Straight Talk SIM Card - T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy SIII

Hello. I was thinking of buying the Samsung Galaxy SIII from a t-mobile store, and getting Straight Talk's T-Mobile Micro SIM card. Would I be able to use the phone on Straight Talk's prepaid service then? Would I have any configuration issues or connectivity problems?
Thanks so much for your help.

I think you need to unlock your phone first but once you do, it should work fine.

Is unlocking the phone hard to do? How do I do it?

I bought mine unlocked from a retailer through Amazon. If you buy it through T Mobile you can ask them for an unlock code but I have read you need to have the account active and in good standing for 3 months. You can also buy an unlock code online from a few unlocking services.

Thanks man. Actually I found a lot of other people with the same questions. Turns out, as long as the phone is T-Mobile and the SIM Card is tmobile compatible from straight talk, it will work without unlocking it.
But thank you so much for your help man.

I am using my s3 on straight talk and all is great. No problems with anything. Data is good mms is good signal is good gotta love havin this badass phone for $45 a month. Plus I average 8-10 gb of data monthly no problems even tethering. Actually I'm tethered right now with my kindle fire and my girls nexus 7 and as long as its the tmo s3 and you get the tmo sim youndo not need to unlock.

This is good to hear. I originally planned on checking both T Mobile and straight Talk to compare services in my area. I went with T Mobile first with the $50 plan and within a week I was already throttled to 2g making mobile data nearly useless. I have my straight Talk sim ready to go but I'm stubborn and I'm gonna get my money's worth out of t Mobile service before switching.

Hello, I just received straight talk for tmobile on my galaxy s3 and can't get data/mms to work. I'm able to make calls/text. I'm using the APN settings that came with the activation kit. What's your APN settings? Thanks!

Unlocked Dinc2 work on AT&T or T-Mobile?

Can an unlocked Dinc2 work on AT&T or T-Mobile? I don't want to face the same situation like with the Droid Pro or Droid 2 Global you know.
probably not. they might work as a phone, but not for data. i'm pretty sure the 3G bands are different.
Well you "can", but people found out the carrier (AT&Tmo) is responsible for blocking your phone. They want you to buy their phones
sent via rooted Droid Incredible 2
Apparently it can but only on the EDGE network
One guy on here even said he got it to work with TMobile, post #5: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1066953
I'm pretty sure I would be the guy that they reference to be able to get it to work all you have to do is insert your sim card and manually change the apns. I got it to work fine on Tmobile
Edit: every time you switch from Tmobile to Verizon or visa versa it will make you re sign in most every account on your phone

got Dinc2 for wife last week, may swap with her as I travel in areas with no Verizon, as well as foreign, so I can use GSM. Has anyone tried ATT prepaid SIM in Dinc2 yet? When I get chance, I'll try it, and use b0gman's suggestion.
Does anyone know if Dinc2 still works on At&t and Tmo with unlock code bought on eBay? A couple of sellers on eBay claims that it will work ONLY outside the US. I really want to make sure because I may be getting a new Dinc2 at great price.
Thanks.
US carriers do work Dinc2

It works inside the US if you unlock the sim. Couple of methods to get the unlock code: 1) Be a Verizon customer for 6 mos in good standing and call and request it from them 2) get a XTC clip and get it yourself 3) buy the code from some unlocking service... After that just go to your wireless settings and set it to GSM and input your APN settings and it should work just fine. Mine works on Tmo. It occasionally acts up and I have to reregister it, but most of the time it works just fine.

Yes. I worked with VZ to unlock my Dinc2 and used a prepaid SIM for a trip to Europe - UK, Italy, Greece, Turkey. All worked fine and way lower cost than VZ roaming. Same situation - my wife got the Dinc that I used to use.
GSM is why I upgraded from a Dinc to a Dinc 2.
Using pay as you go ATT for backup telephone paid $100 for the whole year($8 a month)
How to with no data too much $$$ anyway
S-Off
Install Recovery Root
Install Senseless Rom by Lefty
Get unlock code from Verizon
Put in Pay as you go ATT
Settings/Call/GSM
Get IMEI to register with pay as you go
enjoy!
Just an fyi...I got an unlock code from Verizon, activated with T-mobile Sim, entered the apn's, but I live in a roaming area so I don't have data until I get into T-Mobile coverage again, luckily I have wifi at my house. Also edge service is slower that 3g with Verizon....but not a lot,
Sent from my ADR6350 using XDA App
ATT works aswell just unlocked my Dinc2 and I can switch between verizon service and ATT at will. Edge only but it uses the 3g/4g (UMTS) frequencies of Tmobile, maybe a ROMed phone with the right kernel could get that working
Moved to Q&Q, if you are asking a question-post in the correct forum.

