no counter root for sgs3 att is odin 100% necessary? - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

Hey guys, I'm on linux here and unfortuantely I do not have a windows computer. I'm pretty new to the android game, sgs3 is my first android phone.
My question: Since I don't have windows will mounting my phones internal flash drive and then using dd to flash the stock image with root enabled over to my phone work the same as odin? or does odin do something further? Also will heimdall work for this purpose? I suppose I can always bring up windows in the hypervisor but it seems like this would be easier. I am also just curious as to what odin does.

Odin is used to flash firmwares, modems, kernels, and recoveries. As far as I know, Heimdall doesn't support the S3, unless it's been updated and I don't know about it. That would be up to you to find out.
As for your first question about using dd, I haven't got a clue. Best wait for someone more knowledgeable then me to come in and answer that one.

Thanks for the reply, in linux dd is a terminal program that writes images to disk, among other things, be it usb, flash drive, hard drive etc. Like if you downloaded the ubuntu image for your computer and then wanted to install it to usb drive for a live image from which make an install on another computer you would use dd if=/image_pathway of=usb drive or flash drive or whatever media you wish to install it to. I have a pandaboard, and have actually used dd to write linaro android to the pandaboard's flash drive before, but I figure theres a good chance that the phone is more complex and may have hardware/software to prevent someone from simply using dd to write a disk image to the phones internal flash drive.

Actually, I believe I've heard of people being able to dd custom recoveries onto the phone. I don't remember where I saw this though.
Sent from my GS3

I think you need an unsecure kernel to the dd thing. I think.

Thanks for the replies. I just loadedup windows in the hypervisor and rooted that way. I wish I had a second phone to test stuff like this on lol. I have pandabaord to test software on but it's not quite the same.

Does anyone know who develops odin? Is it someone on this forum? Was thinking maybe they'd be willing to allow me to port it to linux.

Heimdall will work for you.

Odin is leaked software from Samsung.

Anyone else confirm? I can use heimdall to flash roms, and the root injected stock image to my sgs3 from within linux?

Odin is samsung software. We have a few samsung tablets that come in for repair where I work and Odin is what samsung gave us to flash their software onto the tablets.

Root SGH-I757

Anyway to root Bell Samsung Galaxy S2 LTE???
I cannot find anything on google or in this forums.
Thanks!!!
yea me either ive been searching for a couple weeks now.... it sucks
Rooting i757M
Am also still looking how to root this thing. The Skyrocket HD is merely the same phone, branded on AT&T carrier and this article made it clear that the phone has been silently put to the side, in favor of the coming S3. (phonesreview.co.uk/2012/05/10/samsung-galaxy-s3-buries-att-sii-skyrocket-hd).
That is, even on samsung online personal profile page, you can even find the SGH-i757M in the list of phone version, to add in your owner's page.
If anyone of you manage to root the phone, thanks to let me know.
Correction: The SGH-i757M can be found in the BAR model section on Samsung profile page and not under Smartphone. Hmm... weird categorization. Are those bar phones not smartphones? Oh, they are mini tablets.
Here is one.
Do you have any procedure to use that files? I just don't want to brick my phone
There's no any special procedure other than flash it with Odin
There're many tutorials about it here and there like that for example.

Has this been tested and confirmed to work? I don't have the device yet but this may make my decision to buy one.
dsixda, well, all I can say is that I flashed it personally (into E120L though) and it worked (including root).

Hey that is great news. I wonder if the CWM for the E120L is compatible then?
I wonder if this works to root the device, as I've read it worked for the Asian versions of the GS2 HD:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1321582
dsixda, I guess it won't be too hard for you to check that as you're recognized developer
You can download the stock I757M firmware with the CheckFus using advanced tab (or using cli only version) with the following data:
Model: SGH-I757M
Product code: SGH-I757ZKMBMC
HIDSWVER: I757MUGLCA/I757MOYCLCA/I757MUGLCA/I757MUGLCA
Yes, I'll try all that as soon as I get my device Always nice to have the stock Odin firmware so that I don't need to dump everything beforehand in case something goes wrong.
Thank you again
Just FYI, the stock firmware is now available at sammobile.com. Grab an account and search for SGH-I757M. The download is much faster than using CheckFus.
Dsixda! So happy your getting this Device, I also want to say thank-you for your Kitchen you created!! Amasing work. Used it all the time with my Evo 3d.
Just got the Samsung Galaxy s2 hd lte with the Bell network, Do you have any plans to incorporate this into your Kitchen??
Also is there any easy Root anyone knows of yet that doesn't involve Odin? Like superoneclick...etc

Try the Zergrush method which I linked in the previous page.
I haven't decided 100% whether to get it, as I still love my original S2. But if I get it I will incorporate it into the kitchen, once we figure out the custom recovery method.
I'm assuming any of the Tengrak GS2 HD recovery images (Odin .tar) will work, as long as you don't flash the associated Tegrak kernel for the ES120L/S/K?
You can always flash the stock firmware above in case you mess up.
Tried the Zergrush method, I had no luck. Oh well no big deal for now

Or flash the first link provided by rxulan in page 1. It's the stock ROM but the system.img has superuser injected in it.
And/or Google for the Tegrak custom recovery in Xda. Just flash one of those recovery.tar meant for the HD, but not the kernel.
ODIN ?

