Should I get OtterBox Commuter? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

So I'm just curious that if I should pay 45bucks for OtterBox... I do want a great protection. But I don't want a huge bulk... I am willing to pay 45bucks if that's must. I need your guys opinion!

First off amazon sells it for like ~$23. Secondly, it is a lint MAGNET, I got so fed up with it collecting dust/lint that I couldn't take it anymore and returned it. Get a CruzerLite Androidified case, it fits the normal extended batteries, looks sleek, and will give you protection.

Will it be as protective as OtterBox or is it in durable side?

I have a commuter and it doesn't attract that much lint.. plus there are only the 4 couriers showing of the gelcase, the rest is the hard plastic.

While I didn't purchase one for my GN, I did have one on my previous phone. Nice case, but the silicone on the edges wear out a bit after a while and gets kind of loose. My biggest problem with commuters is the slippery plastic. For me, the feel of a case is right up there in priorities. The Seidio surface case has a nice soft touch covering on it and it protects the edges and provides a nice lip around the screen so it doesn't touch when you set it down on that side.

I purchased the Defender and love it...amazon has it cheap as well

Very happy with the Commuter. I had one for my the Hero before i got this phone too and i couldn't recommend them enough.
I personally like that it has a "slippery" hard cover on the back so its easier to slip in and out of pockets. The front side still has the rubberized feel, if you need to put it somewhere that it won't slip. I do this while driving and just place it face down.
I have to say the version for the GN seems more solid and a tighter fit than what I used on the Hero. Only minor complaint is that the screen protector that comes with it doesn't cover the entire screen. Its still decent, though.
I'm thinking about trying a zagg screen protector, but i've read that people say it won't stay on when applied to phones with a case.
edit: got mine at thecellguru.com....seems to be the best deal going.

I use the OB Commuter on both mine and my fiances Gnexus.
I'm overly careful with my electronics so it's worked great,. She's hard as hell on them since she hates smartphones, would rather have a old flip phone, and just drops it, leaves it on the kitchen counter while she bakes, all sorts of stuff and her's doesn't have a scratch.
Love Otterbox and definitely buy thru Amazon. Save your money

I have the otterbox defender for my galaxy 1 and it was a dirt and dust/lint magnet and it always made my screen dirty! but I gotta say it saved my phone many times and that's what it was made for!

Any one using the commuter with a GSM gnex + samsung original extended battery ?

I really like the case but it definitely adds a bit of bulk. Look at the difference between these two phones.
Great case tho. I really like it.

Gotta agree. And the names for materials used get more and more ridiculous too.
"Ballistic shock absorbent polymer" you mean..silicones?
Thanks for sharing though
I love this case for the nexus s. I want to buy a pair of them for both me and the wife. I have the extended battery GSM and hers is the normal GSM. I'm sure they made it specifically for the Verizon model but I'd like to see a review testing it on the various models. You would think it would work on the extended Verizon model. If so, it should fit. Just don't want to plunk down money on two cases and have it not fit.
By the way, these cases are awesome for the nexus s. My wife is very hard on her phones, and this thing delivers on protection. Its not waterproof but other than that its great!

I like the way these cases look until I start using them on the phone. Good protection but just like the otterbox and toughcase I had they just add too much bulk. So I always wind up going back to my rearth ringke slim. But if you think these cases are too expensive, imagine the alternative when the case may have saved your phone? Just sayin...
I ordered it today as I personally like to have a few cases. I currently have the otterbox commuter as the daily case, but would like to have this ballastic case as a "heavy duty" case for outdoor activities and what not. From what I hear from nexus s and iphone users, these cases are life savers. Through I must admit Ballistic polymer sounds like a fancy name for abs plastic... marketing gimmick 101...LOL

I kind of like the extra bulk of the thick cases. The phone by itself almost feels too thin and too slippery in the hand without a case.
I'm currently using the Incipio case on my GSM Gnex and it feels just right.
134$ for shipping to denmark Are they fu****g crazy
OK... received my case today. I got it for about 20 bucks from amazon. Its the genuine item. The case is similar to the one for the nexus s.
I emailed ballistic about the fit of the case since I have a GSM with extended battery. They told me that it won't fit either GSM or Verizon with the extended battery. I mainly got it for my wife who doesn't have the extended battery but wanted to check the fit on mine.
It fits! It fits just fine on GSM extended models. Fit and finish is nice like all ballistic cases but this one smelled like a dirty suitcase. Im sure the smell will go away but I don't remember my nexus s case smelling like that.
The case feels good in the hand but does add a lot of bulk so not a thin option. Great drop protection though.

