Lack of 3G ? About to return my SGS3 for an iPhone - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

So is there a "3G" on the SGS3, because I either get full bars and "Edge" or I get "4G"(which is HSPA+) but I never have just plane jane "3G"?.....its starting to bug me because my friend has ATT as well and we will be standing in the same exact place and his iphone will get 3G while my SGS3 will only have edge.....I don't understand why this is? Does the iPhone have different antennas or something? I don't really want to trade my SGS3 in for an ios device, but all the features on the SGS3 become somewhat pointless when I can't really do anything because edge blows ass... So can anyone give me some insight into the matter?

Have you looked in wireless and settings > mobile networks > Network Mode?

Hsdpa and hsdpa+ are 3g homie. The phone calls it 4G however as a marketing tool. If your on true 4G it will say 4G lte.
Check what user above said. And have you run a side by side speed test?

Maybe you got a lemon but some of my coworkers have iPhone and in downtown area they get edge and I get 4G lte. I came from an iPhone also and I can tell you sgs3 has better signal everywhere and lte is the reason why.

I would recomend getting a replacement S3 first to see if you have any improvements. If the phone doesn't use 3G or 4G(HSPA+) at all then that is not normal behavior. I have not once been connected to Edge since i got my phone a month ago.

I don't have any of those network settings you are talking about. There is no wireless and settings? I have More settings and then network modes, but there isn't any selection for like 3G 2G LTE etc....
I ran a side by side speed test, and he got like 1.4MBPS and I couldn't even get the speed test to load, but after trying I did and it was like .3 MBPS...
I understand the LTE signal thing, but there is no LTE here and I don't think its coming anytime soon, I am in the military and currently operating out of Watertown, NY so yea... middle of no where.
I think I might have to try and replace it I suppose..I am within my thirty days, but unfortunately I didin't have time when I purchased it so I bought it at a wireless kiosk and they are a bit more of a pain to deal with when it comes to exchanging phones... Thanks for the input guys.

Not sure what's going on with your device. I'm either on H / 4G / 3G and on my iPhone 4 I was always on 3G. Completely different location/network than you, but it definitely sounds like your device is doing something strange.

Try toggling airplane mode on/off. For some reason, ics trends to drop to edge if you don't have a super strong signal.

Actually I have been doing this sometimes, it seems to work sometimes, but not always...
Question : Is there even a "3G" signal icon? Or It always just shows "4g" when you are on 3G and up?

Yes, there is an a 4G and 3G icon.
Long shot, but if you dial * # * # 4 6 3 6 # * # * in the keypad and choose Phone Info, what do you see under 'Set preferred network type:'?
Default is WCDMA preferred, I believe.
(Also be careful in here and DO NOT click the Update button.)

Dialer code didn't work for me. I had to use an app called Device Info. Under device information:

But, it doesn't let you change the setting.

don't get an iphone, those things are boring and lame

It also depends on where you live, the area and the service providers radio towers connection to your device specifically

Depends what phone on at&t siii there us No 3g icon. OK there is one in systemui but it us not used. The phone always shows 4g when on 3g umts or hspda or pseudo 4g hspda+. it also shows edge and 4g lte. I am on a micro cell at home which is 3g and it still shows 4g. The way to really check us to go to system then about device then status and see what network mode you are on. Here in the screenshot you can see 4g but also that the phone is using hspda which is normally 3g in any other phone

Just curious... why wouldn't you just get the AT&T version? Wouldn't you have a better user experience? Doesn't the AT&T version have the Exynos processor and superior graphics processor? And you miss out on AT&T's HSPA+?
Can't think of a reason anyone would choose to go with the T-Mobile's one on AT&T's network unless you got it free or something. Even then, I'd sell it and go buy the AT&T version...

Not sure if you guys have hspa+ on telus but if you don't then that's why it says 3g. Telus probably has it show 4g for hspa but the T-Mobile version shows hspa as 3g. This is my theory anyway

Telus has about 70% deployment of 42mbit HSPA+ over it's entire footprint. It should act the same, but I would theorize that it may be based on the frequency that is doing the talking. Most or all of the roms here I believe are a T-Mobile base. If there was one built off the Telus base I think you'd see the opposite happen.
I'm on Telus and my icon reflected 4G before flashing. From what I understand Telus is HSPA+ so 4G would be correct but since flashing I get the 3G icon as mentioned in an earlier post.

