AT&T: Is there any way to change the dumb frog emoicons in the stock msg app? - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

I really hate the dumb little green emoticons in the stock msg app but I don't want to install another messaging app because other than that.....I like it..it works fine for me.
is there a file that these come from that can be modified?

Not without rooting. If you're rooted, is pretty easy to do.

I'm not rooted at the moment...but I will be after the JB update...how would I go about subbing the frogs for something better?

If you use a file explorer to pull the system/app/Mms.apk from your phone, you decompile this file and put it back together. However just to change the emoticons this is overkill.
You can open the APK in WinRar, navigate to the res\drawable-xhdpi folder, and replace all the emo_ PNG files with whatever 48x48 emoticon you want. Probably could use the Emoji files that relate and just copy/rename them.
Then find an empty flashable Zip, put it in there, flash from recovery and you're good to go.

I would just like to make a note here that they are not frogs but the android guy, also emotes are specific to phone so only you see those emotes any other phone sees their own emotes.

Correct. Problem is I can't tell what they're supposed to be most of the time.
Either way, due to the darn noses in the emoticons, they are hardly ever seen beyond my outgoing messages (since very few people use noses in emoticons).

You can go without rooting!

Use third party messaging app - Handcent etc.

Is there a way to customize the stock messaging app?

Nothing more to add besides the title. I have a black, gray, aqua theme going and I'm tired of chompsms screwing things up and handscent sucking period. The stock messaging app is white and I can't figure out how to change it. Any ideas?

See if you can push the Mms.apk from CyanogenMod. You can make it have a black background with white text and many other things.
This is going to sound like a newbie question, but how would I do that? I've pushed apks before via file manager, but never one that was from a rom.

I haven't tried it, but...
go to settings/applications and check "unknown sources" to allow software from outside the market.
get a rom that has the apk you want, rename the rom to .zip, unzip it, and pull the apk from system/app. Put it on your sdcard and install via file manager.

I got all the way up to the install park. Apparently it's the same apk as the regular messaging app (except the ability to customize it, of course) so when I got to the installation screen it asked me if I wanted to browse the apk or "uninstall". I tried uninstall so I could install the modded one, to no success (it is a baked in app).
I guess I'll have to wait til I decide to root (which really means, when a stable CM rom comes out).
Try Handcent. Its in the market..free and pretty cool.

Chomp is more stable, less laggy and consumes less battery life. My only issue with it is that whenever someone sends me a picture, it keeps bringing up the same picture someone sent me over a month ago. It sucks, but oh well. Until root, I'm sticking with it.

It might work if it had a higher version number or a different java name... sounds like a little project for the EZ Bake oven.
or you could root your phone.
Sent from my CyanogenMod Vision
Wait, did you say your phone wasnt't rooted? If not then there is nothing you can do because its a /system app, and to modify /system files you need root.
If you do have root, you can save the cm apk to your desktop and use
"adb remount
Adb push C:/Users/(name) /Desktop/Mms. apk /system/app/Mms. apk"
From a command prompt. Otherwise you can use a root file explorer to copy the app into the /system/app directory.

can Evo 4g LTE browser be ported to our phone?

Even after so many leaks, it seems like samsung engineers are not able to make the stock browser do text wrap, is it possible to extract the Evo 4g LTE and install it on our phone as it works perfectly on that phone.
I don't think so as it would be a sense system apk. If someone were to take the time to decompile the apk and make the necessary changes it might work. Dolphin hd is a very nice web browser, and it's free on the market.

Technically, it's possible. But without heavily modifying it to remove the Sense parts, you'll be left with a minimally functioning browser. Better off using a 3rd party one. You can use a custom launcher to change the icon if that's what bothers you. There's literally thousands of icon packs throughout the web.

Thank you, what bothers me is not the icon, but the Auto Fit ( wrap) text option, working in EL29, and not working in any of ICS leaks...If I install opera, it works in Opera , so I am sure its Samsung Issue..Makes me doubt samsung's team's expertise, and makes me lean more towards Evo LTE

pull the AOSP browser from cm9 and use something like file manager/root explorer to move it to the system/app folder.. change permissions and try that one, i use it and i think text wrap works pretty well for most websites. plus the extended quick controls are money.

