[Q[[Galaxy Nexus GSM] Why does it change to gprs or edge during a call? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Hi folks, I have a GSM Galaxy Nexus running Android Jelly Bean (4.1.1). Since I bought it, with ICS, and even now it has had the same problem: whenever I start a call or answer one, it immediately changes to 2g (I checked on settings, sometimes it's gprs, sometimes EDGE, but always 2g). This results in poor call quality and in several cases, dropped calls. When I'm not on a call, the 3G works fine and fast.
I checked this forum and didn't find any question regarding this matter, does any one has the same issue or it's just my phone? Is it a bug or is it meant to be this way?
Thanks,

Definitely not meant to work that way. I'd talk to your carrier. Might be a network or SIM problem.

Thanks, apparently my carrier (Personal Argentina) doesn't have a clue why this is happening. I'm gonna change sims and update if there are any changes

It was the SIM card, I changed it and now it works fine. Thanks :good:

No problem. Glad you fixed it.

Ive got this too

Try asking your carrier for another sim, it did the trick for me.. Before doing that, try asking a friend another sim to check if that's actually the problem

Weird GSM issue on T-Mobile?

Its somewhat sporadic but like just now I'm in an area of full hspa coverage and then all of a sudden the signal dies and it says no service. Usually an airplane mode toggle does the trick but this time I had to restart the phone to get it back. I just had installed widgetsoid so not sure if its related but I've uninstalled it for now. Anybody see similar?

I have not experienced this with Tmobile and the nexus but I know if you used a toggle app for some Verizon lte phones you would have to call in and provision the phone again..had widgetsoid installed earlier but did not fool with the toggles

I sometimes lose my signal exiting the subway. It's like it just doesn't reconnect. It has happened on my nexus s as well.

What baseband are you guys running?
If your APN settings for Data have a proxy entered, try removing it as well as the port. That can cause issues sometimes.
The above is assuming your carrier would allow you to use it without the proxy.

This sounds like the problem I have. I think its just a T-Mobile issue since I remember having this issue a few times on Sensation. I just hope they try to fix this in future basebands and software.

try contacting them and have them reset your connection to the tower???
dunno if that would help, but i always do that when i switch out my phones.

It doesn't happen that often. Its actually rather rare. My SIM is pretty old, I've had it since before TMo even got 3G. I was thinking of going into a store and asking for a replacement just to rule that out.

I as well have the exact same problem with the Mytouch. I have found that keeping it at 2G will preserve my connection though at limited speeds and I can simply bump up to 3/4G when I have to. It kinda sucks due to the reconnection time but it saves me battery and random signal loss

[Q][GSM] Losing data connection all the time

A few weeks ago I started to have this problem; i'm ussually connected to the HDSPA network, but the phone turns data off all the time and the only way to get the signal back is rebooting (even turning on and off plane mode doesn't solve it). Calls work perfectly.
I'm on stock 4.0.4, no modified kernels or roms. My carrier is Simyo, Spain.

That´s not my problem; the phone functions work great all the time, but data connection goes off. It happened when I was on 4.0.2 and now on 4.0.4 the issue is still there.
I too am having this same issue with a GSM Galaxy Nexus on stock yakju 4.0.4, but I'm in Canada on the Bell network, and did change the radio to the one they install on their phones.
I've been having this same problem just in the last day or two, ever since I enabled NFC. 4.04, stock kernel, calls go through as normal but no network data. When I disable NFC, everything is back to normal. Anyone else notice conflict with NFC enabled?

I believe this is with the 4.0.4 IMM76D build, it's fixed on 4.0.4 IMM76I.
Again, what the OP has reported, and I am experiencing the same, is that network connectivity does not drop, rather that at least in some scenarios (as is my experience with NFC enabled) network data drops. Really curious if anyone else out there has seen the same on the most recent build and in particular if anyone else has seen a conflict with NFC enabled.
Try matching your radio interface layer with the radio version. This app will help

My baseband and RIL match. Now i'm using franco m4 but the problem persists.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA
RIL and baseband matching here too. Thx for suggestion though. Handy little app too.
Unrelated, perhaps.
Sorry, but this might not be related: I have an issue with the phone going into 2G when I'm at work -- 23rd floor office. I must manually change it to 2G/Edge every time. All the other folks around me seem to continue without issue and are able to make calls although their signal isn't too hot. GetRIL says baseband and RIL match. I'm using XXLA2 on AT&T in NYC.
Tried searching around for a solution, but I'm not finding anything.
I had the data drop issue as well, not sure if this is related, but around the same time I matched up my RIL, I also switched from francokernel to glados. I have been using glados 1.34 & have not had the issue since.

I've noticed that data connection seems to drop when I switch apps. Does this happen to anybody else? Whenever I switch from one app to another, say from Chrome to Twitter, data connection is lost and then reconnects in about 5 to 10 seconds. There's been occasions when I've lost network signal completely and the only fix, other than to reboot, seems to be to turn airplane mode on and to turn it off again.
I have a GSM Gnex. Is this a hardware problem or will it be fixed with 4.0.5?

[GSM/HSPA] Data connection loss

Is anybody else have problem with this? The connection often behave very strange. The only thing that "fix" this is a reboot of the mobile. Airplane mode off and on doesn't do the trick.

Sometimes I have to reboot the phone too to get data network to work again. I'm on stock JB.

