Camera colours permanently posterized - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi there Gurus !
I'm hoping you guys can help...
I've recently bought a phone which was unlocked when I got it (Android Revolution HD 7.0.2 by Mike1986)
The photo below shows the camera on my old HTC Desire HD on the left and the new one on the right. Admittedly, I could have focused both cameras on the subject better, but that's not really the issue. As you can see, the colours on the new phone look posterized.
I've made sure to set the camera back to it's default settings and of course there were no effects being added to the image.
I've also tried fiddling with all the settings (Exposure / Contrast / Satruration / Sharpness / White Balance etc. etc.) but every setting still produces these dodgy colours around everything.
It's probably worth mentioning that I've also tried the [Desire HD Camera guide] on this site and the obvious cleaning of the lens !
I'm really hoping you guys can suggest something that will get this camera working. Because the phone is awesome in all other respects !
Edit: Apparently I'm not allowed to post outside links in my message, so you should find the picture as an attachment...
All help appreciated !!
Thanks,
Wotney

...This doesn't bode well !

Let's see.
New phone, rooted, running custom rom, Right?
Does the issue happen on stock? Didn't check?
Does it happen if you full wipe and install again? Does it happen on another rom?
Is it normal? Two different dhd's can have different componenets.
No idea what you mean by posterized.
Bottom line is, if you've tried the above suggestions, it's a new phone, and if it's a hardware issue, use your warranty. The dhd has a two year warranty in most countries if not all.

Hey - thanks very much for the reply...
It's a new phone to me, not brand new. Although I don't think it's been used properly before. Looks like someone got an upgrade and sold it to one of these companies that then sells it on for them.
I bought it from eBay and the rom was already on there when I got it.
I'm hoping you can see the attached thumbnails at the bottom of my first post - it shows me holding another Desire HD next to the new one. If you look at the image difference - you'll see what I mean by posterized.
I haven't done a full wipe and start again yet, because if I can't get it fixed - I need to return it to the seller.
Whilst I'm prepared to do that - I'd rather get it working !
If there's no other ideas from people, it looks like that is what I'll have to do

Try flashing another rom. Go for any gb rom. If you don't know how to full wipe and swap roms let me know.
Make a backup of that rom before, so that if you still have the issue, you just restore the backup and return it. As long as you don't have all your personal info in the phone.
Sent from a dream.

Teichopsia, Once again - thanks for getting back to me.
I'm going to check with the person I got it from that they'll still accept a return of the phone if I go ahead and try that.
I'll let you know how I get on.
Thanks buddy.

TP2 Is Amazingly Slow..

i just got my touch pro 2, it was used, but it was still new
it still even has the original plastic on the screen.
ever since ive had the phone though, everything on it is really really slow.
opening up a text, sending a text, going back to the home screen, opening up opera, clicking on the notification tab. EVERYTHING is really slow, or has some kind of lag to it. Why is this happening? What can i do to fix it?
This is really bothering me, and im about to trade for another phone because i cant take it. It takes me 5 minutes to send a text message, after i hit the send button.
ANY help is appreciated, thanks!!
First thing you want to check is which ROM is running on the device. Is it stock or a cooked ROM. Which version TP2 do you have? is there a carrier logo on it? The more information you can provide about the hardware/software on the device the better we can help you.
its the stock ROM. Original T-Mobile branded version. Its pretty much new out of the box it seems.
Since you just got it, and someone may have been using it before. i would suggest hard reset first off to remove any junk the previous user may have installed.
ok thats sounds like a good idea, how would i go about it?
(sorry for some of the questions i have been / will be asking, i just came from android to WinMo, so im completely lost)
1. While the HTC Touch Pro 2 is off, press and hold Talk/Send, End and Power until you see a message on the screen about deleting all data.
2. Release the buttons after the message appears.
3. Press the Volume Up button.
once you are done with that I would recommend disabling push internet and also the Dynamic Resource Proxy...

