Has anyone tested airplane mode on any Jelly Bean roms to any extent? I've tried the CM10 Kang, Bugless Beast, AOKP V1, and now CNA and so far on every single one of them, airplane mode doesn't seem to work.
Basically, I keep my phone in airplane mode for 9 hrs straight while I am at work without touching it. I've tried each of these roms on airplane mode AND with the radios on, and on every single one, the battery usage after 9 hrs is within 1-2% in both cases. So for instance, CNA will be at 78% +/- 2% after 9 hrs on my phone, regardless of whether or not I use airplane mode. Changing kernels does not make a difference either.
I can't imagine this can be working properly as before I switched to Jelly Bean, I'd be at 92% after 9 hrs of airplane mode. Something does not seem right...anyone have any insight/ideas/similar experience? Or better yet, does anyone know a JB rom on which airplane mode appears to be working properly?

Are you actually seeing the airplane icon in the top bar when switching?
With the GN, the big battery hog is the screen. Unless you have a weak signal at work where it is constantly searching/dropping the signal, then airplane mode will not save that much battery.

no, its not an issue with the screen, as there is no usage between the time i unplug the phone and the time i get it out at the end of the day...the screen is only on long enough to switch to airplane mode and that's it.
it is def related to jelly bean as under the exact same circumstances, i have lost only about 2-4% of the battery in the same time i am now losing 20-25% of total battery.
and yes, the airplane mode icon IS showing, and if i go to settings, it shows the airplane mode box as checked, the radios arent functioning in that i can't access anything, so airplane mode appears to be working, but something still is not quite right as the battery usage is literally identical whether it is on or off.

i realize that, but its not really the point. the issue is JB battery drain vs ICS in airplane mode. i'm not looking for a work around, but rather am trying to understand the issue.
Not sure on the GN but on the Nexus S the JB kernel has KSM enabled. This feature drains a bit more battery because of the extra CPU cycles to scan through memory etc.

The kernel I am using has KSM but that's not the issue either. Here's the deal...
When I toggle off data and sync, battery will be 91-92% after a full day of work with no screen time. Under the same conditions, airplane mode will leave me at ~76%. That makes me think the phone is still trying to tx/rx/sync when in airplane mode, hence the battery drain. I never tested turning off data and sync in any JB ROMs except my current one (CNA), but I suspect the results would be the same.
Surely this is an easy fix for devs...isnt it? We need airplane mode to also disable sync and/or data then we should be good to go.

I use airplane mode everyday and get very little battery drain. Maybe get 1% drop every few hours. It has been the same on stock JB and on CNA. I haven't tried any other Roms.
Works fine on CNA for me. Noticeably less battery consumption when my phone is idle in airplane mode.
I keep airplane mode on for 9 hours a day at work as well. I am on AOKP and lose at most 3% battery.

to be fair. If your putting your phone on airplane mode AND not using the screen..then your not touching it at all and can't get a call or text so its basically off already.
Turning it off seems like a logical course of action.
using airplane mode on paranoidandroid's jelly bean and seems to be working fine (waiting on sim from att )

very odd that you other guys arent seeing the same issue. i've experienced it on multiple ROMs (one of the CM10 kangs, BB, AOKP v1, and now CNA) with different kernels (JB, franco, and trinity) and did a full wipe on my latest switch to CNA. now i am very confused

I was just havin a bit of fun. I realize what your intentions were and I see why you have concerns, there's something wrong there. Just thought it was curious for someone to leave the phone on in airplane mode with no screen use, when in fact off is the same sort of state but doesn't drain the battery.
CNA for me also. Left JFK today at noon landed in SFO 6 hours later and lost 3% made it a point not to turn screen on at all during the flight. Not that this helps you just thought id mention it ....

