battery isue with JB - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

strange thing is going on. my battery dropped form 50 to 17 %, than from 30 to 9% ect. before that i took out battery because i wanted to see something.
after that. battery life is getting worse. usually i could get about 4-4.5 hours of screen time. but now only 2-3 hours.
what is going on with my battery

Check your apps and install BetterBatterStats. It could be rogue apps not letting the phone go to sleep or making it work more than it should.

I am having similar issues (Jellybean Vicious Jellybean4.1.1 AOSP, faux kernal). I can literally see the battery percentage go down a percent every 30 seconds or so when i am using my phone / surfing web / streaming music.
Cant post in the main forum now - any suggestions would be appreciated.

It is often the kernal with the new JB roms. In an older build of Franco's kernal if you opened the camera when you first started the phone it would fix battery drain. I suggest a new kernal! (Franco's runs great on mine! ). If this doesn't work you might want to recalibrate your battery. This app works great, search "batterycalibration" on the play store. It will delete your battery data so your phone will charge to an actual 100%. Hope this helps!

There is so much wrong about this post its not even funny.
All kernels are pretty much equal. It all depends on how you tune it. You cannot calibrate your battery... all that does is delete battery stats. Which again DOES NOTHING.

My N7 running JB gets great battery life, but the GNex on JB is crap when it comes to battery. I'm often out of battery by 3-4pm in the afternoon.

The GNex has a 1850 mAh battery while the N7 has a 4326 giant mAh battery. That's more than twice the juice. What did you expect?

I've experienced crap battery since moving moving to JB as well. Same kernel and I can only manage 3.5 hours of display over like 8 hours. On Wi-Fi. Whereas on ICS same kernel as JB I was getting 5 hours. Its not just this guy.

I picked up a spare battery over the weekend (identical 1750mAh Samsung batteries), and today I ran the first one from 100% down to below 30%, and swapped. When I arrived home, I popped in the first one to charge it, only to find it is at 58%. I guess the principle is to not pay too much attention to the exact number, and to keep all my batteries as highly charged as possible...
I don't seem to have any rogue apps. The phone appears to sleep very well when I'm not actively using it.

If your battery randomly drops when you reboot your phone do this :
Let it die completely until it turns off, keep it turned off and then charge it completely (usually overnight ) and then turn it back on and it'll show you a very accurate battery percentage

Anybody body have extended battery?
Go nitro HD yesterday and battery life is just horrible.
100% 7am
played for 10 min
90% 730am
Left in locker for 2 hrs
60% 930am
Was in my pocket for hr during lunch time
50% 12am
Left in locker while working
30% 2pm
After work
20% 4pm
One 10min phone call
15%
I think i wont even last 1 hour with heavy usage of gaming and web surfing.
Still cant believe its draining battery life so quick.
300mb memory free and less than 10% cpu usage whole time.
official ATT ICS rooted. Nothing is running on background.
Anybody have extended battery? any review?
Looks like phone uses more power when hooked up to 500ma charger. My battery is draining with charging indcator. What's good battery app to checj my battery?
Sounds like something is wrong honestly. Did you do a factory reset after updating to ICS? Or did it come with ICS?
Something is definitely wrong if you're losing 30% charge sitting idle for two hours. When I had official ICS my phone wouldn't ever go to sleep and my my battery usage was terrible. No problems with Gingerbread, CM9, or CM10.
I have the extened battery the hyperion one and its lasts me like 48 hours i cant say enough of good stuff about it .

Hyperion battery, CM10, and Juice Defender make the phone worth having. I still carry a charger with me most everywhere I go, but at least I'm not frantically searching for a wall socket every 2 hours. The only down-side is that there are no cases for an extended battery; and as I found out, Zagg screen protectors most assuredly do not protect against drops.

Installed cm10 and played with it for while.
Battery is still messed up. I've been installing apps and surfing while plugged in and it charged only 3% in one hour.(1.2a ac adapter)
Does hyperion battery make phone too bulky?
On CM10, my phone drains about 1% an hour when just idling. I have Gmail push email and Google Talk running in the background as well.

If you're going to surf and all that, the battery will drain if you don't have the brightness down and possibly some way to throttle the CPU down. You are effectively using more energy than is being replenished.
It makes it about the same size as the phone with a stock battery inside the ballistic case without the silicon outside. But it's worth the money. Even on rooted GingerBread and the ICS leak I could still get right at a full day of moderate use from it.

