Fastest LTE network? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

OK.. So I'm not going to pretend I understand everything there is to know about wireless networks. But every day we see commercials from every cell phone company claiming they are the best, fastest and most reliable. What is the true skinny? Does anyone really know?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium

I would assume it's verizon... but it also depends on where you live.

I just find it so funny.. And yet so confusing that everyone claims to be the best. That clearly cannot be the case.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium

Verizon's is really fast and has a large bandwidth( hope I'm using that right) like a my buddy pulled down 20 mbps at the bar. But your going to pay a premium for it. I'm content with the speeds that I get with T-Mobile

Yea as all the others stated here in New York City Verizon is the fastest. But the monthly bill that follows as well as the taxes and frees aren't worth it. I had a Gnex on their network for about 4 months then sold the phone and terminated my contract $360 to move to the $30 monthly 4g plan with my white gsm nexus I bought off ebay

My friend pulled 35mbps on virgin mobile LTE where I live. She consistently can pull that too. On my HSDPA model I pull 18mbps consistently with virgin mobile.

Yep Verizon will win and make you broke at the same time!

OK..i too can pull super fast speeds as well on my vzw nexus. My question however is how do the other networks claim they are the fastest? We have all seen and heard the commercials. I know all about marketing and what not. Are they just lying? Or is there something I'm missing?

Well nobody is going to say they are the slowest. Just because they say something doesn't make it true

It's all about the wording. T-mobile will say they have the fastest 4G network (HSPA+) which is true. And in AT&T commercials they claim to have the largest 4G network..which is also true. Neither carrier even touches on LTE when talking about largest or fastest, because they can't compete there.

Verizon is fastest i think
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus

It depends where you live. Like on average where I work att is a hair faster than Verizon but in most areas you'll find the roles reversed. Also look to see sprints speeds. Their network is pretty empty so you'll probably see better speeds.

Verizon in warner robins Ga. Most places I go are 20+ DL speeds. Rare I get less than 15.

On what device? You need to compare same device, otherwise its pointless.
Allow me to explain. Android uses buffers for the network in the initramfs. Manufacturers like to tweak these. You can essentially trick a speedtest into reporting over 100Mbps down. This is how the Thunderbolt was pulling 60+ with LTE at times.
Speedtests are fun but fall under the same trap as most benchmarks, and are really not indicative of true performance.

If you look at the commercials T-Mobile claims there android phones are faster than every other companies iPhone which would be true seeing how the iPhone is only 3g. Hands down Verizon is the fastest in my eyes. I don't mind paying the price for the speeds. Check out my signature that was the fastest I got but stopped testing because I realized I used over 500 mb of data doing speed tests alone

Accidentally thanked you but it wouldn't hurt ehh? But in his sig. it does say Galaxy Nexus.

Sprint LTE Discussion

So, of all of you who have received there coveted Galaxy Nexus on the 20th like i, when switching the network mode to LTE/CDMA, is there ANYONE?! who has LTE Coverage and was able to produce a speed test?
Cause there is currently no LTE service in my area (Falls Church, VA).
I won't even bother for a while I live in San Jose CA. reports say San Francisco should have it soon and I work up there. I'll try soon up there.
Well it'd be a long shot and spotty at best. Sprint hasn't officially launched a single LTE market afaik.
I got my nexus on Sunday and the employees at the sprint store told me that they were told that sprint is scheduled to flip the switch for lte network on April 30. By the way I live in San Antonio tx.

Ya, Sprint hasn't launched any LTE networks yet. The date is still up in the air right now. Expect it by summer though.

Check for updates on LTE rollout in your area - great site with many XDA peeps
If it isn't up by May 9 I am making a trip to Austin and Sprint LTE test area is Waco so I will stop in Waco and try to connect to LTE and give some speed numbers.
Hell for all we know Sprint has blocked us from connecting to LTE even if it is out there until it's fully rolled out.

Around the intersection of 281 and Bitters in San Antonio, there is 4g coverage.

They only use half the spectrum of what Verizon has deployed so the downlink should be peaking at about 37mbps on Sprint's unloaded LTE. And since there is really no one on the network, you should be able to see those speeds if the network is properly configured.
Post some screenshots from speedtest.app.

4G on TMobile is the 3G network with enhanced back-haul. So Edge is the fallback for 3G.

Because T-Mobile thinks people are stupid and like to call their 3G network 4G. 4G is HSPA and HSPA+ combined to them.
Also it says "only seen while roaming" so they must not roam over 3G much.