ODIN does not recognise .img or .ext4 files. I understand those are recovery files that CWD can restore but your device should already have been rooted. This is exactly the purpose of this thread, rooting the device first of all. This have been difficult for us to find the right .md5 files to use in ODIN. The device we're trying to root, SGH-i757M.
@ezechias
Odin doesn't recognize the files inside the rooted tar archive (the one linked on page 1), but you can flash them as a tar.md5, which you already know is a preferred format. There are guides online on how to convert it to tar.md5, you can Google it or I can post it later.
First, try to flash the TAR file as is; if it doesn't work then convert to tar.md5, then flash it.
Anyways, it's strange that nobody wants to be the lab rat to test the rooted TAR or the custom recovery that we have already discussed. We have the emergency stock ROM to fall back on if anything goes wrong. Looks like I'll have to purchase this device soon and try it out myself I already have all the files and stock firmware downloaded and ready to go
ICS for E120 K/L/S has been released.
I'm sure the same will happen with I757M pretty soon

Rooting in Linux

My Google-fu has failed me, I'm unable to find a how-to guide for rooting the Sprint version of the GS3 from Linux. Lots of guides out there for the international version, which believe me I have tried, but no luck. Has anybody else figured this out, or are we still waiting?

Guide helps you build the latest RC of Heimdall (1.4 RC1) that will work on our Sprint SGS3 phones to put on Custom recovery and so forth (in place of using the Windows Odin) --> http://en.samaanet.com/?p=9279
It requires some package installation, and I had to fiddle with it a bit. But it _does_ work if you get the Heimdall 1.4RC1 built (I just used it instead of the script after things got built and installed) Needs QT and a few other libs, that may fail to install on their own..
Fun times ! Keep on Flashing..
You can try Odin with Wine. Not sure if it will work but you can try.

Yeah, isn't it funny how there are so many rooting guides that require windows when Linux is the OS of choice for development? Lol
Anyway, you can use ODIN through Wine

[Q] plz help....how to root at&t gs3 on linux

please help i have been looking everywhere to find out how to root my att galaxy s3 on linux. i have only been able to find instructions for int. version or using windows. link to a thread or anything will help. thanks in advance
Maybe use wine... Not sure if that's safe though. Search for running Odin with wine
You can try to search for Heimdall, witch from what I understand is the Linux equivalent to Odin for Windows. I actually just removed Linux from my computer and reinstalled Windows specifically so I could root. I wasn't happy about it but I figured I would go with the tried and proven method to avoid any possible headache. I can say that mrRobinson's no flash counter trip method worked flawlessly for me on Windows though. I can't say anything about Heimdall though, as I was too nervous to try it.
Heimdall will handle it; I've done it myself. See here for how to use it in this case.
thanks

Yes, considering that set of instructions was developed based on my own device.

[Q] Is there a way to root the S3 via ADB script?

So, after messing around with trying to root the S3 via adb scripts for a while, trying to get fastboot working, I came across several sources that the S3, and Samsung altogether, does not use fastboot. (I didn't know this, as I've never owned a Samsung phone before.)
Considering the lack of fastboot, is there anyway to adb push the su and busybox binaries and root the phone via adb scripts? I've tried, but as you all are aware, I'm sure, the adb remount script is a forbidden operation.
I have a Virgin Mobile (VM) S3, same model number SPH-L710. The reason I want to root via ADB is to avoid tripping the flash counter, as ODIN is required for every root method, and I'm not sure if Triangle Away is compatible with the VM bootloader. I am also reluctant to use CF-Autoroot from XDA, as it contains a Sprint boot.img, and I don't want to mess up my phone.
Any help would be appreciated.

Yes, in s4 forums but it has worked for a large large range of Qualcomm devices

Thank you very much for this. What's the likelihood of bricking my phone if this exploit doesn't work? After looking at the run script, I know it's just pushing the binaries to temp directories. But, I already replaced my phone under store warranty once, and won't be able to do it twice.

I guess I'll join the club. Exploit failed. There was a minor incremental update to the VM S3 recently. Maybe, they patched that loophole?
VM is Sprint there should be no difference. You can flash a costom recovery then just flash the team epic root file. It's not going to touch your bootloader or anything. Triangle away should work spot on for the VM device as well.
Remember search is your best friend, Have a great day!

Thank you for your reply. I would have searched, but I didn't really know where to begin. But, your reply has me pondering... If I have the stock recovery.img, can I flash via odin after unrooting and triangle away to restore to stock?
Again, sorry for adding clutter.
EDIT: Kind of answered my own question in a sense, as the mere flash of stock recovery via ODIN would trip flash counter... conundrum.
Would odin trip or brick anything with 4.2.2?
Would odin trip or brick anything with 4.2.2? Now?? Know there has been some issues with KNOX, My son's phone just cracked, and he cant use the screen and I want to wipe/install factory rom before I sell it.

Odin on Linux?

Hey xda, I've researched this on and off and could never find a solution or definite answer.
I've been thinking of doing away with Windows instead of dual booting.
Edit. I should state I'm using Linux, specifically Ubuntu mate.
So my question is: Is there a reliable way to flash stock firmware, specifically on the note 4?
Either by heimdal, or Odin in a VM?
I've tried Odin on vm before couldn't get phone recognized. And can't trust the answers I've found about heimdal, being safe or not. So if someone with some experience and a confirmed solution could help, please.
My primary concern is for the safety of the phone, so if Windows&Odin are the safest, or if other options are risky then please let me know.
Thank you all on xda for all that I've learned here!
I would also like to know the answer to this question. My desktop is an iMac. I have a couple of laptops that are dual boot Win 7/Linux. I too, would like to get rid of all my Windoze machines, if I can find a reliable way to flash ROMS. I hardly ever boot into Windows anymore. Thanks to anyone who can enlighten us.
Have a look at my tutorial: Odin on Linux. Hope this helps!
