What's the point of 2GB ram if you can't use it? - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

So my first complaint with this phone is I'll be using it normally browsing the web, fb, or xda and all of a sudden the screen will get VERY laggy to scroll through! And low and behold when I check my ram usage I'll be using between 1-1.1gb with about half a gig supposedly left over! But as soon as I clear the ram...all is well again and no more lag! What gives?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda premium

Did you ever think that it might not be a ram issue if theres free ram left over? Seems like thats not the issue there
Controlling you through a chip in your butt since 1999

I've actually noticed this too. There will be like 600mb of free RAM but the homescreen and general UI tasks would still be laggy. I believe this is due to all the running processes bogging down the CPU. Once you clear the apps, maybe some app processes stop, leaving you with more free CPU that you can use for the UI?

This happens to the xda app almost exclusively on my phone. I use fast restart to clear everything out and then it works fine. Dunno what's causing it, doubt it's ram though as I have tons free.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using Tapatalk 2

You probably have a rogue app messing with the cpu. Possibly try an app like watchdog. I don't believe you need root for it.
Sent from my SPH-L710 using Tapatalk 2

Through deduction I'm telling you its a ram issue. Because if it were a rouge app or something of the sort, the problem would surface as soon as I load xda and start browsing. Instead...the problem shows up after I have scrolled through several forums and threads...never leaving the app
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda premium

No one else is having a ram induced lag issue like you're describing. Either you're wrong about the correlation (most likely) or there's something wrong with your phone. It's not a S3 problem.

Tell you what.....if anyone can post a video with your device using even 90% of the ram on stock touchwiz...I'll shoot you 10 bucks!
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda premium

So what you're saying is you're running multiple apps, which bogs down your SoC, so your device starts scrolling slowly on the app you're using. Then you're closing apps, which reduces load on the SoC and makes things smoother. Makes sense to me. SoC can't take too big a load without seeing a visible drop in performance, seeing as we have a last gen GPU working with a next gen size and resolution display.

Its just the fact that the XDA app uses 30% of your CPU while in the background doing nothing.. more while in use.. I force close it when I am not useing it.

what deduction method did you use? you're willing to accept that it's a RAM problem when 50% of RAM isn't even being used, but aren't willing to accept that it could be a CPU problem if CPU is working at more than 50% capacity? that doesn't make sense.

Why would the app (xda, fb, whatever) start bogging during use and not initially upon using the app?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda premium

Blah the xda app is horrible. There is no reason it needs to be using CPU cycles in the background and I do experience the slowdown and eventual crash after a long while of use.
The older version of the free app didn't have these issues, but forget it I think ill just use chrome or tapatalk.

I have this problem with xda, although I HIGHLY doubt it's a ram issue. If anything, it has something to do with a unknown problem with the implementation of the HW on our phones, or Sammy tweaked something that's not playing nice with the xda app. Even if the xda app was only being granted access to 1gb of ram on our phones, the app wouldn't be crashing the way it is.

I can't even read my private messages or it freezes. So lame. It's shows down only after last update. Highly doubt the phone did it but maybe.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app

Might have something to do with the disappearing scrolling bar, don't worry a Cupertino company patented that today, so a "fix" should be on the way shortly.
In all seriousness, has anyone else experienced this outside of the xda app besides the OP?

I use this app to show cpu, ram, proc load etc. Sgs3 fast reboot to close out processes. Works the best. I also use tapatalk 2. I do not have any problems as OP

Q: Battery not lasting longer than a few hours when in use.

Ok so I'm running cm7-180 nightlies coupled with tiamat 4.0.7+ no SBC and I've recalibrated my battery to the kernel. When on airplane mode the battery will last hours or even days on end but if I turn off airplane mode the battery drains exceptionally fast. I'm underclocked with min at 128 and max at 768 using the smartass cpu governor. My brightness is at the lowest setting and my 3g isn't enabled. Location features are disabled as well along with background data. Still the battery drains when in even moderate use. There aren't any apps running in the background either. Any ideas why this may be happening?

You might want to check for wake lock I use battery monitor widget for that.
I'm on the same ROM and get great battery using tiamat 3.3.7 or sz 2.2.1 with vipermod under volted -75 .
For wake lag on screen on check off screen on and off animations and set your min cpu to 245 or what ever the second from lowest is and see if that helps.
Edit:I also use sbc kernels I always have since I got my phone a year ago with no problems.

