Phone shuts down at 14% - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So, I bought another battery. Will this sort it?
Also, what's the usual procedure?
Should I charge the battery to full in the phone (turned off) then boot, set up, then charge again and reset battery stats?

The problem is that the battery control chip doesn't take into account that the battery ages.

I don't know what a new battery will do though.

I gathered that, but as the phone is going to a new user (my stepson) we got him a new battery anyway
I just wondered what the correct procedure is. I know you need to do a first charge with a new battery, as with a new phone, however, this phone obviously has a working ROM already on it.
So, the phone is charging now, switched off. Should I turn it on, use a little, then use the battery calibration app to delete the stats and then drain to 0%?

Well, that assumption is probably inherited from the NiHM batteries in the past, because it's not needed with Li-Ion batteries. In fact charging to 80% is better than charging to 100% and keeping it plugged in.

Just charge it and use it for a full cycle. If it shuts down at 15%, you can try the battery calibration from the thread I mentioned above. If it doesn't, you're battery capacity is the same as the one the battery chip has calculated, which is good.

So, why does the first charge take so long?
This thing is still charging and it's been on the charger for 3 hours, whereas usually it'd be charged fully by now.
Been like that for every Li-Ion battery I've ever had (including my S3, took around 6 hours to charge, usually takes 3).

Just to clarify, I don't intend on leaving it past the green light. As soon as it says it's full I'll be taking it off charge and not trying ot overcharge it. But I still have the orange charging light after 3-4 hours.

To be honest, I don't know. Maybe it's a safety to prevent overcharging. Coincidentally, I've got exactly the same issue now. I asked about it in the calibration thread. I suppose it's normal, but I'm not sure about that.

[Q] Instant discharge.

So, I'm on my Evo today, playing a game (Air Strike). My battery is at 93% when I picked the phone up to play, and the phone is plugged in. Suddenly, with no warning what-so-ever, my phone shuts off. Of course a mini-freak out and many "wtf's" ensue. No warning, no signs, even the led went off. I pulled the battery, put it back, then plugged the phone in again. After that it gave me the blinking light indicating the battery was too low to turn on. After a few minutes charging she came back on and battery was at 5%.
How the hell does a battery go from 93% to 0% in less than 5 minutes, and give no warning at all?? Anybody else ever have this problem?
Wow I've have never heard or that happening before. Maybe a glitch in the battery stash? Did it take awhile to charge up to 100%? Can you reproduce the issue again?

I had this problem with my older phone once. The battery itself may have a problem or your phone is not getting charged properly.
Try These :
1) Try charging the phone overnite from the Wall charger (Not through USB of your computer)
2) If the above does not work, and you have access to another evo battery, then try using that.(try using a friends battery and charger for a day. ) (Ofcourse needless to say the charger and battery must be for Evoonly )
In my case, my phone started working fine again after getting my battery & charger replaced.
Probably shouldn't worry about it too much just yet. Could be something as simple as your battery meter was mis-calibrated. The meter itself is software so it can easily be wrong/off. If it continues you may have a bad battery.
Sounds to me like something is wrong. Did you just get the phone or have you had it?
Idk... The phone had been plugged in for most of the day (hadn't gone anywhere. Lazy day lol) And like I said, the led went completely out as well.
Haven't had the problem again, so we'll see I guess....

I've seen some posts about the Evo battery shutting off the charge when its being used. Were you using your Evo while it was charging?
If the battery doesn't seem to be giving you percentages that are accurate, you might want to recalibrate your battery.

If you're experiencing higher than normal battery drain, try the following:
1. Charge the phone to full battery; let it keep charging until the battery says it is fully charged. Do not just wait until the light is green, it isn't always fully charged, causing a lot of inaccuracies. (You can check by going to: Settings -> About Phone -> Status -> Battery Level = Full.)
2. Boot to recovery and wipe battery stats.
(To have the most accurate of battery stats, reboot the phone immediately after wiping the battery stats and wait for your ROM to boot completely to the desktop. Once your entire boot is done and you have full access to the phone, go ahead and pull the charger and continue.)
3. Do not charge the phone until after draining the battery completely, resulting in it automatically shutting off. Take out the battery, and keep trying to turn on your phone until it will not turn back on at all.
4. Recharge the phone completely and then use as you normally would.
This is a method that has been proven to work, I am sure there are other ways. My battery lasts longer after doing this and the reading is much more accurate. It might be advisable to do this after every ROM install if you want the most battery life and most accurate battery reading by the phone's software.

