Wifi tethering without root? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Rooting isn't an option because the usb port on the phone is broken. I've tried foxfi and it doesn't work, and I've tried elixir 2 widgets that let me turn on the sprint hotspot. No luck there either. Are there any other options?
Thanks

In some of the comments they mention an app called FoxFi. I have not tried it, but it seems to work without rooting your phone. Check it out and let us know the results.

Most recent I've heard would be what the previous poster mentioned... Foxfi apparently is a contender however if it matter at all, I understand you want the Wifi but in case you're a curious person you can try Bluetooth thru PdaNet, free on the market

Search clockworkmod tether. ill attach the apk.

If you do not have root and plan to wireless tether; You're out of luck. Many people are so skeptical when it comes to rooting. It usually safe. I always recommend do as much reading as you can so when you root your phone you have a good idea how to do it. As I was saying, you can always use the alternative, which is wire tether such as Easy Tether. In most cases they do not require root but will only work if their software is installed on the computer. If you really want to get creative. If you have an old laptop with WiFi built-in. Download the Easy Tether software on the computer and download the app from the market. Once it is paired and the internet works. Share the internet connection through the computer's WiFi. If you need help, just Google: "How to share wired internet through WiFi". I can guarantee you will 1000s of guides to choose from. Good Luck and hit that thank you button.

sorry I just realized that you root your USB port is broken. That is a common problem with the EVO LOL. I would recommend taking to a Sprint or an alternative repair shop to get that fix. Im sure there are guides that will show you how to fix it yourself with just some tools from RadioShack. Once again, Good Luck.

I'm rooted and whenever I install and try to run wifi tether it starts with errors. I've tried multiple versions and they all keep doing the same thing. Anyone have a fix or have any ideas?

I was getting the same errors on my rooted Evo 4g as well though, had to use the hacked sprint hotspot in order to wirelessly tether.
hmm, which root method did you use?? i used the 1 by zedomax, and my wifi tether works perfectly, no issues... just installed, and accepted SU permissions...

I started a thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1268090 because of this same issue. I'm assuming that is what led to the video on how to install the beta 6 version, but I'm still getting an error for wifi encryption, so for now i am turning on the access-control and not Having any more errors. I originally thought it was an compatibility issue with an app, but it looks to me it has more to do with the root method. lets give them time, it'll only get better.
Huh, guess I'm just failing tonight. I've tried every apk posted in the root thread and i can find. Can't get any tethering connections going. the only difference between me and the video is I don't have the hotspot message in my notification drop down. My root works fine and my laptop sees the ad hoc network (i change the name and the new network ssid comes up).

Update your super user and give it a try.
I'm starting with errors and the error is actually encryption. If I start without encryption I can tether just fine - Only when I start with encryption enabled does it kick out any issues.
Any ideas?
You might want to file a bug report with the project. I'm sure that we are missing something in the kernel but don't know what or how to find out....
Is anyone able to get 4G speeds while tethering? It seems to be really slow on a Windows 7 notebook I've tried with. Getting around 0.28 mbps down and 0.79 mbps up. Speedtest on the phone gets 10/1.5. I'm right by a tower. Haven't tried with my iMac which is located in an area with weak 4G coverage that cuts in and out.
3G is fine by the way when it's good. Getting 1.5/0.5 or faster.
any update
Im having the EXACT same problem. Im curious if you or anyone else has got this fixed yet?

Back to the original post and the question asked.
I'm running Juggernaut as well. Is there a way to get free wifi tethering? Furthermore, data speeds are terrible through tether, but decent on the phone. That is, I can download a 385mb file from Dropbox in about 10 minutes or less (I didn't waste my data by testing the download of the whole file). However, tethered to my laptop, I cannot even get the main Google web page to load reliably, much less download a file.
Another example. Netflix plays fine on the phone, impossible with a tethered laptop.
Any suggestions? Yes, I've done my searching. I've seen others complaining of the same problem, but no clear solutions. Only possible solution is to use TB to uninstall and re-install Tether Manager (a solution posted for Zombie, BTW, not Juggernaut). However, under Juggernaut I don't see Tether Manager listed under TB in order to uninstall and re-install.
Hope this makes sense. Any help is appreciated.

Okay, I kept looking and found a solution that appears to be working. I downloaded Open Garden Wifi Tether. That fixed the connection and bandwidth problems. Streaming HD Netflix on tethered laptop without a hitch, but I still get these annoying pauses and delays before data transfer starts. After as much as a 1-2 minute delay the video stream begins buffering and the video plays.
I think that is a t-mobile data thing, not a 4g or GS2 problem.
I also noticed that Speedtest routes to a server in D.C. and I'm in Jacksonville, FL. I manually reset to servers here in Jacksonville, but that resulted in abysmal scores.
Ah well, the quest continues. Next thing to sort out is to find someway to make calls without using minutes (Skype? Google Voice?).
Hope this helps someone else. Also, I'm open to any helpful input.

