Widespread issues of i747 model of s3? - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

Hi,
I have been thinking about getting the i747 model of the S3? is there any widespread issues I should no about before I make the leap?

Screen breaks easy :/
Phone gets hot quite often...
Make sure you like the size you get used to it. I jumped from 3" to 4.8"
Overall it is the best phone on the market and regardless it's a good decision.

i've been deciding whether i should get a international or us version... The only thing that stands out for me with the US version is 2GB of ram..

US, versions are way better unless you play video games, you wont want the internation phone, also over heating isnt a issue at all i have mine overclock to 1800mhz and the phone wont go pass 40c at all. And with the US version you get lte which is a pretty big deal to me

Played everything i have thrown at it flawlessly, and the extra ram is nice, not sure if the int. version is still having redraw issues, but I never had on the US.

My carrier doesnt support LTE haha. A big decision factor on both for me is dev support , the us versions dont get nearly as much dev support as the international ones.

Brushed Metal ring cracks easily, look closely you will see the cracks

"I feel like I'm gonna break this thing..."
The screen is beautiful, the phone is jam-packed with features and hardware, and if you stay stock Samsung's TouchWiz has some pretty cool features.
I'd get the US over the International for your network's flavor of 4G + 2GB Ram, unless you can acquire a Korean handset. Quad-core with 2GB of RAM and I believe 800 MHz LTE support which is currently useless but I believe Sprint has their eyes on that spectrum for future expansion.
Oh, and it's really thin, has a huge screen, almost no bezel, comes in sweet colors (like red) and I recommend a case.

My carrier does not support 4G LTE yet btw. Would you still choose the US version in that case?

If your carriers don't support LTE, then you can just get international version.

I too am trying to decide if I should upgrade from my skurocket or not. What more does the s3 offer....art version u.s.

Hey guys I'm not developer level or anything but here are a few things from my last almost three days with the phone
Good:
Great support.
Easy to root.
Safe failsafe comes with the phone (Odin). It's samsung not motorola so the bootstrapper isn't locked and is 'made to mod'
Great battery- got one day+ out of it doing heavy stuff, syncing high quality audacity files over 4g
Sick screen, processor
Lots of roms and kernels
Bad: A lot of the roms just came out. Aside from AKOP and Nostalgia (stock withouth the bloat) people are having different issues from wifi drain, 4g lte not working, (look up my name to see some of these)
For me- the form factor. The phone is VERY thin VERY wide and PRETTY LONG.. It's hard to grip if you use it to say play music while running. Basically you'd have a stronger grip if you gripped the phone with the screen facing the palm of your hands. The back end is almost frictionless. Again easy to fall, easy to slip out of pocket/bookbag, will bounce around in your pocket and not feel it when it falls out of your bag etc.. It will take getting used to.
Another thing that showed poor thought in the physical design. I have a white phone and didn't notice the menu and back buttons because...they too are white. Meld in perfectly.
Charge time- Charge Could take 3+ hours using a 'fast' high AMp charger off of Amazon. I will try with Samsung's stock charger.
A ton of roms, different version of the phone, and mods keep shooting down threads about battery life etc. I say shut off airplane mode and leave on wifi to see which kernels/governors give best battery life. There's so much customizability that its sort of a bad things.
I haven't played around with it on my JB Rom but on ICS you can't transfer the apps and music files from say spotify to your external card. No matter how quickly internal memory is accessed, for backup and movability purposes that is a huge no no for me and a lot of other people.
Not so much with thep hone but with the carriers. You can't simply flash a lot of the models by entering an unlock code, you usally need a non-carrier network SIM to get the dialogue to pop up, at least on stock/nostalgia.
One big issue that is being reported as irreversable is an IMEI modification. That is like the MAC address for your computer. Hopefully no one dealswiht that

better battery life than the skyrocket by far.

With my skyrocket I had 3 batteries (2 spares) and it would be very rare if I only had to swap out once in a day.
Had my gs3 for a few days now and it can last me almost half a day.
Mind you I use my phone basically 24/7.. I still bought two spare batteries but don't think I'll be swapping out as often

[Q]T989 internals...did we get shafted or setup for future?