Hey everyone, last weekend I unrooted and wiped my phone, went back to factory settings, rerooted and installed CM6.1 RC2. I've been enjoying it so far (because I hate Sense UI) but I've got a couple of questions that need answered. Hopefully you all can help me.
CM6
1. Is there a setting to turn off always-on mobile data? I cannot find it.
2. For some odd reason, I cannot turn on bluetooth. I've not had a problem with turning on bluetooth with any other rom. In fact, I remember testing bluetooth the night I installed CM6. Is this an issue with the phone or the rom?
3. No matter how much I turn off Auto-Sync, it turns back on. What is doing this?
Battery Life
1. On average, I get around 10-14 hours battery life a day, maybe a little more if I barely use my phone all day. I've heard a lot of people say that an ideal battery drain with the screen off should be 1-2%/hour, but mine will drain from 6% to even 10% in 40-50 minutes (EDIT: Currently 75% battery left, unplugged for 2hrs 30min, done nothing but use the browser for 5 minutes, download something, and install it)! I use systempanel and spareparts to monitor which apps could possibly be doing this, but none look like they're eating up too much of the battery. I check Facebook 4-5 times a day, use the browser, and check Gmail. I don't use Google Talk. My screen brightness is around 30-40% and I have underclocked when the screen is off with setcpu. What is draining my battery so fast? It's a shame that there are so many cool things to do with this phone but I can't do them in fear of my battery dying before the end of the day

1. no. you could however turn data roaming off or use a program to accomplish this such as "tasker"
2. what do you mean you cant turn it on? what does it do when you enable it? use the widget in your notification drop down.
3. turn off background data as well and that should fix your problem.
and as for you other question. 10-14hrs is perfectly normal for battery life on cm6.1. and fyi: its RC1. there is no RC2 for 6.1 as of yet

Ah thanks for correcting my mistake, and answering my questions. My battery life isn't terrible per se, but I guess I was asking more on how I could make it better (and if I had a rogue app/other battery eater), especially because I see people claiming anywhere from 20-40 hours with a few tweaks.
And regarding the bluetooth issue, it just won't turn on. The option grays out for a few seconds like it usually does when it's initializing, and then it doesn't turn on. The notification widget method does not work either.
Also, there's no other way to turn off auto-sync? I just think it would be a hassle having to turn background data back on everytime I want to use the market. I use JuiceDefender, too, could there possibly be a conflict between the app and my phone's settings?
Man i'm with you here, I use CM6.1 too and love it but the first 30 minutes i unplug the phone from charging i'm already at like 90% battery =/

I had the same problem with my Bluetooth recently. When I try to search for devices the phone locks up and I have to pull the battery. Wonder if this is a kernel issue. I am on snap

Another thing; I've got a friend on Stock 2.2 Sense (battery sucking widgets filling the home screen, etc) with 100% brightness and mobile data constantly on and he gets better battery life than me (20+ hours!) What is going on!?!?!

I couldn't believe it either, he had 3G on all day and everything and we barely get any signal at all in class. On for almost 8hrs with more than 70% left. I was at about 53%
I am looking to buy the Nitro HD for WiFi only use and maybe occasional prepaid use. I will flash to some deodexed ROM or maybe CM9 so I am not so concerned about software issues in the stock ROM.
What I am more concerned about is - how are the cameras for Skype/Google Video etc?
Any way to turn off all radios except WiFi by default everytime the phone starts up?

I'll chime in here, I use mine as a wifi only device. As far as Skype/google video goes, video calls are great. I don't have a Sim card in mine and the mobile settings are greyed out which I'm assuming the cellular is off.
I'm currently running the latest cm9 nightlies and the device keeps getting better and better.
Battery life is definitely better than gingerbread. Battery life is within reason for a device this powerful while on wifi. The only battery drain I've found is being out of range of a wifi area. It seems the device goes on over drive looking for wifi and within an hour, majority of your battery is dead. This might be a CM9 issue, I'm not sure on that. Just remember to turn off your wifi when out and about.