Did you check for wake lock ?
Make sure your phone sleeps when the screen is off.
I also use viperboys vipermod script to under volt the kernel more then it is.
I'll give you a link to older tiamat kernels try out 3.3.7 that one gives me the best battery the newer ones kill my battery.

[Q] Poor memory usage: an ICS or Galaxy Nexus issue?

I've posted in the past about how crazy multitasking is on the GN, as I've been constantly frustrated with the aggressive nature in which Android kills background apps.
Now that I have ICS on three different devices, and I'm able to compare their RAM usage and I'm shocked by what I see.
On both my HP Touchpad and Asus Transformer, my FREE ram is almost always between 300mb and 400mb (with services running) before I start running apps, but my Galaxy Nexus is usually between 100mb and 150mb free ram.
I've heard the saying that "free ram is wasted ram", but I seriously question this as apps very rarely get killed on the two tablets, but they are constantly getting killed (including services) on the GN.
I should point out that I'm running minimal apps on my GN, so I don't have services from twitter, dropbox, Facebook, etc. running on the phone, but I have a lot of stuff running on the two tablets.
Fyi: rebooting the GN causes me to reclaim about 200mb to 300mb of ram, but it quickly "fills" as I start to use apps, even if I kill those those apps...
So what's going on with the memory management on this phone?
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using Tapatalk
All I can suggest is go to menu > apps and see what is running after a fresh reboot. My nexus has been on for 15 hours and I have 334mb of free RAM. You Might have a couple of apps auto starting which you can stop with an auto start manager from the market
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA App
I have 324mb free. Also, stop comparing tablets to phones. Phones will always use more ram due to it needing to run more telephony services. Let us also not forget that the transformer is not omap 4, and omap 4 reserves ~300mb between OS, codecs, and GPU.
Can you guys post a screenshot of your settings > apps > running screen? I can't believe that I'm the only one with this issue!
As for phones vs. Tablets, I can agree that the phone has additional services running for the phone parts, but considering I'm running so many background apps/services on the tablet, I would expect them to be using way more than the GN, but the opposite is true... I can't remove any more from my phone or it will have no use to me. I don't even run Skype anymore because of the memory issues I've been experiencing.

absurd, both my phones are on stock and the phones never slow down.
I dont use a task killer and I never reboot the phones.
Just disable the annoying bloatwares and you should be fine. (I disabled 20 of them).
Well my thing is that with all the hype about this phone being fast and what not and having 2GB of ram, I shouldn't be having this issue. The phone shouldn't slow down to a crawl where it does nothing at all and I have to do a battery pull or if able, clear the ram.
I understand, I can flash CM10, which I'm running right now by the way and/or freeze the bloatware. But in order to use both these methods, you have to be rooted. What about the person that isn't rooted?
Because I sale/trade phones alot, I've the oppourtunity to own 3-4 other S3's and I experienced the same issues with them.
How about do not keep activities ?

you realize in that screenshot, he has 490MB free ram. Ram is not the issue for a slowdown. it doesnt get slower as it gets fuller. it gets slow when its FILLED.he would have to launch a game of Grand Theift Auto III completely into memory before memory would cause the system to slow down.
a possible cause would be kernel, or its settings. Stock kernel? ya sounds right.
Unused ram is wasted ram, or so I've always heard. It clears it as needed so I doubt that's the issue. My phone was pretty sluggish stock as well and I had a gb of free ram on the norm.

The thing with the limit to 4 processes is that once you reboot the phone it usually resets to the default(what I found). The slugishness is due to something bogging the CPU i think more so than the memory. I think there was a thread about the CPU either being stuck in low speed(sluggish) or other times it can be stuck in full performance(battery drain). There is a fix for it, maybe that would help you?

Its definitely not your ram. You have plenty left. Its almost certainly a rogue app(s) that is using a ton of CPU in the background. This also explains why the allow only 4 background apps settings change worked temporarily for you. I've known a couple people with same issue even myself once, very briefly and used one of many apps/task manager and could easily find that an app was using 40-90% CPU on and off in background without even knowing it. Killed the app and eventually uninstalled it and been fine ever since.

Well the more tweaks and overclocking and the more and more crap I have running on my phone lol is why I was way over 4000. It says what's your secret... I wouldn't even know where to begin. Start with Perseus kernel though. But seriously would even getting 6 or 7000 Really be a good thing anyway? I mean running every tweak and tweak app and overclock isn't really healthy for your device overall imo. Don't get me wrong I love how fast this thing is but lots of times you end up screwing something up and have to start from scratch.