I would agree something is causing a wake lock problem on your phone. Get better battery stats I think is free for being a forum member. It helped me find the offending app. In my case it was Whatsapp and more recently the update for power control widget. With AT&T official ICS I get 15 hours of light to medium use on the stock battery until I am at 50% and with the q-cell high caps city 15 hours of heavy use before it is at 50%. Under cm it was on about an hour longer before I hit 50%.

Also, if it's not getting a signal while in your locker, you will lose a lot of battery. I put my phone into airplane mode when I put it in my locker at work since it doesn't get signal in there. The other day I had it in my locker and forgot to put it in airplane mode, and I lost like 15% in 2 hours. I can put it in airplane mode and have it only drop 4% after like 6 hours.

I bought the Q-Cell battery after getting sick of charging the phone twice a day (with stock GB). After updating to the official ICS my battery life dropped to MAYBE 18 hours with the extended. After a week of this I finally read about having to do a factory reset. IMMEDIATELY after doing the reset, I began to have serious battery issues with the Q-Cell. Phone would not charge up past 57% no matter how long it would charge. If the charger was unplugged, the phone immediately shut off. If the phone was off and you plugged it in, it turned on. Took me almost two weeks before I was back home where the original stock battery is/was. Popped it back in and the phone seems to be back to normal.
I find it bizarrely coincidental that at the exact moment I did the factory reset the battery begins malfunctioning. So, I don't know if something in the ICS code keeps it from playing nice with extended batteries in general, or the Q-Cell specifically, or the Android gods decided to smite me down for no reason whatsoever.
Now to see if the reset fixed the battery drain issues or if my stock LG battery drains completely in around 3 hours. :silly:
But back to the original question, the Q-Cell gave me two full days with moderately heavy usage. But beware doing a factory reset with it installed, JUST IN CASE.
check your baseband

To extend battery life, I turn off all the wireless components except phone, for daily use.
And this works effectively.

Battery Drain Problem

So I bought my ATT GS3 out in Los Angeles this summer and then I returned to New Jersey to find that I have horrible battery life. It was not right away so this could be completely unrelated. As of right now my phone is at 75% and I let it drain while i was sleeping for 10.5 hours. I have tried several different roms which are usually good the first two days and then after that the battery life is bad again. I thought it may be some application I have installed so I removed a few of the ones I remembered downloading since I got back to NJ. I also updated to the latest radio ending in H9 because I was two behind when I checked. I have attached some battery information below. Any help anyone could provide would be great. I have tried Juice Defender which did save some battery life but it also caused a problem where I couldn't use the internet for 10 seconds after I wake the phone.
U need a Rom with cell standby fix

I thought the cell standby problem only effected the international GS3? If the cell standby fix was the problem then I shouldn't actually be draining that low right? Something must be draining the battery then. Google maps is probably draining the battery but how do I stop that from happening?

Just another observation. Battery tends to drain faster if you leave it in your pocket. If you flash a rom, you might have to calibrate the battery stats. I only lose 1% every 2 hours overnight if I leave it on a cold surface.

So I have tried a few different roms and I'm still not happy with the battery life. I calibrate the battery after every rom installed and I usually keep that rom for atleast 2 days to test it. Right now I'm on AOKP. If the phone is on standby whats the general %/hr? When I go to sleep my phone drops from 92%-75% for about 10-11 hours (on desk at temp 60F). By Apocalypse487's response I should only see a drop of 5-6 % over night when I see 17%. Am I supposed to me losing this much battery life over night? To me I feel like I barely use my phone. Today wasn't too bad with 1 hr with screen on and about 1 hr in calls. I made it about 1 day 1 hour 36min on battery. My phone was sleeping for about 23.5 hours. Is this the typical battery life or is something wrong with mine? Tonight I'm going to try juicedefender and see if that helps.

I'm using ParanoidAndroid based off of CM10. Version 2.16 of PA gave me the best battery life. Try that. Certain Roms have better battery management, but that probably depends on the kernel. PA uses stock.

I'll give ParanoidAndroid a try and see what that does. So Juicedefender ended up making it so I only lost 1% over 9 hours. Thats pretty good. Way better than I wanted. So what could be draining the power over night. Is it because my data is on all the time but shut off when using Juicedefender?
I use Trinue 2, and I use an app called Go Power Master.
In GPM you can setup options that will turn off mobile data/gps/wifi when the screen is turned off, will automatically turn them back on when the screen is back on.
Those things little things I find can make a big difference for the battery to last throughout the day.