Like the title says... did we get shafted? Or did they change our internals for a purpose? Are we going to be running better than the other guys when ics hits our phone ? Or did we just get shafted with an inferior product.
I'm hoping the change was to sacrifice a little bit in the beginning to ensure we had a BA setup when ics came

The only reason T-Mobile went the the snapdragon is because the exynos was not compatible with their hspa + 42mbps network.
There is enough hate in the world. Why can't we all get along here ...?
Our phone is just fine. It's still better than any other Android phone currently available. And ICS will run just the same on the T-Mobile version as it will on the rest. People need to stop panicking for no reason.
Moot question. Phones get outdated in mere weeks.
Haha true!
I had this same problem when I was into dsm's...I had a 1990 eclipse gsx with awd and I did a 2.4l stroker and people *****ed about reliability....when the thing would **** the bed every other day no matter what. lol
Like it's been said before, the difference between our phones performance wise is negligible. Personally, I'd rather deal with slower network speeds to reduce hardware fragmentation, but that's just me. Mobile network speeds vary way to much to truly care, and I'm always pretty close to wifi if I really need it.
the way i see it... cell phone NETWORK technology doesn't change over night
if you want good phone that will last you for the next 3+ year (think HTC HD2) this is a good one worth keeping, as other phones can't get the top speed of 42 Mbps
of course, waiting for Tmo or any other network to reach those speed in HSPDA+ it'll take years
the current fight is between LTE vs HSPDA+
HSPDA+ will win in the long run as it's the one most compatible and most deployed world wide in all countries
LTE is non compatible in different providers, cities & countries
so although LTE is very fast... (if and when you happen to find signal for it) it's not widely deployed, HSPDA+ is available everywhere, albit with inconsistent speed depending where you are, compare to LTE... at least you get signal
LTE is like all or nothing
HSPDA+ might not be the fastest, but you will get service, and on good spots you can go as high as LTE
if you are into gaming... just get a Tablet, no point upgrading from phone to phone every 6 months
Our Adreno 220 GPU is faster than the Galaxy Nexus and Exynos, and our CPU is a beast also, combined with our scorpion processor and full gpu hardware acceleration our phone should be the best performing
exynos was sooo last year. Not being compatible with hpsa+ or even LTE means its future is short. long live the t989 and skyrocket. atleast til Tmo comes out with a 720 display phone

...exactly!
if i continue to be employed for the next few years, i'll probably keep switching phones every 6 mth or so as usual
but if i were on a bind & tight budget, T989 is the phone i'll want to keep around for the long haul
i'm planning to save up for the next Asus Transformer (tegra) Penta Core (for games & to replace my old outdated ASUS VX5 laptop), and just keep the T989 for what i mainly need it for mobile Internet & tethering
the T989 might not beat the HD2 in the way of multi OS and long lived evolution, but i do see a very long live for T989 running Android and/or Ubuntu OS
I want the asus transformer prime as well but after my g2x experience with nvidia....I don't think I ever want to buy another nvidia product. When it comes to open source...they are not an option. They do not release drivers.

I know this is off topic but do you have pictures of the GSX? I was always into them but was told that they weren't that reliable when performance played a factor. Don't they have a head gasket blowing and spinning bearings issue?

Back in the import racing days here in Houston, I watched a 90's model GSX eat up a corvette from one red light to another, time and time again...it was brutal and impressive.

The thing with the awd dsm's is that they're extremely quick from light to light since they barely spin tires and they are light. My dad's GMC Typhoon eats Corvette's and Mustang's light to light but barely beat them in a quarter mile.

This really is getting off topic but I have to contribute as well...
I've actually got my buddy's '95 GST sitting in my garage right now. We just installed a ported EVOIII 16G turbo, FP Race manifold, bigger FMIC, full 3" turbo-back exhaust, 1250cc injectors and Walbro 255cc fuel pump. We still need to get the DSMLink and AEM Wideband O2 sensor installed so we can tune it and get it running properly. It should be looking at 350WHP+ with this setup.
Below is the build thread if you are interested. It hasn't been updated in a while because he lives in Manhattan and the car is stored at my place in Colorado, so the build progress is extremely drawn out. But it should be completed by Spring.

