I'm serious about my portable music and am trying to find the best combination of Xperia phone and SD to match an iPod Classic in file transfer speed and audio quality but I'm mostly concerned with data transfer for now.
I'm using a class 4 32GB Sandisk and want to shoot myself :crying:

Anyone using a Class 10 or any kind of Ultra SD? How's that going? Do you own/owned any portable music devices like an iPod to compare with? Use a microSD USB adapter or SDcard adapter to get 10Mb/s, if I do use the usb cable the speed is like 2mb/s
I use a Samsung Class 10 32GB SD and the speeds are very Good.

I don't get it. What's so bad about class 4 microSD cards? I use Sandisk 16GB Class 4 aswell, I don't cry about lag, because I don't have it. Transferring songs isn't that slow, I don't do it often either so no problems with it.
Or is it just that people keep wanting more and more?

Is it just that people don't read entire posts?
As I posted above already, the issue is that I've been using various dedicated media devices for years which have consistently performed at far higher data transfer speeds. I'll say it again:
I have 32GB of music, if I transfer with an Apple device it transfers at least 1 song per second. For a large music collection, it does this very quickly as you can see. If I'm transferring the newest 20 or 30 songs in my collection, it does that in about 30 35 seconds.
If I asked my last phone or my current Android phone to do this, it takes about 4-5 seconds to transfer ONE song (or podcast). Whether it's a few minutes for just a few songs, or a few hours to transfer my whole collection, it's terrible performance and tedious.
Which brings me to my question about data speeds. I'm sure someone suggested before that it could be partly Apple cables being designed for optimum transfer speeds. I completely forgot about SD classes though, and I found the Sandisk Class 10 Ultra transfer up to 30mbps. I checked on eBay and they are not that expensive - about €30 for for 32GB. I'll get that soon and report back!
p.s. I just asked Sony about this and they said they've tested classes 2 and 4 with their phones and said that a class 10 will likely not work with their phones so not to purchase! Hmm. Mind you, many people here have bought 64GB SD cards when Sony said 32GB is the highest that you should use. I'll find someone here using a class 10!

One of the problems - the chip. Phone's motherboard and it's transfer speed. It takes a longer 'distance' for the data to travel - from the computer, through the cable, through the chip, onto the SD.
Apple devices don't use SD cards, they have built-in memory chips, which have a lot faster r/w speeds, also they use the full max speed of USB 2.0(35 megabytes per second), microUSB has a bit lower rate of speed, and certain compression to transfer faster, which doesn't happen on other devices.
On the internet, there are sometimes written only maximum speeds(like you said - up to). The Class shows only minimum speed, Class 10 having minimum of 10 MB/s for write operation.
Android devices are not the same as Apple. Everything can't be the same, because it has been built different.

What is roughly speaking, the best performance you can achieve with Android using an SD? What is the best performance a micro-USB can provide? On my new laptop, I made sure to get a USB 3.0 port but I'm guessing I won't be able to use that with Android until compatible devices are released. Devices with on-board storage as large as I'd like are uncommon and very expensive, so SD it is. Would a class 10 SD be the best you could get? I would be happy with a slight decrease in Apple-type performance, but 1 song every 4-5 seconds is too bad. Essentially, what I'm trying to do is to integrate my phone and media player in one device, without paying a fortune for an iPhone.

A 32GB Class 10 SDHC is the largest and fastest kind of SD card compatible with Arc/Arc S. Some people have had luck with larger cards, but officially SDXC isn't supported on 2011 Xperia phones.
Phones currently don't support USB 3.0 as they don't have the processing power or data bandwidth to support USB 3.0 transfer speeds. You're hard pressed to find anything that maxes out USB 2.0 apart from dedicated storage - the two devices that exceed USB 2.0 speeds that I own are an external hard drive and a card reader that I use with high-speed CompactFlash. I usually get 10MB/s writes using this with my Class 10 MicroSD.
To be honest, trying to write at high speeds through the phone's system is an exercise in futility - just get a good card reader, it doesn't have to be a USB 3.0 model (which are usually rather expensive and aimed at photographers) as SDHC maxes out around 10-12MB/s writes anyway.
I got a 32 GB class 10 card with my phone when I got it. I move all apps to SD as much as possible, and also listen to a lot of music. I also take a lot of pictures and videos. So for me it was just calculated in as part of the cost of the phone when I bought it - it was a no-brainer.

