
However i still get same heavy battery drain. i use up 10% every 1 hr just with screen on. before i used up about 3~5% for 1 hr.
i was able to get about 14~16hrs with normal use before, but now i dont think i can even get 10hrs.
it seems that the sim card area gets hot whenever the screen is on, and cools down when off. before flashing my phone was never heated
unless i was playing heavy graphic games..is there a way to completely flash the system files? or to fix this problem...pls help. thanks

yes the screen % is fine so i dont know where its draining the battery...
i think something wrong with system file because my phone really didnt get warm just from having the screen on.
is the method i reverted to ics correct? or is there another way to completly reset/overwrite my phone back to stock?
If your phone is working, your method wasn't incorrect. If you flashed the stock firmware through Odin, that's as virgin as it gets.
Battery Info and KakaoTalk are obvious culprits. Tell me about your wifi situation. Are you connected to a wifi network?
yeah usually i leave wifi and kakao talk on most of the day but it doesnt drain battery this fast...it just messed it up after the jellybean update., it was 100% this morning, 4 hours and now i got 60%. usually i would probably still have around 85%+
I'm in xquizit v26 and observed that I'm not getting a deep sleep and the battery drain in less than 5 hours. I reflash the rom with full wipe and still have the same issue. I step back and investigate what cause this problem. It seems that when I flashed the kitchen v6 with open vpn cause not to have a deep sleep. With out the open vpn I was able to get a deep sleep. On the first cycle I was able to get the 15hrs battery life. I will continue to observe this because the battery behavior can only be observed after 3 days.
I tried to post this in the ROM section but XDA wont allow it because I only have less than 10 post.

and i think its not the app but the thing with screen. whenever the screen turns on, it gets hot and the batt uses alot..
i tried re-flashing using odin while ago but still the same.
I would suggest flashing wildchlds XquiziT or DJintrigues Frosty JB. They both have done very good jobs at getting more out of your battery while still remaining stable. Being on the full stock leak i doubt you will easily find a way to acceptable battery life. At full stock i kind of remember LI8 being one of the worst for battery.
There are actually multiple causes, some depend on how you use the phone.
Another thing you can do to help hunt it down is get Better Battery Stats.
Also in Settings > Dev Options check show cpu usage and itll tell you what processes are using the processor in real time. You will likely see 2 or more that seem to stay at the top of the list.

Yes you can flash rom without kitchen. Hes actually working on a new release hoping for today I believe.
Kitchen was taken down due to possible bricks when using wallet and mobile odin.
Also, battery problems are not 100% solved in either rom but are close!

JB has been known to use more battery than ICS(At least with the port releases) I've seen upwards of 65%
If you're rooted use betterbatterystats and see exactly what is draining it. A known source of major drain (for me 10% an hour) was an unknown service in /system/bin called gsiff_daemon. It has something to do with gps, but that's besides the point. On every rom I flash, I go in and rename it to gsiff_daemon.bak this will make it so it won't run. I have done this the entire time I've had a gs3 and never once have run into an issue from disabling this service, but I have saved my battery by doing it

Rooting and unlocking is huge if you want battery improvements. Removing apps such as google+ will help with battery drain and the ROMs we have out now also have scripts and other battery enhancements.

Also, with that pic, I don't have the bars under it showing screen on, awake times, WiFi on, charging or signal. How can I get these back? They are very useful pieces of info.

Sorry didn't mean to take over a thread. This seemed like a logical thread to post with.

Noticed the same thing. Kind of weird. Wonder if it's adjusting to try to give a more accurate prediction of battery level?
Can I just uninstall Google+ once I'm rooted?

Once you're rooted AND unlocked. You can't uninstall system apps until unlocked or you'll get a security error.

I have seen those peaks. The other day I restarted and the percentage in my notification bar changed by 3% immediately after the reboot. That said, I easily got 12 hours over the weekend on a single charge with decent usage.

Still looking in to a workaround. No promises.
Battery life for me seems fine. Only thing for me is that after the update I've been getting bad service. Can't download anything from play store unless on WiFi. Says I have 3g but downloads are stuck at 0%