4G symbol

is there a 4G symbol next to the signal strength or does it say LTE? mine says 4G but they show LTE on the nokia website. i didnt upgrade my plan so i was wondering if i have LTE enabled or not.
When the "4G" shows, you're connected to HSPA+. When LTE shows, you are in fact on the actual LTE network.

Really? You need a lte dataplan to have lte.
When you upgraded, your provider should have offered the LTE Data Plan upgrade also.
One thing I've noticed is that I'm ALWAYS showing 4G now. I cannot wait to be able to look at the registry, so I can check it. I believe they set normal 3G to show 4G now. I've never gotten HSPA+ here in the house, and now it's ALWAYS on? hmmmm
Still love the phone, but that's a bit misleading...
just looked at my plan on the AT&t website and i have a unlimited LTE plan, but i still dont see the LTE symbol
Closest LTE tower is 40 miles away
Looks like Nokia's doing exactly what Apple did with the 4.1 update.
Even though you're most likely still using 3G speeds, the phone will display 4G.
Misleading. Anything under 6mbps is 3G.
The phone will only show LTE when you're in an LTE city. If you live in the bay area you're in luck. Anywhere else, not so much. (except if you live in the other major markets)
As far as the folks still grandfathered into the unlimited data plan, the good news is since your device is LTE your speeds will not be throttled until you hit 5GBs.
As soon as we have registry access, I'll be changing it to show 3G when it's actually 3G. I don't like being deceived, especially when I'm trying to download something...
I asked about this in the store and got flat out lied to by the representatives. Saying how we were in a 4G area now and my speeds will be improved. Did a bandwith test at home and still was only getting 3.5 down. Coverage map according to at&t is the same at my house and the corporate store 12 miles away.
Yeah, I'm kinda irritated about this too. Even my microcell is being labeled as "4G". When I was at work yesterday, I tried a speed test on 4G and got .8 Mb down. You don't want to know what my upload speed was.

I feel your pain, but why would you ever believe a sales rep about anything other than the amount charged to your credit card? They are salesmen. Next week it might be dishwashers, after that an underground sprinkler system. Though I feel you, you had that coming.
Just as I suspected. They've changed the Registry to show 4G even when it's definately NOT 4G. I am only able to read the Registry, so am still stuck with it, but at least I can confirm they have tried to pull the wool over my eyes as I thought.
How are they getting away with that ? Is that legal ? It must be something to do with Windows Phone, both my symbian Nokias are showing 3.5G symbol for HSPA+, not 4G.

What is the difference between LTE and LTE Advanced ? According to this, even LTE is not 4G, its 3.9G.. and HSPA+ is 3.5G
Oh, here we go.. according to International Mobile Telecommunications this is what you need to market a device as a "4G" .. but I guess no one cares since most iPhones I see are showing 4G and they don't even have the radios for it. I guess this is the "loophole"
"On December 6, 2010, ITU-R recognized that these two technologies, as well as other beyond-3G technologies that do not fulfill the IMT-Advanced requirements, could nevertheless be considered "4G", provided they represent forerunners to IMT-Advanced compliant versions and "a substantial level of improvement in performance and capabilities with respect to the initial third generation systems now deployed"."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IMT-Advanced#Requirements
Actually, I have no problem with them labeling HSPA+ as 4G. That's ok with me. But they've marked UMTS as 4G. Now that seems downright dishonest... It's my guess that was done by AT&T, not Nokia/Microsoft, since it directly benefits them...
yea this does blow
i look to be just on the outskirts of the Baltimore LTE signal for ATT, and would really like to know what sort of connection I actually have, not what they want to con me into thinking. thought I'd assume if I actually did have LTE, it would be saying so, at least hopefully.
it blows - there are three towers within 10 miles of my house, but none of them put off the LTE signal. they seem to have one every exit up and down I95 in the Baltimore/Metro area

Actually, the LTE symbol is set correctly. It will only show when you are actually connected to LTE. The only one I see set incorrectly is the UMTS. It's set to 4G instead of 3G. Unfortunately, UMTS is what I normally have at home. On rare occasion, I can get HSPA+. But it's just nice to know exactly what connection I have in case I'd like to download a larger file.