The car can easily be a mid 12 second car running at 350+ horsepower. What I hate about the GST is that they're front wheel so it don't stick that well for street driving (since you can't run slicks on them in the street). I'll definitely check out the link.
Edit: I just seen that long ass list!!! Damn that's a lot of parts. From what I've seen the body is nice.

You will NEVER see the full 42Mbps from a cell site ever. Well, until TMO goes to 84Mbps speeds. Why? Because, once you launch the site with that speed capability, load up a few hundred voice calls, 20 or more data sessions, well that 42 has just become 5Mbps. People don't realize that Voice traffic uses bandwidth, a lot of bandwidth in fact.
Here in Phoenix when we turned up our first 42Mbps site it was tested by a fellow tech at night. The site was locked from any outside traffic. Doing this he was able to achieve speeds hitting 39Mbps. But once that site was unlocked and taking normal traffic, it was down to like 8Mbps.
Cell sites do NOT work like internet for your home. Running on a 42Mbps site does not guarantee you will hit those speeds. A 42Mbps site is SHARED.
Now right now Verizon and MAYBE ATT are getting really good speeds on their spotty LTE networks but wait till they get loaded down with traffic. It'll be the same or worse than HSPA+.

Haha I should take a picture of all the boxes of parts in the garage, it's ridiculous. I wish I could drop that much on parts for my WRX.
He was thinking about doing the AWD conversion but we agreed that it would have been way too much of a nightmare. In fact, I damn near had him convinced to just pickup and EVO 8/9 instead. But he is just too in love with this car to let it go.

The amount of work you'd have to do to convert that car to AWD wouldn't be worth it both financially and labor wise. I'm surprised y'all are friends and you own a WRX. Y'all supposed to be rivals. Lmao. I think WRX looks nice but I hate the sound of the engine. It sounds like its missing. NO OFFENSE. My friends love the WRX over the Evo's though.

Question about this device on att or tmobile?

So after the dissapointment with the sg3 announcement and all the issues surrounding the att hox. I'm considering this phone but want to know if the old specs it has and bad camera make it worth it still. I'm planning on using my att sims card in it and/or buying a prepaid tmobile sims card probably that $30/month one. It depends I just want to be able to know I have the freedom to do so with this device? Are there any other unlocked gsm devices with better specs that can do this as well? I guess other penta band android devices, I dont think there are many or any others like the samsung galaxy nexus. At the price point its at now is it still worth it? Would you guys still buy it?
Thanks in advance for the input.

You're always going to get biased advice, we're humans. But at the $400 price point, it's the best deal basically for an unlocked smartphone (I bought mine for $440, but got a Google Back Plate pretty soon after that.)
Trust me, the camera is pretty good with 0 shutter lag, if you're just going to make a Facebook post or something like that, the images are pretty good IMO. The phone runs amazing with stock ICS too, I never really did like TouchWiz or Sense.
You could get an HTC One X which has a better camera and overall design, but I'd stick with the Nexus because of the price point and better overall user experience (Pure Google .)
Right now I've been using the T-Mobile prepaid $30 for unlimited text, data (5GBs at HSPA speeds), and 100 minutes calling and it's working perfectly.
I'm using AOKP Milestone 5 and franco.Kernel Milestone 3.

The 0 lag shutter its only for 4.0.2 or lower and the images suck, but after that starting from 4.0.3 they activated the autofocus and it will take few milli seconds more to take the pictures but the quality its awesome... I mean you can take a good picture with the camera.. Nothing bad about it..and really good 1080p vídeos, Im also on aokp milestone 5 and franco milestone 3 runs buttery smooth, flawlesly, good battery, loads of features, very very good user experience, you have everything handy and i paid for mine 650 dollars for it in january on Amazon and would pay the same again... The only device i would change this for its the upcoming nexus (guess in november/december)

Does the screen tend to look to blue on some white pages say when browsing? Im getting that impression from the videos I've seen. The on screen buttons are the only way to navigate the device, I mean do any roms fix this? Just feel like youre losing screen real estate.

And great, I'm thinking of using the tmo prepaid card from time to time.

