Nexus 7 tablet Photography - Nexus 7 Themes and Apps

Taking pictures with the Nexus 7 front facing camera isn't easy if you want to point the camera away from you.
Nonetheless I thought I'd try and see what it would do.
The hardest part was trying to figure out if your finger was correctly placed on the Camera app button.
Even if you have everything else where you want it, finding the tiger position, without any feedback, can be frustrating.
The Camera app is for both still photography and video, though, here I only tried the former.
You'd undoubtedly need some kind of tablet support to do video and that probably would help for still photograph too.
You can make photo adjustments after you take the picture, but they're pretty limited, more like the Instagram variety.
Deleting the bad ones is easy.
I emailed the four you see here to myself and processed them in Adobe Photoshop CS6, mostly adjusting the mid-tones and shadows and highlights. Then I cropped them and uploaded them so they weren't so big.
Here are the results:

Yes, you can do photography with the Nexus 7, but there's a lot of trial and error and the app's aren't very sophisticated.
With phone and tablet technology coming together, there's definitely a ray of hope for the future.

Really really nice.

why?
why take pictures with a tablet? With all respects, these pictures look terrible. The camera is good for skype and such. Sometimes it is better to let it be...

I think its cool you took them just to show what the potential is and what is and isn't possible with the 7.
There are some applications where using the N7 for a tripod cam and writing or using a custom camera app just for time lapse to match the photographers parameters makes sense due to the cheap price point and processing power.

Tell me you're joking, these are quite frankly awful - noisy, low-res monstrosities.
As previously mentioned, leave it be. There's a reason the N7 doesn't come with a camera app. Moreover taking photos with a tablet is an undignified task, not to mention back-to-front.

Do yourself a favor, use your smartphones 5-8MP camera.

Geezus, look at all the pro photography artists come out of the woodwork (pun intended). You're slamming the OP as if he is planning to enter the photos into an exhibition and is going to go across the country touring with his N7 photography suite.
All he was doing was messing around and showing what can be done. The pictures are not nearly as bad as you drama queens are making them out to be. LOL Monstrosities? Seriously? Take a pill man...

I slammed the OP? Did I say monstrosity? I just told him not to waste his time and use his smartphones camera, there really isn't any point in wasting time trying to make N7 FFC pics remotely decent.

The people saying that the pictures are terrible are total idiots. Photography is not about getting the sharpest or highest resolution picture. I have a very good DSLR camera but I still like taking pictures with the N7. Why? Because it forces you to think outside the box, which helps you become a better photographer.
And like previously stated, it's not like OP is going to enter these in a contest or something. He's merely showing what the camera can do.

People argue about the stupidest things...
The Nexus 7 has a camera. It works. Is it great, no, but who cares.
If I am somewhere and only have my tablet with me and need to snap a shot of something (picture is worth a thousand words).... I not going to run back to my desk to get by Phone/Camera if it will work good enough to get what I need. Its just a picture.
I rarely take pictures that I plan on posting because they are really good images, it is normally because it shows something, serial number, cable setup, location of devices etc...
BTW... I did some playing around with the camera as well to see what I could do with it.
Not sure how this is different experimenting with other functions of the device to see what the limits are and you can get it to do (GPS anyone?).
Maybe we should start a Nexus 7 Photo Contest...

Do yourself a favor and get DSLR controller, and shoot with a real DSLR camera. 5-8MP out of a tiny pin prick lens isn't that much better than the Nexus 7 camera, truly.

Sometimes you may not have your phone, or your camera and you see something you never wanna forget. So you make do with whats there for you to use. Great pics honestly. I do photography for a living and artist will sometimes take the low end junky stuff and turn it into art like vintage art. so kudos to you sir who started this thread alot better then what i could do.

How do we better our camera?

