Would it be possible to utilize Google Now up-swipe as Navbar replacement? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Hi guys!
I searched the Galaxy Nexus section, but couldn't find something about it although I'm surely not the first to ask:
So, as thread title already says, would it be possible to use the semicircle that appears on swiping up for Google Now as a navbar replacement? I know there's LMT which does something like this, but last time I checked it did only allow swiping from the left and right side of the screen, not the bottom. Plus, a native integration or a mod would be cooler than a separate app
I saw a thread where the navbar was reduced to something like a 1px touch area for the Google Now swipe and LMT for navbar replacement. I think of something similar, only with functions like back/home/recents/menu integrated in the Google Now circle instead of using LMT.
Here's a pic I made with my uber skills to show you what I mean: (sorry, I'm at work and only have MS Paint and limited time )

Here Google Now could be launched by long-pressing home for example.
So, devs, what do you think? Possible or not? And is anyone but me interested in something like that?

i dont want to burst your bubble, but what would be the use of that ? Let's say that you would remove the navigation bar to use that. Impossible since it's in navigation bar. Hmm if you want to have access to these button, get your finger 20 mm lower.

Like I wrote in the first post, I wouldn't remove navbar completely, but you could reduce the width of it to 1 px since you'd just need it as a touch area for the swipe-up (you start the swipe offscreen and swipe over the 1 px navbar up to launch the circle.)
The use of that? More screen real estate, less burn-in than permanent navigation buttons, aesthetics. And it's system- wide available, just like the normal navbar (independent from launched apps etc.)
Just think of it as a deeper integrated alternative to the pie from LMT (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1330150), if you know that app.

forget that.

It could easily be done. Even LMT could be modified to work from the bottom. I wish it was open source.

This was the first thing I thought of when they released JB. I would love to see it happen so we wouldn't need 3rd party solutions like LMT.
I hope it's possible.

I thought the same when JB was released. So let's bump this thread until someone capable of coding recognises

I like the idea too, and I'd be willing to give it a shot if someone released it.
But it'd have to look aesthetically better than that screen shot above.

very good idea! i'd also like that

Lol, as I said, the above "design" was built at work with limited time and MS Paint, it's nothing like I imagine the solution I think of, it's just a proof of concept.
But I have no skills at coding or designing whatsoever, only an idea. So everything totally depends on someone who's more capable than me in both design an coding.
I'm glad that I'm not the only one who's interested in something like that though!

Yeah I figured as much it was just to illustrate the concept, no worries!

There is a CM9 based ROM with the functionality you are looking for:

I prefer this over any Jelly Bean ROM out there.

I wrote with Zaphod from Team KANG and he said they're gonna make the ring completely customizable, so you can set custom apps or navigation buttons or whatever you like (kinda what they did with the current navigation bar as well).
But I think these new features will only come after all AOPK features are merged into the JB builds.

Nice. I think I might switch to a rom just for this function. Right now I am on stock.

[Q] Miui battery bar ... On other roms! You can too

Title says it all.
I usually am somewhere between cm7 nightlies and Mikfroyo, but the other day I was feeling like trying something new and flashed the current Miui. I liked most of the features, but the battery bar that goes across the whole top of the screen really caught my eye. I was wondering if there was any way to use that in other roms? Any help is appreciated, thanks.
EDIT*: thanks to pvyParts, it is possible. Go look at his thread here
I asked this same question a while back, never got a responce. Hopefully this time we get good news

Well it looks like we are the only ones lol
I haven't used miui so I don't know exactly what you are talking about, but you could start by unzipping the framework-res.apk and looking around in there. Maybe you could provide a pic so I could get idea of what all might be involved?

Its a line that goes all the way across the top of the screen, it moves from right to left and changes color when the battery runs down. Id like to see this on my ROM too
winmo used to have something like this.
For anyone who doesn't know about the top-bar battery, here's a screenshot. And anyone trying to judge MIUI completely by this shot, keep in mind that this is a fresh install, and I haven't set it up yet.