The super screen is eye candy. Using wifi it will last for 5-7 hours, while using 3g only for 2-3 hours.
For these two reasons, i often use it only as WIFI.

I’m looking for help with a rather strange problem. I’m getting a lot of awake time in Android OS. I installed BetterBatteryStats and noticed it was the service BTLowPower that was doing a lot of kernel wakelocks.
I turned bluetooth off a couple of days (and have rebooted in the meantime even) but still the top service in kernel wakelocks is BTLowPower by a very large margin ... how can this be if bluetooth is turned off ?

Do you guys have other Bluetooth devices around? I have a Motorola S805 headset as well as a cheapo BT2.0 dongle from DealExtreme.
I typically don't have the headset turned on unless it's connected to the computer, but what I'm finding is that if I just leave my phone with the dongle turned off and the headset turned off then I don't get the BTLowPower battery drain.
If I turn the dongle on, and turn on the headset then I typically get the BTLowPower battery drain in my GNex. I have to reboot the phone for it to go away. I'm not really sure the exact sequence of events to cause the drain to occur, but I feel like it's definitely related to turning on and off my S805 headset or being around the dongle.
There might be other bluetooth devices around (such as phones of a colleague or something), however the bluetooth on my phone is turned OFF and I still keep getting the BTLowPower in kernel wakelocks Today for example it kept my phone awake for over 10 hours
Anyone ? I keep having this problem ...

I'm running a Toro Gnex with the Vanir AOSP ROM. It's buttery smooth, and I've had no problems at all, other than this specific kernel wakelock. Same scenario as the OP.

I've been reading about this all morning. I run Automateit Pro and have it go into airplane mode at night. After losing 25% battery overnight, the investigation began. BTlowpower was keeping the phone awake. It looks like airplane mode can be the culprit, possibly in combination with Wifi set to always on. I am set up to turn Bluetooth off a couple of minutes after going into airplane model tonight, I'll follow up with my findings over the weekend.

Did anyone try to hard reset their phone ? I called Samsung but I got the standard reply to hard reset my phone, I haven't tried it yet because I doubt it would work and I have a lot of authenticators on it and it's a bit of a hassle. But if any of you guys already tried it I would love to hear if it worked ! Thanks !

BTlowpower issue solved by turning Bluetooth on and then off again after Airplane mode activated. However, that caused another issue - modem_usb_gpio_wake to crush my battery. Doing more testing today to resolve that one - will post again when that one is solved.

After testing different configurations this weekend, it looks like turning off sync causes these 2 kernel wakelocks. I tested 2 states: Airplane mode + no Wi-fi, and no data (no Wi-fi + no Wireless data, voice signal on). In either instance, the wakelock occurs with sync off. Leaving sync on finally achieved the low overnight battery drain (< 5%) I've been looking for. Regardless, to avoid battery drain after shutting data off:
Turn Bluetooth On and then Off again. If you are using airplane mode (this may be overkill), also turn Wireless Data On and then Off again.
Let me know if this helps.

Just to make sure I understand, you say the solution is to turn bluetooth on and off again after turning off airplane mode ?
Just for completeness sake, this is my situation: overnight I turn on airplane mode and I sometimes have the wakelock draining my battery during the day (but not always). Draining doesn't occur during the night as while it's on airplane mode I'm also charging it.
I will try every morning when I turn airplane mode off to turn bluetooth on and off again afterwards for a few days and see if that helps. Let me know if I misunderstood.

I actually have a workaround that works for me. During the night I turn off my phone instead of using airplane mode. I no longer have BTLowPower and I also am able to successfully connect every time very quickly with bluetooth to my carkit, which previously was very flaky. It's definitely a standard issue though with the galaxy nexus, I can reproduce it on 2 other galaxy nexi as well.

I can't help but wonder if the issue is at all related to the kernel I'm using (LeanKernel v4.7), or if perhaps a resolution to the problem could be solved by a modification within the kernel code. The ROM I'm running is BAMF Paradigm v2.4, which is based on AOSP v4.1.2. Like the rest of you, I'd really like to get this fixed.