Is it just a horrible camera or is it something that can be fixed through software? I have 7 friends with evo's we will all put up $50/ea or so some im sure will pay more to the developers paypal account if we can get better picture quality on the front and back cameras.... Please we are begging ANYONE who can do it i will pay the bounty to.
You would probably have better luck spending that $50 on photography lessons or buying some decent post-processing software. Firmware isn't going to make you or your friends any better photgraphers.
I used my Evo while on vacation, and a good quality point and shoot. Both cameras took equally great pictures. Try to limit the use of the zoom, as it doesn't turn out well.

as a former pro photographer. (not tooting my horn, just explaining)
QUALITY comes from both the photographer and the camera. More megapixels doesnt mean better QUALITY. it means larger IMAGE. you want better QUALITY get a larger SENSOR, notice the words in caps here people.
Some facts about the camera, from what i can tell by use, not spec sheets, if someone wants to provide one that'd be great, i didnt find one, but i didnt look too hard.
Its a telezoom lens, meaning it has focal length (mm #) greater (AFAICT) than that of the human eye. minimum focus distance is about 6-8" and its got a digital zoom (bleh).
Digital zoom for those that dont know will crop out part of the photo and enlarge the rest, digitally. Which is fine up to a point, after this point you end up with pixelation and bleh images.
As for taking better pictures, go read some rules on composition (the rule of thirds) and if its your cup of tea color scheme and color interaction.
Ive taken some nice photos with this camera. Just a nice rooftop with some desaturation. BAM

Is there a good online resource for learning to set white balance adjustments and those sort of things on a camera? I've always had a fascination with photography, but I admit I use P&S and automatic settings because I have no idea what those settings do...

the best resource to learn how to change those settings honestly is your camera manual. the next best resource to learn how they work, is to play with them.
a good book will teach you the basics. The Photographers handbook 3rd Edition is the book i used and it will teach you a ton about manual settings and basic SLR/dSLR usage. not to mention film development and i think printing technique.
I leave the iso on 100 all the time (less grain), and toggle back and forth on WB, daytime for outside pics and auto for everything else.
i have no problem with the camera i toy with the settings and take some really good photos with my camera !
not sure what people are *****ing about
Also maybe a higher class memory card
I'll have to agree with the OP. The camera on the Evo is really a let down. They got us excited with the 8 megapixel hype but it really was a let down. Same thing with the camera on the Hero. Honestly I think my Pre takes clearer pictures. It's not even in the same class as the iPhone 4 and this is coming from somebody who has bashed it since day one, but after looking at some pics and videos taken from my friend's iPhone I was literally blown away. Couldn't believe they came from a phone and not a expensive digital camera. HTC dropped the ball in that department.
Iphone has a better screen, have y'all tried cm roms, his camera app is way better than sense

No way, lower your ISO to 100 (top config button, scroll down). Clean is day.
The camera is that bad? Really?
Here's a pic I took at Niagara Falls:
http://tinypic.com/m/be99qq/3
I'm FAR from a photographer, but some of the pics I get are at least as good as an entry level point and shoot - which is more than I expected out of it.
Some tips I have:
-make sure you are holding the phone still so the autofocus can adjust properly.
-after you hit the shutter button, make sure you hold still until it's really done taking the picture otherwise you may blur the image

How good is the camera?

I am thinking of getting a Defy as a free upgrade to my Hero. Reviews of camera seem mixed but general impression is that it's not brilliant, especially in low light. Interested to hear the views of people here.
You can compare the photos from defy with various other phones, including N8, iPhone4 on gsmarena site. Just click on some of the latest reviews, doesnt matter which phone, and go to the camera section of the review. There is a photo compare tool.
Thanks. That was helpful but I am more interested in the low light performance.

I was pleasantly suprised with the quality of the flash. up to a metre or 2 it is very effective and doesn't wash out the photo like some others. All in all I am pleases with the camera - thats just my opinion though.
Thanks. I am almost certainly going to get one. The nagging doubt in the back of my mind is the speaker issue. Difficult to know how much of a problem it really is. People who don't have the issue (obviously) don't post to forums
None of those Cell Cameras are that cool in low light compared to a DSLR. What would really help is a camera app that writes out a dng file so that one can properly posprocess this in say Lightroom/Photoshop/Noiseware.
Just for completeness shake, the camera module seems to be a MT9PT012 ...