The picture says it all. The battery meter across the top looks sexy to me (and other people apparently).
I will look around the .apk and see if I can find anything, thanks.
I am willing to do the legwork, if only I knew where the original file is located. I think we are on to something . Again, thanks for any information. I'll update tomorrow night if I find something useful.
But please, feel free to add any information that you might have.

I apologize for the newb question, but what do you mean? Is this part of the proprietary code involved with Miui? If so, it sounds like we are SOL..
Yes it is. This would be very hard to port because it is closed source.

yeah, it's gonna be hard, hard coded into the firmware would make that battery bar a permanent fixture, would be there through any rom flash, even show up in recovery or fastboot
that was indeed an option in the old WinMo 6.1/6.5.x "Kitchens"
i hated it =P
still unsure of it, but cool to see it here, didn't notice it when i last ran MIUI but that was the early Jan. release. My biggest complaint with MIUI is that all the settings are different(the actual menus themselves) ... nit picky perhaps but other than that MIUI is a p.sweet rom.
Yeah that looks to be more deeply embedded than a couple png changes. You would probably need to figure out what files manipulate the size and screen orientation of the battery meter. If you are serious about getting it, you could compare the miui build before that battery was implemented with the first version of miui that had the new battery. Using diff software you might be able to find all the battery changes.

Might be hard to get a version of MIUI without the top-bar battery. It's been in there since at least October, when I started using it.
As for the person wondering if you're SOL, the MIUI team had to add it with no examples or code, so it could be done in CM. It's just a matter of finding someone who's willing to do it from scratch.

I would be.
If only I knew how lol
Well I've looked around the framework-Res and I think I found the .pngs and the .XML file associated with the icon. But I can't see how it works. The XML is only 3 lines and doesn't seem like it would be animated when charging. But I don't have a good understanding of how it works and could be way off. Anyone else have a chance to look around? Or maybe have some ideas? Anything helps
Animated .png files? For that matter, it seems to me that the top battery could be made up of a bunch of small .png images: maybe like a 10x2 .png or something, placed next to each other across the top bar to do the battery level. The "animation" you see could be a script just moving one of those small images across the top bar to where the battery level currently is, also controlling acceleration and the like.
Just throwing a wild guess out there, but it would help if we knew what those .png files looked like.
*madly hoping something like this could be brought over to Sense* If it could, I'd permanently stick with Sense for quite a while, especially the new Sense coming out.
edit: cleared up the post a bit now that I'm not half-asleep...

I think this is it. If you get a chance to watch it charge, you'll see that a small "dot" or "particle" of the bar moves in from the right edge of the screen to the rest of the line.
For anyone trying to port this, if you haven't done so already, you should flash MIUI, change the battery to top-bar (menu -> settings -> system -> battery settings), and use it for a while. Make sure to put the phone on the charger and watch the animation for a bit, too.
When I have more time I'll go digging around... Which directory did you find those files in, Bamba?
edit: since it's a solid color (two technically, if you count the "low battery" color) I'm wondering if it's just a single .png that just gets resized based on battery percentage. alogcat gives the following message when I switch back to the top-bar battery, maybe that would be somewhere to look in... (If I had root explorer I would look myself, but saving up for Pokemon Black and White means not as much money right now)
Code:
E/BatteryStatsImpl( 310): java.io.FileNotFoundException: /sys/class/power_supply/battery/current_now (No such file or directory)

Musician looking to work on a new GNEX project!!

Hey XDA GNEX users!!
My name is MoOg, and I do music... I have been in music for over 25 years and I am thinking about making a project out of my works specificly for the Galaxy Nexus... I was thinking one day that it would be awesome to implement my works on either a boot image or possibly a ringtone project... I am only using this idea to start off with on the Galaxy Nexus, simply because it is the current phone that I am using... and the fact that I love the PURE Google experience with this phone... and I came up with this idea to make specific audio solely for this device... I have plenty of audio all over the web, and it would be a pleasure to seek out some fine developers to help out with this project... Let me know if you are interested... And to find all of my current works either check out my Soundcloud or Reverbnation... Just google "MoOg The Artist"
THANKS!!!