It's as Sianspheric says, common things like gps, data, and wifi uses power. I just started using Juicedefender since my friend told me it helps. Also download battery calibration. It's a root only app. Don't let your device discharge completely. It's bad for Lithium Ion batteries. That will clear out any bad data from Samsung.

Battery Issues

I started running into some battery issues earlier today. I was on AOKP without any issues and one day the battery just started draining very fast. I went from about 50% to 15% in a matter of an hour. That night I slept with my phone charging and it did to get charged passd 54%. And it's charging very slow too. I thought it might be the ROM so I flashed Slim Bean. But it is not heling at all.
Anyone have anything similar going on?
What can I do?
Try calibrating the battery and go like 2-3 charge to discharge and see what its like afterwards

Yea it takes a few rundowns to get into the sweet spot, I thought I was getting horrible battery life till someone suggested that to me now I get about 32-33 hrs on a charge. Which I think is about prefect, I don't game on it I just use everything else all the time. I have ps3, xbox360 & psp for gaming
Sent from my SGH-I747M using xda premium
Well it's been charging for about 6 hours now and it won't get past 54%
I let it charge all night and when I woke up it was finally at 100%. I left for class and unplugged my phone at 7:40. 20 minutes later it was down to 47%. Then another 2 hours later, it was at 11%. Obviously it is draining far too fast. Will AT&T replace my battery? Or does it look like I'm gonna have to buy a new one?
What I normally do is charge it to 100% then boot into recovery and wipe battery stats. Reboot and don't unplug the phone until it again says that the battery is full. Then run with it and see if it helps.
Go ask them I don't see why they wouldn't replace the battery, it does sound like its shot that kind of drain isn't normal at all
Sent from my SGH-I747M using xda premium
I had the same issues with not getting to 100%. Seems like leaving it on the charger for another couple hours (overnight) got it there.
So I went to the AT&T service shop yesterday and she took my battery and put it in a different Galaxy S III and it showed the battery was charged 97%. In my phone, it showed 23%. She told me that it had somthing to do with my phone being rooted. She said the software on my phone was being "tricked" into believing that the battery is a lot less full than it actually is. She told me to unroot my phone and flash it back to stock. So I did that yesterday and it is still no better. I don't know what to try.

I would unroot and take everything back to stock, then go back to the AT&T store you went to before and show another service rep that the phone is messed up and see if they give you another one.

mrb1946,
Even though your S3 is reporting percentage values as you stated....the PHYSICAL battery did not drain from a real 100% to a real 47% in 20 minutes. It can't actually physically drain that fast. It would be on FIRE! So, either the calibration of the rom/software or the battery itself somehow messed up.
Also, during that time...was the battery/S3 HOT? That physical evidence would account for some of the drain if it's coming from a rogue app or misbehaving rom component. Did you post a battery drain graph? And were you monitoring the cpu activity during these high drain periods? I mean...periodic checks to see if your CPU is stuck on HIGH freq and if you have any wakelocks shown under the battery graph.
If this problem is still occurring, here's a thread explaining a possible drain from android system. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1827087&highlight=android+system

[Q] Short battery life

I've had my Galaxy W for just over a year. Whilst I was running the stock ROM I would more or less get a full day out of the battery. I upgraded rooted my device and installed the Cyanogen CM9 rc2 ROM. I don't recall any battery problems at first, but just over a week ago it started draining within five or six hours. This happened every day for a week.
Since then I have uninstaleld all apps (apart from Google Authenticator which I couldn't manage without), turned off wifi, bluetooth and everything else I could think of. Now I seem to be getting about 36 hours out of the battery... Although I think it goes from 35% down to 10% very, very quickly.
Leaving all data connections off and having no apps is okay in the short term, but is there a long term software solution?

I don't know enough about this, but I expected that the phone would spend a higher percentage of it's time in 'deep sleep' than that.