Yeah, there is auto-focus, but it really doesn't change any performance honestly. The phone on default sets the video on 720p if I remember correctly, but you can change it to 1080p and the quality is superb. For the screen, it really depends on what phone you get, but you can easily change it by gamma tuning. But don't ask around for these settings, it differs for every device. As for the on-screen buttons, you can use AOKP and go to Settings>ROM Control>Power menu options, then turn navigation bar toggle on to use some apps full-screen (it really looks better, esp. in Modern Combat 3.)
If you have any more questions feel free to ask me, I'll answer anything you have
I just bought one a week ago through Amazon (so i could use gift card credit), and i couldn't be happier. I'm on t-mo and speeds are just fine.
The phone is very fast and very stable. Display is crisp and clear. Overall this thing is rock solid, and performs faster than what the specs are on paper IMO.
Of course, i did come from a G2x... and that thing is a damn train wreck of issues.
Honestly though - I have no idea why everyone is saying this phone is already outdated, just because the SGS3 has been announced. There's always going to be new phones coming out, they're going to have different specs. And many of them with greater specs on paper will not run as well as the GNex because of the overhead of all the bloatware running on the phone.
I don't know about others, but my GNex is VERY fast. Speedtest on t-mo's network is almost double what my G2x could do. Scrolling and typing are very responsive, and Chrome as a browser is insanely fast.
Overall, this phone is perfect in my opinion. I've missed my N1 ever since i "upgraded" to the G2x, and now it feels like i have a clean, quick, crisp phone back.

Yeah, I've experienced no random reboots, and the battery is superb if you use franco.Kernel and AOKP.
At this point though, I would recommend buying from Google Play direct, because I bought a Nexus from Wire4Less and I ended up getting a DoCoMo Nexus (already pernament unlock though), even though I emailed them in advance and they told me that they were selling the European version of the Nexus (but I got a $40 goodwill refund because of this.)
The pentile display shouldn't be much of an issue if you aren't a screenophile, and besides, you can just gamma tune which fixed my screen issue.
I live in Ann Arbor, Michigan myself and I get around 4-8 Mbps speeds.

Actually with T-Mobile (at least), I'm getting HSPA+ speeds.

Can you guys still recommend this device?

I had this question recently for the sgs2 forum and was set when I find out att doesnt have them no more, and almost leaned towards the note or sgs2 skyrocket today when I had the most aggravating time with att csr where my upgrade date was changed for no apparent reason so I'm done with att and contracts but thats nor here nor there. Yes I tried to find these devices on craigslist but nothing went through and I rather save myself the aggravation with used devices from people that did who knows what to them.
So my main reason for even thinking of the sgs2 was for the dev support. And I know this device has some great dev support but the reputation for this device isnt the greatest like the screen and camera I believe. So with that being said is it worth the $400 for a new one?
Absolutely it's worth $400. If you want to put it in perspective a bit, yeah it's not as good as the GS3, BUT, it's about 90% as good for 50% of the price. As far as bang for your buck goes, it doesn't get any better without signing two years away.
Yup.
$400 for the GSM model is a really good price IMO.
I guess ordering one this weekend would be useless due to the holiday?
Also, what kind of benchmarks are you guys getting with the custom roms?
And I hardly hear any talk about the led notifications? Do any roms take advantage of them, I mean do they work well with different types of alerts like say just one color for google voice texts?
I think is worth I got a htc one s(had a sprint galaxy nexus loved the phone hated the network) so I got tmobile and I'm gonna sell my sprint gnex and get me a galaxy nexus unlocked the one s camera is really good and sense has improved but man this phone feels faster and with tmobile speeds I'm hooked

The stock ROM offers limited LED control app-by-app. Some ROMs have LED control with more granularity. Most people are using Light Flow to control their LED. It works extremely well. You can configure everything.
I wouldn't pay 10 pounds for this phone!!! Google doesn't care about this nexus!!!
Sorry I forgot , this is no phone because u can't make a call after 20 attempts or receive a call )
So its more like a mini tablet )

Mine is working quite nicely. I'd highly recommend it over others at $600-$700 for sure.
I will never buy a carrier device again after owning a Nexus device. I will get updates beyond what any carrier will offer so my $400 device is worth more than any $2-300 subsidized device.