Working On A Guide For Flashing Incredible 2 Over To Straight Talk

Hey Guys,
I'm currently working on a guide for flashing a Incredible 2 to Straight Talk Service. I've hit a huge snag though. If anyone with experience with CDMA Workshop can PM it'd be greatly appreciated. When I get the phone completely flashed over I'll happily help anyone else flash their phone over I don't see paying 50 - 100 dollars for someone to flash it when I can figure it out and use the flashing cost to pay for service

Sorry I did not realize i had a reply to this posting. Well I know how to flash the straight talk prl to the phone and etc... I just can not get Incredible 2 to be recognized by CDMA workshop which is a major part of getting this phone running on Straight Talk, since straight talk doesn't allow phones other than their phone on the network.

Yeah, Ik the feeling bud I've been trying to get my phone running on Straight Talk for ages, as soon as I figure it out I'll help ya out!
Wish I could help because I'd like to do this as well. Hope you get the help you need.
I hope so too... cause the only other option for me in the area if i want to use my Incredible 2 is cricket and the service, stinks around here.
I hear you. The least expensive, seemingly reliable, option I have found is $50.
Yeah, and at least with straight talk its on verizon so we know it'll be reliable, it unlimited everything and we get verizon data speeds all at 45/month which is a lot better than the 103/month i was paying on verizon for 450 minute, unlimited txt, and unlimited data.
From what I gather reading about it, ST unlimited data on the $45 plan is actually capped at ~2GB.
An alternative on the Verizon network is PagePlus who announced they are upping the data on the $55 plan to 1GB beginning this month (was scheduled for the 18th but may have been pushed back to the 25th).
Edited to change the PP plan from $40 to $55/mo. Apologies.
Yeah even with it being capped off its still the best choice for the price, and even throttled speeds aren't to bad on ST.
I can probably help you guys out if you are still interested. I do not have the incredible 2, but I have done this with another android phone.

Sometimes it takes 72 hours to get 3G, IME. Are you using a 3G capable donor phone? If so and you wait that long and still don't have it, call ST support and tell them you aren't getting 3G speeds, without mentioning the swap of course...
I'd hate to revive a month old thread but I did come across this guide for flashing it for Cricket. If someone could adapt it for StraightTalk that would be awesome!

I'm tempted to get one to try buy I just wonder if someone already has...
it will work just fine for text and talk but the internet will be slow because the phone get only 2G Edge so that's the only problem if u don't care about the speed it will be fine for u

ATT S3 Data Problem (Having my cake and eating it, too)

Several years ago I got a unique data plan for an off-contract Xperia X1A phone from ATT. It was the unlimited data for 'smartphones' for $15. My phone was not recognized by their system and I got unlimited 3G data.
A year or so ago, my Xperia broke down and I got an HTC Vision off-contract with ATT's 3G networks. It worked well and immediately connected to 3G.
The screen recently broke and while I've ordered a replacement, I realized it was getting a little long in the tooth so I decided to get an S3 with no contract from Amazon Wireless.
I sliced down my Sim card into micro size and it fit (yay) and the phone service works...
But no data. Not even 3G.
Halp?
Have you updated your APN's for the phone? I dont know the ATT APN's off hand but Im sure you can google them and find them right away

I don't know if att is the same as rogers in Canada but I had to get a new lte sim card which would suck for you. I hope they never take your plan away.

Best I can tell, LTE needs a plan change. If you try to swap SIM cards, it still won't work. Worse, they'd detect you trying to connect to LTE and they may slam you to one of the new plans. Ask me how I know.
It's up to you to decide whether LTE is worth the price increase. Nice to be able to choose.
If you're feeling charitable, either XDA or Cyanogen seem appropriate.

This is correct. If you start using a LTE phone and don't have a LTE plan, you'll start getting texts and emails from AT&T asking you to contact them so they can update your plan. They'll probably give you a new micro sim, as your old cut down sim isn't LTE enabled.

Well... today they actually did upgrade me to the 3gig/$30 data plan. I called them and told them I was going to stop using this phone, return it, and go back to my non-smartphone. They put me back on the old data plan - but I'm not sure for how long.
I'm waiting on my screen replacement for the HTC Vision to arrive, in which case I'll see if they try to force the upgrade again. If they DO, I will again tell them to put it back and send back my S3 and go back to the HTC Vision.
I wonder, though, if there is some way to prevent them from knowing it is a Galaxy S3. Mybe if I bought one from Telus or Bell? My HTC Vision was not released for ATT and I got it from some Canadian company with the same network settings, I think.
Besides, if they are going to FORCE me onto the plan, I may as well take a subsidized phone.

I walked into the store with my backup - a moto F3 - and told them I lost my old sim card and needed a microsim. The rep wanted to test that it worked so I asked for some tape and taped it into place. I told him that the phone was foreign and used a rare sim size but a micro could work with tape. They bought it.
So I got home and put the new micro into the S3 and no data using the ATT APN but 3G using the Cingular. So let's see if they try to switch me back again.
REally wish I could get LTE on my current plan. Hmm.
I'm increasingly unhappy with this phone, though, and may end up returning it anyway.

HTC EVO on Straight Talk service?