I've spent time traveling around the Kansas City, KS metro area, and it seems most places are lit up now, especially in Olathe. Average speeds are a little disappointing considering these towers should have very little load. I've done approximately 350 speed tests so far.
I'm getting a consistant average of 10mbps down/up around the entire metro, with highs of 13mbps down/up and lows of 8mbps down/up during the day. Late at night speeds are 15mbps down/up around the metro for me. In my basement I only get about 6-7mbps down/up (with 0-1 bars) no matter the time of day.
The latency is outstanding! I've had pings as low as 42ms. The highest I have seen is 70ms, and the average is about 55ms. Great for remote desktop and video chat
I'll keep this updated with my findings. Highest test I have pulled so far has been 20 down/15 up.
Don't think so. Not here in Dallas yet.

Depressed about the Verizon abandonment for Nexus 4 thread.

I am sad. And alone, so very alone. Well I guess not that sad. But I think it's a bad move to not have a nexus device available on all carriers. Maybe a delayed release will occur?
Considering the small number of people on Verizon that would actually buy a Nexus 4 compared to the sales worldwide, and the disproportionate amount of hassle/hoops Google would have to jump through to offer it on Verizon, I don't think it's that big of a loss to Google.

I'm not surprised by the decision but I don't think it has to so with verizon's handling of the galaxy nexus other than the standard blocking of unlocked devices bit that Verizon does. I don't know if I want Verizon to change their ways there, google to work out an unlocked devices deal with them, or Google to give in and just sell a Verizon nexus verizon's way. I guess I just find all the cacophony of U.S. cellphone bands annoying. I could just about survive fine on lte only at this point with Verizon...if they get volte up and running and let me buy such a device. I suppose how unlocked devices will get on eventually...but it feels too far away.

I am relieved that Verizon isn't getting the next Nexus. Verizon's exclusivity and subsequent delay with releasing the Galaxy Nexus late last pretty much ruined the launch of the phone.
Many people had to resort to importing overpriced international models because no unlocked UMTS/HSPA was available in the USA for MONTHS.
Google is doing it correctly for the consumer this time. One phone running a global standard radio at a GREAT price.
I just wish I had $1000 laying around so that I could buy all of the devices they just announced.

Sent from my SPH-L900 using Tapatalk 2
Nope, they recently turned on 4g all over for me LTE everywhere I mainly travel

I do on occasion, but its because our 3G network is over loaded. they have us set to get LTE @ some point. its all based on how hard your tower is being hit and very little to due with your phone or sprint as a whole.
all good here ; )

I experienced this as well. I thought it was me because I reset some severs to
0.0.0.0
And 0
But when I changed the back data was still slow
Sent from the best phone on the planet, Apple take Note............
Yes! I'm wondering if it had anything to do with the software upgrade. My data used to be blazing fast. Now I can be stuck with 100-200 for download

Mine are far better than they were on my 3D. Plus I get LTE now at work, love it.

My data speeds are better than they were on my E4GT. We are still on 3G here.

My et speeds were better for me than this. Even wifi seems slower, is weird
sent from my awesomely huge Note II
Maybe Sprint is upgrading the towers there. I heard the speeds get slow while the work is under way...
New LTE towers in Austin installed this month. Lays just say I'm not complaining.

Doesn't this phone not have EVDO but SVDO or something of nature? When it comes to 3G it all depends on your location to pick up SVDO speeds. During speedtests in my area, with full bars, I'll get 1.2mbps down but most of the time I struggle to hit 1. In my girlfriends neighborhood...it is constantly 2-3mbps down. I would imagine because her 3G towers are upgraded already? The only reason it doesn't bother me is because I actually have 4G LTE most of the time in my house and whenever I go outside or down the street etc.
Data speed is awful here....even close to the tower.
When I upgraded to the Note 2 they took away my discount. Now I have crappy data AND a higher bill. We aren't supposed to get LTE until end of 2013 in St. Louis. I really don't think we will get in the small town I live in at all. So, I think I am taking this back and switch to AT&T. What good is unlimited data if its so slow that I cant use it. At&t us the only option. T mobile and vzw have no coverage here. Sprint was of no help including the retentions department. BYE SPRINT

That would be awesome for me. I easily hit under 100 at work with full signal.

Switched towers in the speed test app. Forgot to screen shot the original test. Once I get to work tomorrow morning, ill redo the test and screen shoot it. Test was performed at home for this thread. There are two Sprint 4g w/LTE towers in the process of going live in my area (Lincoln Park, MI). Till Sprint gets on the ball with better service around here, will just have to put up with things. My phone was doing going whacko w/roaming m and "preparing network" mesgs. As I typed this, got a preparing network mesg. Again, people with patience are needed while on Sprint's service..lool.

What you're speaking of is eHPRD that's the high speed 3g you're seeing, if you're getting that, chances are LTE is nearby or being turned on soon

Here's the new test while at my work. As you see huge difference then when at home. Thats due to being much closer to the tower.