As others have said for $400 its a wonderful deal. I got mine 3 months ago for $450. That being said the screen on devices like the OneX look nicer.
For that price, you cant really argue. I love the stock android experience and getting updates direct from Google. There's a really active development community for this phone (and the other nexus devices for that matter) and i've been able to check out a lot of custom roms and kernels.
Go for it
It's obviously still a relevant device if the OP is still thinking about this device compared to what's out there.
It's a great device at a great price. Not much to really say.

With all due respect benchmarks are not pointless or else people wouldnt use them at all. Its not a black or white issue. Its a bit more complex than that. When used properly they can serve to paint a generalized picture of performance for any given device. Admittedly they can also be manipulated to post huge numbers that do not reflect real world performance. They can also be used as a tool to diagnose or confirm a performance issue. Now in no way am I suggesting that these benchmarks are the be all end all but they surely are not pointless.
A while back I posted in a thread regarding this topic and asked the participants to explain to me a way that would ensure accurate results when testing our devices. No one responded, probably because nobody cares. It seems there two kinds of people here with regards to benchmarks. Those who use them and those who do not. And I have yet to see any rational discussion on this topic. not that im looking for it.
Anyways My Gnex scored a 6801 on AnTuTu
GNEX- Running AKOP 4.04 with Francos Kernel overclocked to 1344MHz
What's not to like? I have had this phone for a few months now, rooted it the first day and am running all kinds of ROMS and Kernels. I guess if you are running stock and wait for Google or carrier updates you may get a bit frustrated but I have had a great experience with it.
The camera controversy is silly. 5MP vs 8mp on a "flat lens" with a cell phone processor to me is not detectable (IMHO). I carry a DSLR to get my high quality pictures not the phone.
My only complaint has always been battery life. Coming from a Thunderbolt with a very large extended battery and a smaller screen, I routinely run out battery. But this phone has a large beautiful screen and that screen eats power. So I bought this
http://www.amazon.com/New-Trent-IMP1000-Thunderbolt-Blackberry/dp/B003ZBZ64Q/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1338036621&sr=8-1
and my problems are solved. But performance wise, looks wise, and reliability wise, this phone is awesome. Just run the latest rom (AOKP), kernel(franco), radio (FC04/05) and you'll be fine.
First android device ive owned that ive not felt the need to root or flash a custom rom on.
Very fast and smooth phone.
Stock ICS looks so much nicer than any of the skins out there.
Ive ordered my wife an SGS 3 and im not even a little bit jealous. The novelties that it adds like pop up play i already have on my phone from a free app on the play store.
The hold your phone to your ear from a message to call can be added though smart gestures.
Tried S voice on my phone and i honestly think that speaktoit assistant is better so i deleted the S voice. ( before it was patched )
2 of my friends have One X and i hate the new sense. The only thing i like from the newer phones is the burst mode which again can be added through an app.
The Galaxy Nexus will recieve much better support than other phones obviously in case you care about that.
Great phone and i plan on keep it for quite a while.
Edit: Oh yeah and use light flow for the notification light. I have blue for sms... Green for Gmail... Red for missed call... Yellow for Gtalk etc etc. Again another free app
How about the onscreen buttons , is that hard to get used to?
I upgraded from an og EVO4g and after this I will never use anything but a Nexus phone ever again. LightFlow unlocks all of the LED notification colors, and the 5mp camera on this phone blows the 8mp camera of my Evo out of the water.

Not hard to get used to, but then I've had a Honeycomb tablet for about a year.
This phone is undeniably worth the $400. I'm getting the GS3 for my husband, and I'm not even jealous.
other than the dodgy radio's it's the best phone ive had soo far. runs ics as it's suppose to be.