The T-mobile stock ROMs do not have push pages and as such I do not believe it makes use of the Dynamic Proxy.
I came from an Android device (briefly, in between my Wizard to Rhodium). The screen itself is different. This may be part of the lag you are experiencing. I actually prefer the WinMo platform over the Droid one, as it feels more responsive and stable to me. My friends however, who have the the G3 or iPhone hate my Rhodium...so again, I suspect that if, after hard booting your device, it still feels laggy, it may be the differences in how the screen responds versus a Droid screen. The Devs here could explain it in much better techie terms than I.
There is a thread here pushing for a Droid port over to the Rhodium, and I sit here scratching my head asking why. I truly believe that much of it is perception, mine being that Android just isn't for me. You may consider checking out that thread and seeing if the port over is any closer to happening.
In the meantime, I have heard that the Energy roms are quite stable and fast, so you may consider flashing one and seeing if maybe your response issues are handled. Be sure to read up on unlocking/flashing your device first so you don't brick it.
I'm sorry I'm not much help here. I do think though that perhaps some of the issue may be the screen...I could be way off base here too, though.
I am testing out the Dymanic Resource Proxy hack to see if it makes any difference to me. Will let you know what i find, so far idling at about 55%
update:
well, i went ahead and did a system restore, it was faster, but still not to my liking, so iwent ahead and flashed a ROM to make one final test. i went ahead a flashed energy ROM, and i have to say, i very much enjoy it now. ALOT faster, much smoother transition between applications, accelrometer works alot better, an overall greatly improved experience.
thanks to everyone that helped me!
one last question though, after flashing the ROM, my ALT key doesn't seem to work. Any fix? i would do a search, but im already typing a response, so i thought i would go ahead and include it here.