My plan is: new phone with excellent audio tech+class 10 SD+great earphones=very happy me. I'll have the phone next week, finally.

I've a 16 gb class 10 Samsung sd, and run's fine whithout problems.

Well I have the same card, and I never managed to cross 7MB/s, with large files, music or videos. Not on my old system, not on my new system. Not on Windows XP, not on Ubuntu, not on Windows 7. Not on 6 different USB ports on my old system, and not on 8 USB ports on my new system. Two different USB cables are tested also.
So I'm really curious to know how could anyone manage to get 15MB/s with this phone.
Do you mind to post screenshot while transferring data at 15MB/s?

Ok, i dont know if all you are really using Original Sony USB cable or one chinese and cheaper, due to a posible damage on original one, i only posted for info.
Check write/read speed, tested with Antutu benchmark.
Like I said earlier, card is SanDisk class 10, 16GB.
I'm using 32 GB Ultra High Speed (UHS-I) microSD, works fine
also i've got cute micro adaptor with it for fast downloading from PC
my AnTuTu scores 5624

Have just acquired a Touch Pro 2 on eBay, and am now thinking about getting an SD card for it. I assume the TP2 supports SDHC...?
I can get a 16GB class 2 card for about £30, or a 16GB class 6 card for £50. Am I likely to notice much actual difference in speed between the two when used with a TP2?
Depends.
In day to day usage of the TP2, no I don't really think so. You're not going to be able to take pictures any faster (the camera isn't capable of fast shooting), movies will run fine from a slow card. Maybe searching through your email would be a bit faster, if you have a lot, but I can't imagine it will be significant.
Where you would see a difference is if you take your SDHC card out of the TP2 and put it into a PC for dumping lots of data on it at once - for example, copying over lots of MP3s or movies. If you're transferring multiple GBs at a time direct from a PC, you will notice a worthwile % increase with the faster cards.
So if you do that regularly it might be worth it. If you tend to change the data on the card only infrequently, then I doubt it is.
Personally I will be getting a slow card. I only have a fast card SD card for my Digital SLR camera, where the faster card enables more shots to be taken per second.
whatever you do do not get a Transcend class6 16Gb card. They are not compatible. I know there's a thread listing card compatibility in the rhodium forum, but I couldn't find it now.

firstly i beleive the class relates to write and not read speed.
second do not buy a card off ebay whatever you do.
i have come accross an a-data 16gb class 6 in my searches. in the end i got 8gb class 4 from play for a tenner delivered. may get a 16gb if i ever hit the limit. by then the price will have dropped to reasonable level.
i had a 2gb in my xperia and never filled it. i have a ipod touch for music and a netbook.

all the cards i have ever bought off ebay have been fakes.
some have worked but been slow. others have corrupt sectors. some have failed all together. thankfully last time pay pal refunded me.

buy the card if you want. that site has programs you can test it with to determine if its legit. i will never buy a memory card from ebay again.
Class only deals with write speeds, not read speeds BUT if the card has a higher write speed, it will normally have a higher read speed as well. (Though it's not a set rule).
Thx for the heads up. I think i'm going to risk it anyways. This seller has been on there since 2000 and has sold a ridiculous amount of flash memory ~20,000. I would hope the system would show some signs of fakery over that span of time.