Early Impressions About T-Mobile Galaxy S4

I have been using mine for a few hours now and decided to write a bit about my first impressions. I hope these will be helpful.
Here are my initial thoughts (I am coming from the iPhone 5 that I had been using for the last 5 mos)
- The phone is light (feels too light for its size), but well made and well balanced in terms of weight. No issues with build quality (except for the one mentioned below). But it's so freaking slippery. I can't wait for my Spigen case to arrive.
- The screen is gorgeous. Large and vibrant. If you don't like AMOLED oversaturation, there is a "Movie" preset that tones down the colors.
- Battery life is the best I've ever experienced. Even compared to the iPhone. I used the phone for about 3 hours and was only down 25% (I understand that the gauge still needs to be calibrated and the battery life so far may not be typical).
- I am not a fan of stock Android, but Touchwhiz is bloated and laggy. With the specs that the phone has, there shouldn't be any choppiness or waiting for stock apps (caller, etc.) to open. But there is. I am hoping that Samsung will optimize the skin's performance in the next update.
- Related: People who put so much non-removable bloatware should be hung by their necks. Why is Flipboard, Chrome, Lookout and tens of other apps non-removable and always seem to run in the background? I'll wait for a verified list of safe-to-remove apps and bye-bye bloatware.
- Overall Touchwhiz is inconsistent. The design of stock apps varies so much. And damn those stupid bubble sounds.
- Camera is amazing in well-lit environments (better than the iPhone's), but not so much in low light (The Night mode fixes the issue for static objects though).
- Call sound quality is great.
- The only minor gripe about the build quality / design that I have concerns the power button. It's small, almost flush, and has very weak, almost non-existent tactile feedback. Just the opposite of what the power button on the iPhone is like. The volume rocker is fine though.
I will update this thread if I discover anything new.
Please, post your mini-reviews and first impressions here as well. Thanks.
Thanks for the early review. I'm getting mine tomorrow, so the wait is killing me.
Which color did you get by the way? And what did you think of that color?
I got black but still have some urge to get white. It might not matter because I also bought the Neo Hybrid case.
It does seem Samsung and T-Mo have put a lot of bloatware into the device - I can't wait for a good ROM to come by.
From my showrooming at AT&T and Best Buy, the display is indeed gorgeous and the design is better. I don't know.
I've seen the HTC One side by side with the S4 in AT&T and Best Buy, and I don't think the S4 is that much worse/cheap-feeling.
I actually found the S4 to be more comfortable to hold, and seems to fit more comfortably into my hand. The HTC One,
with all its aluminium glory, feels more rigid, and certainly not as light as the S4. I don't know.. preference.
I do think one other phone that doesn't get too much love is the Xperia Z. Great build quality, near-stock UI.
They have some nice themes that I'm using on the S3.
Good early review. I do have a question for you. I am thinking of returning this iPhone 5 for the S4. Knowing what you know now, would you advise others like me to hang on and wait it out? or is this a phone that even with its lag problems worth the switch?

I got the black mist version and I like it much better than the white. But it's personal preference.
I have already rooted the phone using the Motochopper exploit (very easy; thanks to Dan).
I also find the design much better than the S3 (more "professional", "industrial").
I do like how the HTC looks and feel, but it's not by any means more rigid. None of these phones are rugged.
The Xperia Z is a great looking phone but I personally thing that the screen on the S4 and HTC One are miles better.
With that said, the most important factor for me was the removable battery. It's always great to have a phone that doesn't have a worn battery even after a year or two of use. Plus, the battery itself is the largest one among five-inchers.

The Note 2 has the best battery life by far of any smartphone that is not the Droid Razr Maxx. That thing can last for days, and maybe weeks with the monster Anker extended battery. I hope I can get similar results with the S4, though I'm afraid if I keep a lot of apps, that will drain the battery faster. I have to say the dual speakers on the HTC One really impressed me. I'm wondering why Samsung still hasn't done it this way (or even better, dual front and back speakers). They're already one of the few tablet makers that put the speakers in front, and not the back. I live for the replaceable battery and microSD slot.