Yes that is what I wanted...give me some time I will install EL29 take a screen shot and then install ICS an take a screen shot and will let you know...I am surprised that it works on EVO LTE out of the box and does not even after samsung guys working or not working on it for so long...There are a few things like this which I am using to decide which phone to buy next SG3 or EVO LTE as I measure the support and response of the manufacturer by these kind of user issues and consistency they provide.
EL29 vs ICS FF text auto wrap
here I am posting my screen shots...
ICS screen shots
ICS does not even allow pinch zoom..so not sure how to explain...but then that is also the main point...how can i stop pinch zooming suddenly only on this phone?
Have u tried ICS browser or ICS browser + from the playstore? Both are the stock browser but modified, they work well for me but I don't use tw ICS leaks I'm using AOkP

Vanilla Android apks

Is there any way I can get the standard ics Dialer/contacts/etc onto my phone? Samsung's are rather poorly designed.
you have to go into apps and clear defaults for twiz launcher then press home button and select the other option
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda app-developers app
That only changes the launcher to the vanilla ics launcher. But the phone/contacts app is still touchwiz. I'm looking for the same thing, no luck yet.
There's a good ICS messaging app and ICS Calendar app on the play store. No root required (although i'm rooted and i'm sure you are, too).
Download AOKP or CM9 and pull the apks from system/app and push them to system/app on your phone. reboot.

As it turns out, this was a really bad idea. Or, well, there was a really bad idea stuffed in there somewhere... maybe the part where I had to uninstall samsung contacts before I could shove the good one in. Anyway, my phone is pretty much in disaster mode right now. Even if I did have contacts installed, android.process.acore keeps stopping on me... which seems to not be good.
I imagine I'll flash CM9a6 now. wish me luck.

Stock keyboard issue

I hate to bring this up, but no one ever figured anytging about it. Anyways, the stock Samsung keyboard pretty much stopped auto correcting and having issues with a quarter of us who did the ota update to the version previous to lj7, before rooting that is. Now that I'm rooted, after several different ROMs, I can confirm that it's something deeper than what ROMs change.
As in something deeper I mean it's something that doesn't change from ROM to ROM and it remains there no matter what and is completely untouched by common updates. Only 1 happened to corrupt or break it in some way.
Does anyone have a clue of what could be causing this?
Please don't throw the standard nooby trouble shooting questions like factory reset, memory format, flash a different ROM, try to uninstall Samsung keyboard and reinstall a different version of it, just get a 3rd party app, etc. Done it all.
To be clear the issue is only on Samsung keyboards, I just want to find the underlying issue. If I was to go digging around blind in very base system files, I would probably brick my phone. Does any ideas cross anyone's mind besides giving up
Samsung's keyboard has autocorrect disabled it only does suggestions. You need to mod the app to actually get it to insert the words for you.

Yeah actually it is and has been since JB. You can decompile the keyboard apk and change the false value to true and activate autocorrect then recompile it. We've been doing it on the note 2 for a while now since by default the option is disabled at the code level.
Edit: here's the instructions to enable autocorrect and shorten the longpress delay http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2093588

Edit: Odd. under system/csc Features.XML, at the very bottom is the option to enable auto correct ( AutoCorrectionDisabled>true< ) i changed that to false and restarted but sadly no change.. =( i searched through the samsungIME.apk and i couldnt really find anything to disable or re-enable =/ Only a bunch of code id have to put in or just replace my apk with the attached which just rapidly force closes on me.

I'm pretty sure it has to do with Samsung's licensing from swiftkey, basically swiftkey wants you to buy the extra features on their keyboard, and only licensed samsung to use basic features such as slide to type and predictions, but not theming and extra features like autocorrect and delay time adjustment etc. Actually the newest swiftkey is identical to Samsung's keyboard only has more features and Samsung has all the code in the keyboard most of it is just disabled by default in the code, bunch of false statements added in to null them out in the settings

Look thru the thread I linked ^^ there and you'll find the code that need to be replaced or edited to get it all working. It's a little bit of a pain(or was) cuz the directions weren't entirely specific about which lines some of the edits were on. I ended up using the search feature in notepad++ to hunt out the lines to change or add. You could try pushing a note 2 keyboard into /system and set permissions on it, but back up your keyboard first incase the notes doesn't work. There's a bunch of themed ones with the AC and longpress mods over in the themes and apps section for sprints note 2. I think your rom needs to be deodexed for them to work. Just don't flash them cuz the updater script is for the note, extract the KB from the zip with something like ES file explorer and then copy it into system and set permissions to rw-r-r and rename your KB to samsungime.bak then reboot. If the note KB does the FC dance just rename your keyboard back to SamsungIME.apk and delete the note KB and reboot, or makesure you have a 3rd party KB installed for emergency use.

