I think what he's saying is to never buy anything besides a Nexus
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2

I agree with this. The only problem the nexus wasn't easy to get in the us. Once it is its up to the consumer. To choose hardwear or soft wear
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2

While your slide is commendable it isn't entirely true. The only variants of the GN to be updated are the yakju and takju. There are many more variants running 4.0.4 and in the case of Canada's yakjuux variant 4.0.2 and lower. Until there are images or Ota available to upgrade those regional versions my opinion is that the nexus devices themselves are fragmented. I'm not even mentioning the toro models whom are still waiting. At least we have the option though to upgrade to jb easily on our own.

Apple obviously sees android as competition, Google dosent. Showing up another competitor at you'd conference? Nice advertisement apple. #obviouslyscared
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2

The whole argument about fragmentation revolves around updates. However, if you get a low end Android, the chances are that you don't care about having the latest version of Android. That's one of the key selling points of Android - there's a low end option for those with less desire to keep up with the Jones'.
If you get a high end phone, then it's a completely different story. i(couldcareless)OS typically gets one update a year. I believe the Galaxy Nexus had seen several updates already.
Some may claim that they are just bug fixes, but every update I've seen has had value added changes also...
When you add to that the fact that a number of iOS updates have actually slowed down older versions of the fruit phone, I can't help but think they have a weak argument...

Apple has the same weakness as other manufacturers in that their main source of profits come from people buying new devices. This gives them a strong incentive to withhold features from older devices. We are already seeing this in action in the iPhone 4 which did not get Siri and is not getting turn-by-turn navigation. The original iPad was discontinued in March of 2011. The last update it got was October of 2011. So some owners of the iPad got as little as 7 months of support.
Google, otoh, makes money from online advertising, so they don't care if you buy a new phone or not, as long as you are online. Unlike iPhone 4 owners, Nexus S owners got the full Jelly Bean upgrade.
Apple fans love to throw the "f" word around and brag about their precious iDevice. They don't realize they are living in a glass house.

This is beyond stupid. Fragmentation effects Nexus devices too... look no further than the embarrassingly slow adoption of Holo by apps in the market.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus

No one it's perfect....just look at windows phone, some guys bought a overpriced nokia lumia with 2010 hardware and they will be stuck on windows phone 7.x .
Most android devices are still with gingerbread because they cant run ics with low level hardware, some because the manufacter sucks....not google, they always deliver speedy updates.
Sent from my Transformer TF101G using xda premium

Of course Apple can have the majority of their devices on the latest OS - strip out the significant new features that you don't want older devices to have and push out the update to those devices. Pickup an iPhone 4s running iOS 5 and you'll have certain features and functionality. Pickup an iPhone 4 running "the same" OS, and you'll have less features and functionality. Pickup an iPhone... THAT'S FRAGMENTATION.

So, someone forced you to buy your current device, and now you're "stuck" with it?

i will never leave my nexus!!! i considered the gs3 and the x, but then i decided id rather just wait for the next nexus... hopefully this year!

Tell any app developer that fragmentation is a choice, and they are likely to stomp your face into a mud puddle.

Wow, even Apple's pie graphs have a metallic texture to them..

I personally think OP is right. If you don't like fragmentation cm go with Nexus. Even the old Nexus S got the update... of course, you won't get the best of both hardware and software, but let's be honest, Apple hardware is ****ing lousy too... I mean come on! 800mhz processor? Small 3.5 inch screen? It's pathetic compared to galaxy nexus. Yes, the new iPhone probably will be better than galaxy nexus, but Google will probably come up with something much better later on!

...it doesn't. Nexus devices are notorious for being one of the least common devices in a lineup of its peers.

+1 I wanted Sony or HTC to make it, but now I'm leaning towards Motorola. They have the best package all around, especially with Google picking everything. Which hopefully means no pen tile, definitely no locked boot loader, bigger battery, best radio, and nice beautiful design and durability.

[Q] The next Galaxy Nexus?

I know Gnex just got update with jelly bean but does anyone know when Galaxy Nexus 2 is comiing out? will it prob be next year??
just asking cause i can't find any rumors regarding it...
I doubt very highly that the next iteration of the Nexus phone will be called the Galaxy Nexus 2. Historically, there's not been much precedent for that, unless you count the G1 and G2, but that was before the Nexus moniker. Nothing was announced about it at Google I/O, so I would suspect the next Nexus phone is a long way off.

On the other hand, they just announced a tegra 3 tablet and the gnex is the better part of a year old. I wouldn't be surprised if they came out with a quadcore phone toward the end of the year.