I spoke to At&t about this. They told me the towers software is upgraded before the hardware. When that happens it will show 4G when you are getting 3G speeds. I may be wrong, but as I understand it 3G and 4G HSPA+ the difference is Fiber between towers instead of cable. Maybe someone can clarify for us if that's true.

That's very possible, but the issue I am having is that they simply changed in the Registry to show UMTS as 4G. That's just dishonest, unless they have some magical way of making UMTS 4G?
I'm sorry I keep going on about this. I'll stop... You won't normally see me complaining about this type of thing on these forums, I'm just a bit frustrated that it's been so blatently thrown in our faces. GSM Nexus speed on AT&T (Austin, TX)

I don't know if this is a question or more of a poll...
I think I'm getting horrible 3G speeds here in Austin, TX. It also seems like I'm being capped. When I have full bars, speedtest always shows around a 3Mbps down and 1 Mbps up transfer speeds. I've tested this in many places around North Austin / Round Rock.
What speeds are others getting?
Could my sim card or data plan need tweaking from AT&T? I ask this because I was previously on a Galaxy Note with LTE and they had to switch me to a LTE plan at the time. Outside where I work, the LTE signal strength is very strong and I've gotten amazing speeds with the Note. But with the Nexus, I get the 3/1 speeds.
Any ideas?

Thank you for helping me.
I'm on a smartphone plan. Which APN settings are you wanting? There are a lot!
I live in Bastrop, like 30 miles east of Austin, and am getting about 2.5-3 down and .4-1.2 up. I was pretty disappointed because I thought I had remembered pulling more on my Captivate(smart phone plan though), too bad it broke. I'm using the MediaNet plan on ATT with AndroidHD Revolution(4.1.1) and Franco r223.

If you're on the smartphone plan, I'm assuming you're using the "phone" apn? Also, you're aware that you can get unlimited hspa with the non smartphone plan formerly known as media net.
Who knows this could be purely speculation but let's say AT&T already has your imei number you could be automatically bumped to the same smartphone data plan if you attempt to use the dumb phone plan.
I am unsure how quick AT&T is figuring this stuff out. I had an AT&T GS2 and switched to a dumb flip phone then bought a GNex, took the sim card out of the dumb one and transplanted into the GNex and boom, unlimited data and texting for $30 a month.
I'm already on an unlimited smartphone plan. I chatted with AT&T support and there are currently no restrictions on my data plan. He also switch IMEI from the Note to the Nexus and moved me from a LTE plan to 3G plan. Data speeds remain the same.
I wonder if anyone with a GSM Nexus in Austin is able to get > 3Mbps...

Try testing with actual downloads instead of speed test sites. My speed test (I'm in northern Colorado) always tells me about 3Mb/s down 1Mb/s up too, but on actual downloads and manual tests, I hit 8-10 Mb/s even in kind of rural areas.
I'm in Indiana and get around 3-4mbit down and 1-1.5mbit up. The fastest ive seen once is 7mbit down.

I remember with the captivate, the speeds would vary widely depending on which part of town I was in. But with the Nexus, it just seems very artificial to hit right around 3 down / 1 up every time. Almost like AT&T is capping it similar to what they did to the captivate. The modem AT&T put on the captivate was throttled for whatever reason but flashing an international modem removed it.

ATT uses QoS to determine which devices on their network receive priority as well. Iphones receive the most for cell phones of course.

Yeah. I had to send my Gnex in for service. Only got to use it for 17 days
Harbor Springs Michigan
Sorry to bring back an old thread, but I am wondering on this myself. I bought my gnex from google play, got it and noticed that the data rates are pretty steady at around 2.5 - 3.5 max down, and .9 - 1.2 up. The gnex has a 21Mbit HSPA+ radio in it, so in theory it should accept whatever AT&T can push to it. However, I came from an Atrix 2, and can vouch for the fact that the Atrix 2 when using the PTA APN on HSPA+ (no LTE for about 200 miles where I'm at) will download consistently between 7 - 9 Mbit... Same server on speediest.net, same APN, same place, the signal is within 1dBm of each other.
Because I have found no base band that can change this, nor any APN setting I am starting to believe that if AT&T gets an IMEI of a phone that it doesnt recognize, they will throttle it.
Any one else have any insight? 3.5Mbit is plenty, but I'd like to get the same speeds as what I consider a lesser device.
If I could find a way to change the IMEI I'd test this theory.
^^^ Suprisingly, Its not att at all. Ask anyone on these forums, samsung has notoriously bad radios. Signal and cell strength just are not that great. And you can you can especially feel the difference coming from a motorola device. They have the strongest radios of all the major oems by far. No one even comes close.