Just what we needed, another "benchmark" to make us feel inadequate about our phones.
PS, I hate futuremark. They are BS for a benchmark, but great for stress-testing/burn-in a new video card.

I know the numbers mean nothing but it's always fun.
Not that it means much, but for fun, here are my numbers:
Regular: 3415
Extreme: 2545
Whomp's latest and No-frills CPU set at performance.
I'd rather have the 15+ hours of battery life than fighting space ships moving a bit faster.
Never understood the benchmark apps. They mean very little in today's devices.

I don't understand why so many people base a device off a benchmark. Real World is totally different

I disagree that benchmarks mean nothing. They measure speed and performance which is what I want out of my device. To each his own but they mean everything to me. Some worry more about battery life which is fine but obviously not performance because it would adversely affect your battery.

What a benchmark does is measure how well your particular device does in that particular benchmark... It tells you nothing about real world life of opening or closing apps or about interface lag. Battery life is something real, a bench like this tells you nothing apart from how well your device does on it.
Benches are fundamentally about epeen.

I guess what I'm saying is I don't care about battery life because I bought 3 extra batteries and a wall charger so it's not an issue for me and performance is what I want. Yeah maybe benches don't say much but I'm into speed so I like to just have something to compare it too.

We have the biggest phone, why not want the biggest e-peen?

Yes but why is stock nexus 4 so much faster than stock note 2?

What's your average remaining memory at the end of the day?

As the title say, I usually get just about 500-700 MB left at the end of the day. That's without killing apps the whole day. Is that just fine?
Also why do RAM starts at 1750? I thought we have a 2Gb Ram? I'm on x14 Rom if that even mean anything. TIA.

I think this way- unused RAM is wasted RAM I usually have 700-200 mb left. The 1.7gb is probably because some of it is allocated elsewhere? Not really sure..

I don't look at it as wasted because it doesn't go anywhere if you don't use it. I just thought the phone starts to go laggy when you have almost used up most of it.
Can android OS sort of free some RAM by closing some apps that's been inactive for a long time automatically?
Maybe that function is there and I just don't know where to find it. A help will surely be appreciated.

I think that if you feel like you've used your phone "regularly" and you still have 500-700mb at the end of the day, that's great!
Android does have some memory management, and unused ram is "wasted ram", but on earlier devices, the android system and a few apps would use a majority of the memory, and so to be able to use your memory with the apps you were using right then, you had to use some pretty aggressive memory management.
500mb is still a nice chunk of ram to have left over, in my opinion.
None my phone does not last till the night. Battery is very good for a phone this big but I am a very heavy user as well

android memory management All you need to know
I did a quick search and this was first one that came up.. Leave android alone to manage itself . Killing apps and background processes in Android just causes the phone to work harder.
The above does not apply to bad or rogue apps that you have NOT USED or started.
read this post and you will understand why the above is VERY important on android .

There are thousands of other post about memory management.. Just use the search ...

lol! I guess that's what's eating my mem up hehe.
Anyway, the phone is fine, just wanna know if the mem usage is normal.
Also why does my SS says 1750mb? I thought note 2's mem is 2gb?

I see. So if I have this phone factory resetted/wiped without any user apps, I should have/see 1750gb remaining ideally?

No.. android will pre load apps into ram.. It swaps them out for those used most by the user as time goes on. It will keep Most all the apps sitting in ram waiting . The cpu and system is designed to do this. Holding something in ram.Is less taxing on the batter and cpu cycles then it is releasing it and freeing ram..
in android / Linux FREE RAM IS WASTED RAM.. this is the part you are not understanding.. Android will use minimum of half the available ram at all times. If you kill process or remove one app . it will bring the next most used app up. KILLING apps or process from ram just makes your phone work harder and use more battery... Read Article. One more thing. Say you have 10 apps sitting in ram using 80% of your ram.. Then launch one games that needs 50%. android will shut down apps sitting in ram for the least used and provide to the Game..So killing off apps only cause the os to have to think about ram kill and launch apps. Not to mention it does not keep a accurate account of apps you do actually use the most. Working the cpu harder . there for using more battery ..

No, because there are apps that run off the get go. Such things like the keyboard, launcher, etc. Those don't usually fall under system RAM.. so you'll never really have 1750 Mb free. The 1750 includes more than just user apps.