After three days or so, the issue seemed to go away on its own. I didn't make any changes to any of the apps I was running, nor did I update the kernel. I really have no clue what took care of it for me, but I haven't seen it since.

im on a stock rom not rooted and new battery and old battery both discharge really fast. Totally dead in 5-6hrs light use. Im guessing there is a hardware issue with the phone as this isnt normal. Any ideas?
lets see I did a factory reset after Jellybean update
changed the battery for a new one
biggest power drain is showing up as screen 33-39%
I have the thing on power saving mode and mobile data I turn off when not in use.
only thing I can think of that I didnt try is flashing another radio. But I doubt thats it because ive put it in airplane mode and it still looses power fast.

Get Better Battery Stats and check your wake locks. A lot of information in that thread. Might have a rogue app draining you.
Edit: also screen on is always going to be your biggest drain. Keep brightness down as much as you can. App called screen filter is good for achieving lower brightness than system allows. You could try the ktoonsz kernel, undervolted as well. Turning off sounds in settings (key press, vibrate, etc as well). Toggle data and WiFi when not using. These are just some basic suggestions.

This is my second s3 and the first one never had a problem going 10-12 hrs normal use. Im thinking it is a hardware issue as I did a factory reset and it still persists on fast draining.
Edit.. I just disable google talk maybe that was causing it?

well after the screen 40% we have android OS @ lower 30%

I was getting the same battery life, took out my SD-Card, and I'm getting 7 hours on screen time with stock battery.

lol sd card?? well I tried it anyway and no, it still drains like a pissing racehorse. Ive noticed this phone gets pretty warm sometimes even with light use. Im not sure what is causing this but must be a factor in why the battery life is so poor. When I talk on phone, not very often, the ear piece actually gets hot. Im gonna send this puppy to samsung and see what they can do.
GSam Battery Monitor can offer better details about your battery usage, including wakelocks, cpu usage, etc.. It's more detailed than what Android offers.
I'd also recommend using an AOSP based rom as they include out any carrier/Samsung services that may adversely affect your battery life, particularly in a fringe coverage area or with many sync and push items. I'd also stay away from powersave mode for the time being.
If you want to know for sure, I'd do something like this:
- update PRL on current rom
- wipe and format everything in CWM
- flash rom as per developer suggestions
- wipe battery stats
- boot and do not sign in with your Google account (very important!)
- do not install or restore any apps
- turn off auto-sync and leave data on
- enable auto brightness
- confirm that phone signal is somewhere between -50 and -90dbm
- turn off phone and charge overnight
- turn on in the morning and use normally for the day
- install GSAM if issues persist
Please post back with updates.
It could be a hardware problem also you know.... if something ground off in the phone then the battery will drain faster than anything....I had a n96 with a grounded problem and it use to dead in 4 hrs....

I have a LTE Note II and have had this battery drain on standby where wifi will absolutely destroy my battery. This has been going on for months and months and I'm just not sure if Samsung are ever going to resolve this and it is quite the pain in the arse.
I've done many tweaks to my phone, and all location services are off. Also, I've set it as a static IP, but nothing seems to help. I think this is related to the wlan_rx_wake wakelock? I get the impression my phone is responding to the wifi and getting woken up constantly.
Does anyone else experience this and do you have any suggestions?
P.S. please don't mention my apps causing it. It definitely is not. I know my way around Android and also, my Nexus 4 with the same setup (but location + google now turned ON) absolutely annihilates my Note II battery life on standby. This is clearly a Samsung problem that they have ignored for the best part of a whole year, and it seems to be related to wifi.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It could be a bad modem/connection. What is your configuration?