Well idk... It just seems like some of these sounds on the phones are boring... The only sound I really liked so far was the HTC ringtone that had the guitar loop that kept on dropping pitch after each set of notes... I think that this could change the face of Android development with newer sounds handmade and more adapted to what the kids like... lol... Maybe you and I can work on something now as well if you want... I do all kinds of sound editing and what not... I have lots of software to boot... I really think that there could be something made of this... The difference between my music and everything that is out there... I do everything from scratch and send it to a waveform editor... I can actually read soundwaves... It sounds crazy... But it's been something that I have been into since the early 90's/ late 80's...
I have a $1500 Roland Fantom synth, hours and hours on end for sounds that were recorded... as well as 14 albums (publicly released... not counting the unreleased tracks that have yet to be polished up and fed out to the public) to date... I haven't done anything with them besides releasing them onto Soundcloud, Facebook, Reverbnation, etc.
Let's see what we can accomplish by making the GNEX sound like a phone that people can relate to... Not just by it's features... But the feeling you get when you turn the thing on and it's sound pulls you further into the experience of the ROM...
and BTW... Please log on Facebook and LIKE my music page??? That's if you find my works enjoyable...
THANKS!!

The funny thing is, I didn't even know what a Moog was until I got into the electronic genre...
I've ironically had that name ever since I was a teenager...
I love this idea, and I like the samples you've created.
Here's some thoughts that quickly jump to mind..
Ringtones:
Well, those are easy, and your samples are a great start.
Custom notification sounds:
We need some good sounding, short (~2 seconds) sounds, melodies, snippets that we can use for texts, e-mails and such. Things I think would sound cool..8 bit sounds mixed with newer electronic sounds, bit trip series comes to mind (runner)..a quick piano line, possibly with something in the background to add depth..
System sounds:
There's not a lot I can think of for this one, other than don't go overboard, heheh. Too many sounds, especially louder more abrupt ones, would be annoying.
Will be working on this soon... gotta work tomorrow.. then off for 2 days...

+1 on this. On the subject of notifications, I currently use Kzurb sonar because the sound seems to cut through whatever ambient noise(car, practicing my bass etc) I'm around. Maybe not something just like that but something that can really pierce through.

Let me know if it's up to par... Thanks!
MoOg, besides making short ringtones, notification sounds, etc you might also want to look into writing background music for game developers or scores for videos. Also, the nice thing about music is that it isn't tied to a specific type of device. MP3 and midi files will play on a wide variety of hardware. Just my two cents.

Any disadvantages to ROMs without TouchWiz?

Hi - I haven't purchased the phone yet. I'm about to upgrade and I have a few questions for those of you in the know! What I want in my next phone is this:
Adequate internal memory (at least 16GB)
Great performance
Great camera
Pure Android
I value the "Pure Android" experience so much that I'm considering a GNex as well. But the camera and the slower performance of that phone have me doubting... So I'm thinking about getting the S3 and just putting stock JellyBean on it. If I do that, do I lose some of the benefits that I'm looking for? Namely, does the quality of photos taken with the phone suffer at all? Or does the performance take a hit at all because it doesn't have the TW optimizations?
Simple answer nope.
You can try a asop Rom. Like cm10.
But.....
Samsung did a great job with touchwiz this time around. I find all the extra features handy.

Yeah my wife has the S3 and I don't think I mind the stuff too much. My biggest gripe is the button configuration.
And I was planning on something like CM10.1 or something, but I know that camera performance suffers on the newer HTC stuff due to the ImageSense or whatever and I was wondering if it was the same story over here.

Took me a while to figure out what you were talking about... I mean the "physical" buttons - the capacitive (sp?) ones below the screen. But with it being basically the best sold Android phone EVAR I guess Google can't just up and decide that they will ignore capacitive buttons in the future.

