Anyone else experience this? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

It is weird, whenever my GNex is in my pocket, it will turn itself off. When I take it out of my pocket I have to hold power and it powers on. I am currently running miui.us 2.8.24 but this happens even on stock ROM and it only does it if it is in my pocket.

No. Only once in a while. Just wondering if it was maybe the way it sits in my pocket or if normal

Sounds rather far fetched, but is it possible you enable the power menu because of the way it's in your pocket, and then somehow once in a while the screen registers a tap on the power off button?
If it only happens once in a while and your device is otherwise OK, I can't think of any other reason.

Far out theory, but if your rom is running a custom kernel, do you have a screen off profile? If the CPU downclocks lower then it's capable of staying stable (or with too low of voltage) the phone will often shut off.

This was a problem with my old HTC EVO 3D, and the way I solved it was by buying a new battery, I am nt sure if it will get fixed by getting a new battery in your case tho.

That appears to have been the issue. I just bought a new battery and it hasn't happened since. Thanks for the suggestion.

Battery Drain*Somthing new*

Iv recently noticed while i was using my raph100 with android on it everytime i press one of the hard keys on the front of the phone excluding the top button, the qwerty keyboard would light up while the phone is closed. and i would have to not touch the phone for 10-20 seconds and wait for it to turn off or slide nd close the phone to turn the lights off. not sure if this is a known issue or not but it really does kill the battery and may be the cause for peoples phones getting warm?

Oh yeah! It does the same on mine too... I don't know if it's been noticed before. It only requires a light touch for the capacitive buttons to set the keyboard LEDs off.
interesting, i don't get the same results on my raph800. i can play with the capacitive buttons all day without the kb light coming on.

as far as i can tell. open or closed.
actually i don't get lights coming on on the kb until i actually hit a key on the kb.
must be a raph100 thing then? well it surely has a massive impact on the battery so i hope one of the developers notice this issue and try fix it.
Same here! Raphael100 and keyboardlight is always on when using the phone (even if slider is closed).
A fix would be very much appreciated!

Honestly the keyboard being lit is probably the LEAST concern for draining the battery. Things like processes not letting the system sleep, and overall poor/mishandled power management within the OS are going to cause A LOT more drain than a light on in the keyboard...
Hey, my new phone boots Android but they keyboard light doesn't work at all. Definitely doesn't have much to do with battery life.
well since ur lights dont work how do u know if its affecting ur battery? i sure know it affects mine. cause i get more battery life when i actualy make sure the lights are off
I agree with argh in saying the led for the kb uses very little battery. The raph100 is getting better battery currently with the kb light on than our raph800 with the light off.
Once power management and the system is working better you'll see better battery life, if it ever happens.

[Q] Opening Keyboard Powers Tilt 2 Off?!

In the last couple of days I've noticed that when I slide out my keyboard to do some typing (mainly noticed in emailing), my phone just goes dead and I have to restart it. Anyone had this issue or know how to resolve it other than sending the phone in? Thanks in advance!
I have the same problem, usually when opening up the keyboard to send a SMS.
Try to make a backup and HARD reset phone. See what's in result.
After negative result u can try to flash another firmware OR disassemble touch pro 2 and clean parts. But do it on your own risk
I had this issue when I updated to the higher output battery. It appears that when opening the keyboard the movement can occasionally jar the battery in the compartment(at least it did on my tp2) which then disconnect the battery contacts and the phone shuts off. It was even more apparent when I went the the 3500mah battery from HTC and the new cover. I resolved it by placing velcro on the inside of the cover which effectively pressed against the cover and battery itself to hold it from moving. So far it has worked very well and its been a year.
I have that problem because the power button is in the worst location ever

No, it was powering off completely. Seems like in the past couple of days things have been okay, maybe it's an issue with the battery like others have had and I need to wedge something between the battery and the outer cover.
I had same problem with my wife's TP2. Problem occured after removing SIMLOCK (French Orange). Flashing fresh ROM helped in my case, If you don't want to flash new ROM try HardReset

Screen weird after dropping my phone

I dropped my GN and now the screen is weird.
Phone boots fine and screen looks fine until a few seconds *after* the desktop completely appears. Then it turns really, really dim with a purple tinge. Brightness and color are fine until after it completely boots up.
I tried a battery pull. Same thing happens. Something broke?
You dropped it.
The screen isn't working correctly any more.
Yes I would say something broke.

if there are no obvious signs of dropping the phone (cracks or dents around the housing) you could try sending it back to samsung for replacement, and just say that you woke up one day and its fooked lol