I got my Ballastic case today and I am pleased to say it fit my GSM just fine...no issues. And mine has no odor or smell whatsoever. Overall, the design reminds me a LOT of the OB commuter case, except for the trade mark bulky edges on the ballastic. The overall silicone is thinner than I had expected, but the case looks great for a thicker case IMO. The button cut outs are right on the money, unlike my commuter. There are no dust covers for the ports, so perhaps the commuter has the edge in terms of dust protection, but some people find those silicone flaps annoying to open, so it depends on the person.
Why is this case not getting more play? Its the best tough case out there for this phone and its 30 bucks on Amazon. Go go go
I'll take some pics tomorrow. No videos though

Thats one ugly m0th*rf**ker, if you think you need that to protect your phone, leave it at home, you'll never get a scratch. 34$ for a good looking case, complementing the looks of the phone no problem, paying 34$ for a cheap silicone case: priceless.

Well beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I currently use the sgp Neo hybrid and it does look nice, but some people need more protection than that. If you think the commuter, defender, or kraken cases look good either then you're crazy. They are what they are to protect the function of the phone. Btw, the ballistic is not just cheap silicone. The base part is silicone, then poly carbonate shell, and a rubberized coating on the shell. Also, those bumpers do an awesome job absorbing impact.

Well, depends if you want something a bit more bulkier but have better protection, or the opposite. I for one am not a big fan of cases but like to have a bit of protection from scrapes, I dropped my Vibrant once, that was 2 phones ago. I went with the Incipio Feather case, barely there, only thing is top and bottom aren't protected. Good luck.

It depends on what kind of protection you're looking for. I have a Casemate Vroom for normal use & a casemate Tough for heavy protection. I've spent a small fortune on cases/screen protectors. And found my favorite product to be Carbon Fiber Ghost Armor & Screen Protectors. Otterbox makes great cases and has a great customer support team.Im currently using a clear S wave TPU case that shows off my Ghost Armor.

Speck Pixelskin HD, a little expensive but works great with regular and extended batteries.
i use this one. i like it because it covers the screen when not in use but it's still thin enough to fit in my front pants pocket.
Had an otterbox commuter on my Evo. Mistakenly left it in the roof of my car and drove off. Heard something fly off car at about 35 mph. Realized my mistake, turned around and found out in middle of road. Not a scratch on it. Was sold on otterbox from then on out.
Had otterbox commuter and a defender for my Evo 3D. Like the commuter better.

Freaking love that case. It fits pretty well.
Concerning the Otterbox Defender:
I bought this case immediately after purchasing my Galaxy Nexus. I work in construction and as a result my phones tend to take a bit of a beating, so since I paid full price for the handset I thought it best to protect it with the most rugged case on the market.
I came home from my first day of work with the new handset, dusted off the phone, and immediately saw small chunks of sawdust lodged between the screen protector and the screen. Popped the case apart and was shocked to find the hard plastic otterbox case just full of construction debris. Just tons of insulation dust, sawdust, and concrete particulate, stuck between the case and the phone quickly grinding away at my $700 chunk of plastic and glass. ... and that's with me being careful with my new toy.
Upon further examination, I found the edges of my new phone scuffed, marred, and pitted, and the damage has only gotten worse since then.
Considering Future Shop raped me to the tune of $80 for the case, frankly I'm not impressed.
For comparison's sake, I bought my Nexus S new, tossed it in my old HTC G1 pouch, and went to work everyday. The phone remained nearly flawless until I finally spiked it off of my kitchen floor out of frustration with Mobilicity's network.
Another thing about the defender... When the phone is in the holster, the headphone port is obscured and thus unusable. A little trimming of the holster with a dremel or the like would probably do the trick, but frankly at this price point I don't feel that you should have to be hacking away at anything with power tools to make it work properly.
Caveat Emptor - Let the Buyer Beware.
Not sure what the deal is with my pics not showing, but if they did you would see a gnex with it's edges chewed to **** after only one day in the case.