Google Stock Dialer/Contacts apks

Here's the stock google dialer and contacts app I pulled from my nexus 6 when i had it. It's not the motorola framework dialer and contacts, but pure google stock. They are in separate folders. I've also have a few that I've pulled from the web as well. I hate the ugly skin that lg uses, and miss the true material look from Google.
You HAVE to be rooted for these to even remotely work. Use root explorer or whatever app you use, mount rw and install as system apk (go to system>priv-app). Folder will need rwxr-xr-x permissions. Give app r-r-rw permissions. So far, contacts are working and I've gotten the google in-call ui to work by placing the apk in the lg in-call ui after renaming the original lg-ui. Can't get the dialer to install. LG skin is deeply rooted in thier framework, so it's kind of a pain. I'll keep digging into this to make some progress. In the mean time, if anyone else wants to chip in and help out, please do so.
In the link to my drive folder there will be 4 files. One of them is a flashable zip named GoogleContactsDialer (credits to whoever put this zip together. Wasn't me). Another should be the dialer in non flashable zip, and the other files are the respective standalone apks. I would suggest flashing the flashable zip, as it has the libs folder included.

**UPDATE**
Ok everyone, I have a quick second to give an update (getting up at 0430 is killing me right now lol) on things in reference to the dialer. Make sure you are using the flashable zip. The separate apks are ok, but the zip makes things easier.
Basically most hassle free method I have used to get it to be the primary dialer and contacts app is by using TB to freeze these 2 LG Dialer and Contact applications that are listed below.
*Call 4.60.79.10
*Contacts 4.56.18
I'm using KLWP and Nova for most of my homescreens. I'm linking the Google dialer apk to whatever phone KLWP icon using Nova Activities>Google Dialer>Phone(com.android.dialer.DialtactsActivity; make sure you select this one). For those that use Zooper, the same method would apply.
In reference to getting the dialer icon to show up in the app drawer on its own, I'm still working on that.

Sorry guys that I've been MIA. Work and personal life have been really busy. I didn't remove the LG apk but just froze them with TB. So far the LG Contacts app doesn't override which is good, and I've set Google Contacts as my default. I'm trying True Caller but honestly don't like it. The Google dialer kicks in but it's random, and it doesn't show in my Nova app drawer. I'll get back to working on this when things slow down for me.

np. glad to help
I wonder if one you that's had success with this might be able to offer some assistance...I flashed the Google contacts and dialer zip and froze the two LG files recommended by the OP and all call functionality was disabled. I could launch the Google dialer but could not receive calls. Did I miss a step?

Updated the post. Let me know if this helps you any. I'm still working on the dialer showing up in the app drawer or just being able to place the icon on the homescreen. Going to play around with different launchers on my next few days off starting Sunday.

Like you said, it is working - mostly. I no longer see the dreaded LG dialer (yippee!) but a couple of minor anomalies remain.
On an incoming call I do not get a full scree caller id and swipe to answer as I did on the N4 device;
Like you, I had to use Nova to create the desktop icon (which is no big deal I suppose);
When I bring up the dialer I see a "Speed Dial" tab but I don't see all my favorites (starred contacts). I tried clearing cache and data for the dialer but is not showing me the same starred contacts as the Contacts app;
Other than the above it seems to work quite well.
[ EDIT ] It seems that there is a difference between the contacts storage that LG maintains and what Google Contacts/Dialer maintains. I cleared data and cache for both, the LG Dialer and the LG Contacts app - note that in my case they were both frozen so I had to use ROM Toolbox to do this - and had the system re-sync contacts with Google. All of the sudden ALL my favorites show up as expected and, incoming caller Id is now displaying as it did on the old Nexus 4. Yippee! Apparently some minor issues can be corrected by reinitializing the contacts database on the phone.

Did you start out with a clean, well working system or could it have remnants of previous attempts to install a dialer? Most of my troubles came from the fact that I missed to clean somethng up from a previous attempt.
Essentially, I did not do much different from the OP. Starting with a clean system (I backup frequently with TWRP when I experiment with new things!) I flashed the zip file, rebooted, created the desktop icon for phone, froze the 2 LG modules with TiBu. I also copied the Google Dialer apk to the LGInCallUI folder in priv-app and renamed (but not deleted) the LG version which did not seem to make any difference to usage (I was hoping for a full screen caller Id).
As noted above, it seems to be working quite nicely with the 3 1 caveats I listed.