I have insurance on it. Doesn't that cover drops? Do you know how long I will be without a phone if I bring it into a VZW store? Thanks
Well you did ask if something broke, don't be an arse when someone replies with an answer.
Anyways, just sell it and get a new one, the screen on the GNex is ridiculously expensive. Literally worth half the phone. https://www.wholesalegadgetparts.com/product.php?productid=18791&cat=1026&page=1

Depends what the insurance says it covers, some are just extended warranties on the tech, they don't cover accidental damage. And idk how Verizon does it, but my gf went into Sprint, told them the camera stopped working (it did, as a result of water damage ) and they gave her a new one on the spot.

theking, I'll be more literal next time.
I'll go over to Verizon and see what my options are under the Asurion warranty. I'm tempted to buy a new one if I can get it for $199, then sell the broken one for what I can get. I want to exhaust my options here before bringing in the phone because wiping the phone, restoring to stock, and then possibly being without one for a few days is a pain.
Thanks for the comments on the warranty. I'll just drop in. Problem is that the phone is rooted and ROMed so I have to finesse that issue.
Oddly enough, I have this same exact problem. I didn't drop mine, however. I rebooted the phone and it just started doing this. The backlight seems to work fine in recovery, during the boot animation, and the initial screen after boot. After about 5 seconds it then goes to this very dim screen. I can't help but think that if it "broke" somehow that the backlight wouldn't come on at all.

I'm guessing a sensor or regulator got whacked in the drop. I don't seem to be able to find any references via Google to others with our situation.

depends on the coverage you got if insurance will replace it and there will be a deductible.
you wont get another for $199 unless you have an upgrade on a line that you are willing to burn to get it.

Not yet. I'm restoring to a previous backup to see if I still have the problem or not.
EDIT: Restoring back to a previous nandroid backup resolved the issue. The backlight no longer goes dim. It had to have been something in the software somewhere freaking out.
Hang on.... Are you guys running Franco Kernel? His latest app update screws up the colour control and causes all multipliers to stick on 418 or something similar if you don't adjust them before a reboot (after app update). Try checking the colour multipliers before nandroid or sending off Samsung!
Regards.
Interesting. I'm not running Franco, but I do have the Kernel Update App of his (running Imoseyon Lean Kernel). Luckily, I did a nandroid backup before I restored back to the previous nandroid.

Phone shutting down

Where to begin....so I've had my S3 for almost 2 years now and it has run smooth since I bought it. However, about a month ago, my phone just shut off and did not want to turn back on. I tried taking out the battery, putting it back in, using a different battery, connecting it to a charger, but still, nothing. When I would try turning it on, the SAMSUNG logo would flash, the splash screen would play, but then it would just shut off before fully booting up. I tried going into recovery, and I would be in recovery for about 10 seconds before it would shut off. I just tried turning it on for the next hour, and eventually, it turned back on, and stayed on. I thought it was a ROM problem (Was running MOAR v.8) so then I flashed PacMan ROM and my phone was fine. I would reboot to recovery and everything ran great. But....the same problem occured again about two weeks ago. I did the same things as the first time, and it eventually turned back on after about an hour and a half. I change ROMs again and now I'm on SlimKat and things were smooth.....but...once again.....it shut off yesterday. I tried the same things as the previous times, but it would not turn on. My phone would reach the endin of the SlimKat splash screen, but shut off. It has been almost 24 hours since this happened and it still doesnt turn on. Now I am getting worried because it has never stayed off for this long.
Something that may have caused this is my headphone jack replacement. I replaced the headphone jack module myself about 3 months ago, but It was a simple replacement, so I don't think this could be the culprit. I am just lost now and don't know what my problem could be. I have no insurance on my phone, and I am waiting until the LG G3 is released for sprint so that I can upgrade, so I really need this phone to work for another month.
Does anyone know what my problem can be? Any ideas?
Edit: My phone was on the SlimKat splash screen for about two minutes before shutting down. Felt like adding this, maybe it'll help.
Could this be a soft brick?
I really doubt it's a brick of any kind. More than likely your power button is going out. It's very common. You might get away with just taking the phone apart and really cleaning around both the button that you push on from the outside and the actual switch on the inside.
Mind you, this is what I've read and some people have fixed it doing this, but I haven't had this problem...knock on wood.