For battery problem is either the phone calibrated wrong readings on the battery or the battery it self is the problem.
If you use your phone not too often but the deep sleep only reach 34% of the time then some apps is preventing the deep sleep, try to check what apps is that causes that with some battery stats app, try search it in xda or market

I've gone for Battery Stats Plus. I'll reenable wifi, bluetooth and 3G for a few days and see what happens. If that takes a toll on the battery I will post back with details from Battery Stats Plus.
I will also take the battery out later to inspect it.
Update:
My battery had 15-20% remaining and I turned it off, and tried to turn it back on. It now thinks that it does not have enough power to boot the phone. I don't know if that new information is helpful or not.

With 15 - 20% it should have boot, because it still have juice left. What about your battery physics? Is it bloating or just normal?

Took the battery out this morning for a proper look. There's definitely some bloating. Time to get looking for a replacement battery?
Could there be two issues here? As from the screenshots I posted the phone doesn't seem to have spent a lot of time in deep sleep.
I was just watching a YouTube video, with about 70% battery. The phone turned off, and when I've turned it back on it's gone down to 2%.
Could this be down to an improperly calibrated battery, or is it purely down to the physical damage/bloating to the battery?

most probably you suffer wrong calibrated battery problem , I think
sorry I didnt see your first post (about bloating) :/ , definetely you should buy a new battery
Thanks for your advice.
I'm going to install Battery Calibration by Nema from Google Play. I'll see how I get on with that.
I'm going to order a replacement battery this week. I'm looking for a direct replacement, with an official Samsung battery. I have posted here in the Accessories forum. I hope that was the right place to put it.
After I install the CM10 alpha 6 conform to the first post, the battery life of my cellphone has been drained very fast - 21% about 6 hours and half.
Can anyone help me, please? I already did the battery calibration and I can't see effects. I'm wondering if is better install CM 9 or just go back to the android 2.3.6 factory version of my cellphone.

Your battery is bloated? Then you *must* replace it. Period.
A damaged battery is the root cause of myriads of problems. Until that battery is replaced, you _will_ experience all kinds of annoyances, no matter what ROM/Kernel you're using, including inexplicable battery drain.

My cellphone is 1 year and half old. On android factory version the battery last for about 30 hours. In CM10 the battery don't last more than 12 hours.

Galaxy Nexus Horrible battery

hi guys,
sorry i'm noob and this is second time im posting on xda forum. I recently bought a Galaxy Nexus Made in korea by samsung. It's currently running on 4.3 latest update phone doesn't lagg or nothing happend like crashes etc but please see below major problems im facing.
Phone getting hotter from back side where camera is installed
0 to 100% it take 5-7 hours to charge ( I tried both wall and USB)
I charged the phone to 100% in night and i didn't use the phone night in morning when i check the phone the batter was at only 12% left. the phone eat all the battery in 7 hours the most battery was used by phone idle 57% and stand by 33% & i didn't put any sim card in the phone whole night and automatic wifi was on which was only 17% battery.
again i charged the phone to 100% close the automatic wifi and insert a sim card
The result is like
After 3 hours 57 mins battery was at 52%
Screen take 49% total screen on time 16m 1s
Phone Idle 22% 3h 41m 29s
cell stand by 10% 3h 54m 55s
Android system 5% (CPU TOTAL 1m 47s *** CPU foreground 33s *** Keep awake 1m 19s)
I don't know what was the battery time before 4.3 update becuz when i buy this set it came with 4.3 and i bought this 3 days ago. Is this a battery problem or the phone problem or its the android ???? any type of help is welcome
Thanks in advance
The Galaxy Nexus is known for its not so great battery. It also just depends on how you use it. If you are playing games, watching videos, etc. it will drain fast. If you just check a few things here and there, it will last longer. That's common sense. But yes, compared to other phones, the Galaxy Nexus sucks with battery. Theres not much you can really do software wise. The best thing you can do is get a bigger battery or a spare battery. I have a charger pretty much wherever I am so battery isnt an issue for me. But if you are someone who is on the move all day, I would suggest a spare or an extended battery.
EDIT: Actually, looking at your screen time, you are getting a bit above average on phone idle. Right now, my phone idle is at 8%

Yes i read that and i planned to get extended battery but the cell eating the battery while screen is off. I'm just confused about the OS 4.3 i read alot about that after updating to 4.3 nexus 7 user experiencing of slow charging and battery draining but as you seen in attached pic the phone eating battery without any usage the total on screen time is 6 min and in 3hrs 57 min 48% battery gone ?? so in your opinion what is the prob is it OS, phone or the battery ?