IMHO - flash and camera is pretty awful. Here's a shot with flash, I even gave it +20 brightness in Gimp:

Then again, I might be spoiled by these babies:
Ironically - That was shot with my HTC Desire
I guess the Defy's camera is just below cell-phone average. It should't be your only camera, but for "Hey this looks fun!" shots it'll do fine.
I really like my defy but, honestly, the camera is not the best part.
Also the display looks not so brilliant as the desire's one.
I'm not saying they're bad, just they're not wonderful, but considering defy's price it's absolutely fair.
Well, one thing none of the others can do is H2Oing it. I just filmed in water, definitely better results than any other phone attempting the same
I'm using the Camera360 app. There is a filter called "Effect enhancement". If i you this one, the pictures look better - the ones taken in short range. Ok, they do look a bit "artifical", but for me its ok. There is a "free" version of that app for trying out...
The Defy is not the first Android i bought, but it will be the first Android, which will not be sold again. I really like this phone...
Maybe there will be some kind of camera-optimization. Until then, i will take my digi-cam for "more important" pictures to make.
Best regards
Stefan
Here is sample picture, resized, with flash and taken with camera360 app.
This was taken with a Galaxy S
This was taken with the Defy, different day so not a direct comparison. The weather was worse and it was cloudy. Hope this give you an idea of comparison though.
Defy on macro with flash
Defy with macro no flash. Shows good detail.
thanks
Photos aren't that great but they're not awful. I do find that the built in editing (kodak perfect touch) does an excellent job though. The macro mode and color reproduction aren't as good as my vibrant. But overall im satisfied.

What about Videos in 720p ?
Anyone succeed to take videos in 720p with Froyo 2.2 ?
have you tryed the kodak perfect touch option?? It's excelent! for night pics, and remember to use the "night" mode in dark places
imo, It's good++
I took pictures with it for the first time today. I did not like the quality of the pictures. My first impressions:
Pros: The LED flash is bright and puts my old BB Curve to shame. You could use it to blind a night time attacker if you could instantly turn it on with an external button.
The interface to take pictures is pretty good and easy to use.
Cons:
-Colors are muddy and off color even when shot outdoors.
-Colors with the flash are not automatically corrected and show up with the blue/white color cast of the LED flash.
-Color space compression is very noticable with banding visible under various conditions.
-Slow to take a picture because it does not focus until you click the onscreen button to take the photo.
I thought video was better on balance than the camera but it is rather poor in low light (as expected). I hope that I will learn to get better results with it after more testing but I'm glad it's not a primary reason for me to own the Defy.
-felipe
What about 720p videos?
Could someone try it?with froyo??
I found the camera pretty good in comparaison of my old phone.
But there's a hudge miss on the native camera app: you cannot change the JPG compression and by default it's very very compressed! Some have their 5Mpxl pictures that takes around 300kB (it should be 1.5MB at least!).
Maybe if someone know a way to change this settings it would be nice for improving the quality of the final picture
I really like the Vignette app for the camera, it's old school styles go rather well with the "performance" of the camear

I took these in Zürich last week. These are straight off the phone, no compression, no editing.

No offense, but those are terrible pictures.
They actually don't look that bad when they're not at full size.
Yea umm, the next posters need to resize their pics before posting otherwise potential GNex owners might get the wrong impression.
Sorry, but I tend to agree with the other posters. Those pics are a horrible representation of the camera. I've taken much better night shots with the GNex, and I also have better night shots in Zurich that I took with my EVO a year or two ago. Awesome city though. The train station during Oktoberfest was very cool.
Edit - sorry, didn't mean to be so negative. I have to say that I've taken plenty bad pictures with dedicated point-and-shoots. I'm not really a photog type, but I have friends that are so I can honestly say nothing short of a nice DSLR and plenty of time playing with exposures, etc is going to get you a nice night shot. Even a very nice camera will take bad shots. Starting to ramble...that second pic is walking straight out of the train station though, right? Wow, it's very crowded. Anything in particular going on that night?
Are these any better?
Better, yes. Just got mine and I haven't taken a picture yet, but I'll miss the stellar camera in the SGS II. This is almost the same module as the Nexus S, correct? Perfectly usable camera in decent light.
After seeing shots from the GSII and owning a iPhone 4S... This thread saddens me. :/