I think real rumors started showing around august/September.... phone was shown in November?
I don't see why we would see a nexus phone launch in under a year since the galaxy nexus was shown. Unless there is credence to having multiple phone manufacturers go at once.
I'd say a release is 6-12 months out for the next phone, just based on common sense
I don't think there gonna make a galaxy nexus 2

Well every november a new Nexus comes out to play..so be looking for some info on or around sept/Oct..should be based off the SG3..with some extra toys I myself really cant wait!! Cash is just waiting..l0l
I'm hoping realistically for this.
Quad-Core S4 (If they can get the 4G to work with it)
2GB RAM
3000maH+ battery
4.5-4.7 inch screen
720p+ screen
8MP rear camera with badass sensor
2MP front camera
Android 4.1+ obviously

Non configurable settings

No customization
Expensive accessories
The one thing apple has with iOS is its always upgraded to all devices. Not fragmented like android. We still don't have jelly bean. Also build quality. I'm getting tired of plastic $600 phones. At least apple uses quality materials. Also the iPhone has created a culture and had captured peoples hearts. its why they will always be on top.

Yeah that makes sense since the Android market share is already above 50% and iOS is still around 30%. I guess with those percentages Apple is most definitely still on top. LOL
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
Apple is on top as far as one phone model outselling any android model. I know the s3 recently outsold the 4s but what do you expect when everyone knows that it is very likely that a new phone would soon come out. New phone coming out means that better hardware will soon be available as well as the current hardware should be cheaper.
Android is on top as far as market value goes though by obviously having the largest share of the smart phone market.
I hate when people compare the fragmentation of android and apple. It is not conceivable to have every android device being kept with the latest android OS simply because it would be far too costly to do so. There are thousands of different models of android phones which have different hardware which further requires different software and drivers to operate their phones. How can someone compare keeping less than 10 devices up to date with the latest OS versus keeping thousands of devices up to date with the latest os?

What you call fragmentation is really called choice, which is better for the consumer. In an anticompetitive market consumers lose out. Apple’s anticompetitive market also contributes greatly to a lack of innovation. iOS is basically the same crap it has been since the first iteration.
It is surprising that you are on XDA forums and you haven't discovered Black Jelly.
I was an iPhone user for four years before I jumped to the atrix and now the galaxy 3. I would never go back but I can honestly say the most intriguing feature of the iphone 5 is the graphics capability. It is definitely unmatched in its class. But its never enough to get me back. Ive been sober for two years now with no urge to go back.

I agree with you about Apple's build quality - - it is very good. However, I'm perfectly happy with the build quality of my S3 as well. As for fragmentation, I have to laugh. Just because different gen iPhones run the same iOS version doesn't mean Apple enables all features for all phones. iOS is becoming very fragmented, they just disguise it better than Android.
And even the new iPhone has a tiny screen. My wife will get the new iPhone, but I'd never consider switching back after having used Android for the last 18 months.

Yep, ZDNet and other sources have the same scoop. Rumored to be 5" screen and quad core - more than likely a similar config to the Note 2.
lol.. I cant wait to see what goodies the new S4 will hold.... My current S2 is keeping my happy, by the time LTE even gets to me in Los Angeles county, the S3 wouldn't be useful for me and I'd have wanted the next S.X model
Can't wait till early 2014. We'll probably have the S6 by then. I like big upgrades, not incremental upgrades.

I...highly doubt..that the S4 will be released that soon. Samsung's not dumb.
The only reason they would put out a true successor so soon would be if the technologies involved were fantastic enough. In my mind, that would be a 1080p screen and the exynos 5. Those two probably would warrant a quicker push simply to be very far ahead of the pack.
Though I can't shake this feeling that we'll be seeing the exynos 5 in the next nexus, probably this fall. Nexus' are very much reference models, and releasing the first A15 as a nexus just sounds like such a good idea.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
Samsung always gimps the nexus line of phones so that its galaxy line will sell better. I seriously doubt the next nexus will have the a15 soc, probably the krait. Google needs to give someone else a shot on the next nexus cuz Samsung is not trying to sell out its own galaxy line, I'm not impressed with the past 2 nexus devices.

They shouldnt go with a 5 inch screen. They have note for bigger screens.

As long as the phones actual dimensions do not get bigger (5.5" x 2.5"ish) then it'll be fine for most people i guess. I envision the phone being "launched" like the galaxy s2 intl' at MWC with actual phones becoming on sale near the end of april/early may. Makes most sense with Sammys 1 year upgrade cycle.
Well seeing I am new to the E4GT. I am enjoying my S2. Come next year, I might be interested in the S4. Hopefully it will have newer features and improvements to make the phone stay very popular like the S2 and my old phone HTC EVO 4G. So far I am enjoying Samsung over HTC.
Now lets see this holiday season if Samsung and HTC throw dirty balls at Apple to delay the I5.

Its google's decision for the specs, they're trying to support more SoC and prove a point its not about power but software. Samsung simply just makes it. If was up to Samsung we would've seen an SD card support already for the nexus

I think Samsung releasing a S4 would be a good way to give the iPhone 5 some good competition in the first and second quarter of next year.
Why else would the be pushing the S3 right now? They want to sell as many S3's as they can so they can still finish out this year in the lead of all the competition. Then release the S4 to start the year next year.