In my opinion, stay with a TouchWiz rom and just use a launcher like Nova Launcher. I have stayed stock rooted just using Nova Launcher and I love it. I will be flashing to Team Sonic's FreeGS3 tonight though. It will be my first rom flash on my GS3.

Thanx - I've heard a few of you say this now. Why is this your recommendation and not just flashing CM10? To keep the camera apps and stuff?
right now id say there are many disadvantages of an AOSP rom versus a TW rom.
on AOSP (CM10, AOKP, SLIM,etc)
Data is slow, you cannot connect to 3g rev a8, it only does a6
Handoff if very slow, sometimes even causing loss of signal (need to reboot or toggle airplane mode)
Camera doesnt have the TW features nor the quality
SMS split isnt working (you must use a 3rd part sms app to get it to work)
MMS is hit or miss
Honestly the biggest problem is the data speeds and transition from 4g to 3g or wifi to 3g, makes it pretty hard to use.

On AOSP roms, you lose almost all of the useful features that require TouchWiz to use, such as direct calling by placing the phone up to your ear. That's the deal breaker for me, as that's the main way I place calls.
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda app-developers app
Also, you lose the hidden dialer menus.
Use jelly bean stock rom good as ever

Touchwiz had less bugs period.

You will lose the functions that makes this phone a best selling. By example Motions.
I used CM10 for a week, and to be honest i liked it, but it doesn't compare to TW in features.
Sent from my O=O
...so I was thinkin... What about a mix?
For example, the Motion stuff really is pretty helpful. Double-tapping, screen awake, etc etc. And also the framework sounds like it's necessary for quick GPS lock and data radio switching. Playing with my wife's phone, these things are quite apparent.
But my preference tells me that stock Android has it beat in uniformity on the dialer, messaging app, and feature set of the stock launcher.
Is it possible to flash/install some stock Android components over the top of the TouchWiz stuff and use something like ADW launcher? There's so much I don't like about TouchWiz, but the framework seems pretty foundational.

Why don't you just use 3rd party apps for those things? Like EX Dialer or Go Contacts for the dialer theming, and Go SMS for the messaging customization.
Also could probably pull the source code for your phone and write your own rom to fit your needs.

I'm sorry to troll but I recently bought a SG3 (sprint) 16gb, I rooted with CM10 Nightly. Then added 4.2.2 gapps found here in the site, I've been having issues with camera and and error that says Google Search has stopped working. With all that said I want to go back to the stock rom would you be able to direct me towards the right location.

Should be in the sticky for restores, if not just search for Lj7 restore. You might want to take a look at freegs3, its based on the stock rom (and it looks like it too, no weird themes) with some added features, and its really stable, I use it all the time.

While those may LOOK like the stock offerings, stability had always been an issue for me with those. And they sorely lack the polish and professionalism that the stock ones have come to earn. I am a QA professional by trade and those things drive me up the wall.

- The hex code for the themes color is #FF22dbd6
- To enable DD battery instead of stock battery go into TSM PARTS and in statusbar settings change the battery from 4.4 bat to 4.3 image battery.
- When flashing any of my themes if your already currently running a Sick Made theme then there is no need to wipe or flash on a clean install of the rom... just simply flash the theme! This only applies to themes that are on the same build of course.

OK just got back home... I will have screens and download link posted within 15 mins or so... my bad bout the delay
OK theme link posted... I am gonna post some information about the theme under post #2 like the hex color... and stuff to change in Tweaked Rom TSM Parts for instance change battery to 4.3 to get the themed DD battery. I hope everyone enjoys! Will be more than likely my last theme for the Note 3 for I am gonna be switching to the Note Edge here shortly... But who knows maybe drop something here and there?

Yeah... pretty much!! This theme is ridiculously sick... Dude, I'm trading my N3 to JUMP to an N4 tomorrow, and I'm still gonna dirty flash Tweaked with this theme to rock it until I re-stockify everything. A great "goodbye gift" for my current (hopefully prior as of tomorrow...) favorite phone I've ever owned. I'm just trying to wrap my mind around the hotness of those screens... not happening! Amazing work man!!