No exact figures but I have been observing it for months now and it hasn't been the case with any other phone I use. With wifi on, it'll drain around 20% overnight. With Wifi off, it'll drain 5 or so %. With Wifi on on every other phone I own/owned, it will barely drain at all overnight.

That's not bad, it improves battery usage. I don't recognize your problem. Does the phone go into deep sleep with wifi on? Which rom do you use?

Stock ROM. And yeah, but it is constantly being woken up.
Sorry for the bump, but this hasn't changed.
I'm not sure if this is to do with just the N7105, but it is something that just won't go away. I'm now finding I lose between 20 and 30% overnight (around 7 hours) with wifi on, or about 10% with data on. With these both turned off but the phone radio still being on, it only drops about 2% in the same time. This was tested with bluetooth/gps and sync turned off.
I don't really have the time to write up everything that I have tried, but suffice to say I have tweaked the phone a lot over the past few months trying to sort this out, but nothing works.
Here is a quick summary of the stuff I have done.
Firstly, I have to run a stock rom and kernel because there is an app I need that will not work on custom roms/kernels. It also doesn't work on root but I have found a procedure to toggle unroot/root when need be and it works fine. Therefore I'm stuck on 4.1.2 as I want to be rooted but I cannot use any custom rom or kernels.
I have tried factory wiping the phone/installing later versions of 4.1.2, etc etc and the same problems still exists with a freshly wiped phone and no apps installed. This problem also doesn't happen with my Nexus 4 or any other phone I have owned with the same setup, so I am very certain it is not due to a misbehaving app.
I have frozen a lot of bloat with titanium backup, I have hibernated a hell of a lot of stuff with greenify (including system app where there are no perceivable negative consequences)
I have added a few tweaks to the build.prop such as to disable fast dormancy and a few other supposed power saving ones which are meant to help with the msm_hsic wakelock.
There are many other things such as setting a static IP, and also tweaking with my router based on some advise I found on these forums. Nothing much has helped.
Location services and google now are off, and I'm not using the Samsung bloatware apps.
I use betterbatterystats and the partial wakelocks are fine. Very low infact.
However, IMO it is two "kernal wakelocks" which are causing me the problem.
wlan_rx_wake - in regards to the wifi
mdm_hsic_pm0 - in regards to the data
These are by no means outrageously high. My estimation is perhaps 10 mins wake up time and around 2000 "expire time" (whatever that means) every 3 hours or so. However, these two are always the highest kernel wakelock depending on if i'm using wifi (wlan_rx_wake) or data (mdm_hsic_pm0). My phone is also not being kept awake too long too in general.. at a guess around 3 hours awake time for every 2 hours screen on time for every 15-20 hours.
I can't remember if these kernel wakelocks were super duper high in the past, and the fixes I tried actually lowered them, but I still notice this massive Idle drain when on data or wifi (just over 1% per hour - or 2-3% per hour respectively).
In regards to the Wifi.. I suspect that packets are being sent from my router which are constantly waking up my phone. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to solve this problem with any of the router-side fixes I've tried.
This leads me to suspect that the wifi and data radio of the N7105 is power hungry, or I've had a faulty unit since day one. I keep hearing about this stellar battery life for this phone but, for me, the best I've ever got is around 20 hours. This may sound good but the problem is it is 20 hours with 6 hours screen on time, or 20 hours with 2 hours screen on time. This doesn't seem to make a difference where I should be getting two days when I only have 2 hours screen on time.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, and any experiances of others with the N7105 may help find out if it indeed is more power hungry. I'd also like to add that my network does not support 4G yet so this is all on 3G and NOT LTE.

I ain't expert...
but, I would suggest like this :
Go to wifi, press menu and then Advanced (advanced setting of the wifi).
uncheck/untick "Scanning always available"
"Keep wifi on during sleep" = set to Never.
uncheck / untick "auto network switch btwen wifi network and mobile networks"
all these helps me to minimize the usage of wifi during night times (when I sleep). Anyway, device also need to have a deepsleep