Yeah it attracts lint. Gets kind of frustrating. Compatible with extended battery too. I'm buying the Rearth Slim case to try it out, it's apparently very low-profile.
One thing that I dislike about the Otterbox Commuter is the lack of grip when compared to other cases such as the Case-mate tough case though.

i agree, out of all my cases the otter was the worst because of how slippery it was and it made the phone very bulky. if you dont want your phone to be too thick def dont get this case it will almost double the thickness of your phone.
i have been buying case, skin, an screen protector. in the end, running naked still the best. no case no screen protector.
I'm using the OtterBox Commuter case. And I really love the quality, and my phone is very protected in it. The downside is that it makes the phone really bulky and thick. So I'm gonna replace it soon I think, and use the OtterBox when I need the extra protection.
Searched alot for other cases on ebay, but they all seem so cheap and low quality. Found, and ordered, this though. Hope it's good when it arrives. It's made of aluminium and metal.

You will probably have reduced reception. A plain ole simple tpu is a great balance between protection and thickness.

i spent $500 on this phone, i'd like to keep it in perfect condition. i'll sacrifice the few mm of extra thickness for piece of mind that it won't get smashed.
With a case on, you can't see the phone.

Otterbox Top Quality
I've owned three Commuter cases (for Samsung Captivate, Infuse, and Note) and you can't beat them for the protection.
The only issues I have had are how the clips are attached to the plate. Twice I've had them break on me, BUT, Otterbox has been very prompt at sending me a FREE replacement. I also have to say that each time I was leaning in such a way that I was putting pressure on the belt clip, so I can't entirely fault the clip. Since they replaced it (promptly), I have no negative feelings.
Although they are a bit pricey, you can definitely see why they do cost more. I would HIGHLY recommend them. They give your phone top-notch protection. :good:
I bought the case today and compared to the case mate tough this provides much more protection however it does the phone slippery due to the hardcover having minimal grip. The biggest gripe I have with this case is the power and volume rockers are really difficult to press and I have contacted otterbox about it and just awaiting reply now.

Anybody using the commuter in a car mount yet ? If so which one, and any chance of a few piccies ?
Also, does the thickness of the case interfere with the NFC at all ?

There are other colors of this case that may look better with the white version.
Here is a pic of the white otterbox commuter

Yeah I have to agree the white case does look a lot nicer than the black case

I didn't have an issue with the grip of the case but the buttons are a big problem. I did point it out in my review. The trident case is a lot better button wise.
A lot of people have been interested in the differences between the commuter and trident aegis cases so I'm about to film a quick comparison

I'd personally go for the trident if it was the same price as the otterbox

great review, I have been searching for a gal s3 specific otterbox review and haven't found any... until now.
That is an issue re the lovely sleek lithe lines of the s3 being covered and ruined by protection, but as has been said, thats the trade off i guess.
I am having a really hard time deciding between a few cases. Bought the invisible skin full body protector (it's my goto scratch protection despite niggles with it) and that will sit beneath any case I buy. May have to take the rear skin off to fit but will cross that bridge...
Fancied a defender but the built in screen protector bothers me as I am worried about it fading and misting over time, where as the commuter does allow for the separate screen skin which then can be removed and replaced independently if required.
Would really like the defender but it is increasingly looking like the commuter will be the best solution :/
I just picked the Aegis off eBay for $26 shipped. Good case so far.