Your talking about main dialer bg? If so it's transparent but just a tad because I think it looked better more black and not as transparent as the framework bg is all.. but if there's people that would like to see it have more transparency I can whip it up

Yes I flashed 75%Trans mod.
[/COLOR]Hey SICKMADE - this theme is continually blowing my mind! Having flashed it pretty soon after it was posted, I still regularly notice small elements you've altered that make me pause and appreciate the level of detail in this theme! Also re: appreciation, thanks so much for sharing the color code in one of the OPs. I'm really big on "UI consistency", and the likelihood that I'd have been able to perfectly match that killer blue for a few elements is super low; it just looks so much better overall being able to get an exact match for a netspeed meter that I've got on the far left of the statusbar and particularly on some UCCW widgets I've made.
A couple questions: would flashing the VOLTE icon that @foreverloco made (the one that replaces the red & green arrows with just text, HD Voice be expected to cause any problems? I normally just do that after flashing any theme, but I read your OP as being pretty adamant about not "mixing" ILL with anything from other themes, so I just wanted to check if flashing something minor like that HD Voice .zip on top of your theme would have any horrific consequences, ya know, like altering all the #FF22dbd6 to #FF22dbd7... HELL NO!!
Second question: have you come across in fonts in @cbucz24's massive pack that can be installed with Tweaked that "compliment" this theme well? I've been going through them, and have some contenders.... I'm thinking that something similar but not quite as bold as the keyboard font would work well. My "go to" fav in that pack is Ultima Mod, but it doesn't really "fit" with ILL at all. Just wondering if there are any that you would you would recommend I check out?
Thanks again man, this is the first theme of yours that I've run and I'm super impressed :good:

Good lookin brother I appreciate the kind words.... cause of people like you is why I decided to start sharing my work in the first place... as far as foreverlocos data themed icon zip as long as it doesnt flash like say the whole systemui which I doubt it would but I dont even really know where exactly that icon is at I havent looked but I would assume its just a vrtheme in that case it wont hurt at all... about a certain font I personally always use SonySketch.. I been using that font for what seems like forever now. Everytime I try something new I always go back to Sony Sketch. Try it out if you havent before it looks really good!

Thanks buddy! I do recall that HD Voice zip definitely is a vrtheme, so that should be straight. It's about time for a fresh nandroid anyway, so I'll be good either way. Man, your theme played a big role in my decision to bail on my "solid, locked-down" plan to trade my Note 3 for a regular 4"... that was the very same day I learned about the super-impressive group of devs who had already upgraded / decided to go with the Edge... a day or two before @dwitherell made his 'official' announcement! I can't even tell ya how happy I am to have ended up holding on to my super-ILL Tweaked Out N3 for the time being! I really avoided some major regret there and my enjoyment of ILL was a major factor in my decision to bail on the N4 at the time... huge thanks bro!

New way to personalize phone: a WAW

Wallpapers have been around forever, in smartphone terms. There are two tribes to the species: Static and Live wallpapers. The static ones don't do much besides simply being aesthetically pleasing. Live Wallpapers on the other hand tend to be busy continuously running animation loop to entertain–or perhaps distract–the phone owner.
I felt that something was missing here with choices available, hence Why I developed this concept of a Wake-Animation wallpaper.
The idea in a nutshell is to have something greeting you everytime you unlock your phone–think of a dog eager to show 'I am your friend, here at your service! –yet won't distract with continuous animation loop.
To built my first WAW I used original art by Stephen Najarian, a talented illustrator working in the Fantasy genre.
The way the app works is: you would set it to both Lockscreen and Homescreen in Settings->Live Wallpapers. When the phone is Locked, you will see lockscreen image that may appear like a puzzle with some ambiguity to interpretation. Once the phone gets unlocked though, the wake animation starts playing, and the pieces to the puzzle fall in place, finally revealing an image from Najarian's series. This short story visually unfolds in under a second, while your Launcher dishes out the icons.
For illustration, here the Locksceen on the left shows fragment of a beast up-close, which may not be that obvious at a first glance.
As you unlock the phone and beast comes to life shooting lightnings all over, it becomes clear this is another one of Najarian dragons awakening.
How well it works in practice? I share a few screen-action videos I took with app prototype at wakeanimation.org, take a look at it.
Beta APK available now: GooglePlay Beta download link
Please share feedback/your experience.
Thanks!
I like it. How would it be implemented, though?