SOLVED! - Camera not working, tried several roms with no joy

First of all my appologies if this is in the wrong section...... As I don't have enough posts I can't ask the Dev's directly or even post in their threads....
I have a rooted and S-off unbranded htc desire. I flashed the LeeDroid HD port and everything was cool. Since then Ive gone on to Revolution 3D v1.5 again no problems at all.
The issue is with the camera, it wont work at all. this happened when i flashed Revolution v3 xmas edition. To be fair to Tamirda he's got a link labelled "camera fix" i flashed this and still no camera
Thinking this has got something to do with the kernel (as that was the only difference I could see after installing the camera fix) I've tried various other kernels but still no joy.
Since then I have tried re-flashing ALL of the Revolution roms (completing a full wipe incl sd/ext, dalvik etc) all work great but I still have no camera, Ive flashed RCMixS v2.0, still no camera and I've just this minute completed a FULL wipe and Nandroid restore that I created on the 26/12/2011, the day after flashing for the first time (LeeDroid HD port) when all was good, but STILL no camera
Any help or suggestions or even just a nod in the right direction would be MASSIVELY apreiciated as Ive been trying to solve this now for a few weeks
I've now re-flashed RCMixS v2.0 and I still cant use the camera.......
Heres all my phones current info:
Android version: 2.3.3
HTC sense version: 2.1
Baseband version: 32.49.00.32U_5.11.05.27
Kernel version: 2.6.35.10-g308ba26 [v05]-snq-is-still#1
Build number: RCMix S v2.0 A2SD+ Bravo HBoot
Software number: 2.36.405.8
Browser version: WebKit/533.1
Revolutionary
BRAVO PVT3 SHIP S-OFF
HBOOT-6.93.1002
MI CROP-051d
RADIO-5.11.05.27
ClockworkMod recovery v5.0.2.0
Thanks again in advance, Tom.
Just to clarify.... when the camera/camcorder icons are pressed, sometimes the screen blacks out and the only response you get is by pressing the 'home' key exiting the application while other times the white camera logo comes onto the center of the screen but instantly disaperes and closes the app.
Ive also tried non htc camera apps purchesed from the market like 'pro capture' this took ONE photo and never worked again, when you try to use it it simply says 'cannot access camera'. I also have tried all other ways to access the camera like attach photo to mms and choosing camera instead of gallery and it still doesnt work.....
Don't know the answer, sorry
Please can you make the thread title more specific? "no camera since xxxxx"
Sent from my HTC Desire using Tapatalk
Hi, thanks for the 'heads up' .. Ive changed the title to better suit the thread. I'm sure I'm over looking something, just can't think of anything else to try....
This is odd. To me, this seems to be some sort of a hardware issue. If i were you, i'd flash a stock 2.2 RUU and see if that fixes the camera issue. If it doesn't, then i'm afraid it's off to a repair center for you, my friend.
Three things:
- Maybe the recovery didn't properly wipe the partitions (happens sometimes) and some system files got fubared. Try wiping each partition 2-3 times before installing ROM/back-up and see if that fixes it;
- Open the back cover and GENTLY nudge the camera's "lens" with a cotton swab (the ones used for cleaning your ears). Maybe it's stuck (it should "float" - for focusing reasons) and the camera is reporting some sort of an error because of that and refuses to work;
- Please post a dmesg for the camera, if possible.
Mind you, you're not the only one with this issue. Check out this thread.
Ok cool, thankyou that gives me something to work with
Yeah Ive read some posts where people are saying that roms which use sense hybrids can cause this issue but none that Ive read seem to go much further than that. Tbh Im hoping it is jus a case of a bad wipe/install thats been made worse by several re flash / full wipe attempts....... Fingers crossed eh!
Will check out the link before I go any further and will post what happens next.
Thanks again, Tom
Ok, not great news but I know whats wrong with it....... Big thanks to TVTV for the link as thats where I found the answer.
Its a hardware problem having being dropped on its face a couple of times (DOH!) the floating lense doesnt float any more causing the ap to force close or sometimes stay on black screen. Gently tapping on the lense brought it back to life, briefly, but that'll be because its damaged and not software....... so yeah off to the shops I go
Thanks again TVTV
You're welcome!
Just a quick note...
Anybody who has this issue, with the same symptoms, can temporarily get there camera working again.
Take the battery cover off and have a look at the camera lense, you will see that there is a small , square piece of glass sitting on a slightly larger metal square frame. You need to GENTLY ease that metal frame away from the phone. On my handset the frame is joined at the top right corner, I used this join to hook the corner of my thumb nail under and lift it up by a FRACTION OF A MILIMETER MAX!
A good way to see if this is working is to start by pressing the camera icon untill it blacks out the screen, if you get somebody to watch the screen, or use a mirror, you will see the screen come back to life showing you all the on screen camera options and the image of what ever the camera is looking at as you GENTLY and ONLY SLIGHTLY pry the frame away from the phone.
It took me a night of fiddling with it using this method and so far I've been able to use my camera without faults..... Good job really as for now this has saved me a trip to the HTC service center, with no warranty
Before you try this though you MUST be incredibly carefull whilst moving this frame that holds the lense. You must NOT attempt to do this by touching the lense itself (small square shapped piece of glass) as this will more than likely break it, then its off to HTC which will cost a fortune if like me you've allready voided your warranty so BE CAREFULL!!
Hope this helps
Solved here also
Hi everybody,
I know this is old discussion, but I just wanted to confirm that I had a same problem with camera and flashlight not working, and with a half of hour dismantling I realized it was problem with the cable connection.
Gentle push, and everything is fine again!
Thanks for advice!
Hold the off button then press reset it worked on my HTC desire

Original JB 4.1 and HOX green pictures?

Hey all,
i have a little problem since the world wide update for 4.1 JB - when i take pictures the flash causes the picture to become green! i know its a problem with Custom roms but mine is an original update from the server. the pictures looks like it was taken at the Matrix..haha
well its nice for effects but for real its annoying...how do i get rid of it??
BTW uploaded a pic when i tried to snap shot the cover for a friend of mine
thank you!
Another one confirming same problem as i have, and i have seen people with HOX+ also having this.
Problem seemse to be KERNEL related. ICS works great on my phone with flash but when i load any version of JB Sense i get greenish images like yours.
This is a REAL PROBLEM but apperantly no-one is noticing it besides me and some isolated users. Either people dont notice ( how can you not?) or they dont use flash that often.
I realy hope the .27 build fixes this. If i get official JB and this problem persists i realy hope HTC gets around fixing this.
Btw. this seems to be a problem with handsets all the time, small problems but still something in particular HTC have a issue with.
I can confirm this is NOT a HARDWARE issue, changing kernels fixes it so it has to do with post processing - a B/W image looks just right but with the green boosted up way to much.
Try change sarturation to max/min aswell as iso 100/800.
tnx for your answer!
its obviously not HARDWARE problem, because the regular pics goes perfect!
i tried it all - non worked its still the same...
i guess ill be waiting for a new update to come or maybe go rogue and install an unofficial ROM...
the same Something with software.
thats not fun \=
well i have posted a new question for help on HTC main Facebook page, and showed them this thread i hope we all get final answers for that itchy bug :cyclops:
Same problem
I have the same problem with stock JB...
It's software and to do with the flash bleeding, on SLR you get a florescent filter but try this.
Go take picture again this time press the cog and go to white balance, change that from auto to florescent.
Let me know if that works, I can't get mine to do it to test.