I decided I didn't really need 16GB of storage anyway, and ordered an 8GB class 6 card - a SanDisk Ultra. Got it from these guys on Amazon UK Marketplace.
They have a pretty high turn-over - nearly 30,000 ratings in the past year. I also used this tool to check whether the card was genuine or counterfeit. It passed with flying colours (no errors at all) so I think it's probably the real deal.
A quick, informal test (copying a 700MB file onto the card) suggested it was writing at about 12.5MB/s when the card was connected directly to the PC's USB port, and about 5.5 MB/s when accessed via the phone (in disk-drive mode). That suggests that the phone might get some benefit from a class 6 card, although it's hard to be sure. Certainly this a is a VERY fast card when removed from the phone and connected straight to the PC. (In fact the testing software rated it even higher - 14.9MB/s write, and 17.5MB/s read).
No reliability problems of the sort associated with the Trascend cards (although I'm not sure that affects 8GB cards anyway).
Trancend 16GB Class 6
I currently have a Trancend 16GB Class 6 and it works just fine.
I only buy cards from Sandisk and usually from amazon. EBay has a lot of fakes on it! I have a 16GB Class 2 from amazon that I picked up for $40. Speed test while in Disk Drive mode through the phone show a Write speed of 3.8MB/s and 6.4MB/s read speed. I have 10GB filled so far and It didn't really take that long to do. I'd say if you were filling the card up with 10GB of new music a day then yeah those speed suck but for a few big loads just to get it started no big deal to me.
I can stream a 800x480 AVC ~1.2Mbit off the card with no hiccups. So I'm not worrie about the speed considering anything more then that the processor becomes the bottleneck not the card.

I just recieved an A-Data 16GB Class 6 from ebay. Seems to be fine, passed memory test with no errors @ 8.9MB/S write and 15.1MB/sec read.
Worth the money just copying video and music files to the drive via pc. Way faster than my previous 8GB Class 2. Don't notice any real difference in the phone tho.

Try playing a few songs with the manila musictab with the screen turned off..
I had a Transcend 16Gb class6 that disconnected if I tried that. I had to reboot to get the card to register in the Phone.
Been out on the road for work all week using music over bluetooth and co-pilot 8 heavily. Working like a charm.....maybe i just got lucky.
I'm putting my $0.02 on the table on MicroSDHC cards. Basically for those of you that want faster data transfer on a larger card like an 8GB or 16GB MicroSDHC, it can make a difference but beware of brands that are not well known and their transfer speeds. The Class ratings on the MicroSDHC cards only apply to their guaranteed throughput rates and are NOT indicative of the actual speed experienced on the cards. I've seen some Class 2 Sandisk cards outperform Class 6 A-Data cards before which is a little scary.
Ok I have an Acer Iconia a500, currently I have only a 6gb card installed. Now when i look online i see that the micro sd cards are rated by classes. What is that for?

Nope, problems/crashing etc would be down to quality not size.
Also faster write speed doesn't mean it performs faster when used as a "hard drive" like in a phone, so lower class ones can outperform higher, but you'd have to try them to see.
It's because they're designed with things like cameras in mind, where getting the image saved quickly so you can take another one is the most important thing.
In a mobile phone/tablet they're accessed more randomly, and that is where it's been found that some higher class cards don't perform as well.
Mini SD cards, so tiny for my big hands.

Tell me about it, I just reordered one after giving up the search on my current one. It's not completely lost, I'll probably come across it one day when re-organizing the room.
I keep mine in those Sd card cases and shove it in a crown royal bag....
You're probably fine with a Class 2 microSD card, as you won't have large files (or a large amount of small files) written in a short time.

Write speeds determine the amount of time it takes to transfer the data, the moment you for example, click the button on your camera to ask the camera to take the image. You will probably remember that back in the early days of SD memory cards, there was an awful amount of lag time on cards, i.e from when you heard the click on the button (when you asked your camera to take the picture), to when you heard the double click (which is normally when the image has been written to the card).
Read speeds indicate the amount of time it takes for a card to transfer the data to a PC/Laptop. I.e the amount of time it takes to read the data off the card. Generally the higher the capacity of the card, this will naturally give a higher write speed. So if you have a 32GB card full of data and its only a class 2, it would take much longer than a 32GB card thats class 10, to send all the info to your pc etc.
Class 10 cards are recommended for HD video, or minimum class 6 really. You will probably find a 16GB class 4 card for example, will not work on say a Samsung HD Camcorder. Hi speed cards are more efficient at presenting and recording. It's really up to you. If you buy the cheaper version and it doesn't present at the speed you think it should you'll have answered your own question.
You guys have it mostly right. The higher class your card is the faster it can write a file to its memory, the trade off is that the higher class cards have slower rapid access speeds, something to do with how it prepares files before writing. Basically, a class 10 will write a 1GB file faster, but if you try to write 15 3MB files quickly your performance will suffer. For something like a phone I recommend a class 4 or 6. For cameras I'd go higher (I don't know a whole lot about cameras).

