Otterbox Commuter Case and Case Mate - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

I've been looking for a case that offers adequate protection while maintaining a relatively slim profile. My search has led me to the Otterbox Commuter Case but I would like to know how much protection it offers compared to the Case Mate with kickstand

The otterbox case is freaking great, I don't know how many times I dropped my phone and it's all good not a single scratch or dent. But it can't withstand throws like what my friend did to his when his girl pissed him off. Screen shattered.

Ya, Im talking about the commuter. The defender is too bulky as hell and ugly, but the protection from that is crazy, thats not really needed.
Edit: Case mate is also a good case, but I had that for my galaxy s fascinate and after a year the outer shell case started cracking i know its from me constantly taking it out of the case to pull out the battery. But still, the quality of the plastic is too crispy, it was cracking on both sides, like I left it out on the sun.

case mate
case mate tough case is good. i have a otterbox defender it was WAY TO BULKY. i switched back to my case mate and installed a zagg protector. i missed the thin profile

Yes I agree, trident aegis was my favorite until I got the tough. My phone feels protected but still fits in my pocket easily.

My Otterbox Commuter came in two days ago. I still haven't opened it yet because I'm trying to decide if I should send it back and get an extended battery instead. Anybody experience something like this? If so what did you choose?

I personally use the Otterbox Defender, being a contractor I absolutely need the "excessive" protection for my phone. Its taken a few falls off a 10 foot A frame ladder and been completely fine. If you want a step down, check out the Sedio cases as well. The case they have that offers protection similar to the Otterbox Commuter is great for the price. If you combine that with a good screen protector you're almost at the same level as the Defender.

Thats the Sedio case I'm referring to, the holster is junk but the case really isn't bad for mid level protection. Check out the others mention in this thread thus far as well, they are all good options.

Yeah the Commuter is a great choice, just figured I'd share my experience with Otterbox alternatives since Otterbox didn't make anything for this phone for a while. Extended batteries are overrated in my opinion, if one can't access a charger to give the phone a boost (if not a full charge) than I'd say those mobile power packs are a better investment. Unless you can find a good extended battery that still allows for a solid case, and if you find that let us know cause I'd like to look into that. That's just my take, I'd rather my phone lose a charge faster and still be in one piece haha. Cheers, let us know what you end up doing cause I'm pretty curious.

Haha my thoughts exactly! I think I'll just get an extra OEM battery or two. How hard is it to take the Commuter off? Also, will it begin to lose its form from taking it off?

Not sure to be honest because I've only had the Defender for this phone. If it's still the hard plastic inside with the rubber encasing it, it's bound to lose its shape eventually. My Defender's rubber outside is starting to slip off the bottom right corner a little bit, but I don't use the holster so I'm sure putting it in my pocket doesn't help. That and the case really does get a beating! But my phone looks like it's right out of the Samsung box every time it's out of the case so I can't complain.

I like the commuter case better too. And it fits in to the Siedo surface holster well.
how is the defender thicker than the commuter case?by how many mm? mind telling?
thanks
The defender case is not a good case. At least that has been my experience. Loved it on my Evo 3D as it kept it very safe and secure, on the Galaxy Nexus it has caused damage.

Sorry to kind of hijack this thread but after using the defender for over six weeks, this is my conclusion.

I picked up a Defender because I didn't want to leave this phone totally unprotected. The case fits snugly and looks like it will give solid protection..however ( there's always a but I don't care for the screen protector, it makes text a bit blurry, the Defender also makes the phone rather bulky.
I'll use this case during the work week but will be looking for something slimmer & more elegant for weekends & special events.

I just bought a defender, and am loving it, just a! Question. On the otter box site, some have said it fits with the Samsung extended battery. Can anyone confirm this? It does seem to have a little play with the OEM battery so I'm hoping it will.

That sucks that the member above had such a bad experience with this case. I have to think that somehow that particular case was defective. My Nexus doesn't move around one bit, even with the standard size battery. No movement at all. I also show no signs of wear whatsoever around the earpiece and ff camera. I've used this case almost exclusively since December 23rd.