Dual-layer cases: Help me choose

Trying to decide between the following dual layer cases (gel case inside hard shell):
Incipio SA-302 Silicrylic Hard Shell Case with Silicone Core for Samsung Galaxy S III:
http://www.amazon.com/Incipio-SA-30...amsung/dp/B0085VAP38/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top
OR
Acase Samsung Galaxy S3 Case - Superleggera PRO Dual Layer Protection
http://www.amazon.com/Acase-Samsung...TF8&colid=33C4MLEZBFXGX&coliid=I1UD19IUIONB25
They are very similar. Does anyone have experience with either of these? I have small hands, so I don't want to drop my brand new GSIII and break it!
Grab an otterbox commuter. It's protect your phone well and protect your phone from dust too as it has the cover caps. It's only add a little bit bulk..^^

It gets better with time.
I have the Incipio in the Verizon blue. It's fine, but I'll be ordering the OB Defender. Every time I'm on a crowded sidewalk or the train platform, all I think about is someone walking into me causing my phone to drop onto concrete... Chills. Lol

Ordered me an otterbox commuter , Sgp neo hybrid , and Sgp ultra crystal . What is the best screen protector guys ? I been thinking trying to research it but it's confusing . I wanted one to cover the full screen but bought thru phone already so I just got the Sgp ultra clear for now
I currently have a Zagg HD on mine, so far so good. Smooth like glass, unlike their "standard" one which has a plastic feel. Either will work. Have not tried the screen part since I have the Zagg, but I picked up the ArmorShield (supposed to be Zagg eqiv.) and the shield for the rest of the phone is good. Got a good deal on an otterbox so thats going on as well when I get it.
I'm in the same boat as the OP
So many cases around still not sure which one
Here's a few other options as well
Interested in hearing what others have to say
Seidio Active

Apparently only adds 2.2mm to each side so 4.4mm overall which isn't too bad IMO
I've read that this case is easy to put on and take off
You can get it with a holster and/or stand as well

Bro, for seidio active case, the soft silicone part will get loose after few week of using especially the top & bottom part. For case-mate tough, my brother using casemate tough case, drop once from 3 feet high, the hard shell break. :crying:
Conclusion, grab a Commuter or Ballistic SG and you can't go wrong with both of these premium case. :good:
I have casemate and OB. Both are great. Just switched back to OB today...its better than the casemate. Close but I will stick.with the OB.

I have the Acase. Originally, I was going to get the speck dual layer case, but I looked at the review from the acase at amazon and it seems better. I also looked at the retail price and its "retail value" seems more, so that's one reason why I got it. So far, great case. Protects both back and side, and front when placing down on a flat table. One time, I accidentally bumped the cellphone on a side of the table and it grazed the case, but no damage to the phone. Glad I have acase on.
From what I saw, the Incipio is pretty similar, so it wouldn't hurt if you get that or the Acase. Just know that the price point is about the same on Amazon, but the retail value is different; The acase is about 40 and the incipio is about 30. I usually choose the higher price, believing that it is the better quality. But that is my bias.
The otterbox commuter or defender are great cases. I have no problems with the defender buttons, the commuter got better after about a week but I wanted the holster the defender came with. I did however take off the screen protector the defender came with. I also tried the Acase like you show above and it is ok but no where near as protective as the otterbox. Oh and the Otterbox Defender is on Amazon for about 29.00.
Trident Kraken has yet to fail me in terms of protection. I drop and toss my phone to demonstrate it for people everyday. Plus they have quite a few different color options.
Only thing that has failed was the belt clip broke. But contacted customer service and I had a new one in 4 days.
Sent from Pluto.
Go with the Acase. You can't beat the price and the case is great! Nothing against the other cases, but this case is just as good if not better. Hell, you could get two for the price of some of the other ones. Here's my review when I first made purchased it:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1764709
It's still my all around favorite case. You really can't go wrong with this case.
Currently not being productive on my S3.
UAG case for me, I don't have a screen protector but I did have a zagg hd and it was just terrible (actually went through two if them with the same issues). I will be getting a specter glass protector and I'm hoping it will be compatible with my case

I will be doing a review for Cruzerlite's new protection case soon. I will post links.
It competes with the otterbox.

Hated my Otterbox Commuter... didn't look good whatsoever, and the button mashing problem was enough to make me return it after two days of use (I know it "gets better" after use, but when you pay any amount of money, it should work out of the box).
Went to the Speck Candyshell and I love it (its dual layer as well).

By design. Impact hits and the outer hard shell breaks apart to absorb most of the impact. Then the case can tumble on the ground with the polycarbonate case with very light impact.