Of lexar, patriot, and topram. I would assume patriot is at least equal to lexar since they make RAM for computers. I know lexar is like a huge flash memory manufacturer though. It's $20 more than the patriot one though. I'm looking at 32GB ones because my FLAC music doesn't like fitting on 22GB between my phone and 8gb microSD card I have now. I'd probably still need a 64GB one if they ever come out though, FLAC is unforgiving in its size, that's the price of quality though.
Funny thing is all the music I'm putting on it is only 18.5GB (and I even added a few bands' discographies worth of music to the list to check size) on it and.. it doesn't really even fit half of it?... Anyway, that blazing 2MB/s average 5MB/s peak transfer speed to my infuse is just incredibly annoying so I'd love to just have a removable SD card with all the stuff that's subject to future hate, such as music.

well so, for music only, this unknown 32gb microSD is enough with my cowon j3 so i have 64gb in total for my flacs, but i would never use it in my phone.. i just dont trust it enough.. only sandisc for my phones
Nonononono. I can't buy sandisk because they don't make a class 10 32GB microSD card. I can NOT sit through another 5 hours of transferring my songs to my phone. 10 would at least half the time.
But the weird thing is the media player that came with my phone was playing FLAC songs fine until now and now it's all "This file type is not supported"

Nonononono. I can't buy sandisk because they don't make a class 10 32GB microSD card. I can NOT sit through another 5 hours of transferring my songs to my phone. 10 would at least half the time.
But the weird thing is the media player that came with my phone was playing FLAC songs fine until now and now it's all "This file type is not supported"

aaah, i see. i got extremely slow transfer rates with my cheap 32gig card too, but i dont care.. i just let it transfer an hour and go eat something xD
I always use sandisk. it's fine for me!
Man I can't wait until this new thing that IBM made that's 100x faster than flash comes out. I could transfer all my songs in a few minutes instead of 5 hours.

have to agree with that.. if you have something that takes 5 hours on a semi fast SD card why not just start it overnight and sleep on it.. Is it really that critical to transfer all that music in such a short period of time?

This may be hard to comprehend, but some people have jobs that actually require communication in the form of a mobile phone. If it takes 5 hours to transfer the music I have right now, I don't even have half the music I want, it could take 15 hours to transfer all the music, do I sound like I have the time to not use my phone for anything for 15 hours?

there are usb SD card adapters. i use them, you should to.

Most of these cards comes with an SD Adapter which you can plug in your laptop, otherwise there are also microsdhc to usb adapters available if you don't have access to a laptop with an sd card reader.
then again there are also options for for multi card readers which are pretty cheap.

I always use either sandisk or transcend (currently using a 32gig transcend).
I'm using a Sandisc microsd card 16gb. It works great.
Using a Transcend Class 10 16GB currently. Faster than stock card

I am having an 8GB class 10 Toshiba MicroSDHC with technical reading speed indicated at up to 25mb/s and writing speed up to 20mb/s but I usually can only get slightly more than half of its full speed capability when running a benchmark Is it because I did not perform an initial format for the card or the Play does not support such hi-speed transaction?
It has been proven that the Xperia PLAY and probably other phones as well have problems with Class 10 cards. The problem with Class 10 cards is that, while they have super high speed writing capabilities, there goes a trouble with reading speeds. It has been proven in games in which during gameplay, the games that were tested lagged to the point of unplayability while they are trying to read game data (or SD files, more commonly) from the card.
Users here mostly recommend Class 2 and 4 regardless of the capacity.
PS: I can live with Class 2 microSDHC, so why can't you?
Well, I was attracted by producer's advertisement of their so-called fastest microsdhc in the market and did not know the fact that my PLAY does not handle such speed.
Since I already bought it, do you know if there is any solution now to overcome this problem and utilize the full capability of the card' speed?
honestly, i don't know. first things first when buying new hardware, read and read and read and read and read and read a lot of reviews until you are satisfied. never read company claims because they are just marketing strategies, ALL LIES, rather, read user opinions.
since you bought it already, all i can think of for it to not be wasted is to just buy a card reader for it and use it as a flash memory stick for your laptop or desktop instead. i mean use it like a regular USB flash drive. that's just my opinion though. you really can't stick a Class 10 card on the XPlay. all hell will break loose.
start looking for class 2 or 4 instead.
So sad...I thought I could somehow improve my PLAY performance. Anyway, I think I will use it for my Digital Camera instead and start looking for the class 4 one as your advise.

