Just got my GS3. I have a few questions. - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

1) why does the GPS voice switch between a peppy young girl and another woman that sounds like she's been sniffing doggy downers?
2) Why does it sometimes read my texts out loud?
3) On the instant calling (the thing where you put the phone up to your head and it automatically called the person on the screen) mine always calls 1 of my contacts. I hang up then it starts to call the contact I wanted to call originally. Anyone else have this issue?
4) S Voice search. Why does it use a special google search with advertisements? what BS is that?

1- parts of navigation use a different voice than the default that u normally hear... don't really know why. Im guessing the lady on downers is the robotic sounding default one... the other sounds like a human recording which i guess they didn't record all of the possible directions hence the two different voices
2- that sounds like a setting u may have enabled in the accessibility section of settings...
3- cant comment cuz i dont use that fetaure
4- google is the dominant search engine... the os is designed by google... as for ads thats part of owning a mobile phone unless u root and block them

about the text reading out loud. Make sure you don't have talk back checked.

Thats almost definitely it. It a setting you can change in Google voice.
Sounds like you have Google Voice.
I believe this has something to do with Google Voice's Call Presentation settings. Turning it off makes it so that the first phone to pick up an incoming call, will automatically answer it.
I've uninstalled it before and relized that stock voicemail blows donkey...but I will try it again.

You can either set it up for just voicemail or you can use the full integration of Google Voice. The full integration enables you to screen calls, block unwanted phone numbers from calling you, handling your SMS traffic and a bunch of other things.
It sounds like you have the full integration enabled.
Yup, definitely Google voice. Log into you account via a computer and go through the settings and you'll see it there.
Like everyone else said gvoice change it online

Settings/calls/voice screening •OFF
Its should be off by default. It took me forever to figure that out.
Edit: Yea I ment its on by default, but should be set off and to switch it on if you wanted that feature.

Nope. It's set to on by default--which, I think, is a bad idea. Most people automatically hang up when they get anything resembling a voicemail so I ended up having to call people back because of that feature. I quickly turned it off. Voice is otherwise great, though.
Yes I noticed I get alot of 3 sec voice mails. Thx all

3 way calls

Anyone know how to make a three way call then when you have completed it hang up on only one party? I cannot figure it out. I have to call a line where people listen to message then I hang up on the message and continue talking with the customer and i cannot figure out how to do it on the Gnex! Thanks
I'd love to know this too. It would be helpful for me when I try to conference in another person but it to voicemail. I have to end the whole call or the second parties voicemail will record the conversation.
really the best phone on vzw doesnt have this capability!
When you are on your call screen on an active call..press the person+ icon to add a second call. What it does is place the first call on hold and when the second call answers there is an option to "merge" calls.

Thanks but that doesn't answer the question. The question is once the calls are merged how do you drop one of the parties from the call?

I don't know if it's different on the CDMA version (is there an inherent network difference?). On the GSM version when you're in a conference there is a "Manage Conference" button. You press that and each party appears in a list, with a green "split" icon on the right side. Press split and you are now only talking with one party with the other on hold. There's a circle-arrows icon that lets you switch which party you're speaking to, and the red end-call bar will hang up only on the one you're currently talking to.

The Verizon version also has the circle arrows icon (referring to post above) when you are in that Merged mode. You might want to check those out and do some test calls.
Edit: However sadly I don't see a Manage Conference option.

I dont see a manage conference button either! thank you for the screen shots and explanation I wish the verizon one had it but i do not see that option. anyone else?
Unfortunately, you can't hang up on just one party in a 3-way call over CDMA... it's a limitation of the technology. You have to ask the party you want to disconnect to hang up.

I always thought I remember being able to do this on my BB and iphone when I was on AT&T. Now I'm on Verizon so I guess that explains it.

Sprint and Google voice

I have been restoring a titanium backup of voice for a long time but being the happy new owner of a GNex I Installed fresh from the market. It didnt ask about the google voice number integration (the part we all skipped) Did I miss something or have they changed something. I also remember it asking about texting but now it only asks about calls. Can someone confirm. Thanks

I'm not sure what your question is? Do you or don't you want the integration? Are you having problems making or receiving calls or texts?

I dont want integration I just remember having to skip that part and now it no longer asks. I just wanted to verify with someone who has set it up recently that they removed that part. also if someone who JUST uses it for voicemail only would check their settings within voice > sync and notifications > it says receive texts via google voice app (which was another step which was missing I didnt choose that option upon expanding it the choices are that and via the messaging app. I do not want google voice to do anything but voicemails and the new app dosent appear to have the previous steps to deselect those options. I was just looking for verification
Thanks
also on the sprint GNex I recieve a flashing led upon rec of a voicemail but do not have the flashing led with a new text can someone verify this as well Thanks agn
Edit
I chaged the setting to receive texts via the messaging app and now i get a flashing indicator weird
U can select it to receive text also but it doesn't automatically integrate....have to go into settings and check it....

Google now doesnt call local businesses

since the update to jellybean i have not been able to call local places by saying ie call gamestop and it calls the closest gamestop to me. it either pulls up random contacts or says no contact found and leaves a search bar for videos about the said business. anyone else with this prob? or a fix?
i have the same issue.. my guess is we have to wait for google.
If I say call game stop or any business it trays to call a contact in my phone that sounds nothing gets like what I say lol

Same problem here. The old google search was great for calling local businesses. Has Google addressed this issue?
Thank Apple and their idiotic patents for that. Google had to strip a few features to try and stop a sales ban from happening in the future.
Don't worry if Google comes out on top in the end it may be added back.

I do not believe this is why it doesn't work. If I clear the data on Google search (or reinstall the app) the voice search will work just like before. I say call "business" and it finds the nearest and dials it. After a few hours it will stop working and only pull up my contacts. If it was a feature removed then it wouldn't work at all. It definitely appears to be a bug. Very frustrating bug.
Instead of saying call "business".. say "business" phone number and it pulls up the closest numbers In Your area..
I use this to call dominos about 2 to 3 times a week.. lol
I say "dominoes phone number" and it pulls up the 3 closest to me..
Hope this helps..

Phone app settings

I'm trying to set up Google Voice as my voicemail, but it only lists my carrier as the only option. I've searched around a bit and have seen people say to go to the settings in the Phone app and enter my GV in call forwarding.
Problem is I don't see that option on the VZW variant.
Can anyone tell me if I missing something?

I have the same problem and I can't find anyone who's experienced this besides you . I feel your pain . I was thinking since there update to gv they took this option out.
Try this.

Google Voice will be your voice mail if you simply set the call forwarding correctly to your Google voice number. You can set your call forwarding thru the My Verizon app, online on Verizon Wireless website, or thru your dialer app by dialing *72 plus your Google voice number then press the call button. If you use the last method, you'll hear a couple beeps then it will hang up... And that's it!
Once you do this, your GV number is your voice mail. Further, you can change your voicemail speed dial setting if you choose (when you long press the number 1 on your dialer) by going into the phone settings shown in my attached pics.
Lastly, the "my carrier" setting is really a non issue. I've been using GV for voicemail for years now. On verizon phones I'm pretty sure the ability to technically change that setting to something else has been gone for awhile. It really doesn't matter what that setting says.... It only matters what you have you line call forwarding set to. The label isn't important.