Question about 4G

I live in Denver and this is my first 4G phone but I don't get 4G anywhere when my dad who has a Nexus gets it. Is it because this is an LTE phone? Do I have to wait for LTE towers? I can't use regular 4G in the mean time?
You have to wait for LTE. Denver will be a while. A year +.

I believe the nexus is wimax 4g. Which is ok, but once lte gets some steam and all the switches get turned on it should blow wimax or if the water I'm terms of speed.
And once Sprint turns their old Nextel network to the “new“ Sprint network we should get better service and building penetration.

The Galaxy Nexus is an LTE device. If that phone is getting a 4G signal then your S3 should as well.

Yeah. Both Sprint. His phone is maybe two years old now. The Nexus with the curvy screen. But that might not help because I can't remember if they all have that.

That means he has the old Nexus S 4G, which uses Sprint's now-legacy Wimax standard and calls that 4G. Your GS3 does not handle Wimax, which will be phased out, but rather the new LTE 4G.
But Sprint's LTE network is very new, and has only been launched in a few cities so far. And according to the running schedule at S4GRU.com, Denver is not in line for LTE service for many months.
Mctrollington, im in denver/aurora and might get the sg3 but not sure how sprint service is without wimax as i have nan epic 4g? Are u getting decent speeds on 3g?

I'm in the Denver area also, and just replaced a wimax Epic 4G with the SGS3. Personally I found wimax spotty at best. When it worked I got something like 2 or 3 mb downloads (not that great) but you had to be in just the right spot to get a decent wimax signal.
With the SGS3 using 3G I'm getting between 0.5 and 1.5 mb downloads (much better than I used to with the Epic), which is certainly tolerable unless you plan on downloading movies or doing heavy tethering. Again, it depends on the what cell site you are connected to and how many bars you have. Sprint's Network Vision upgrades are improving the data capacity of their 3G sites, and that is going on right now even before the LTE install.
I would say if 4G data speeds are important to you, try to hang on as long as you can before you upgrade. In my case my old Epic was getting pretty beat up and the SGS3 kept calling my name. I don't miss wimax one bit.
Oh, and the stock ICS experience with the SGS3 is WAY smoother and more polished than any ICS rom on the Epic ever was. Nothing like having gobs of ram and 16 megs of app storage built in to make things hum right along.

That's good advice in general. I'm in Austin, and I happen to get decent Wimax coverage in my office. So I held on with my Epic for a bit before biting on the GS3 recently.
But LTE service is supposed to come here pretty soon, and it seemed like fun to search for service and test it even before launch. For an ordinary user with good Wimax service today and no early prospect of LTE, I would not recommend the GS3 today unless you also choose to jump carriers. (Which raises other issues of price, data caps, etc.)

That's basically what's up in the Denver Area. Downtown gets a little faster. I am not often in Aurora but I think it's similar.
When I'm in Littleton I get absolutely no Sprint Network. It's all roaming.
I typically use WiFi. My 3G use is for tweeting, RTD navigation and a little Facebook. I have no problems or complaints with those.

According to this video google has enabled ipv6 for android 4.0 devices, i just dont know forsure if the sgs2 Sprint has support for it. Anyways check out this video it has to also have more valid packets in the traceroutes as well. And here is a link to get you going with sprints IPV6 i guess you have to call them to get it switched over https://www.sprint.net/index.php?p=ipv6 Sprint tec support has no idea what to do with switching im gonna try another tec LOL if you visit that link on your mobile phone you will see it at the top if your on a IPV4 or IPV6 and my phone says IPV4
here is explanation of ipv6 on utube.