Solved. I think
A tmo Rep told me that it would be free if I was using barnacle. My speeds are great honeslty. You can also go through USB or blutletooth but this seems gayest with barnacle. Barnacle is free also
You can also get no throttle if you replace some things using root explorer but there are whole threads for that

[Q] Any low cost or free 4G Tethering Options?

Ever since the last time I installed a rooted ROM (stock Sense ICS edit: gingerbread), neither Wifi Tether nor Wireless Tether will work with my laptop. The apps launch and seem to run ok, but a few minutes after my laptop connects, it then disconnects! After that it wont connect anymore unless I close either tethering app and re-start them.
I have been using PDA Net, which is fine, but the free version won't connect to secure sites. Before I give up and pay for the full version, I thought I'd check and see if there are any other option available.
My requirements are:
Works with 4G
Works with secure sites.
I would prefer a wireless solution so I can use it with my (cough) iPad as well, but that would be a luxury.
I have not confirmed that my wireless issue is due to either app. Wifi Tether used to work with my previous ROM (also a stock Sprint rooted ROM). I flashed to an updated ROM because I could not get my Bluetooth working with the last one. Now Bluetooth works, but I've lost the ability to use Wireless tethering!
I'm kind of afraid to flash to a ROM with unlocked Sprint wireless tether because I don't want something else to break!
Wireless tether 2.0.7 works on pretty much anything. Does not work on evo 3d

Sorry, I meant Gingerbread.
I'm on 2.3 Android, and using Wireless tether 2.07, And she ain't working for me. That is why I'm looking for another tethering method.
Guess I'll just have to re-flash and take my chances with breaking bluetooth again. I wanted to avoid that cause when I was trying to fix my Bluetooth before, nobody here was able to help. I had to reflash then too.

I'll go ahead and link you to a thread will appropriately address this one. Please read through the entire thread.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1471025
Well, I'm more puzzled than ever now.
My question asks about the existence of wireless tethering apps OTHER than WiFi Tether and Wireless Tether, specifically apps that are not restricted to non secure sites.
I spent almost a full hour searching before I posted, but I did not mention that in my question as I did not think it was pertinent.
I had already looked at the sticky about wireless tethering, but that thread discusses wireless tethering SPEED issues - not my issue. Again, my issue is loosing the connection between my phone and client (originally my laptop, but since confirmed with my iPad) when using either of the two mentioned wireless apps.
As long as the tether stays connected, I have no problem with 4G speed. But I only remain connected for two or three minutes.
And the thread Concordium linked to seems to be about bashing the original poster of that thread, so no help there either. Unless I missed something.
Wireless tether for root connects to anysite you want I use it everyday on 2 devices works just fine connecting to anything I need

Thanks. I mentioned in my original post that both Wireless Tether and Wifi Tether are not working on my EVO.
Initially they do start and connect, but within 2 to 3 minutes they both stop tethering. I'm starting to wonder if some other app may be interfering.
Does anybody know for sure if my phone's WiFi should be running or not? Sometimes I get that "What the hell..." message.
I reread your original post and it looks like you answered your own question in your original post. It DID work until you flashed to another ROM. So common sense would suggest that it is some kind of issue with the ROM or the way it is setup. Perhaps you should take a look at that and use that in your query. If you don't want to flash something else then that's cool. But you're not going to fix your problem until you fool around with it.
Well, yes, but Like I said above, sometimes I get that "What the hell? Your phone takes over the WiFi..."
I don't know if you are familiar with that. It suggests to me that something is hijacking my WiFi radio.
Maybe I need to learn how to ask better questions.

Tether/Hotspot workarounds (AT&T)

Enabling Hotspot on ATT phones used to be as easy as freezing tether manager via Titanium Backup.
It seems with the GS3 on stock ICS this isn't enough...
I've also tried Wifi Tether Manager but still the sharing evades me.
A few threads mention the issue but I'd like to condense the issue to one place.
Any success stories or proven processes?
Preferred solutions found & tested
As the originator of this question, I hate having to read through oodles of pages of diversions just to find if a suitable answer was found.
So I reserved the first reply so I could summarize developments and solutions in this post. Here are the worthy options found so far.