M8 Camera Improvements

Hi Everybody,
Finally i got this wonderful phone, i've always been a supporter of htc since one X.
I read about the ultrapixel resolution and so on but, i read that there was a modified apk
that improves the camera on M8. I think the user was Jishnu that make the apk, than i discovered
that this user is banned form xda for some violation or something, i found him on G+ and i download
some file, also M9 camera, and flashed it, the phone starts but entered the boot loop, so i erase everything
and installed a custom rom, the android revolution hd 53.1, i've already used this rom and i've always been happy with it.
Now i'm testing it and maybe i've some problem with battery drain but my question is another, can someone of you tell
me where i can get a right apk to improve the camera? I saw some picture taken with that mod and the improvements were
awesome! I know i won't get pictures like my last 13Mpx camera but at least i want some better details, colors and so on!
Please help me! Lead me to the right way to get the best from my phone! Thanx!
PS I was almost convinced to move to M9, but i have this phone just since one month and i read the also the M9 camera is not so good,
so i'll wait for M10 maybe htc will finally put a good camera on that phone....

Camera distortion and brightness problem

Hi everyone, I recently bought a new camera module for the Z1C to replace my old one which had dark spots all over it, scratched lense etc. However, with the new camera (supposedly an original sony part), I experience a strange brightness and distortion problem, with the former one being rather obvious from the attached pictures. Note the large brightness artifact on the right side of the picture (inverted L shape).
I had sent the module back to the camera supplier, they tested it on their Z1C and found no problems whatsoever, telling me it was a (supposedly well known) software bug in my phone. Unfortunately, I was unable to find any occurence of other users reporting this particular problem. Maybe you can help me out?
I have an unlocked bootloader, currently running on the most recent DstrikersZ1 Mod (Android 5.1.1), but have also tried wiping everything and going back to the latest Sony Stock without getting rid of the problem. Could still be an incompatibility issue in terms of camera module hardware revisions? Interestingly, the problem does not occur in CM or AOSP firmwares, suggesting indeed a Sony-related software issue. Still, I find it hard to believe that this cannot be fixed while remaining on Sony-based firmwares. I have tried to flash every single Camera Mod available (Z5 camera, Cyberian, and many more) plus trying many alternative Camera softwares from the Google Play store without any success.
Thank you all very much!

I can see why you're bewildered. Very strange... I would initially think hw for sure, and someone sold you a bad part, but to hear that it goes away on custom ROMs is very confusing. Anyway, personally, I think I would probably send it back and get a refund, and try a different one. Whatever the problem is, that seems like the simplest first thing to try.

Thank you for your quick feedback and sympathy! Unfortunately, they refused to give me a refund based on the fact that they could not reproduce it on their Z1C test device. I had sent them my item and requested a refund/replacement, but they (supposedly) tested my module in detail and even sent me some pictures taken with their Z1C as proof. So now they just delivered the same camera module back to me and I'm kind of stuck with it.
Not sure why they cannot see it, given that it happens for me even on a clean Sony stock firmware. In theory, the only remaining difference between their phone and mine (HW revisions aside) would be my unlocked bootloader and with it the deleted TA partition and DRM for Bravia engine. I still have a TA backup somewhere but I'm not exactly willing to relock my bootloader and to loose TWRP. On a sidenote, the EXRxTHS functional DRM "restoration" did not help with my specific problem.
As you said, the mystery really lies in why the problem is not visibile on custom ROMs. I'd love to get a glimpse on the RAW image data from the camera because I believe that an error in post-processing causes the problem on the Sony ROM. But as far as I could see from searching, there is still no way of getting RAW image data when using a Sony firmware on Z1C, right?