I used the Defender series with my Galaxy Nexus with extended battery and it fits. Although, I too thought about removing the screen protector. It seems to take away from the screen vibrancy. I never liked or used screen protectors and dont like it on my case.

Trident Kraken A.M.S. or Otterbox Defender

I like the look of otterbox better, but tridant has the kick stand...so depends on what you think you'd use more. I had an otterbox on my phone for a while but realized the bulk was too much since I baby my phone. I'm sure same would be for the trident. If you drop ur phone a lot or do a lot of hiking with it, bulk it up....but otherwise it really takes away from the slim design.

I haven't seen an AMS until now, ordered mine. 34.95 on amazon.
I have the otterbox defender case. The back of my holster clip locks in so it can be a kickstand. Its very bulky but it works.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
I have the trident aegis. With trident cases, the plastic is on top of the silicone when you put it on, with silicone sticking out on the corners. That way, the silicone doesn't easily stretch like it does on the otterbox. Especially if you take off your case on a regular basis. I have the defender for my ipod touch, and I've used it on other devices as well. In my opinion, the screen protector is horrible as well. The worst I've ever used(yes its worse than those cheap ones you can get off ebay in a 3 pack for 3 dollars). Trident cases also have dust covers over the mic and speaker grill, whereas the otterbox does not. So I say go with the Kraken. It would be worth it.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda app-developers app
Thanks. I decided to but the Otter from BestBuy, and also order the Kraken online to try both out when the Kraken gets here. The first day with the Otter was terrible with the screen protector, but now it's a lot better, since I guess it either stuck to my screen better, or O got used to it. Does anyone know the quality of the built in protector for he Kraken? And also, one last thing, if I were to drop the Kraken, since the outside is; plastic, how durable is that plastic. Because the thing I like the most is he outside rubber for the Otter.

Just got my Kraken today, absolutely love it. As for the screen protector, I threw it away, didn't even bother with it. I've had ghost Armor on all of my phones as well as my wife's phone, I get a new one put on once a month and have never had a problem. The plastic around the Kraken is very durable and wouldn't be worried if I drop the phone. I'm coming from an Aegis, a lot better protection and I've owned otterboxes before, Kraken from here on out for me.

i just got this case a few days ago and i like it so far. im coming from an otterbox, which i started to not like that much after the rubber outer layer began to get weak. im sure i could probably contact otterbox about it and they would likely send another one. but i wanted to give the kraken a shot since i really like the aegis and my only contention with it was that there was no kickstand or belt clip. i have to get used to the texture, hard and a lil slippery is much different from the otterbox's soft grippy exterior...but not a downer by any means. also, i found the screen protector to be decent and actually a welcome edition. i was ready to go without it or use a Realook screen saver that i have, but the one that comes with the Kraken is nice and im not having an issue with it at all.
one issue i do have with the Kraken is that they didn't design it with a hole for the indicator light (top right). i actually use mine and when im doing in the field and my phone is on silent. so that would be a good thing to adjust if they can for future designs.
Be different, go trident... I see too many otterboxs.. Mostly on iphones though

Define "Best" there are MANY different "BEST" cases out there... check out my review of Otterbox Defender in Atomic color. I love it, but some might hate it.
I get a lot of compliments from people about the funky color...
Honestly, if you're looking for a case that can offer a great protection from almost everything but water... look no further. Otterbox has been manufacturing quality and very well designed cases for many years. Also, if you get it from amazon, you save about $20. just my two cents!
Like someone else said, "best" is cometely objective. My best may not be your best.... However, I prefer the Ballistic SG Maxx. If you search the accessories forum you'll find a mini review i did with some pics.

It's bold yes, but I don't think screen protectors are necessary. Cases yes. But a screen protector won't stop your screen from cracking or shattering if dropped, it'll help stop scratches. But gorilla glass is design to resist most scratches already.
My over 2 year old epic's screen still looks brand new. Even after drops and kicks...Just my personal opinion.
Kinda glad the trident kraken doesn't come with a built in one.