[Q] Phone Charging Question

Problem:
I have been reading as many posts as possible but I haven't come across my exact situation. I apologize if this is posted elsewhere.
I am running a rooted Dinc using CyanogenMod 7.0.3. If I charge the phone while it's powered on, the amber led turns green as soon as the battery indicator hits 100%. However, recently I've noticed that if the battery is close to being full, say 90%, and i power it off to charge it, it actually takes longer for the amber led to turn green. It might take 20-30 minutes longer.
I've also noticed the amber light turn green when the indicator only showed 92%. In trying something different I also noticed that if I charge the phone while it's powered on, then turn the phone off, the led goes amber and takes another 20 minutes to turn green again (I might be accidentally bump charging in this example but I'm not sure).
Attempted Solution:
I've read that a battery recalibration might help. I tried one method that requires the battery to be pulled after a full charge, but my phone won't boot while plugged into the wall if there's no battery. Then I tried booting into recovery, where I found an option to reset the battery stats... which I just did about 5 minutes ago.
I'm going to see how things go tomorrow, but is this normal? Has anyone else experienced these things? Thanks.

The kernel and the hardware charge it in different ways. That's why there are differences. DInc is famous for ending charging before the battery reads full. There's already a thread on that. there's not much point in getting hung up on how that thing charges. Be glad yours isn't like mine; a battery that discharges faster than it charges. Seriously.

Before I had a fast charge kernel (thanks Chad!) Using GPS with the stock VZW car charger, my battery would go down while it was on the charger!

On AOSP roms, the LED will turn green at 90% and charge slower from 90%-100%. Perfectly normal, and I think on any rom it will charge slowly from 90%-100% to protect the battery.
The battery will charge further when you turn the phone off, what you described is what's known as bump charging. If you do this, you should notice a slower drop from 100%-90% than usual, because the battery is charged to a "true" 100%. When the phone is on and charging (above 90%), it simply keeps the battery above 90% even if it says it's fully charged, and this is why the inc is notorious for the quick 100%-90% drop.
If you do a bump charge and then clear the battery stats and use the battery calibration app will you need to bump charge again or will it know what the true 100% capacity is and keep the droid lasting longer. Not noticing much of a diffrence when i went from 1300 battery to a 1500. May get a bigger batter that'll fit the stock battery door cause I'm trying to get the best battery life i can get.
Thanks guys, I appreciate the help. I think something else that has thrown me off is that before I rooted the phone I wasn't able to see the actual battery percentage in numbers... all I could see was the battery icon. Things are now making more sense.
After recalibrating my battery I bump charged the other day and I was able to get almost 2 days out of my phone on light usage. Without bumping, I was able to end my day yesterday at 50% under my normal usage. Which is a noticeable improvement. Normally I end the day with about 10-20%. The big test will be once I go back to work next week. The cell reception is real spotty in my classroom, which I know makes the cell radio work harder.

Maybe you've noticed the messages I've sent to Unofficial BravoS thread of Coolexe's (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1200517&page=51) which is the ROM I use.
The issue is, the battery discharges rapidly. Actually, if you check mV values, it doesn't discharge rapidly, but if you look at percentages, there is a huge inconsistency. I used Battery Monitor Widget to log the battery performances last night, and saw these horrible results:

These are the last lines of the log, before the phone shuts down. As you can see, the phone gone to 0% from 34% in one minute! No low battery warnings or whatsoever..
Funny thing is, this doesn't happen in StarBurst ROM (which is a Froyo based one). Do you reckon this is a GingerBread issue or something? I saw some other people complaining about their phone shutting down at 20% as well.
So, what do you suggest?
when you look at the voltage there isnt that much drain, so its only a displaying problem
wipe battery stats and maybe recalibrate the battery
but first one should fix it

It seems more "smooth" discharge now. Right now, I'm charging my phone off; going to turn on phone once it reaches "green light" with charger on, and plug it off once phone booted. Maybe then, it can know what's maximum and minimum.
So far, I tried to charge my phone to full and erase batterystats.bin but, as you can see at the first post, it didn't work well.. On the other hand, the phone charged-discharged only once in this ROM, you think it could be better if I've given a "second chance"?

only thing i want to say is, dont do that deep drains!
recharge at least 5%! you kill your battery, lithium-ion batterys get serious damage from deep drains

I know, but when phone thinks it's 30% and not warn me, how can I do it?
In order to calibrate the battery meter - FYI the battery itself cannot be calibrated, as Li-Ion batteries have a very low memory compared to old Ni-Cd etc. batteries - you have to go through the following procedure:
1) charge the battery to 100%;
2) let the battery discharge until the phone shuts itself down;
3) plug the wall charger into the phone, boot the phone up then charge the battery to 100% without interruptions.
If the above procedure does not yield the expected results, you can try fully charging the phone (LED showing green) with it completely turned off (after completely draining it). Again, the charging procedure should not be interrupted.
Source: personal experience - had to do this twice after installing new ROMs, as the phone was shutting down at ~14% (working like a charm now).
Regarding the matter of battery wear because of complete discharges, Li-Ion batteries do indeed have a lower cycle count than old-school batteries, but the standard charge/discharge number a Li-Ion battery can take is ~350, so you can't damage the battery pack by doing a full cycle per month (required to keep the battery meter accurate).