Well I see in your screenshots that it looks like you don't have any cell service. What could be happening is that your phone is constantly searching for a connection, which could eat up a lot of battery.
best bet

youre best bet if rooted and unlocked is to install a custon kernel and underclock it to about 1000 mhz ... install dark themed apps or theme chooser theme also us a black wallpaper .. turn off 4g . ... turn off nfc when not in use .. make sure youre using the oem charger to charge the battery .. use wifi whenever possible .. also turn off anything like hotword detection that is constantly listening

The mobile service was on but data service was disable i received 2 calls and some texts msgs 2 but they are not long or didn't took the battery. All syncs were off and location to. But the battery is going down very badly. Please see new attached files of last night. The cell was at 87% battery and in the morning the battery was dead.
Try using something like Better Battery Stats or GSAM and see what they say is draining your battery.
With the current info given, I would lean toward thinking it is a hardware issue. Perhaps your battery doesn't properly hold a charge anymore.

Few hours ago i left for office the cell was on 14% charging and turn-off the cell and put it in pocket. After 1 hour when i reach to office i was trying to turn on the cell but the battery was dead and then i put it on charging and it start from 6% and turned on. I think the battery is not holding charging . The battery is in made in Korea and have NFC details on it. I think its the original battery but its not use able any more. i will try above mentioned widgets before changing the battery.
new screen shots
didn't use the phone and it ate all battery. Any guesses what's wrong with the phone???
need a fast reply.
Try updating the radios (I don't remember how to do it. U dial #something). Also, have gps and 4g turned off. Auto brightness turned on. If u have the Facebook app, get rid of it and just use the mobile site.

4g/3g are off and i ticked use only 2G network. Facebook app is deleted brightness is set to auto GPS every thing is off but mobile consuming battery without any usage.... im just confuse about that its the hardware prob or i have to flash some other rom?
bump! any 1 with solution ?
U really need to get better battery stats. It will tell u specifically what wake locks r causing the problem. Idk if using only 2g is a good idea, u may be burning battery with apps constantly searching for a data connection. Can u access wifi? That takes up less battery than data (3g or 4g). U may want to buy a new battery, they aren't that expensive. U can get one on amazon for like $15. If that doesn't work, I'd try flashing a different rom, maybe even a custom kernel.
I am still running 4.1.2 because I like it better than the newer versions and my battery life isn't bad. I usually get close to 2.5hrs of screen on time. More than a day of standby. Obviously, if I make a lot of calls I will get less battery life. I'm running eclipse rom with leankernel.

Today i flashed Cyanogen mode 10.1.3. i didnt flashed any google apps just to check what eat battery. When i flashed the ROM the battery was at 36%. I used the mobile for almost 1 hour and on screen time was 54min 37sec and battery left 16%. The cell eat total 20% battery in 1 hour continues on without mobile data network and 2G was on. Wifi GPS every thing was off and brightness was set to auto. At 16% battery i stop using mobile and after 30 mins i check mobile it eat 6% battery in 30 min without any usage. then i truns off the phone and after 30 mins i tried to turn on the cell the battery was dead. then i plugged in the charger and i turn the cell on. The battery charge start from 10% but instead of charging i start loosing battery. then i charged for almost 1 hour on 0% battery and took 5 hours to fully charged. My cell phone drain all battery over night under the usage of phone idle 73%. I'm just confuse about that its the battery issue or its cell phone problem. and my phone getting very hot from back left side. I just need a good developer advise if this is hardware issue then i'm gonna replace the cell phone and if its the battery issue and hardware is ok then i will get a new battery and continue using and 1 more thing my phone get little hot even its turned off from back left side and sim jacket side.
Bump! any suggestion ?
I doubt a developer can answer that question. Could be phone, could be battery. I would try a, new battery just cuz it's cheaper than a new phone. Maybe go back to stock and see if that helps. If not, call Verizon and complain, they may send u a refurbished unit.

I flashed ICS 4.0.4 but the highest stat on battery graph is phone idle. The battery was 36% in night and after 3hr 1min the cell was dead. then i put the cell on charge and checked the stats. Phone idle was on top 43% , then screen 30%, cell standby 19%, android system 7%, media server 2%, Android os 2%.

Try going to 4.3 via fastboot. With the flash-all.bat that will wipe everything. That might solve it