Class 10 cards are KILLER in a digital Camera. I use one in my Canon Rebel T1i and continuous shooting works so much better and faster with a Class 10 card. Also much smoother video recording if you record in HD.
BTW the best card for this device is the Sandisk 32GB Class 4 card. Buy from a reputable seller as fakes are out there...
I am currently using a Sandisc 32gb Class 4 card and there are slight lags on Modern COmbat 2, my old card was a class 6 16gb card. I saw better performance on the class 6. I am aware of the class 10 issues. My question is I am currently using SD card speed increase software to cahgne the Android cache size from 128kb to 4mb, is this software make a difference? Just curious to get peoples input.

i'd stick to class 2 if i were you, it's slow when writing (but that's already fast for me), but it's fast when reading.. at least no lags when something operates within the card..
and oh, is it true that SanDisk get their cards from random unbranded producers then label them with "SanDisk"? If so, then I won't trust this brand anymore..
what is the best brand then? they say it's only between SanDisk, Kingston, and Transcend. But my sister had problems with Kingston USB Flash drives where they periodically corrupt files and have slow writing/reading speeds and that gives me a negative feedback on the whole company. as for Transcend, i think it's too cheap that the quality might be substandard.
I'm still using the stock card that came with my Play (i don't know but it doesn't have a brand) and it's doing its job pretty well. i'm considering an upgrade soon.

It is a great information indeed. I am more confident for my next choice of card now.
Problem with high class SDHC cards is that they're good at big files, but suck at small files like game data files on phones.
Class 4&6 are the most versatile for all the various things you might do with the phone.
Also, I've always found SanDisk to be the most reliable.

Not for the average user. If your just looking to store music and pictures, you're better off going with a regular SD car. Cheaper and they work haha

I would have to agree. I have the same card and I am rather disappointed at the speeds I get. Granted I got it for only about $26 (32GB Class 10 was about $21). But I was hoping for a little closer to what the speeds on the package stated.

Yeah it's worth it I have a sdxc 64gb for burst transfers it is ridiculous it can peak 30mbs it sustains 10over USB internally 14mbs

Even using a USB 2 card reader, I don't notice any speed increase.
What about for just opening apps on your phone and flashing zips?

He had it right, your card reader connects to your main board via usb connection. If your using a USB or USB 2.0 you won't notice any speed increase because the connection speed cap is below the speed rating of the SD. If you have a reader that is USB 3.0 compatible you will notice a big jump. On your phone, you usually won't notice a big jump, camera shots are stored a little quicker, flashing roms may be a little faster but overall, you probably won't notice.
Speed wise, not that big on the phone itself. Size wise, it's the only way to get bigger than 32Gb isn't it?
Sandisk Ultra (30 MB/s) and Extreme Pro (95 MB/s) are the only game in town for these speeds. Practically speaking for a phone, I doubt the 95 MB/s is worth it unless there is something specifically you need.

I have had two of the 32 GB ultras that have crapped out on me after about a month and a half of normal use. I pretty much always transferred through MTP so not sure what caused it other than a bad product. Heard some other stories of the same. Beware.

Yeah, contrary to popular belief, Sandisk is the "Yugo, Walmart, Dollar store" quality brand of SD cards. Very few professional photographers and other folks along those lines would touch that brand. You get what you pay for.
My last two cards have been SanDisk no issues. More then1yr of use. Good luck finding a 64gb card not made by them... the list is short and shadier.... for a crappy quality card how is it they beat every one else to the punch

If you want to record 1080 p video directly to your card, then definitely go with class 10 ultra. Otherwise I wouldn't expect to see much difference in phone performance. SanDisk 64 card has been solid for me. What issues have pros reported? Or is it just not wanting to be caught with a consumer level product and looking amateur?