The power button is probably going out. My S3 which I had for about a year and a half just completely stopped turning on and would only make it as far as the initial Samsung screen when you first press the power button before it would turn off. This problem can't be fixed due to the actual pad is a part of the motherboard. Since Sprint couldn't tell that my phone was rooted because they couldn't turn it on either, the only thing I could do was trade it in for another S3.
Also, when you put the battery in the phone, does it automatically turn itself on without pressing the power button? If so, this is definitely your problem

There's a myth that the term "reboot" came from the Apple III (yes they had an Apple 3, totally different animal from the II-line). Word was that it would overheat and the chips would actually pop out of their sockets, and that it became common practice to lift the Apple III a few inches above the desk and drop it to reseat them.
Again, take it for what it is, a humorous story, probably not the truth.

Old, old computer term for pulling it up by the boot straps.
As far as thumping the back of a TV... I have a buddy that was doing that with his HDTV a couple months ago. I took the back of the TV off and it turned out to be a loose cable running from the motherboard to the back of the screen...
The moral of the story is old tech solutions can still work!

Well you're lucky. I've tried everything in my trick book with no luck when it happened to me. I tried tapping the side of the phone and picking at the button to see if that would fix it and even went to the extent of taking the phone apart with no luck.
Ive had a similar issue but my phone will have more than %20 battery and just shut off. Sometimes it has as much as %67 left. Then it won't go past the splash screen till i plug it in. When it does turn back on sometimes it has the same amount of battery and sometimes it says that it has 0. Is there any way i can check if this is my battery just being dead or perhaps it needs to recalibrate or something.

[Q] Power Issue on Note 3

I was looking and looking for a thread with a similar issue before posting but I had no luck.
My issue is that when I turn off my Note 3 I have a really hard time getting it to boot back up. This happens every time every single time I shut it off. I hold the power button for about a minute with the battery removed to supposedly drain any power as I've read around but that doesn't help. I'm pretty tech savvy and internally the phone looks perfectly fine. The weird thing is that I don't actually have any issues once the phone is up and running to make me think it's a hardware issue. It charges fine, I get data, S pen is fine, no other issues what so ever. I haven't been able to pin point what I'm doing to bring it back but eventually it does end up booting like normal. I try to pull the battery multiple times with no success. I eventually get frustrated and just leave it alone with the battery removed. When I return it boots up just fine.
Anybody else having this issue or heard of it?
Forgot to mention that the phone is stock. I don't have it rooted or a custom rom installed.

Why turn it off?
Just let it sleep. I can't remember when I ever turned my phone off.

I noticed you also have a thread which states the same thing and I'm not sure if you figured it out yet, but just out of curiosity did you happen to ground yourself while you were working on your Note 3? This goes for any device in general but it's pretty amazing how much damage the static electricity from just your clothes can cause if you're not grounded while working with an exposed main board. If you weren't grounded while working on it though it also doesn't mean that something automatically happened, I'm just saying it's always a possibility at least. One thing I would try if you're having problems powering it up even just in general, is to make sure it's plugged in and charging first and then hold the volume up and power buttons down together at the same time (and keep them held down) until you feel a vibration and then let go. It will take at least 10 - 15 full seconds (and sometimes even longer) to happen, but that should usually get it to power it up whenever it's being stubborn. Another thing I'd definitely check, especially if it was working fine before disassembling the phone, is the alignment of the power button itself (the button you press with your finger) and the actual power button which is located behind it on a data ribbon that connects to the main board. It's actually kind of a flimsy setup so whenever you reinstall the back frame plate you have to make sure the power button data ribbon doesn't shift, or it can cause all kinds of weird problems when trying to power on or off the phone. Anyway good luck and hopefully this helps [emoji106] [emoji106]

I just mentioned this in my response to someone else in this thread, but it actually sounds like yours has the same kind of alignment issue with power button that I was talking about. I'm not sure if you've ever disassembled yours for any reason or not, but even if you haven't it's still totally possible that it could've happened from the factory and especially if you got a refurbished phone for whatever reason. It's a pretty poor design choice in my opinion because it's such a "fragile" setup, and even the slightest misalignment of the power button itself and the button on the data ribbon can cause the exact same problems your having. Anyway if if you haven't messed with it and it's still under warranty I'd say just get a new one, but if you have taken it apart I'd say first thing to check would be the alignment of those buttons (once you take the back off). I've even had to make a tiny little "shim" and wedge it behind the power button on the data ribbon in order to get it to line up right with the button itself a couple of times, so I'd say it's a fairly common problem with these phones. Anyway good luck and hope it helps! [emoji106] [emoji106]