Today I realized that it my concern was a quick one. Today, I discharged battery to 0 percent, plugged the AC charger while it's OFF and charged it for around 2h22m until Led-green-full; then turned on the phone with charger plugged and plugged it off just after the boot process. After that, I let the phone to discharge (I helped it a little )
I actually saw "Plug your charger" warning this time, and according to Bat. Mon. Widget, it gone down until 13%! If I do compare the mV values with the old ones, I can see that somehow the phone does learn which mV value correspond to which percentage better.
Even though it gone from 13% to 0% in two minutes, it's at least better than 30% to 0%.. Also, when I check the readings after I plugged in, I saw that percentage-voltage matching is slightly higher, showing that the phone now shows lower percentage for the same voltage - which shows that it learns percentage better.
After one or two charge-discharge cycle, I think it'll learn absolute 0
BTW; the battery says 3.4V 1400mAh and my maximum voltage is 4160mV (100%) and minimum is 3415mV (0%). Are these values normal, you think?
PS: What I'd recommend from anyone who loves flashing ROMs as much as I do is: AFTER YOU FLASHED A NEW ROM, CHARGE YOUR BATTERY TO FULL (100%) AND ERASE THE BATTERY STATS. AFTER THIS, NEVER, I SAY, NEVER ERASE YOUR BATTERY STATS FOR LONG TIME IN ORDER FOR YOUR PHONE TO LEARN STATS BETTER! Erase after long time, say 3 months for wear effects to be accounted, but well, I think you should be fine even after you don't do this

EDIT: Phone shutdown at 13% after this, but I think it'll do better in time..
Can't Calibrate the Widget
I am having a similar issue with my htc aria. Problem is that it gets to about 78% and then won't go any higher. It even shows (in Battery Monitor Widget)
"Discharging" and "AC plugged". I have let it sit plenty long enough to be fully charged and then completely discharged it (until it shut itself down, which was not 0%) and recharged until it reaches 78% again and stops charging. I'm guessing it is so far out of whack that it says I'm at 78% but I am really at 100%.
The widget says to charge to 100% and then drain completely to 0% to calibrate. I can't do either from what I can tell. So what to do?

Quick tip - let the phone charge for another hour or so after the light goes green (when charging it while powered off). I've read that the light goes green at about 95%. It takes another hour for the phone to really charge to 100%. That's because Li-Ion batteries use two stages to charge: a fast one and a slow one. More details here.

P.S. - It also took me two complete charge/discharge cycles to fully calibrate my battery meter after switching from FroYo to Gingerbread.
@vkyjackie - Try fully charging the phone while powered off. If it still doesn't fully charge (LED green), then you might have an issue with either the battery pack or the wall charger.

Battery won't charge past 98%

I have now done three cycles now drained to 1% and put on charge over night when I unplug and check the phone it says 98% and drops 2-3% within 5 mins of use. But if I plug it back in it will then go back to 100%. Anyone else?

There have been threads about this already. Batteries, once charged fully, cannot 'keep charging', so they will stop charging until it is low enough to charge again.
This protects the battery from all sorts of nasty and evil things.
^ precisely. Batteries shouldn't be pegged at 100% and continue to be charged. The firmware lets it drain down then charge up again. You can just get 'unlucky' and unplug at a point where its discharging and at 98%.
I remember that happening with the Nexus S. I'm thinking it must be a Samsung thing. It's just one of those weird OEM things like, Motorola phones measuring the battery in 10% intervals.
All manufacturers charge their batteries this way but there are many ways to mask that process. People apparently want to see a fully charged phone when they plug it off the charger. They don't mind that their phone drops to something between 95% and 100% in a matter of minutes as long as it's "full" upon disconneting. Seems Google just displays the correct charge instead of pretending to be on 100%.