Very much like a regular Live Wallpaper; after installing the APK you go to Settings->Live Wallpapers and check both the Homescreen and Lockscreen options for it to work properly/
I guess I would have to release an alpha to address these questions, will have to clean up my code and setup something, hopefully in couple weeks.

You know oneplus's love wallpapers have been like this for a year and a half now. This is really not a new concept, but hasn't been out on a mass scale
My understanding is, what they have is: on Lockscreen they show some movement, then once unlocked the movement slows for the next 4-5 sec then stops. So the experience is a bit different, user experience.
Have you watched my video clips? really short ones, Do they help explain?

Yes, they are about the same. When you unlock the phone it plays the animation for 3 seconds then stops. Yours is more customizable though

A major thing driving this for me was the Art itself, the art of Stephen Najarian.
The way I see it, the app would have a rotation of several animations, all based on different pieces of the artist.
Would you say Najarian's art is a good material to pick for a project like this, or it's just me/my taste?
BTW on 3 sec animation length: if you got enough icons on your desktop, I'd say 60% of the grid and up, I found then it degrades the "Visual candy" effect significantly. So in my view, transitional animations need to be shorter for the art to shine.
One idea could be though, for Launcher devs to add an optional Delay parameter to their app Settings, so as to push the Icon painting down may be 300 msec or whatever folks might like. I tried reaching out to several popular Open Source Launcher devs about the idea, noone really replied.

Actually for me I prefer many icons on my desktop. A dark bg. And not live wallpapers or opening animations bc I'm a power user and really enjoy my battery life. But art is good and fun love it. But I just wanted to show you this is not a new concept. Props on expanding it for customization

Yeah I was showing the dev. Deleted vid takes up alot of space on my already full cloud storage
down-sample perhaps?
Apology for request: Would it be possible to temporarily "resurrect" it for a day or so? perhaps you can use another hoster, like G-Drive, Box, Imgur etc. Another thing is to down sample video first into much smaller file size. You can do that online, just Google "downsample video online" and get a few choices. Thx!

I don't need to millions of vid in YouTube
They call it dynamic wallpaper
Thanks man!
I had to play that couple times to figure what's going on here, but in a word what's missing there (compared to my approach) is Drama!
What I mean is, I am trying to show a little story (under a sec long) triggered at Unlock, while theirs is a very much ambient kind of visuals, which gracefully grinds down to a Static wallpaper. Just a different approach IMHO

APK available
News update: beta APK available on GooglePlay
Install is pretty straightforward; after completing, navigate to Settings->Live Wallpaper, it should show there as Najarian's Myth with an icon.
Choose it, and make sure to set it both to your Lock- and Home- screens. Then enjoy!

OnePlus bugs with media playback
Folks I appreciate everybody who tried and sent Google crash report, which shows where the problem occurs.
Unfortunately, after doing some research into it, it appears OnePlus uses heavily customized ROMs which got some bus. There are number of developer reports out there about apps breaking on OnePlus and Xiaomi's (another heavily customized ROM phone make) involving media applications.
One workaround I saw on SoF is to to disable NuPlayer in the phone's Developer Options–so that a ,more stable AwesomePlayer is used instead as a fallback:
see
https://stackoverflow.com/questions...er-on-samsung-devices-how-to-disable-programm
Appreciate if anyone tries it and shares with the forum.
Here is how to get to Dev Options if you need it:

This update available on GooglePlay addresses issue some people reported with FingerPrint unlock causing problems. Let me know if issues still persist