It's personal preference. There are advantages for both phones.
iPhone is much more practical to use as a PHONE (smaller size, pocketability). It's much more fluid. However, the screen size and resolution are limiting.
The S4 being a flagship Android device offers great hardware (namely the screen) and customizibility.
I have rooted my phone and installed Titanium. I will remove as much bloatware as possible and see if that fixes the lagginess problem. I will report back.
Overall, I do not regret switching from the iPhone. So far, I am really liking the S4. Let's see if that changes
My wife and I just got ours. We switched from verizon to tmo and I switched from my galaxy nexus and she switched from an iphone5. I was really nervous that she wouldnt like it but so far she loves it and hasnt put it down in few hours. For me it wasnt that big of a change... but for her it is like the first time she picked up a smart phone. The screen i think is what she likes the best... it is big but the phone doesnt feel massive. I think it actually feels smaller in hand than my gnexus. And she really likes the camera (not talking quality just the options). It is going to take me some time to get use to touch wiz but I will probably unlock the bootloader and install cm 10.1 whenever it is available for it.
If anyone else is interested in any other details let me know.
I would have no problem recommending this over an iphone5 to anyone. I probably would never have said that about any other phone before (i made my mom get the iphone4s when it came out). Now when the next iphone (5s/6) comes out that may be a different story (but we will have to wait until apple lets us know what they are doing next).

Thanks for your input. Unfortunately, Tim Cook stated that we shouldn't be expecting a larger size/resolution screen iPhone any time soon. So, if screen size matters to you, the S4 is indeed a better option.
Phone is great. Lag is minor. But I do notice top of screen can get hot fairly quick from not too much intense tasks.. not to bad though. Amd an update will surely adress these things

I made a unbagging (because Tmo shipped my GS4 in a polybag rather than a box), unpackaging, setup, and initial impressions video.
http://youtu.be/6aaJ_pAlFZw
Since I've filmed this, I wanna add this:
Basically, I believe this launch was less than stellar. Not only did Samsung tease the S4 over the last few months, but there's the locked/verifiable bootloaders (again I add verifiable because from my understanding on AT&T and most likely Verizon too, there's checks to make sure you have a legit recovery and boot image for those particular carriers, and if it fails, brick), little availability for 32GB (ironically the only carrier to have a 32GB version is the locking down AT&T); ZERO 64GB when they claimed that 16, 32, and 64 GB versions would be available, and as I expected, Sixaxis and Wii Remotes DO NOT work out of the box (mostly because it uses Android 4.2.2 and from past experience with my Nexus 7 it does NOT play nice with sixaxis or wii remotes for whatever reason).
Oh well, at least I did showcase the Motochopper root method at the time of filming and some time after I filmed, T-mobile's version of the bootloader can indeed be unlocked. (Sprint's is unlocked from the start, btw.)

It's funny because AT&T keeps claiming "soon" for the 32 GB version yet no one knows (and AT&T will not say anything about) when "soon" is. So, although it could happen, AT&T doesn't have the 32 GB yet (and I think may never).

LG G4 - Hands on Q&A

Hey!
I've just got my LG G4 (I've actually only got it about an hour ago so still setting it up)
But I thought I'd write up a hands on of my experiences with the device and also answer any questions you have. In this thread I will;
Upload screenshots of BenchMarks - If there are any you'd like me to try please let me know
Battery life - from extreme use to casual use
Camera - Night & Day
Accessories - Screen protectors and Cases
Android Version - 5.1
Baseband version - MPSS.BO.2.5.C3-00059-M8992FAAAANAZM-1.17437.1
Kernal version - 3.10.49
Please feel free to ask me any questions in relation to the device and also if you have anything you'd like me to do I'd be more than happy to assist (No Drop Tests) Also Once I get a few accessories I will try and post pictures of fittings. Also bare in mind that I've only just got this phone so before I write up a big review about it I'll need a few weeks messing around with the handset.
I'll also try and post pictures to give you a better insight to the device!
Any questions?

Hi Jason,
Thanks for posting this in the forum.
Seeing as prior to the G4 you had a Galaxy S5, how much of an improvement do you see this vs. your current phone or tablet?
How much better are the photos vs. The S5.
Is the LG G4 a game changer or one of the best phones you have had?
.: Sent from an optimized 'ANDROID til I die' device :.
Does it wobble a lot when typing while the phone is set on a flat surface?
Sound quality recorded is pretty bad based on what I've heard from Youtube videos, will a third party app fix this?
Video is shaky, will a third party app fix this?