FoxFi seems to have been the solution for me (AT&T customer running a GS3). I was able to create a Wifi Hotspot and connect my laptop plus another Android phone, then surf the net on all 3 devices at the same time! I didn't clock the speed but it seemed to be at least a decent broadband response.
FoxFi doesn't require any significant tweaking, like Wifi Tether does.
I had a rather at length discussion today with advanced tech support at Samsung. He told me AT&T requested data traffic to be manipulated so tethering wasn't possible. He was trying to assure me it was VERIZON who encrypted the bootloader, and he used AT&T as the example of what their customers asked for from them.
How true it is, is another issue all together.
why would you reserve a post in a "question" thread?
anyways, i hate "wifi" tethering since the phone gets extremely hot. and it drains the battery quickly and connection isn't as solid. so this is why i prefer a "wired" tether. i just carry my usb wire around with me and i plug it into my computer when i need to tether. I downloaded "Tether" app from www.clockworkmod.com which let's you tether using a wired connection. it works completely fine for me. I even have Tasker set up to when I plug my phone into my PC, my phone automatically opens the Tether app and loads it waiting for me to "accept". if i don't wanna tether, i simply hit "Home" or "Back". simple as that.
Benefits to wired tether are:
phone doesn't get hot
battery doesn't die. in fact, it charges the phone
connection is solid
secured connection
only user using it

I'm assuming you're using an AT&T GSIII? If so, how did you manage to get FoxFi on it? Apparently AT&T is now blocking it from the Play Store along with Sprint. I can't install it from the web, either...my devices are grayed out and it says it's not available on my carrier.
I'd rather not root my GSIII yet and FoxFi sounds like just the ticket.

Yes, at&t ... Not sure what to tell you, it installed fine for me and when I login via the web Play Store, it says it's compatible with all my devices.
Maybe the apk is available somewhere. Since at&t didn't block unknown sources, you should be able to install it.
So is there a safe way to tether natively (wired or wireless)? May it be loading another rom (AOKP or AOSP). I have no problem using a vpn on the pc side.
If I use foxfi or another workaround from the stock touchwiz will AT&T be able to track my tethering and shut down my unlimited plan? It would be useful to use tethering but I don't want to risk them finding it. If I root and use another method will they be able to find out?

I also figured out how to get FoxFi back in the market.
First remove your SIM Card and reboot. Connct over WiFi only.
Go to application settings and Clear Data from both "Google Framework Services" and "Play Store"
Reboot
Go back to the Play Store and you should see FoxFi now. If for some reason you get a cannot connect message in the Play store, go back and clear your data for the Play store again and try again.
AT&T must have just blocked FoxFi from the Play Store within the last day... I got it from the Play Store on Friday 7/13.
Is it permissible to post the .apk here?

Anyone know which program, since the JB 4.1.1 updated (AT&T SGH-I747) will allow tethering preferably both wifi and usb. I tried this one and can't get it to work with the Samsung S3 profile selected or the Galaxy Nexus GSM profile selected.

Been searching for an hour now. Tried two other apps. Neither worked. (Neither said root was necessary). Not willing to pay for Foxfi just to see it not work. Elixir 2 people have used but I think this is all pre Jelly Bean, at least for the GSM (AT&T) version of this phone.
Seems maybe we have to wait. All the apps, videos, posts out there seem to be for ICS. Guess this is the downfall when you update within 24 hours of the update being released. Need to let the developers catch up.
I can confirm pdanet works....havent tried foxfi but im sure it does as well considering how similar they work...
Galaxy S III I747
Prior to update I was using FoxFi and it looks like it still works with Jelly Bean but I'm unable to get the Proxy Add-On to work since Jelly Bean.
Do you think I'll get caught tethering if I run FoxFi without the Add-On or does the Add-On only provide a false sense of security and is really not making a difference?
If it makes a difference, I'm on one of the old 2GB plans, not the new shared plans, but not unlimited either. Also, I'm stock, not rooted.
Finally, if you don't think this works, any suggestions that would work in this situation?
Thanks!

I was on the old 5GB plan (the one that allowed tethering) and switched to the new shared plan (since I don't do that much data but do call a lot and wanted the unlimited calling (saves me over a hundred bucks a month)) and on these plans they do allow tethering. From what I understand, you will need to have a rooted phone if you want to tether under any other (older) plan..

I guess we should be specific that we are looking for apps that not only work on JB 4.1.1 but also don't require a tethering or shared data plan. So people say an apps works but fail to point out it's because their carrier is okaying the app since they have a qualifying plan. So pdanet works on JB 4.1.1 SGH-I747 without an AT&T tethering or shared data plan?

So people say an apps works but fail to point out it's because their carrier is okaying the app since they have a qualifying plan. So pdanet works on JB 4.1.1 SGH-I747 without an AT&T tethering or shared data plan?