to be brutally honest, the nexus camera doesn't cut it. The SGS2 and iPhone 4 camera is much much better. I remember when I first got the SGS2 the camera was very poor, and it improved drastically with firmware updates, so I am hoping for the same with the Nexus.

[APP] Rando

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ustwo.rando
I think this is a pretty neat app. The basic premise is you take a photo (presumably of something cool or pretty) and it gets sent to a random person. In return, you get a random person's photo from somewhere in the world. I've gotten photos from Paraguay, Russia, Oman, and all over the States.
There are some annoyances. Primarily among them, (for me) is that they have a touch to focus feature, but then when you click capture IT REFOCUSES. Almost always poorly. I'm sure it'll be smoothed out soon though, the app is only a month or two old.
And I may just have my mind in the gutter, but my first thought was "I'm going to get a lot of pictures of genitalia". Not the case! First of all, there's a nice flagging feature. That I haven't had to use yet! I don't know if there's a screening algorithm, or if they just aggressively block flagged users. Or if smartphone users are just pretty darn classy. Mhm. I like that last one.

... I don't know if it's that much better. I think the app relies on the auto focus that LG implemented in the camera code. It doesn't do anything but call the camera.takepicture() method. Maybe placebo effect, or the fact that the picture is in a smaller circle?

Lol Blunt.
I installed the newer Motorola camera from my Droid Mini onto the M. Everything seems to work for the most part, except the screen gets jumpy and glitchy when scrolling the settings wheel. It takes photos much faster. It was taking several seconds to take a photo with the original camera, so the newer Moto camera is a huge improvement in that regard. I don't know if the image quality is any better or worse, looked kind of bad to me, but I thought the photos looked kind of bad with the original camera ever since KK anyway. Might just be because indoors and not enough light though.
hey i am thinking about getting this

The Razr M's camera/sensor is terrible. My pictures come out foggy, grainy, and ever since KitKat...pinkish. Using Moto's new camera or Google's camera, my pictures don't come out with the pinkish hue, but there still terrible. My Galaxy Nexus takes better photos, and that camera sucks... bad.
Not as good as my iPhone 4S or Droid Mini. I just took a few indoor pics and they look out-of-focus and grainy. I don't know if they would look better with the stock camera since the new Moto camera replaces the stock camera app so I can't try both easily. Stock camera was just too damn slow to be useful. Moment is gone before it takes the pic. I feel like once upon a Jellybean, the phone used to take decent pics, and stock camera wasn't nearly as slow. I have a few pics that came out pretty decent that I was sure were taken on the M long ago, on JB. Granted, they were all outdoor pics.
I think even on KK, the pics it takes might be better than the Kyocera Hydro Elite I had (surprisingly bad for 8MP) and way better pics than the LG Lucid 2 which had the worst 5MP camera considering its speed/performance level was close to the RAZR M. Usually you only see cameras as bad as the Lucid 2's on cheap plastic single-core prepaid phones that come in blister packs.
thank u all very much i pressed it
Well after bith of your opinions and the revuews i read i think i will be looking else were for a phone fot work i need a cheap phone with a decent camera oh well thinking aout a used s3 or a used 4s thanks again guys if i could just strech for a used droid dna hope to see you all in anither forum
Hmmm, well, I guess the pics are not TOO awful.
Took a couple pics of my car with the newer Moto camera (don't make fun, it's an antique, lol). One in the morning, one in the afternoon. I think old camera probably took better pics, but was unbearably slow and the newer one takes pics instantly. I had HDR and spot focus turned off.

I pulled it from a Moto X system dump. This isn't the latest version, but it works well. The latest version is very glitchy on our phone.
