Just got my Sg3... - T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy SIII

And I've backed up me imei (the simple method), and downloaded(not installed) everything needed to root and install custom recovery, is there anything I'm missing or you'd suggest I do before continuing on?
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app

That's about it. I used the qcom toolbox too root. It's stickied in the dev section. It takes like 5 min to do. do a android backup after you root so you can easily go back to the stock rooted Rom if you want.

Good luck and have fun!! Just be careful and follow directions to a T! I am pretty new at this and bricked my first phone a couple of weeks ago by not paying attention. If you follow the directions on this board you will be fine.

I'm helping a buddy. Any suggestions to stockish or stock kernal to use? And it has root already then correct?
PS I'm fine with Odin and flashing just the rooting directions from the wiki are not that specific for Android version / bb method specifics .
Thanks

(this is the first video of qbking for ei22/el30)
No I'm meaning you need a stock modded for cwm to stick other wise it won't and once you odined the kernel you'll need to odin the cwm and you be fine look for the "epic gb kernel source with keyfix" by mkasick and scroll down to find the GB 3 a.tar which is the kernel and if you go to android development for the epic and go to the stickies or the "top" post find the [CWM] ClockworkMod 5.0.2.7 officially supported. Find the .tar to download and just follow the instructions. If you need a video search qbking77 on youtube he's very reliable

I don't care about cwm and all though. There isn't a one click root. Bat for 2.3.6 EL30?
What does recovery have to do with root. I'm my experience root comes b4 recovery.
Edit. For it nvm. Thanks guys will let u know how it goes tomorrow

New to gs2

Sup guys, just got my gs2 and almost let my buddy do it but he messed his up pretty good. What's a good way to root and flash roms on this phone and what's a good stable rom? Thanks guys for helping out.
Sent from my LG-P999 using xda premium
Check the stickies, in the general section. But basically if you're on 2.3.5 use one click then rom manager.
If on 2.3.6 use odin and flash cwm then use cwm to flash a rom

Once you have clockwork mod recovery on your sgs2 you can install custom roms, and most importantly, make backups. this should be your 1st order of business.

Definitely read the stickies/FAQs.
This is what I used to root my SG2 last week:

As far as ROMs, I'm currently on Darkside 2.3 and it's perfect for me.
Edit:
After rooting and before flashing the ROM, I forgot to mention that I followed this to install CWM:

if there was a device profile for you guys id compile nightlies for ya, however im not gunna take each nightly and edit it after compiling for use with us cellular, sorry i dont have that kind of time. if you had a device profile like this https://github.com/EpicCM/android_device_samsung_epic4gtouch then i could merge it in and add it to my build script, would take it maybe 20 mins extra to make it :/
my suggestion is to get a modified device repo going and then you could have a from source build
Downloading 6/19... so I just flash this straight over 6/18 from recovery? Should I wipe everything beforehand????
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
Looks like the nightly is done uploading. ~35 downloads while the md5 was still changing (good half a dozen were mine) ;-)
Sorry if I ask this....might be common knowledge, oh well. I'm on 6-18 nightly atm, if I want to update to 6-19 (I'm already using goo.im from the play store, and already dl the rom) can I just use the included safe CW from 6-18 to flash? If so, After flashing do I need to do anything else? Thanks again for the help..

Welcome to rooting.. so if im getting your question right you want to go to a new ROM possibly.. and youre on AOSP..well since you are new I would suggest using a one click odin (your choice ) and start from there since you are on A JB build ...
-TeaM VeNuM Like A Boss
+1 for one click of your choice, make sure you pick a full wipe one though.
Tappin' Typin'
I would flash over the EL26 CWM kernel, first it just makes it easier for you, and is a very safe recovery to flash from.
Thank you guys, actually I just wanted to know what to do when I decide to explore others roms but for now I really like this one so Ima stay here a while I didnt knew rooting would be this cool but new roms and with apps like setcpu this is very nice, thanks again.

Oh I see well all is your choice on the path..one major thing I suggest is when moving from ROM to ROM back up your apps ..(non system apps)and make sure to wipe on a safe recoveries (Kuban kernel, agats, el26) problems can arise from dirty installs
I also suggest ROM toolbox from the play store its a great tool that basically does everything

[Q] Upgrading to CyanogenMod Snapshot

Hello, I've worked with custom roms and such before, but only stable things. I installed the Cyanogenmod 10.1 nightly builds, and I've been updating them every day, through TWRP by just flashing the rom, and gapps. A snapshot was just released, and I was wondering if I just do it the same method, or do I have to do the wipe system and all that when you first install a brand new rom. I'm pretty sure I do it the same way, but I just want to make sure there isn't have to be anything else. Better safe than sorry.
Oh my why are you going through all that trouble CyanogenMod has a built in updater all you do is go to about and then CyanogenMod update I believe it will ask you the frequency to check for updates. Make sure you change the options to nightly builds. The phone will notify you when there's an update, after downloading the phone will update itself and all your apps will still be there so you won't need to flash G apps each time.
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda app-developers app
The process to do this is called a "dirty flash" because you are flashing over what you already have without wiping again. Usually if its an updated version of the same rom you dont need to rewipe everything
However, if you come upon this in some other rom (you're updating to a new version of it), make sure that the OP's instructions dont mention a full flash, because the nature of some big updates WILL require you to do a full wipe and then flash
But for this specific case, just do what the guy above me said

It is a more stable build designation. Still not an official release. Think of it as a monthly nightly!