Hi,
Firstly, It's a great handset and I really like how quick it is the start up. Like you said I've had a S5 since launch and I'm really used to the UI and the buttons on the front and side ( I think the back button is going to take some getting used to) I was messing around with the camera mainly, taking random photos of my dog and what ever I could see in the back garden. I also did a short video recording as well to see the sound quality and stability of the camera. Overall I'm really happy with the camera (I'm not a photographer) but I feel like one with this device.
It's a GREAT phone, there are some really good points to the handset and some really bad points. One thing I really don't like is the build quality of the handset. I 've got the one with the black leather back and it feels cheap and tacky. I can't wait to get a case on it as it feels fragile. In my opinion I don't think it's a game changer, it opens some apps really quickly and can take a picture but I need to put it under some serious stress to see how it copes.
I hope this helps, sorry I'm rambling (it's the morning)

It does wobble a lot while typing, I'm hoping a case might change this. I will look into this and try and upload a few videos, can you think of any apps that might help? Also the videos don't seem shakey I took one last night and they are fine.
But again I'll take some longer videos in various areas to try and get a better insight into this.

Hi Jason,
just wondering, what model do you have, F500 ? if yes from which carrier?
if it is the F500 how does it handle the LTE and Wifi?
does it have a lot of bloatware?
if you are looking for a good case, the extra thin one from spigen is the one i had on my G3 and it is really good ( SPIGEN )
I have two questions.
1-how is the battery life?
2-how much free ram do you have on average ?

The Wifi is great, it loads most web pages pretty quickly. Funny thing is that It doesn't show that I've got 4G, even though with my S5 I would have 4G in the same areas. I've checked the signal strength and its at (-109 dBm 3asu) now I'm not a tech wiz but I think I'm not getting 4G
It was loaded with a lot of apps which I can't get rid of, I've not rooted the handset yet so I'm hoping this will get rid of a few things. Because after I use the camera a few in quick succession the phone slows down dramatically.
Hope this helps
The battery life is pretty bad if I'm honest i have only had it off charge for an hour and a half and it has already gone down 5% from doing nothing! It wil last all day but im yet to find the time to seriously stress the battery out with a few games.
Ive attached an image of ram for you to look at.

Well you need to compare the 4g / LTE frequencies of your carrier with the Korean phone you have. F500L means you got it from the LG U+ carrier. That frequency issues is the biggest trap when buying a phone there.. the second is the rooting and ROMs for their models. The international models get way more attention.
if you can pull system via ADB, and contact @Chainfire, i guess he will be happy to make a root. He is the master.

I've never really thought about looking at something like this.
But from what I can read and correct me if I'm wrong I can't get 4G as I'm with O2 and the phone I've got only works on 4G with a higher frequency?
Also thanks for the tip with the rooting!
Could you confirm if there is a barometer?

You hit the nail on the head, I really like this handset and I feel that it could have been the best on the market! If only it was a little more powerful, I found that after prolonged use it does slow down. Maybe if an update comes out to optimise the software a little it might be faster.
I really really like the camera on the phone, I'm not a camera expert or anything but it has a lot of features! I'm still trying to get to grips with.

To expect it to be Exynos processor in terms of speed would be unfair. Perhaps the LG G4 does not have the latest specs hardware wise but it's a hell of a device.
From my part I cannot throw away money on another wanna be Apple company (looking at you Samsung)
Yeah the device is a bit faster and looks a little better than the G4 but I just can't do it.
There's a review I just posted on another thread and it pretty much summarizes everything up. He has all the flagship devices and choose to stick with the LG G4 that's saying a lot right there.
I'm an xda member since many years ago, once we get root, bootloader unlock and Roms there is no limit where we an take this device.
Perfect example is my Motorola DROID RAZR HD, when bought it was slow, unresponsive and unimpressive out of the box. Compared to today it's Rooted, bootloader unlocked and flashed with Nexesque Rom it's become one of the fastest devices I've ever owned. The thing is only equipped with a Dual Core processor and 1GB of Ram.
There is a lot to be excited for on the LG G4 and I hope we get root, bootloader unlock capabilities, recovery and Roms soon enough.