###update##
Tmobile got this update with there ICS 4.0.4 And i just got off the phone with sprint mobile broad band tec and he said that our phones should be on a IPV6 as well with the ICS update and to call this number 18007267864 if your phone is running on ipv4, its samsungs tec support line and theyre able to resolve the issue, im checking into now........LOL just as i suspected well the only thing we can do is have you ship the phone to us.....bla bla........only or repair center would have those kinds of answers to your questions......no you cant talk to them theyre our secret phone scientists, we dont offer them to the public......LOL...
What's your location?
At home i get 4 bars, which is a beast connection to me nd when i'm at school(Jobcorps) i get 1 bar and i can barely get on facebook
i get 4/5 bars at my location. Ive always had good signal throughout NorthCounty SD until now. IDK if i messed up some deep internel setting or maybe fried my antenna because sprint says theres no network issues in the area so hope i can get some help.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk
what ive also noticed is when i get a solid connection on 3g it will run all day and night i just do my little calberating signal dance and the bad is if i switch to wifi and then back to 3g my 3g will start acting the way the logcat logged phone responding in previous post.

I also live in north county. My signal is never really excellent, but I have horrid 3g speeds in most places. Especially in Esco at my house. But when I was at Palomar my speeds weren't bad. My wife has an evo that seems to load things faster than me.

Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk
Its likely just a network thing. Same this happened last Spring when I was in Austin. They were doing some network updates and 3g was plain garbage for a few months in areas where it was previously good, worse in others. Then all of a sudden it was fine again. Still Sprint though lol
I guess you could try other modems. Have you done this yet.
The bars are no indication of Sprint 3g reception. The bars indicate VOICE reception. You'll need to go to settings and look at the signal strength in dbm in order to check it out.
Also ... Sprints network is almost universally slow (sub 100 kbps) except in low demand areas, areas where there has been band aid fixes (extra T1 lines), and areas where network vision upgrades have been completed (1.5mbps -> 2.0 mbps on average).
As stated, if you're in an area undergoing NV upgrades then 3g and reception can be wonky as they fix up the towers.
I agree, sprint is slow. I don't think its any specific device/radio/rom. Slow is slow. Even if a speed test app says I'm getting blazing fast 3G, I still can't browse fast worth a damn.

lol, the iphone invasion. maybe these logcats can help find what can be added to a build.prop code so jumping between wifi and 3g wont kill the 3g data transfers, idk, what i do know is that this has to mean something.

I found out another way to tinker it and it seems to be working so far ive done it a couple times now. I had it on wifi and then switched to 3g. i couldnt get a horrible signal even. all i did to fix was turn on airplane mode then rebooted phone waited until my phone loaded up and then turned airplane mode back off and now all of a sudden 3g is good. Ive tried this twice and it works im gonna try it maybe 10 more times just to see if thats it. Please if you try post your results as well

lol. if you have to try that many times your phones either messed up or its sprint.. but your theory doesnt have any hard evidence besides you have airplane mode on and reboot n turn it off.. i can only pull 1x speeds with full bars.. definately cant watch any video and like your name.. PR is a NV market and deployment is going pretty rapidly. LTE is popping up in a lot of places and fiber/micro back haul has dramatically increased 3g speeds. Won't be suprised if they finished upgrading the entire market by early next year.
Anyways...this is what sprints 3g network will look like once they finish the NV upgrades... not the sub 100 kbps connections we get ...
Updated Original Post with some more Info on ipv6 and linked video to googles june 6 2012 open ipv6 deployment and explaination about pastebin links.
Makes me wonder if sprint and samsung are gonna be on the same page, maybe it will show in the Official JB update
thanks again

That is great and what I expected by now for 3g speeds in major USA cities. The best 3g I have seen is about 1.25Mbps
Ive had my issues with this phone also. The questions i had was 1 Sprint? 2 The phones radio 3 rom/kernal/modem. I live in a real good sprint area. i usually run 1-2.5mb down. I do notice that all 3 epic touches ive owned had wacky radios. Signal goes up and down. That is part of problem. Ive had some roms/ kernals that WOULD not have any good speed at all. I was just on a rom and source kernal and Speeds were terrible. At the same same location i flashed back to stock and used kies to update to bone stock fi27 and poof 2mbps down where it was 200k max. Try stock and see. Also the speed test app IS a joke. its awful. Try this test it seems to be very reliable. http://i.dslr.net/tinyspeedtest.html The screen shot below is in my house for some reason i get very low signal but outside its 4/6 bars. Still 1.4 mb down! I blame the ****ty at&t EDGE tower 100 ft from house.
I notice the fi27 modem goes to sleep and has trouble waking up. Not an issue with fh13 which is neck n neck tie for best modem with el29.