So I'm trying to help a friend get the HTC evo on their straight talk plan. Ive looked at the boost mobile and other tutorials to get it on verizon. But hoping someone could help out. It doesn't need a sim card or anything. Any help would be much appreciated!
I thought Straight Talk was Walmart's service through AT&T, which would mean it's GSM and requires a SIM card....
Yea that's what I thought but I was told it was through Verizon also, and the phone my friend is currently using has no sim card in it. Ive never had that service so I don't know for sure tho. Maybe someone could provide more insight..?

Well...it may be roaming on part of Verizon, but I believe its T-Mobile.
I almost signed up with them at my local Walmart but talked myself out of it.
At mine it didn't sell, so that location discontinued it then came back, then stopped again. Last I saw it was back again. Lol
I'm about sure its a GSM based phone service. Best bet, call the local Walmart and see what phones their actually selling for it. That will tell you what it uses for sure.

Actually, there are services on eBay that will flash the Evo from Sprint to Straight Talk to utilize the Verizon network. If our phones had sim cards, we could just buy a ATT or T Mobile sim card from Straight Talk, change a few settings and be on our way. As it stands with Sprint's Evo, most flashing services require that you ship the phone off (check seller feedback and comments 1st!) while others will flash via remote log in on your computer. Verizon network for $45 per month... can't beat it. My rooted phone was shipped off and is being flashed now. I will try to update all once my phone has been returned (3g speeds, etc).
Edit: Got my phone back today. Paid ~ $79.00 with no need to buy a donor phone. Gentleman was very courteous and my phone was returned in excellent condition. I'm digging the Verizon service.

[Q] Help to root a Straight Talk GSIII?

Hi all,
I have been guided to this section regarding my Straight Talk Samsung Galaxy SIII because it's model number indicates it operates through Sprint. It is a SCH-S960L. I have had it for about a week. Came with 4.1.2. Does anyone have any information on how I can root this phone? I have searched everywhere and can't find any solid info about it.
I thank you ahead for any guidance you can give!
Lisa
Rooting for all S3 is pretty much the same. The thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=38172219 has almost all the answers to questions you will have. #2 thing mentioned is rooting it will take you to the guide with video just watch the video several times read everything it's rather simple in less than 5 minutes you will have it rooted and custom recovery installed.

Yes the S3 through straight talk runs on sprint.... if you rooted, did you use a rom?
I bought my wife and daughter these phones through straight talk. The box had the red verizon map on it, and the network type is LTE/ cdma. I'm on regular verizon and can get LTE, but they can't.They stay on 3g most of the time. Sucks. But I am curious if you were able to find a rom to run after you rooted it? I'm not really satisfied with straight talk service. Family seems to have a lot more dropped calls than me. Anything that can make these phones more bearable would be nice.

Straight Talk doesn't "run" on T-mobile. Straight Talk is a Tracfone service, which depending on the specific device, runs on a variety of towers through a variety of companies. Verizon and At&t are the most commonly used towers.
Well, I finally gave up and put my family back on Verizon. Weird thing was when vz sales rep was swapping numbers, he put the straight talk phone info into the computer and it said the phone was using sprint and some verizon variant network for data.
Was wondering if anyone has ever found a rom to run on this phone. Friend wants the phone, but rooted.

Yeah, I'll probably just sell it to him and be done with it. It's a shame straight talk didn't work out for me. Might have better coverage in a city. But where I live, it's crap.
Now on Verizon
The FIRST GS3 offered by Straight Talk WAS on the Sprint network. But after S/T got absolutely blasted by upset customers (and POTENTIAL customers) they finally pulled their heads out of their butts and now they offer a CDMA-V variant...that's VERIZON for those who don't know the codes. There is a code on the lower left corner of the packaging that will say CDMA-S (Sprint), CDMA-V (Verizon) and GSM which will be either T-Mobile or AT&T (not sure of the codes after the GSM as I'm not familiar with those, but the person in electronics would (should) know if you ask).
So now you can have one of the best phones on the market, behind only the S4, on Verizon's network. I got this phone the day after the Black Friday sales, and it still rang up at the sale price of $299. I was prepared to pay the regular price of $399 so you can imagine my surprise and delight when it rang up at the sale price. So what if it only has 3G. I constantly hear people complaining about this fact, so they can either have their 4G LTE on Sprint and get no coverage, or have a contract and pay 3 times what I pay, or have one of the best phones out there with 3G and $45 a month for everything unlimited on the best network with no contract. The choice seems obvious to me. And I'm an ex-Verizon contract customer. Our bill was just too high. I'm happy to pay more for a phone with no contract.
Now, hopefully somebody can answer my question...would it be the same process to root this phone as the one on the Sprint network? Is there any possibility you could screw up your phone with no chance of recovery? I would like to root my phone but I do not want to be in a situation where I'm looking at my phone with a blank screen and no way to recover, or it won't turn on or it changes to Japanese...etc...you get what I'm asking. If there's any risk I'm not going to do it, it just wouldn't seem worth it to me. But if it's something that it works or doesn't and no in between then I would like to try it. Thank you for any advice.
Wow! Great advice

Wow! Top answer here. Too bad it was a complete fail for the straight talk version.