Pretty much. The G2 with stock firmware (and from what I remember with the Evo 4G w/ stock), HTC charges to 100%, discharges back to 90%, and charges back up again. etc.. The LED charge indicator turns green at 90% (so according to them, anything about 90% is a "full charge").
You can see this in regular use. There are days where my phone sits at 100% for hours, and others where it only takes an hour to tick down do 99%, even with the same usage. Just depends what "state" the battery is at when you pull it off charge in the morning.

[Q] First time battery charging

Hello,
So I am going to get HTC One X next week. Though, I have one question. Should I charge it first time for a long period or can I turn it on in shop, just to check if everything is okay and etc. I just want to have the maximum battery life, possible. Thanks for your answers

I would get it home and stick it on charge until at least the light turns great. A few people are suggesting leave it for at least another 20-30 mins after this too if you can. I definitely wouldn't turn it on in the store; and HTC also recommend to fully charge before use.

You're fine to turn it on and give it a quick test. All Lithium Ion/Polymer batteries have a partial charge for shipping as leaving it completely flat for long periods of time will damage it. Don't run the battery down though.
You should still charge it fully before using it properly however. Once the phone is fully charged then you can unplug it and use it. You don't need to leave it "charging" for 12+ hours even if the phone thinks it is fully charged.

You should still charge it fully before using it properly however. Once the phone is fully charged then you can unplug it and use it. You don't need to leave it "charging" for 12+ hours even if the phone thinks it is fully charged.

Its normally better for the battery to run down to a low level before re-charging if you keep topping the battery up when it gets to 50 - 60 you could end up damaging the battery.

That is with NiCad and NiMH batteries. Lithium Ion batteries don't have the memory effect and actually prefer partial discharge cycles.
If anything odd happens then you can recalibrate the battery monitoring data by discharging it fully then charging it. In general however, you shouldn't do this every cycle.
My second phone that arrived took around 3 hours 15 mins for its charge light to turn green; I unplugged it after 4 hours and I was actually happy with the battery life on that one. My third one arrived earlier and the green light came on after 1 hour and 25 mins.
Guess they started with different battery levels? I will leave it on charge for another hour or so as I'm going in a meeting anyway; therefore when I turn it on its initial charge will have been around 3 hours long.
I believe you can't over charge the battery anyway, so once the green light it on there is a chance its probably not taking in anymore power. If thats the case leaving it plugged in once the light has changed is just irrelevant?

Li ion batteries are protected from overcharging, as overcharge could actually cause it to overheat and catch fire or explode. Not sure if the protection is in the OS, hardware, or battery. But basically charging will stop when the battery is 100% and saturated, then when the battery dips below 100%, it will top it off again. Not sure about the One X (still waiting for the AT&T variant), but on other HTC phones, you will sometimes actually see the battery meter drop down from full to 99% when its on the charger, then read full again.
So leaving it on the charger doesn't hurt things much (although technically partial charges are better for the battery long term). Leaving the battery charging for longer ensures the "saturation" charge is applied, which may not happen if you quick charge to full, then disconnect.

You shouldn't purposely discharge Li ion batteries until the phone shuts off. In theory, protections in the OS and the battery's safety circuit are supposed to prevent over-discharge. But its not fail-safe, and I've seen reports of plenty of Android phones where the battery fails to take a charge after being discharged to shutdown. If this happens to you, the only way to bring the battery back to life is with a special battery meter with boost function (which most people do not have access to) or buy a new battery (which is of course a problem on the One X, due to the non-removable battery).
Its rare, but it does happen, and there is no real benefit to running the battery until the phones shuts down. The battery meter is not remotely accurate enough to justify purposely discharging below 10 or even 15%, just for sake of calibration. Charge to full, leave it a while (30 min), then use until 15% charge or so. Repeat a couple times to fully calibrate the battery meter.
To answer the original question, powering the phone on (when you first get it) for a short time is ok. Just go through the battery meter calibration as I described as soon as possible thereafter, and it should be fine.

Brilliant post redpoint73; appreciate you taking the time. Just got out of my meeting so my device has been on charge for around an extra hour since seeing the green light so I will be taking it off charge now to set it up etc... Total first time charge time will have been 2 hours 40 mins.
It's likely it will be down to 15%-20% before I put it on charge again tonight as will be syncing all the apps and data back on to the device as well as giving it a good bit of usage to check things out. Will no doubt then be on charge for around 7 hours through the night whilst turned off, and I will do this for the first 3/4 days (same as previous one). My last battery was good so hoping for the same again.

It is pretty poor design if your phone does kill itself if you hit 0% though as that isn't too unusual of an event for a phone. I've never seen any phone which did that but I agree it could happen.