Why no mention of Seidio cases? I have been using their cases for my last few phones and they are great. My GS3 case has a magnetic metal kickstand and looks nice. It also feels well protected. I don't use a screen protector though as I also prefer naked. Personally, I think screen protectors offer a false sense of security on modern gorilla glass screens.

I've had both (Although I had the Commuter for my old LG Optimus One) and I currently have the Seidio Active (Without the kickstand) and the Seidio Active is much much better. The silicone and plastic is much higher quality and it doesn't lose it's shape like most Otterboxes too. The only upside with buying the Otterbox is that is comes with a screen protector (A pretty crappy one anyway) and that's about it. The Seidio case is much better.

By the way does the case get a lot of lint on it and does it get stuck inside pockets and such that's my main concern lol

The Seidio case picks up a little bit of lint, a LOT less than the Otterboxes do. Half the time for me it doesn't pick lint up but when it does it's barely noticeable and wipes off really easily. Can't same the same about the Otterbox though, I had a hell of a time with lint problems when I had one for my old phone.

Do yourself a favor and also check out the Trident Kraken(Excellent Video Review Here). It has an awesome kickstand, tons of accessories that can be bought(11 bucks for a windshield mount? DONE!) and you can take it out of the poly-carb box and use just the silicon sleeve when you don't need it. Plus from everything I read online, Trident offers far superior protection than SEIDO or Otterbox. And the rotatable belt clip is way better than a holster, to me anyway. Give it a look, love mine!
Also if you want slightly less protection(and thickness) consider the Trident Aegis.
Quit hatin' on the Commuter!

Of course the Trident Kraken offers superior protection when compared to the Seidio Active and Otterbox Commuter but it also adds a lot more bulk to your phone. (If you're ok with that, then go for the Kraken! It is the most protective case out of the three!).
And I wasn't hating on the Commuter, I was just stating what I had encountered when I had one with my old phone.

I ordered it but not from Amazon, I got it at the cell guru website for $17.94 including shipping. It's a great case!

Looks ugly, but that's my opinion.

Your entitled to it, I already own a otterbox defender but I wanted something a little slimmer for looks. I was debating between this case and the UAG but I found this one better looking, I didn't like the design of the UAG.

I have the same setup as the pictures posted. I love this case and all its great protection, and it really feels great in hand. However the rubber bumpers on each corner do require a sleight of hand maneuvering the phone out of pockets.

Can anyone recommend a screen protector that can be used with this case that covers the entire screen?

Actually that's the case I'm using (UAG) lol. I find it looks awesome and provides good protection. But yeah, I guess we are two different pees in the same pod

This case actually comes with a decent screen protector. Invisible shield equivalent or better imo.

Edit: I bought mine about 2 weeks ago from CellGuru for $21 shipped in 3 business days.
I have been waiting for the White to go back in stock at Amazon. I didnt want to buy from a 3rd party.
I went ahead and ordered the Black today and I will decide if I am going to cancel the White order when I get the Black one tomorrow.
I hate waiting just to find out I don't like something.:cyclops:
I had an Amazon return last week. It took 4 days from the time I gave the UPS guy my return until the money was back in my account. can't beat that if you have Prime.

I need a screen protector that covers the entire front of the phone, so that nothing is exposed. I work machining metal and would easily mess up any uncovered area. I'm still using my Otterbox defender for work, I want to use this case at all times but not until I find a screen protector that covers the entire front of the screen.

Finally bit the bullet and picked up this case. Do you guys think the front lip offers protection comparable to a defender?

The front lip is slightly smaller than the defender, but still offers very good protection.

This. Aside from the average screen protector provided, this case is sexier, thinner, and more ergonomic in my hands than any of the otterboxs. The smooth matte finish is fantastic with great grips on the side to make sure you have a nice grasp of your phone.
I think eventually, since this screen protector does not curve at the edges, nor does it completely cover the screen, I will purchase a higher grade protector for that final bit of comfort. This is a fantastic case that guards the phone at every angle.
My heart still wants a UAG though..