Yes, I experienced that. All ROMs, all basebands. Seems to be an hardware issue. My Nexus is sent in because of that right now, and I hope it gets replaced.
Oh, and: Rebooting didn't help in any way. Network was before and after just the same: Plain horrible.
Exactly like that Phantom. Is many experience this problem? Maybe everybody with a GNexus? Is this problem serious enough to get a new phone? It's quite disturbing, it feels like my mobile will never be stable.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
Hey there,
I have exactly the same problem with GNexus. Wifi works fine, but 3G randomly stops working (can't check email, facebook and browse), reboot does help, but it's very annoying to turn off and on mobile phone. Did anyone manage to fix this problem or did you get a new phone?
Same problem even on 4.2
Hey guys,
I was wondering if you got any news about this as the problem is still persistent on stock 4.2.
One difference I noticed since 4.1 is that the data connection will rapidly switch from 3G to HSPA when the loss of connection appears. It doesn't solve the problem though...
For me, it seems the issue comes when you switch from HSPA to WiFi to HSPA and from HSPA to 2G/Edge to HSPA (and maybe after a long period of HSPA).
Never had a problem in 2G so I force it to avoid the reboot most of the time but it's slow...
I used my Galaxy Nexus on Tmobile in the US and on Free Mobile in France. So it's definitely not a provider problem I guess...
But on these two data plans, I have a limit of HSPA usage (3GB) which then should force the connection to 2G. So would the usage check by the provider would somehow mess up with the data connection?
Anyway, any info on this would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!
Max
I am having this issue as well. My roommate and we both have nexus 4 hers does not have this problem I am wondering what could be causing my phone to keep switching from 3g to HSPA + besides the sim
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
Anyone come up with a fix for this? Been searching all night and nothing useful except reboot which doesn't work. I'm getting the same problem on mine. After having the phone for a year or so, it just decided to go into this "Phantom Airplane mode" Only thing I did recently was I switched to T Mobile Straight Talk sim, because Straight Talk didn't have any more AT&T sim cards and I thought it was the sim card. This is just annoying me. lol. I tried everything, from reflashing to stock rom, to cm10.1, flashed some radios and basebands and nothing. I don't even know if I can get a replacement or fixed because it has been over a year which sucks. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

That was the problem I had with mine. I tried everything from wiping, to putting ROMs on to stock and still had the issues. Check your information like imei in your settings and if you have a lot of unknown s then you may have to send it in like I did.

My signal is horrible. Need help[Solved]

I have had this phone for about 4 or 5 days. When at my house I get 3g and only about 1 or 2 bars. This happened on my Samsung stratosphere too. Could this be a SIM card issue or hardware. I have read about a lot of people replacing this phone and still getting issues with signal. If I do bring my phone in to a Verizon store to get a sim card do I have to revert my phone to stock? I don't know if I should send my phone back or if where I live is just horrible for data. Sorry for so many questions.

Flash another baseband radio and if you are using custom rom with custom kernel then flash stock galaxy nexus's kernel.

Since it is the case for two phones, then maybe the 3G coverage is not good in your place.
Try asking others living around to confirm if they also suffer the same 3G coverage problem. Also try in another place to see if it still shows a weak signal everywhere or only at your place.
I do get better signals in different areas. Even with the 3g and 1 bar my speeds for browsing are decent but I just was wondering if a sim card or replacement would help. Thanks and I will ask some people

If you would like to try another baseband radio as suggested by manumanfred then this thread should help you if you have a Verizon Galaxy Nexus as it seems
Check this for baseband radios if you have a GSM Galaxy Nexus
I flashed the 4.0.4 radios and they didn't change. Should I try flashing again?

Flashing radios makes a slight, if at all a difference. Your best bet would be to keep calling and complaining to your provider, ive seen some success stories where others have been able to get verizon/att to pay for a 3g extender
Edit:Alright thanks. I think I am just in a bad area and I use wifi at my house anyways. Thanks
I accidentally misread the radio labels. The 4.0.4 did install.

I am not sure that an old radio will perform better than the newer one. Give them a try then choose the one that suits you better
Well I am going to have to switch back to the latest. Data barely turns on when on these 4.0.4 radios. I am not going to return my phone because I doubt mine is defective. Thanks to everyone for helping

It would be great if you mark this thread solved by adding something like "[SOLVED]" at the beginning of the current title
One more thing please is to make a habit of hitting the "Thanks" button to those who help you
Good Luck
4.0.4 radios are old. Try running something a little newer. I'm using FC04/FC05. Although honestly I don't really see a difference. Most of the time it just adjusts the timings between switching in and out of 4G... which I have disabled.
I would also recommend looking at a cellular booster/repeater. I work underground in the bottom floor of an office complex and we don't get signal from any carrier. We paid like $200 for a repeater and now we're good.

[Q] Sim Problem

Hello . I have a big problem with my Samsung Galaxy Nexus ..
Yesterday i was using my phone normal .. as usual and after a cuple of messages and phone calls i put it in my pocket .
i cecked it after a cuple of hours and my sim wasn't working.
i was using stock rom JB4.2.2.
i mention that only one carrier sim card's doesn't work .. if i put another sim from another carrier it work's normaly ..
did anyone had this problem before?
please help me.
sorry for my english/I'm from romania. !
I dont think anyone here can help you. It sounds like an issue with the card itself. Sounds like you should replace it.

If that's the case then I don't know. I'm on a carrier specific phone so I can't switch between multiple carriers. I'm not familiar with that. My understanding on that was that you just put the Sim in and you're good to go. I don't know of you have to activate anything. Maybe it just takes a little bit to actually get the signal. Have you switched them out before without issues?