No...you should have said "I have no clue what im doing so can you please explain every single detail to me?". WTF does a tethering plan have to do with you being able to tether or not if youre rooted? You need to disable to tethering provision via TB!

Not everyone on here has been on an Android phone and screwing with it all their lives. For example, what the heck is "TB" ? Don't assume everyone has as much experience as you, just because they are a participant on XDA. And I should also add on that requirement, NO CUSTOM ROM.
So an appropriate answer might be the following:
If you are on JB 4.1.1 and want to tether without a tethering plan from your carrier, and you are on the STOCK ROM. You need to do this, this, this and this. Or just post a frickin link to someone who DID take the time to explain it for the rest of us. Does your solution require rooting, or doesn't it. STATE IT. So future people when they search the forums, they don't find a bunch of misleading, dead-end solutions and/or bickering.
I just came from iPhone and I was a jailbreaker. I'm loving the S3 and Jelly Bean. But on the iPhone, I'd jailbreak (equivalent of rooting on Android), install MyWiFi, and DONE and DONE. It seems this was how it was on ICS with this phone. Now on JB, not so simple. There's dozens of posts on several threads on several forums around the Internet of people no longer getting their tethering app to work since JB upgrade. These are both rooted and non-rooted, but they are all STOCK JB ROMs.
So please, tell us the trick to get a stock JB 4.1.1 ROM SGH-I747 AT&T to tether without the plan. We are all ears!

Not sure as I've been to busy with my real life outside of XDA to spend hours reading and reading posts.
Bottom line, if there was an app you can just download and install for ICS before that worked, isn't it just a matter of time until someone publishes an app on Google Play (may require rooting, big deal) that does the same without a bunch of workarounds and crap.
Look one post above yours
Install that zip file via CWM(clockworkmodrecovery)....then download TITANIUM BACKUP (TB...you need the pro version...you can download lucky patcher for that) and go in and freeze the tethering provision app. This will allow you to tether without your carrier knowing...kindof...
P.S. ICS was the same protocol. You have to freeze the tethering provision...

Thank you. I've got Titanium Backup installed now. So should I just use the built-in AT&T tethering app now or is it 'safer' to use something else?
Found it.
Still no love. CW Recovery and Team Epic Root Installed. TB Pro installed. Tethering Provisioning Uninstalled.
Tried to Tethering Apps on Google Play, neither work. "Free USB Tethering App" and "Wifi Tethering for Root" (tried Auto and Samsung S3 profiles). No Dice. Thought there was an native AT&T app but may have uninstalled it with TB when cleaning out bloatware.
SGH-I747 AT&T
Okay, duh, I found the Tether toggle in Advanced Settings. I also found a couple tether apps that don't require root that actually came up on the network, but I get 'Limited' connectivity indication in Windows with no Internet access.
Now get this, whenever I go into Settings > Advanced > Tether if I toggle it on or off or toggle USB sharing on, I get the message "Settings application has stopped working" Some of the tethering apps also "stop working" when I try to run them even though I see the blue tether notification icon in the status bar and I can see the SSID on the network and connect, but it is as if the phones ability to bridge the wifi hotspot it is providing to the 4G Internet connection is broke.
****. Do I need to load Kies and to a stock firmware restore, or is that not even possible not that I have CW recovery installed. I really really didn't want to get into this Android tweaking Hell and now I'm there. Another wasted frickin weekend! Maybe I'll just go back to iPhone. Hopefully the iOS 6 jailbreak is out now (untethered).
Kind of ticked up about being lead down the road that indicated just freezing the tethering provisioning was the solution to all my woes. Maybe it worked for some (are you on JB 4.1.1 with AT&T SGH-I747???) but not me. After a couple more hours of searching and searching, including all sorts of YouTube videos showing using FoxFi, Wifi Tether for Root, etc, and then a lot of recent comments about it nor working. Anyways.....
Soultion is a newer hacked version of Wifi Tether for Rooted user that is not on the Play Store and the apk has to be downloaded directly. Current version is here:

What a pain in the ass it took to finally find this. Guess that's the price you pay when you are brand new to Android and an OS update comes out two weeks after you got your phone and you install it the day it comes out. Sigh.
Ugh. Got too excited too quick. You can't toggle Wifi back on after shutting down tethering without restarting phone! Guess it's going to be a few more days until some good developers come out with a simple one-app solution without issues. It was WAY easier to get free tethering on the jailbroken iPhone that this. I'm shocked this is so hard right now on Android JB 4.1.1. But I have to remember the OS update just came out.