That's really just an assumption more than anything else. Considering that most devices have well over a year of development cycle, and that the Google-Motorola deal wasn't finalized too long ago, it probably won't be until next summer that we see the fruits of the relationship.
Samsung still seems like the clear favorite for the next nexus, considering only their manufacturing prowess. HTC has too many problems right now, and LG's just don't sell well. Now Asus...I could really get on board with an Asus made phone. I'd argue they are on a similar plane as Samsung, albiet a slightly different one. Samsung's big advantage is their experience as a fab and foundry. Asus obviously has a celebrated PC motherboard heritage. Both are very good at engineering and design.
Could you imagine a joint-device between them? It will never happen, but I would weed-wack my grandmother for an Asus engineered, Samsung sourced and manufactured, Google coded device.

Pros: fast TI OMAP with great battery life, RGB led indicator, tonns of ROMs and future support from Google, OLED, USB Host, HDMI and many others... Choose between Nexus 3 and 4. I don't know about everyone else, but I didn't buy a Nexus looking for updates FROM GOOGLE. Upgraded from O.G. Droid to the Galaxy Nexus, so for me it was upgrading 4G and getting another pure Android device. I'm sorry but the nexus one was advertised as a developers phone. The Galaxy Nexus was not, Google geared the Galaxy Nexus towards consumers and they did the same with the Nexus 4 and the Nexus line of tablets. Don't tell me this is a developer phone and expect that to make up for its downfalls.

It may not have been advertised as a developer phone but google designs their nexus devices to be easily modded and developed on. Just because they wanted it to be easily usable by every day consumers doesn't mean it's not a development device. I think for most developers/rooters, that is the big draw of this and all other nexus phones. And I'm sure for many, that does make up for it's downfalls. I personally see no downfalls with the phone, I've had nothing but a great experience with it in all aspects other than sprint's service, which is no fault of the device itself.

ONLY thing thats not making me buy now is that 4 inch :/. But i really love the aluminum and build quality. Yes i know droid razr and htc one are built to last also.
SOMEONE CONVINCE ME NOT TO GO
You need reasons to stay with Android? Here you are.
Maybe wait for N5 and then decide.

Yea but this gnexus SLOWED down on me ALOT and it cant even last me halfaday
Yes im rooted yes i flashed a custom rom
So idk if i can wait for the 6. the only reason i would wait for 6 is for a BIGGER SCREEN i cant go back to 4 inches i swear if the iphone was 5 inches and running android it would be the perfect handset
CONVINCE ME TO CONVINCE YOU
If you want an iPhone go get one. There is no reason why anyone here would care. I don't mean this as a personal attack against you. I am just saying, there are many users who like to try different things. We are all fans of technology. Windows Phone, iOS, and some others have some decent offerings that may be preferable over Android to certain people. Android most certainly isn't for everyone, just as iPhones aren't for everyone. I definitely wouldn't just get something because "everyone" else has one though. I would try to make sure it is the right device for me before making that decision.
I personally couldn't envision myself leaving Android, at least as far as phones go anytime soon. I am too tied up into the Google apps, market and accessories (I have probably 20 USB cables). Also size most certainly matters to me when it comes to a phone. But on the tablet side, I have thought about an iPad or iPad Mini more than once.
If you like it, go for it. I used to think iphones looked good too, but they've had the same look for too long, now they look too old and boring to me. But at least the new iPhone can do call blocking finally and it does have more cellular bands than the GNex or Nexus 4, so if you check to make sure you won't lose a feature you're used to, and don't mind paying double than what the N5 will probably cost, or you can't get out of contracts anyway so you have to pay the same anyway - go for it. I bought an iPad because everyone claimed it was so magical. Guess what? It wasn't. It isn't a bad device though, just not anything better and in many ways it is more limited. But for the average person that doesn't matter, they will never find any limitations because they have no need nor desire to use anything beyond the basics. If you are one of these average people, you will be just as happy with an iPhone. So if you want one, go for it.

iPhone 5S still only has 1gb ram with its 64bit A7 dualcore chip an same stupid tall narrow screen which makes everything look un proportioned in portrait or landscape.
The iphone is only fast on benchmarks because the software iOS 7 is less demanding than android .

You need a new school if you feel left out due to "everyone else having an iPhone". While I'm not in school, out of people I know or work with maybe 1 in 10 have iPhones, the vast majority have android devices with a few old fashioned phones and a few windows phones thrown into the mix.

Now I see why you feel left out, b/c of your slow phone?
Because apple will hand over the finger print data to whichever agency asks them for it

I understand this frustration of feeling left out though. I am about to be a doctor and all of my fellow students and other docs mostly have iPhone. Reason is the medical apps always come out on iPhone first and some have never come to android. It is very frustrating to say the least. I love android, but I hate knowing that iPhone folks 1-up me on a lot of stuff In my field. It would be a sucky reason to have to leave android, but a reason that haunts me nonetheless.
